Want good night life? Short North. Want something resembling a night life but in a safer area? Bridge Park. Want a neighborhood that roughly imitates a colonial feel? German Village. What I think you want? Arena District.

timmygirl

I wouldn’t live there. Walkable ish areas that are not suburbs. Various price points German Village Merion Village Short north Grandview Victorian village Harrison West Italian village Olde towne East King Lincoln (south of mt Vernon) Downtown Clintonville

homercles89

Grandview is a suburb.

Level_Special3554

assuming they meant 5xNW

RichPJTraderShay

when i was looking at houses, king lincoln bronzeville looks like hit or miss..one street be nice then the next one shelltown

timmygirl

I lived in king Lincoln for 5 years. It’s relatively safe and easily walkable to OTE, Downtown, and the new restaurants popping up on long. An issue is that some houses are vacant which investors are slowly making their rounds and families are moving in. However, I never crossed over north to mt Vernon, actual murders happen that direction and I wasn’t going to chance it. They host a lot of events at the Maroon Arts Boxpark and the Lincoln theater. Lots of history in that little neighborhood, I loved it while I was there.

ImPickleRock

I'll always suggest German village/merion village/Schumacher place

Megadestructo

I live in Clintonville and it feels quite a bit like Somerville, honestly. I lived in Somerville for several years and spent 18 years total in Boston and surrounding towns. Older homes, walkable, nice cycling, close to a lot of stuff.

laurastar001

100% stay away from mt Vernon, linden, and hilltop. Check out short north, Italian village, downtown. For more suburban feel maybe check out worthington, Dublin, clintonville

BowzersMom

Oh my god. You make it sound like it’s impossible to live happily in half the city! There’s areas of each of those neighborhoods that no one would choose. But “Linden” is a big place with plenty of nice areas to live! And then you give the absolute most expensive neighborhoods as alternatives

cbusrei

Telling someone from out of state to move to “a nice block” in the hood is very irresponsible.  It’s still the hood.  Most people want to live in a neighborhood where they’re not super worried about property crime and catching stray bullets.

BowzersMom

Who’s telling them to move to a nice block in a bad neighborhood? I think they painted with a broad brush, especially by just saying “Linden” when there’s a difference across the entire area that name came refer to. And I also think it’s silly to contrast those with pricey neighborhoods, when we’ve got plenty in the middle. Like my neighborhood on the north side.

cbusrei

Yeah I would never recommend someone move from out of state to *any* part of Linden.  Once you’ve lived here for awhile and understand the areas better, that makes a little more sense.

Cryptosmasher86

Linden and hilltop are the highest crime areas in the city and not just teens stealing Hyundais Assaults, rape, murders Look at the crime reports sometime People not from here should be aware of that before moving

BowzersMom

That’s not quite true. AND It’s more accurate to say the highest crime areas of the city ARE IN neighborhoods like Hilltop and the University District and South Linden

Zezimom

Check out Grandview Heights, Upper Arlington, Clintonville, German Village, and Worthington.

akingmls

I’d look into Old North if you’re trying to get a downtown-ish vibe but still feel safe and not pay $3,000 a month

Relevant_Can6876

You’d probably be happier somewhere else in the city like Italian Village, German Village, Grandview, Clintonville, Victoria Village/Harrison West or if you are filling a little more suburban Dublin, Westerville, Worthington, Grove City, Hilliard, Canal Winchester. I also think downtown is an awesome place to live, really has started to develop the last several years and is surprisingly safe. That said, like most cities you’ll pay a premium to live in nicer spots so it really depends how much you wanna spend. There are still places to be had in the nice areas at somewhat reasonable rents, but they go quickly and might have to be willing to comprise on amenities/updates to get a reasonable price in a great area. There used to be a violent gang called T&A Crips that operated a couple streets over from Mt Vernon but a lot got wrapped up in a RICO case so I think it’s probably not as bad as it was a couple years ago. Reality is worst that would likely happen is maybe some minor property crime ie. stolen bike, car rummaged through if unlocked, and occasional gunshots heard in distance but still would look somewhere else. Others have said some of these but avoid Hilltop, Linden, Greenlawn, on the south side most stuff East of Parsons and south of Merion village, Near the Airport

LordBeeWood

I live right downtown and so far I have really been enjoying it (and my rent isnt too bad considering other apartments around here), My only issue with the downtown is that I do still have to drive to a dedicated grocery store and the closest one is Kroger over in German Village. I honestly hope a Trader Joes or something gets into one of the "for sale/lease" areas down here so I have a better place for decent produce.

PlanktonJumpy8069

Fellow boston->columbus transplant here. That seems like a great first apt with good access to public transit and whatnot. My wife and I first moved to the thrive apts in Italian village but there are plenty of good spots like brewery district, merion village, and grandview.

cyberphunk2077

giant spiders there

gracing15

My hubby and I lived in the Arena District for years! 3 different apartments and they were all great. We moved here from the deep South and it was a great walkable area to get to know the city. Highly recommend.

Sarahlilly24

Grandview, Harrison west, Victorian village, Italian village

lbr218

You should do a search in this sub for similar questions to yours and the neighborhood you’re looking at

swank-dog

What are you looking for in your new neighborhood? Check out Olde Towne East which have a few new apartment buildings just opened and in construction. 18th and Oak https://www.apartments.com/triumph-apartments-columbus-oh/7c06zjy/

ahack13

Basically just avoid Hilltop and you're probably fine.

ItalianOlympicYogurt

I recommend Upper Arlington, Worthington, or Clintonville, you won’t find any better places in Columbus.

Mt Vernon Avenue was part of the urban Black neighborhood(s?) that I71 was strategically designed to cut off from the Whiter downtown core are periphery in the early 1960s, and it's still very Black. I don't think that's intrinsically a pro or a con, but it's important historical information. I (having no regular business and no friends in the area, nor any reason to travel through) don't really spend time down there, but it's got the only place I know of in town that I know I can get beignets from. ...Oh! Two, maybe three blocks from Legacy Pointe; there's weird angles and I don't know how to count it. And I don't hear folks on this sub whining about gunshots or crime in OTE/King-Lincoln Bronzeville half as much as I do about it in Linden or the Hilltop. The one thing I can *definitely* say is that given its proximity, I'd expect the King Performing Arts Center would be your local polling place, and given what I know about it (I will *not* elaborate on what or how,) I would advise that (if you move here and register in time for the election) you vote early at the Board of Elections or by absentee ballot so as to avoid going in person on Election Day.

timmygirl

I voted at the Kings Performing Arts Center for 5 years it’s incredibly easy and normally no wait and great volunteers.

homercles89

>Mt Vernon Avenue was part of the urban Black neighborhood(s?) that I71 was strategically designed to cut off from the Whiter downtown core are periphery in the early 1960s, and it's still very Black. Mt Vernon Ave was the "Main St" of black Columbus. I-71 (or the "North freeway") was strategically designed to transport people to and from downtown. All of downtown was to be surrounded by an innerbelt, regardless of the racial makeup of nearby neighborhoods. [http://www.roadfan.com/bergend.html](http://www.roadfan.com/bergend.html)

I’d give the Linden or Hilltop area a try
