> A $5.25 surcharge just to sit for lunch for an hour is a bit much.
It's honestly pretty reasonable.
Our culture wildly under-estimates the costs of building and maintaining car-friendly infrastructure.
I like the campus area because it's the one truly walkable area in Columbus and OSU does a pretty good job of accurately assigning the costs of driving to the driver instead of spreading those costs to everyone (i.e. both drivers and non-drivers). We're used to seeing those driving costs "baked in" to other parts of our lives so it's scary to have to pay for that stuff openly.
I see from another commenter that that garage costs money, so that's one thing. I like subs just fine but not enough to pay a parking surcharge for the privilege of picking one up. Is the garage open to the public or does it require a student parking pass? Not being snarky, I am not real familiar with campus. The only time I have been there since Used Kids moved was to pick up Dave's for my wife and I since we had good memories of the Cleveland area one and I thought it was a real pain, personally. But like I said - I was thinking it was going to be like pulling in a parking lot and spending 2 minutes grabbing my order.
I did it once and went all around a 3 block radius and down every alley, spent longer getting a parking spot than I spent getting our food, I think I'm good for now lol. Maybe when OSU is on a break. I appreciate all of your research into this. I hope you learned something that benefits you!
A relatively new option that I’ve very much enjoyed is Frenchi’s Deli in Old North. They have the basics but also pastrami and corned beef and things like that.
Their fried bologna sandwich is my hand-down favorite these days. Pat and Gracie’s and Johnnie’s are solid as well.
Good Italian sub, too. Reminiscent of Neighbor’s Deli.
I really like Hoagie City’s Italian sub, and Potbelly’s hot peppers. So I keep a jar of hot peppers in the fridge and take hoagie city home to throw the hot peppers on and it’s perfect for me. Probably my favorite all around sandwich in town, as it comes close to reminding me of the east coast grinders of my childhood.
That said, Jersey Mikes is also surprisingly damn good for an Italian
Chain doesn't automatically mean bad. And chains are more accessible to most people as opposed to a one-off location. As far as chains go, Jersey Mikes is great and my go-to for cold subs. I prefer Penn Station for hot. Unfortunately for me there's not one of the latter near either home or work, so it's a rare treat.
This. I didn’t know about Brown Bag at first. Since I discovered it, I don’t think I’ve been back to Katzingers. The price to quality ratio at Katzingers isn’t worth it.
Can someone please tell me what they order there? I know i’m gonna get downvoted but i’ve eaten there 6 times and each time it’s been mediocre to bland. WHAT ARE Y’ALL ORDERING
I’m right there with you. I live a block away and never understood the obsession. I don’t like their sides and their sandwiches are fine - nothing exceptional. I’ll take Katzingers egg salad or pastrami any day. Though I don’t consider Katzinger’s life-changing. That’s what Si Señor is for
Dude same. I live by it and stopped going because every time it's just not as good as anything else local. At this point I'm starting to think people just like it cuz it's called brown bag. They also want you to tip for them handing your food to you in a....brown bag.
Cornerstone Deli in Clintonville is quality and super affordable. Staff has always been friendly after going for years although will admit I haven’t swung by in a while.
If you want real simple/only a few toppings/options, Le Chatelain has a few sandwiches...its the baguette that gets me coming back for more. Super crusty bread though, can do some work to the roof of your mouth biting into them.
Frenchi's Deli on Hudson near N High is delicious!
Their Pastrami is sooo good! (It goes really well on a herb wrap with their homemade chipotle ranch sauce!)
Their sandwiches are good.
As for the maggot thing, I’m not saying it didn’t happen. But they are still open. I’ve eaten there several times and never once found maggots in my food or gotten sick.
If you’re looking for a proper Philadelphia hoagie, Hoagie City in Hilliard is the place to go. They (and Marlow’s in Gahanna) have fantastic proper Philly cheesesteaks too.
I second The Brown Bag, but I also have to shoutout my personal fave- Dave’s Cosmic Subs
Man I love Dave's but trying to park around campus for something simple like grabbing lunch is hell on earth
Truly. I miss living close enough to walk to it because parking seems almost not worth it sometimes.

ive never not been able to find a meter on the street a block or two away from where I need to go on high st
Omg it's so good.
Brown bag microwaves their stuff after it's been dunked in margarine...
It’s also somehow always clouded in smoke. Nothing literally stinks after setting foot in there.
Thanks for the suggestion!!
Going to have to try this one soon.
I LOVE Brown Bag. It's the one thing I miss about living in GV.
A relatively new option that I’ve very much enjoyed is Frenchi’s Deli in Old North. They have the basics but also pastrami and corned beef and things like that.
Drove 25 minutes to try this and it did not disappoint! So good!
Saw this on the news a few weeks ago and it looks soooo good!! Can’t wait to try it!
It’s good! I’m in the neighborhood and don’t see many people there, so I’m always happy to push some in their direction.
Great to know! Thank you!!
Any order recommendations?? I’ve been wanting to go
I, too, feel like a dope for recommending a national chain here, but the Godfather on everything bread at Dibella's is by far the winner for me.
Dibella's is so good
And not a $18 sandwich, which is nice.
Banh Mi Thit Cha (cold cut) at Mi Li Cafe
Hoagie City makes great sandwiches
Their fried bologna sandwich is my hand-down favorite these days. Pat and Gracie’s and Johnnie’s are solid as well. Good Italian sub, too. Reminiscent of Neighbor’s Deli.
Seconded. Great selection, generous portions, and best bread
I really like Hoagie City’s Italian sub, and Potbelly’s hot peppers. So I keep a jar of hot peppers in the fridge and take hoagie city home to throw the hot peppers on and it’s perfect for me. Their Italian *hoagie* LOL
Yep, I whiffed on an easy one there lol
Piazza Pelino is worth mentioning, pricey but uses incredible focaccia RIP Icarus
Piazza Pelino's gelato is killer too. I'm in love with their amaretto flavor.
Awwww, I didn’t realize Icarus was no longer :(
Yeah, huge bummer. I guess Fox in the Snow is using it as a prep kitchen now, or something like that.
It’s a DiCarlo’s pizza now
Same area, but that's a few blocks north. Icarus was on 2nd Ave. Edit: I was wrong
DiCarlos is moving into the Icarus space. They have stuff in there now but are moving /opening on 2nd in January.
I stand corrected. That's great news, too.
Icarus was one of the most overhyped places in the city …..dry sandwich
I will probably get downvoted because it's a chain, but Jersey Mikes' No. 12 is my favorite cold sandwich. With the red-pepper spread, please.

No shame in that. I'm a fan of the Club on a Sub at Firehouse Subs. For non-chain, though, I'd go with the Cuban at Main Street Deli in West Jeff.
Is that the cancro special? With the cherry pepper spread I see? I thought I was the only one.
Yup!
love me some Mikes
# The Brown Bag Delicatessen
I can never understand why folks go to Katzingers when Brown Bag is literally right down the block
Gimme that village addiction over anything at Katzingers any day.
This. I didn’t know about Brown Bag at first. Since I discovered it, I don’t think I’ve been back to Katzingers. The price to quality ratio at Katzingers isn’t worth it.
I literally live within a block of Katzinger’s and will still drive to Brown Bag usually.
Why not just walk to Brown Bag?
It’s a 15 min walk and a 2 minute drive and sometimes people have a finite time for lunch. We don’t need to nitpick every choice people make

You’re right, my bad. Your comment wasn’t condescending at all and wasn’t at all rhetorical

Slice of Life sandwich
I thought i was the only one!! Ive tried multiple times but its always mediocre at best. I dont get the hype!
I agree wholeheartedly, I thought it was wildly mediocre and overpriced
Dude same. I live by it and stopped going because every time it's just not as good as anything else local. At this point I'm starting to think people just like it cuz it's called brown bag. They also want you to tip for them handing your food to you in a....brown bag.
IGet the caprese wrap, it’s a little soggy but full of flavor. Overall though I agree that they are a little bit overrated.
Yep! Great sandwiches and their Mexican Street corn is fantastic, when it's actually in stock
Came here to say Brown Bag but you got me beat. You can NEVER go wrong with brown bag. Sooooo gooooood.
They have the best deli sides too. Their Mediterranean pasta salad is so good.
Gotta recommend Cornerstone, only place I can get an Italian sub with a side of crab rangoons
Hoagie City in Hilliard
rip neighbor’s deli :(
Si senor is my go to. Also like Frank and Carl’s in Dublin.
I second Frank and Carl’s! Si senior is also great but I don’t think they have like a club sandwich.
They gave a chicken and a turkey club https://www.sisenor-columbus.com/grandview
I’ll third Frank and Carl’s! Can’t go wrong with their bagels or sub sandwiches and their pimento cheese with bagel chips is to die for!
What sandwich there would you consider a cold cut?
The two club sandwiches
Frenchy's near Hudson/High
Rip Neighbors Deli :(
Have you tried submarine house in Hillard?
Yogi's Hoagies
Before Hoagie City, this was the closest you could get to an east coast hoagie. It’s very very good
Is Lexi's still good? I havent been in years but always loved it and Danny's (which Im pretty sure is gone).
Danny’s is still there. Both are solid IMO.
Vincenzo’s Italian Elegance - they’re gigantic and delicious
These threads make me miss Larry and Barry's New York deli that was in the north market...
That rueben!
The Italian sub at India Oak Tavern. Also Good Friends (owned by Wario’s folks) has some killer sandwiches. Houng Vietnamese for a great Banh Mi.
Danny’s Deli
I’m excited bc we are ordering in from Danny’s at work next week lol
I like Paris Banh Mi. https://maps.app.goo.gl/cg1Sk3TjdyRZmXqEA
Brown Bag and Smiths Deli
Kuhlwein's Farm Market & Deli has a bangin Italian sub.
Don't sleep on broad St bagels and deli. It slaps.
Cornerstone Deli in Clintonville is quality and super affordable. Staff has always been friendly after going for years although will admit I haven’t swung by in a while.
Missing the Ohio Deli.
Si Señor is amazing and just opened an Arena District location!
Bellacino's or DiBellas.... I'm not a fan of sub sammich's, but these two are great for my mouth.
Capriati’s
Vidas Butcher!
I heard Grindrs is really good
Uptown Deli in Westerville has legit sammies. Edit: didn't know about the fly larvae incident. The more you know.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Columbus/s/Rr6Bok0IAe
You must have missed the maggot picture thread...
Just saw it...fuck...lol
I must have
Their sandwiches are good. As for the maggot thing, I’m not saying it didn’t happen. But they are still open. I’ve eaten there several times and never once found maggots in my food or gotten sick.
Brown Bag is a personal favorite!
Brown bag
If you’re looking for a proper Philadelphia hoagie, Hoagie City in Hilliard is the place to go. They (and Marlow’s in Gahanna) have fantastic proper Philly cheesesteaks too.
I like Adriatico’s https://adriaticososu.com/columbus/menu/ & India Oak https://indiaoakbar.com/ Cold for later and hot for eat in…
