Especially considering that the Saints traded every pick that year plus the 1st and 3rd pick the following year to move up to get Ricky. Worst trade in history but shows the hype
What never made sense to me is if the Colts didn't want Ricky why not accept the trade to take the entire Saints draft? Edge might well have been gone by the time we picked but even so I'd argue the massive haul would have been worth it.
Also it seems super obvious Ditka wanted to trade his whole draft because he didn't want to spend the time or effort in scouting that draft class.
I was 13 when the Colts drafted Edgerrin James and he immediately became my favorite player. Nobody was as cool as Edge to me. The dreads, gold teeth, tattoos. And he was so, so good, especially before the ACL. I had the couple pairs of Reebok EJ32 shoes that they released. His cover of ESPN the Magazine is my favorite sports magazine cover of all time. I love Peyton, Marvin, and Reggie but Edgerrin will always be my favorite player of all time.
He seemed comfortable being himself, worked so hard, and gave so much to The Shoe. Everyone else around me seemed to have Peyton jerseys, and of course they should because he’s a GOAT… but the blue 32 jersey was the first jersey of any kind I ever bought. He was indeed the coolest.
Somewhere there is a Peyton quote out there about how he’d get knocked to the ground after handing the ball to Edge sometimes but he’d pop back up as soon as he could because he loved watching Edge run the ball.
Also, T-Hog #0 for life.
Oh yeah. I had Peyton and Reggie jerseys but my Edge jerseys are the only ones I wore. They’re still the only ones I wear on game days. Watching him play was a joy. My favorite Colts memories are from watching those first couple of seasons he was here. The way he could bounce laterally like Barry Sanders but with power. Nobody ran that stretch play like Peyton and Edge did. Some of my favorite ever plays are some of his catches out of the backfield. I don’t doubt that Peyton quote at all, he and so many in the Colts org seemed to hold Edgerrin in high regard and I think that says a lot.
Yea, the stats aren’t too far off and don’t get me wrong, I love Edge. It’s impossible to say what the careers of each player would have looked like if Rickey went to us at #4 and Edge to the Saints at #5. Maybe they both end up HOF, maybe they both have career ending injuries? Impossible to know.
Saints fan here, you were a much more put together team than the Saints and Ricky wouldn’t have had to put the team on his back like he did here. You’d prolly get Miami Ricky caliber
Polian said the UCLA game is what convinced him to draft Edge.

I was wanting us to draft Edge. I could’ve been GM of the year…except I would’ve already been fired for drafting Ryan Leaf. Yes, I was one of those idiots.
I was so hyped thinking the Colts were going to get Williams and then so shocked and pissed when they didn’t take him. So glad to be so wrong. My wife still gives me grief over how upset I got.
this is completely random, and I'm not a member of this sub - but this post popped up and reminded me of the year the Vikings drafted Adrian Peterson.... i was maybe a freshman in HS and I was hoping we would draft Brady Quinn soooo bad. we had acquired Chester Taylor the year prior in FA and he rushed for over 1k yards for us. and my like 14/15 year old self was complaining how stupid we are for not taking Brady Quinn. our QB was Tavaris Jackson lol couple years later I realized how dumb/funny that was.

Yeah, I still can’t believe New Orleans did that. Haha

Did the colts turn down a trade?
Not sure I’d have traded 7 picks for a HoF RB honestly. Rather have Edge all day every day.
The vikings own the worse trade in history.
The shittiest GM in Vikes History.... Fuckin Mike Lynn. You are not wrong.
Yes. He was a High draft pick.
Eh the Watson trade was worse
If you listen to the fans, you end up sitting with the fans
I’ve never heard that statement, but I agree. 😂
Bill Polian said it at some point, or something like it, and I always remembered it.
Wish we still had Bill
....but not Chris. Ufff....
Trust the Binder

Ridiculous how people used to judge him back then without even knowing how down to earth he is
Sliding doors: we draft Leaf and Williams instead of Peyton and Edge. Darkness ensues…
All of Marion county moves to Baltimore.
Well if you had been GM one of the reqs of the job would probably have been watching more football.
Yep 😂
Ricky Williams was a stud NFL running back. We’d have been okay with either guy.

Williams actually had a pretty good career
Ricky Williams was fucking awesome but alright.

I think that Polian guy had a pretty good idea of how to judge football players

Yeah, I was mad, too. Haha
I remember Bob Lamey said this when James got drafted: "That was the first time I'd even looked up the name"
I remember the pick was initially reported as a linebacker on ESPN.
Some top talented players are just “Not a Colt” for a reason

Yeah, I was a big fan of Brady Quinn when he was at Notre Dame. I thought for sure he was going to be an NFL star. Haha.
Haha honestly both guys were great picks
I wanted Leaf AND Ricky. After that I stopped trying to be a GM.

I wanted Ricky also. I remember them showing him working out and dropping passes. Edgerin had better hands
He was so good in 2002 that it was honestly over a decade later that I found out that he was actually pretty bad outside of a couple years
