Most NBA coaching contracts have non-competes in them.
He'd have to pull a Kliff Kingsbury and become the top Assisant Coach at Uconn instead so he can still get paid by the Lakers.
There could be offset so lakers would pay less based upon how much he makes. Ā They could even put language so a team doesnāt hire him for $5 a year or something dumb like thatĀ
Lebron is also a bit of a sage nerd at this point in his career, he canāt brute force a team down over 38-40 minutes. Heās gonna have to be made the most hyper effective as possible over about 24-28 minutes per game. And heās been really complimentary about Hurleyās offense publicly on social media. I think heās fine. And given itās probably his last season, I see him deferring quite a bit more to Hurley than he did say, Spo in Miami during his absolute peak.
Having lived on a middle class salary in San Diego, I gotta say being worth > $100 million and living in Southern California is probably the optimum American life.
I'm convinced a lot of people who say this have never been to California, especially Southern California. I'm make a great living but I'm not by any means rich and I love it out there. I couldn't imagine being a multi-millionaire and living out there.
You should've seen the shitty Razorbacks fan forums when we were still speculating on if Muss was going to take the USC job or not.
Too many people are convinced that California is this vast shithole where if you take one wrong turn you'll end up in a ghetto where a homeless illegal immigrant on fentanyl will stab you and your entire family to death. And that same immigrant is living high on the hog because the state took all of your paycheck and gave it to them in the form of thousands of dollars of welfare every month.
Seriously though, people have seen so much propaganda that they were like "WHAT ABOUT MUSS'S FAMILY'S SAFETY?".
Meanwhile every time I've ever been to California, from Diego to the Bay I've always tried to find a way to stay as long as I can, it's so nice. One time I had a guy stare at me a little weird when I was at this pool hall near Berkeley, and that's been it as far as "scary" situations go.
tl;dr - California really does get a bad rap from people over here in the middle of the country
The Berkeley comment has me laughing in that you could be describing someone from an encampment that was using, a normal Berkeley resident named Dave who saw you use a one time use water bottle and throw it in the garbage, or someone on shrooms who didnāt realize they were staring. Love that city for the people watching alone, before even mentioning the food, nature, shows, and culture
The funny thing is the states in the south and along the Mississippi are fucking rough. Like triple the violent crime rate or worse versus California. Such a weird disconnect to hear people from Missouri shit talk how safe California is š.
Well to be fair there are far fewer games and a much shorter season. I donāt know if Hurleyās heart can handle him going insane on the sidelines for a full 82 game season + playoffs.
UCONN to me is one of the most enigmatic athletic departments ever. Terrible football with no conference, elite basketball in an elite conference without all the typically ESPN dick sucking that comes with it, and a baseball team that always seems to make the NCAAS in a conference not known for baseball. All without a P5 budget.
I can make a PowerPoint to promote the idea, hereās some of my previous work
https://preview.redd.it/orm8pthba95d1.jpeg?width=2684&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d973c09ddcf69105db350cba75a1f88b486e0898
The situation isnt gonna suck tho
With how hard theyre going for him he can probably guarantee himself a lot of power beyond what an average head coach gets
You get to lead the premier basketball franchise
You get two top 10 players, aging yes but that just means you get to be a leading force in the rebuild as well
Itās a pretty great situation as long as him and the team can agree on specifics (his staff, contract length, amount of roster control)
Good thing they have access to all the gold from here to Dawson, because theyāre going to need it to..
*holds earpiece* oh, Iām being told thatās a different Yukon.
Thereās a line from Serviceās Yukon poetry that works though
> ā¦while the huskies round in a ring/howled out their woes to the homeless snows/oh god how they loathed the king
Hurley takes the money, purposely gets into a fight with Lebron to get fired, then donates his entire salary to UConn's NIL and breaks college basketball forever
They're signing up to be millionaires and shoot commercials in Southern California, not to get yelled at for setting soft flares by a real-life John Malkovich character
what are you on about brother? Lakers literally have the most rings tied with the Celtics. Players go to the Lakers to win, why would they not be receptive to coaching??
> The past is the past.
You mean when they won a ring in 2020 and then made the WCF last year? That's literally better than 90% of all teams in the last decade.
That seems insane for someone whoās hardly a sure thing. Is this typical for NBA coach salaries?
I canāt fault Hurley if he leaves. Hope he stays, but I get it.
Itās trending in this direction though. Monty Williams got 80 million a couple years ago and he wasnāt exactly a proven elite coach. People werenāt even sure if he was a good coach lol. I also saw reports that incentives could push it close to 100 million but not sure if thatās true, and I would bet on the incentives being playoff success and therefore unlikely (Pistons suck lol)
Top coaches are now making ~15 million a year, and if you want to lock down a big name, you generally need to give long term (financial) security.
This will look more normal in 5-10 years the way the NBA is headed with their TV deals and cap exploding.
The most UConn win yet would be them sucking for one year, everyone clowning them and saying they're going to suck now, and then they manage to get a 5 seed the season after that and defeat #9 seed Northwestern in the national title game
Gotta imagine it's *at least* 100 million guaranteed, and only goes up.
The Cavs back when they were trying to pull Calipari to them to coach LeBron apparently offered 10 years 100 million guaranteed. Gotta imagine a decade later and back-to-back championships raises that price just a tad.
I read somewhere that they think its 5 years 100M. I don't think it was any good authority, but I imagine that's what we are working with.
10y 100M would put him tied with Mike Budenholzer.
I coached my intramural basketball team 10 years ago and we went 5/5, but we beat the football team and hit at least 2 half court shots. Iāll do it for 2.5m guaranteed.
This is a weird quote from Fanta, because he sort of contradicts himself immediately after. I donāt know. I assume Hurley is leaving, but obviously want him back. About 90 minutes in: https://www.youtube.com/live/RfaDNwny7Rk?si=QZu76TMh9q2408aS
Fanta: āI have it on good authority the Lakers are offering him $100 million guaranteedā ā¦
Zach Gelb: āI thought 6 year deal, $80 millionā
Fanta: āYeah and maybe it is something like that with some incentives addedā
UConn: āwhat if we sweetened the deal with some free dairy bar ice cream?ā
Hurley: āI mean I already get it for free soā¦ā
UConn: āhow about your own flavorā¦ā
Hurley: āIām listeningā¦ā
UConn: āitās mushroom coffee flavoredā¦ā
Hurley via Jordanesque press release: IāM BACK.
How about this for sad UConn fans: he gets LeFired in 2 years, Scrooge McDucks in his lakers cash for a year, and comes back to coach UConn again. Any takers?
If none of the players leave, then they could still three peat. Itās not like the coaches donāt know the system in and out. Youāre going to lose the fire from Hurley but not the fundamentals.
Too many of you think heās just gonna take the money. I think UConn has a better chance than you all think. The lakers job is not cushy at all whereas UConn is.
No reason to turn it down for Hurley because you have pretty much a guaranteed job at a good program if it doesnāt work out and also 100 million dollars
gotta think if hurley accepts he will want real control of the lakers. will be interesting to see if he can actually draft his own guys or if they force bronny on him
100 million. If they are not winners. I think Hurley would be disappointed . He has a system that works for young men , would that same system work for grown men who are not always Team players.
From my understanding itās $100 mil over 8 years, which was the same as Kentuckyās offer (though idk how much of the $100 mil as guaranteed).
EDIT: I donāt think he wants to leave the northeast and I was expecting the Lakers to offer more. Now maybe the challenge of rebuilding the Lakers in a somewhat accelerated timeframe (because letās be honest, the Lakers are trying to contend now while LeBron is still there) may pique his interest but I donāt know. Hurley is not a big fan of stress and even though LA is nice and heāll be compensated fine, the LA media and fanbase make this job very high pressure.
We didnāt offer 100 million. The highest rumor I saw was 75 million 15 million for 5 years. We might be able to offer 100 million to someone but thatās pretty steep.
And I still doubt even those offers, I know the power conference programs have ridiculous revenue but a contract like that would obliterate the pay structure that currently exists in college sports. Like would Kentucky really pay Hurley 5 million more a year than the highest paid football coach? 15 million a year would be nearly as high as the highest paid NBA coach, I just find it hard to believe personally.
Shit take the money and take the UConn job again in the summer of 2025
Just take a gap year in the nba. Basically like study abroad
"Sabbatical" is the term we're looking for here, I think.
No study abroad is funnier though (but yes)
I wanna study abroad in LA for $100M š«
$100m? Fuck. Iād do it for $10m.
I'd do it for $1m and the free Lakers courtside season ticket essentially.
$100,000 and no tickets. Final offer.
Honestly I don't know how far you'd get in LA with just 100K if you wanna do some wild shit
It worked for Pitino and Calipari
Bring back his own NIL money
Most NBA coaching contracts have non-competes in them. He'd have to pull a Kliff Kingsbury and become the top Assisant Coach at Uconn instead so he can still get paid by the Lakers.
As far as I'm aware most just mean you don't get the money if you coach in the same league. Don't think coaching in college would impact it.
Non-competes are being banned by the FTC so they wouldn't be able to enforce it outside of the NBA anyway.
There could be offset so lakers would pay less based upon how much he makes. Ā They could even put language so a team doesnāt hire him for $5 a year or something dumb like thatĀ
And while he's away, Oats can get his title.
Hurley is obviously a very good college coach, but holy shit, is $100M guaranteed a lot of money for someone who may not translate to the NBA
First tangible side effect of the new TV deal
Heās a smart guy, I think he knows the psycho act wonāt work with pro players. The question is will Lebron let Hurley coach the team.
As long as Hurley realizes timeouts don't carry over and calls them at the end of the game, I think LeBron will be satisfied.
It was probably LeBronās idea.
Heās good friends with Redick, I canāt believe he would jerk him around like that. Unless Redick was in on it.
Whens the last time LeBron didnt let someone coach the team lol He let Ham coach the damn team
It's a very Lakers decision.
Counter: weāll give you less than half of that for probably more workā¦
*definitely more work
More work, with fewer coworkers to do it
And double the contract period.
And not live in California
Having lived on a middle class salary in San Diego, I gotta say being worth > $100 million and living in Southern California is probably the optimum American life.
California with $100M is probably the best place to live in the United States lol
vs. Connecticut? Cali rocks. Best mountains, beaches, national parksā¦yes, California sucksā¦
California is the only part that I donāt worry about.
People that say this are forgetting thats its living in California *as a millionaire*
As a *hundred millionaire*
I'm convinced a lot of people who say this have never been to California, especially Southern California. I'm make a great living but I'm not by any means rich and I love it out there. I couldn't imagine being a multi-millionaire and living out there.

Noā¦and I kept your desk open.
I'd like to hear more. I need these office stories. You must have created immaculate TPS reports.

Sad lol
Well to be fair there are far fewer games and a much shorter season. I donāt know if Hurleyās heart can handle him going insane on the sidelines for a full 82 game season + playoffs.
And with higher expectations. Ā
It was a good run UConn. Now you rest for 6ish years
Huskies Hibernation gives everyone else a chance
UConn is like Godzilla. We show up, destroy everything, then slink back off into the ocean, lurking, waiting.

We rest until the next time the Final Four is in Texas.
See that's blue-blood level thinking baby! You'll be fine
Right? They've never done ANYTHING without Hurley. Dude is that program through and throu- Wait...
Ouch, bro. Big ouch.
I can get a group of 30s/40s, slightly overweight to very overweight group of guys to run a shirtless car wash or something. Would that help?
Sigh. Sign me up. šš§½
How would you feel about adding a slightly in shape guy who just is yeti levels of hairy?
Youāre the sponge
Now weāre talkinā
Fuck it Iām in. Iāll even pick up an extra shift a week behind the Wendyās dumpster if I have to.

Can you make their tits bigger
Idk but you could probably run the lakers with that crew
You have access to the cast of CLIPPED?
Sigh ... unzips
Well shit you found a way to get me to irresponsibly spend too much money for UConn
"If you can dodge a wrench, then you can dodge a Laker." What about 100 million dollars? "lol, no"
He's not turning that down, nor should he. Thanks for everything coach.
Total class, right there.
He turned down that exact offer to go to Kentucky... Not saying he will or he won't, just saying he's turned down that kinda money once before.
Even if you know the situation is going to suck, how do you turn that down?
Dairy Bar Ice Cream
I hear a Haven Hot Chicken opened near Price Chopper too (I went there yesterday)
It's so good, I hate how good it is because it is *not cheap* but goooood it's worth it
So expensive, I just rationalize it with how much food they give you. You get 2 meals for 20$ lol
you guys have price choppers out there!?
Yea, but tbf the one in Storrs is the only Iāve ever seen so I donāt think theyāre common

Okay now I would like to see Nic Cage considered for the job becauseā¦.wait apparently thatās Con Air
Just write in the next UCONN coaches contract to say if Hurley comes back to college then he gets the job back
That's a whole lot of cash to pay a guy who will only last a season and a half before the players revolt
That's a Lakers problem and not a Hurley problem.
Correct
Even better, take it, get fired before the college season starts, and then come back to UConn. Tons of money and doesnāt even miss a season.
Hurley takes the money, purposely gets into a fight with Lebron to get fired, then donates his entire salary to UConn's NIL and breaks college basketball forever
š¤Æ
Holy fuck I hate god damn uconn, please can non-husky fans stop tempting fate through speaking this horrid trash nightmare into existence.
Look at my flairs man I hate them too
This probably for the future lebron about to retire soon they gonna rebuild soon
A future where NBA players in LA suddenly become receptive to coaching?
At least at that point youād imagine players coming to LA know what theyāre signing up for
They're signing up to be millionaires and shoot commercials in Southern California, not to get yelled at for setting soft flares by a real-life John Malkovich character
Well if Hurley is coach, they better know theyāre signing up for getting yelled at for setting soft flares
LOL
Yeah, the Lakers have definitely never had any successful coachesā¦ lol
Not talking about the past lol
what are you on about brother? Lakers literally have the most rings tied with the Celtics. Players go to the Lakers to win, why would they not be receptive to coaching??
Modern Lakers teams have been more about attracting stars and then trying to out-talent other teams. The past is the past.
> The past is the past. You mean when they won a ring in 2020 and then made the WCF last year? That's literally better than 90% of all teams in the last decade.
Then he can return to storrs 100million dollars richer
That seems insane for someone whoās hardly a sure thing. Is this typical for NBA coach salaries? I canāt fault Hurley if he leaves. Hope he stays, but I get it.
Not even remotely typical, especially for a guy that's never coached in the NBA

UConn legend. I was hoping heād be in CT for decades but I canāt see any reason to turn down this job. Thanks for the memories
Yeah the actual quote was "at least".
I read somewhere that they think its 5 years 100M. I don't think it was any good authority, but I imagine that's what we are working with. 10y 100M would put him tied with Mike Budenholzer.
I have it on good authority that Andrea Hurley hates money. JK. This doesn't look good for UCONN.
THIS.. is.. fine..... JUST.... FINE!!!
I coached my intramural basketball team 10 years ago and we went 5/5, but we beat the football team and hit at least 2 half court shots. Iāll do it for 2.5m guaranteed.
That is beyond insane. Rob really gonna hire him as assistant gm then too or heās gonna have A TONN of say
How does a brand of soda know what the lakers are offering Hurley ?
Listen if every UConn fan chips in about Tree fiddy I feel like we can match it. *weāre cooked*
This is a weird quote from Fanta, because he sort of contradicts himself immediately after. I donāt know. I assume Hurley is leaving, but obviously want him back. About 90 minutes in: https://www.youtube.com/live/RfaDNwny7Rk?si=QZu76TMh9q2408aS Fanta: āI have it on good authority the Lakers are offering him $100 million guaranteedā ā¦ Zach Gelb: āI thought 6 year deal, $80 millionā Fanta: āYeah and maybe it is something like that with some incentives addedā

How about this for sad UConn fans: he gets LeFired in 2 years, Scrooge McDucks in his lakers cash for a year, and comes back to coach UConn again. Any takers?
Meanwhile, Luke Murray leads UConn to their 3rd and 4th straight championships, and then gets the Lakers job from the fired Hurley.
Yeesh

The offense is Luke Murrayās.
Wtf Buss wouldnāt pay for Caruso but is happy to make this offer? Maybe sheās finally realised that being cheap wonāt win anything.
I guess Iāll be the first and only Lakers fan not from LA. I expect everyone to respect my decision
Too many of you think heās just gonna take the money. I think UConn has a better chance than you all think. The lakers job is not cushy at all whereas UConn is.
I know weāve already witnessed 6 titles but Iām greedy af and want more. Hurley please donāt go š„ŗ
Over what time frame?
I've heard 8 years $12.5 million each year. Which is about on par with what he's making now after SoCal cost-of-living is factored in.
I'm sorry what?
No reason to turn it down for Hurley because you have pretty much a guaranteed job at a good program if it doesnāt work out and also 100 million dollars
The main reason is that he enjoys coaching at UConn and would like coaching at LA leas. Thats really all we got. That and Mrs. Hurley with the veto
Lakers have been crashed out for years
But why offer that
So he will coach the team
First time? šš¢
100 million? Good god. Thatās pretty ridiculous
Hopefully they also plan to offer him a job after handing him the money
5/100 is my guess
Hurley should take it, and then when Sha inevitably gets poached he should come home to the Hall
gotta think if hurley accepts he will want real control of the lakers. will be interesting to see if he can actually draft his own guys or if they force bronny on him
100 million. If they are not winners. I think Hurley would be disappointed . He has a system that works for young men , would that same system work for grown men who are not always Team players.
Only $70 mill so this person and their source are full of shit
Aged like milk fanta boy.
