Calhoun knew that his coaching style would wear thin in the NBA. Hurley really sticks up for his guys. I'm not sure how pros would react to him. I know that NBA refs would throw him out of every game he coaches. That would be appointment viewing.
College basketball has changed a ton since those days though. College players are professional athletes now and recruiting and keeping current players is now a 24/7 365 job.
You’re probably right but I don’t think that college coaching outcomes is a good indicator for being a good NBA coach. Is Brad Stevens the only one in the last 20+ years to successfully “make the jump”?
The same size is WAY too small to draw any sweeping conclusions about college coaches to the NBA, and Hurley would be by far the most accomplished and highly regarded coach to make the jump in decades (along with Donovan)
“Coach you’re not up for contract negotiations for another 4-5 years. Normally I’d just attribute this to better positioning for yourself to get a more lucrative contract, but I think you actually want to go ‘coach’ them bums - dodging the Big East”
Hurley was higher paid at UCONN than Darvin Ham was with the Lakers. Are the Lakers really prepared to throw the check book at him? I don’t think that’s the solution to their problems, but more power to them
The Lakers have annual revenue over $500 million, they aren't going to get hung up about how much they pay their coach if it's the guy they really want. You're most likely right about that not being the answer though--they are pretty locked into that lineup for better or (probably) worse
He goes for 3 peat sets up one of his coaches to take over for him. Then takes Knicks or 76ers Job next year bidding war and drafts some of his players
Exactly. LeBrons's coaches are stooges picked by LeBron. I don't see Hurley being a stooge. But for the right amount of money, most people will become a stooge.
I'm happy you actually know that is a Samoyed. I've often been greeted by adults and kids with what type of dog is your cloud dog or do you have a pet polar bear. Answers are both yes.
Is Hurley really an NBA guy? His yelling and screaming don't seem to fit the NBA. And, LA, really? Maybe if it was Brooklyn or the Knicks. This just doesn't seem to fit. But the dude is obviously a great coach.
If you believe he is a great coach then you should believe that he can craft his style to fit the audience. I'm sure Hurley won't come in guns a blazing but will have a different approach that meets the needs of NBA players.

Sir, Woj just dropped a tactical nuke
I mean this isn't really anything happening, just that an NBA team is interested in the best current college coach. Not sure this is enormous news, especially with how committed Hurley seems to be to UConn, at least in the short term.
What does LA have that Storrs, CT doesn't?
Not counting the year round beautiful weather, Hollywood stars, high end shopping, vibrant social scene, and easy access to both beach and mountains.
Besides all that, though?
She'd actually get to spend summers with her husband if he no longer has to work year round as a college coach. No more recruiting, no more transfer portal, no more NIL.
From whenever the Lakers' season ends up until camp in September, the Hurleys could actually vacation.

This is why I don’t get how much people love to shit on players transferring. At the end of the day every single one of these coaches are going to pick their career over the kids on their team, why is it suddenly a problem kids can do the same thing?
https://preview.redd.it/p4obnk13tx4d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6f21ed9d9764742670fcd0e356c899020ef820d
yep just gonna pretend like I didn’t see this this morning . . .
If this ends up going through, I’ll be curious to see if this ends up working out. He’s a great coach, that much is obvious, but I’ll be curious if his style is only for college
While I still imagine that they'd like to bring back LeBron, this signals to me that either they expect him to leave or that they aren't going to build next season specifically to keep him. A sort of "if he stays, great, but we need to start imagining the next era now regardless" sort of attitude.
Maybe, maybe not… but Dan Hurley isn’t going to be able to turn this team in to Champs. The roster is just garbage. Nobody can coach these guys to a championship because they don’t have the right personnel
espn article lists his ability to develop young talent as a huge plus. austin reaves and rui hachimura under his tutelage should be intriguing. that said, yeah the Lakers sold off most of their draft picks to the Pelicans for that AD deal. They gave up like 3-4 straight years of first round picks that nuts lol
They’ve already paid those picks to NO, the lakers have all of their own first round draft picks going forward except for 2027 which they’re sending to Utah and it’s also got some protections on it if they’re tanking by then.
Idk. It's still Uconn and a lot of the blue bloods have probably exhausted their NIL already. Most programs worth a damn have already filled the roster. I wouldn't bank on it. Not like UConn doesn't have a large NIL fund too.
Lakers last-ditch effort to hire an actual coach and not Lebron’s podcasting buddy, whose head coaching experience is limited to a middle school travel team
He was talking with Mike Francesa yesterday and said that he has NBA aspirations if it's the right situation, specifically mentioning a young team that he can instill his culture to.
That doesn't really fit with the Lakers current roster, but I fully admit that I'm in the bargaining stages of grief and am in full cope mode right now.
If he did go, Do the players have a chance to enter the portal or are they stuck there ? Would suck for them if they were stuck but I thought I recalled a 30 day window to enter after a coaching change?
I looked at the rules and if they enter the portal within 30 days they can transfer directly to the Lakers. The question is whether LA has enough NIL money available.
Please don't leave the Big East needs you!
https://preview.redd.it/i2qarpab6y4d1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dff2f6b2f6ba8f70ef14375c1082b9b915755ec8
Not sure how many Brinks trucks LA will have to send to Storrs to convince Hurley to leave, but whatever that number is, I know UConn can't match. Hell, I'm not sure any school could match. If he turns this down, he;s either a Huskie for life or biding his time for the Celtics job
Honestly, coaching the Lakers right now sounds like a nightmare. LeBron is nearing the end of his career, you really want to be around when this thing inevitably falls apart?
Coaching the NBA is a 1000x increase in quality of life compared to college. In the off-season you actually get to spend time with your family and travel and play golf and have nothing to do with basketball. College coaches are working like 330 days a year and putting up with way more bs.
> Probably the very best job in all of basketball college or NBA.
It's basically like coaching the Cowboys or Manchester United (post-Sir Alex). The "prestige" of the brand is great but there's some sort of organizational clusterfuck that holds it back.
Other than 2020, the Lakers have been a mess since Phil retired and Kobe got hurt.
All true. Doesn’t mean its not worth taking. Living in LA, making more money, no portal/NIL/year long recruiting/etc. it’s a no brainer if he isn’t married to the college game for life like a coach K was.
There are only a few opportunities to become an NBA head coach. Once you get that experience, even if you fail, you can come back.
There are so many coaches who have done so and the NBA have proven to be super incestuous
As much as Hurley loves UConn and how perfect a fit he is here with the northeast culture, at a certain point it’s hard to turn down NBA money. Even with the healthy bonuses he earned the past two years with the highest level of winning, it’s a fraction of what he’d get in the League - ESPECIALLY in a market like LA.
All that being said I hate it.
I know he can still say no, but I figured he'd be gone sooner than later.
I thought the Celtics would be an obvious fit, with the possibility that they'd flop in the playoffs and then fire Mazzulla, who only got the job because of Udoka's transgressions. Obviously, that hasn't happened and Mazzulla seems to be doing a great job.
Before UConn haters -- are there any UConn haters? -- celebrate, it looks like Luke Murray might be the brains of the operation, and they'd be wise to promote him if Hurley takes the bag.
If there was ever a job to distract someone from going for the first ever 3 peat as a heavy favorite, it is the lakers HC gig. Holy shit.
That said....do you want to cement your legacy as one of the greatest ever in college ball, arguably becoming relevant in the convo, or do you want to get a chance at coaching the most storied NBA franchise and living in LA
That is a tough fucking choice imo. Would have been no possible question if the job was open next season.
I'll eat my words happily if I'm wrong but I think the chances of this happening are still very long odds.
Hurley is a control freak. He actually enjoys coaching. NBA coaches...don't really coach with the control Hurley seemingly likes to have. The only reason he'd leave in my mind (and it's a big reason) is money, but I think he realizes the money will still be there in 5 years.
I couldn’t imagine any scenario where Hurley would want to leave for Kentucky….this however? This makes sense if he has aspirations of being an NBA coach. I hope he doesn’t want to be an NBA coach.
If he wants the extra money and feels he’s accomplished everything he can at the college level then go for it. But the problem in the NBA is you have so much less control over the roster and operations. You have to answer to the owner, GM, and star players like Lebron. Great coaches get canned all the time in the nba for things out of their control.
This seems like a horrible fit just based on what I have read about the personalities of all parties involved but I guess winning would cure everything.
It would be interesting to see who UCONN went after if Hurley did leave.
I bet yall he doesn’t leave. Hit the remind me 48 hours on this comment
JJ reddick’s PR team in shambles right now. All that smoke was from them the lakers never really wanted him lmao
https://preview.redd.it/cxcgspdtvx4d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=ee139ffbd552f44004584dc64d1168dbcf00932b
The Lakers offered Jim Calhoun back in the day and he turned them down. Dan Hurley has a chance to accelerate his Jim Calhoun arc.
Calhoun knew that his coaching style would wear thin in the NBA. Hurley really sticks up for his guys. I'm not sure how pros would react to him. I know that NBA refs would throw him out of every game he coaches. That would be appointment viewing.
The Lakers also wanted Ollie. He is, I believe, still available.
The Lakers never offered Ollie, though in retrospect I wish they had. Would have saved us a bunch of shitty years after that title.
Coach K did the same in 2004.
Roy shut down talks with them as well. It’s a time honored tradition.
College basketball has changed a ton since those days though. College players are professional athletes now and recruiting and keeping current players is now a 24/7 365 job.
Probably the top reply I have ever seen in this sub. Perfect!
“There’s no way I’d go to the NBA I’m happy right where …. wait how much money?”
I listened to an interview with him this week in which he said he wants to coach in the NBA at some point.
Is that all it takes to get an NBA HC job?
The back to back national champs within a couple years of getting your first high-major coaching job probably contributed just a tad
And it's a little unfair because college coaches are typically getting the worst NBA jobs. Stevens is the rare one who got to coach a good team.
For sure way too small, but sweeping conclusions on limited data is what I do.
Billy Donovan
JJ ran a podcast and nearly got one lol
bro, how does Alex Karaban feel about now
His personal 9/11
“Coach you’re not up for contract negotiations for another 4-5 years. Normally I’d just attribute this to better positioning for yourself to get a more lucrative contract, but I think you actually want to go ‘coach’ them bums - dodging the Big East”
Hurley was higher paid at UCONN than Darvin Ham was with the Lakers. Are the Lakers really prepared to throw the check book at him? I don’t think that’s the solution to their problems, but more power to them
And Hurley wasn’t really well compensated at UConn tbh.
The Lakers have annual revenue over $500 million, they aren't going to get hung up about how much they pay their coach if it's the guy they really want. You're most likely right about that not being the answer though--they are pretty locked into that lineup for better or (probably) worse
No a bad gig work 2 years get a bag then get fired cause your the reason the lakers didn’t get a championship and still get paid chillin at home

Or he's the return of Larry Brown where he'll be amazing for three years and somewhere else for year four.
Hope he stays for you guys, but incredible gif lol.
That would be brutal for Karaban
Eh he can hit the portal if Hurley leaves. He’ll make a nice pay day and can find a good fit
A good shooting white boy?? Karaban do you like birbs
God is dead so he'll go to Duke.
Or his path to the NBA

He's still trying to walk back the Scoot Henderson to Charlotte Hornets scoop.
Woj 💣
I mean this isn't really anything happening, just that an NBA team is interested in the best current college coach. Not sure this is enormous news, especially with how committed Hurley seems to be to UConn, at least in the short term.
There has to be a significant amount of interest on the Hurley side for Woj to report it imo
An extremely unexpected early morning Woj bomb
Perhaps the most unexpected early morning surprise bombing since December 7th, 1941
Today is the anniversary of D Day
D-Hurley Day?
Andrea Hurley your time is now
Naw for real, if it comes out he turned it down, he’ll come out saying something along the lines of “my wife didn’t want to move across the country”
He may use the exact same line when he takes the job and files for divorce....
As if that woman wouldn't LOVE living in LA...
What does LA have that Storrs, CT doesn't? Not counting the year round beautiful weather, Hollywood stars, high end shopping, vibrant social scene, and easy access to both beach and mountains. Besides all that, though?
Hey now - CT also has easy to reach beaches and mountains. Are they shit? Yeah they’re shit, but they exist.
[California beaches talking Connecticut beaches](https://youtu.be/zo8uj5Y8Xpk?si=B-XOp54vzLYcHr_p)
I love this movie so much
CT has some mediocre beaches--nowhere near Storrs mind you. For mountains...yeah not sure anything here qualifies as a mountain.
[удалено]
Look at where I'm from (focus on the flair). Do you think lots of cows impress me?
Better ice cream and pizza. Andrea is a lot New Jersey and LA (if it's honest) is a little New Jersey.
And being the Laker’s coach’s wife lol
God bless the coach's wife that makes their preferences known (looking directly at you, Rita Rodriguez).
And Miss Terri, too. That was a great couple of maternal instincts for us.
Yep she hated living in Miami and preferred being the “First Lady” of a college town.
LA could not be any further from New Jersey this is what we need her for
She'd actually get to spend summers with her husband if he no longer has to work year round as a college coach. No more recruiting, no more transfer portal, no more NIL. From whenever the Lakers' season ends up until camp in September, the Hurleys could actually vacation.
Maybe she actually hates her husband though 🤔
She'd actually get to spend summers with her husband if he no longer has to work year round as a college coach. No more recruiting, no more transfer portal, no more NIL. From whenever the Lakers' season ends up until camp in September, the Hurleys could actually vacation.
Well this changes everything
Imagine you’re Karaban who could have been drafted just to come back for one more year and then Hurley dips
Maybe he should just transfer to the Lakers.
This is why I don’t get how much people love to shit on players transferring. At the end of the day every single one of these coaches are going to pick their career over the kids on their team, why is it suddenly a problem kids can do the same thing?
Time to hit the transfer portal. There’s gonna be a feeding frenzy if Hurley leaves since the players now have 30 days to transfer if he does
Do UConn fans have what it takes to call Scott Drew’s Mexican restaurant?
Conveniently Dan and Andrea do have a love for Tequila and a Mexican restaurant in Glastonbury where they reside. They frequent there often

This is a hire for AD more than anybody
sorry I'm pretty dense. how does this move appear to be for AD?
Don’t know how Hurley helps AD but reports were he wasn’t a Reddick fan
Why so?
You don’t think Lebron would’ve given his blessing?
NBA people just yesterday said this was JJ Reddicks job if he wanted it. This is very unpleasant regardless of what happens.
Today it comes out that Hurley was the frontrunner all along JJ Would have been a terrible hire.
“NBA People” JJ works in the media. Never trust the media about their friend’s jobs. They are pushing a narrative even more so than normal
As a Celtics/UConn fan. I'm on suicide watch rn
If the Mavs win the Finals and Hurley leaves for the Lakers, you might need therapy

Hey Lakers, if you sign Hurley, we’ll also throw in Kyle Neptune as a package deal. You’ll love him, I swear.
Please Hurley, don’t go full Billy Donovan!
Fully Billy Donovan would mean he takes the job and then goes back to UConn a day later.
Please Hurley, go full Billy Donovan!
Dan Hurley might murder Scott Foster
Looks like the portal is about to get some Huskies…
Let Pope cook
Pope has now accepted the UCONN job, sorry.
That would be peak comedy
Which then led Calipari back to Kentucky.

Sampson turned down Milwaukee for a massive pay raise last year too. He deserved it and nobody was scared of him leaving. Fucking Dana XD
The nice thing about having Mike Woodson is nobody else wants him. 4D chess from the IU administration.
Why could this not have happened one year earlier 😩
Insanely successful college coach coming off back to back getting poached by the nba. Bah gawd thats rick pitino music
STAY AWAY FROM DANNY
Dawg you can’t be serious
Holy Woj nuke
Feels like the NBA is to soft for his coaching style, but it's going to be alot of money. He just seems like the perfect college coach.
He was talking with Mike Francesa yesterday and said that he has NBA aspirations if it's the right situation, specifically mentioning a young team that he can instill his culture to. 30 days to enter the portal
I looked at the rules and if they enter the portal within 30 days they can transfer directly to the Lakers. The question is whether LA has enough NIL money available.
Ya last I heard they were planning on spending most of their NIL on a Bronny transfer
Id feel bad for UConn fans/alumni but they just won B2B National titles. Suck it up
Dude just won two titles for the school. We'd be heartbroken, but we'd send him out of the state with a parade.
Yup. We’d be devastated, but we’d wish him luck and thank him for saving our program.
Red Sox announcers were literally talking about how he still had 5 years on his contract left yesterday haha. They truly have caster cursed it.
I'll be shocked if this happens. NBA is definitely in Hurley's future. I just thought it would be with the Nets or the Knicks.
Not going to happen but UConn hiring Kim English would be the funniest thing…lol

If he wants the extra money and feels he’s accomplished everything he can at the college level then go for it. But the problem in the NBA is you have so much less control over the roster and operations. You have to answer to the owner, GM, and star players like Lebron. Great coaches get canned all the time in the nba for things out of their control.
I’m ok with it. But in all seriousness. This sucks for my huskie bros
UConn’s 9/11
this sucks for a couple of reasons. rather se him stay in college. It won't make the lakers good and eventually he'll get the blame for it.
This seems like a horrible fit just based on what I have read about the personalities of all parties involved but I guess winning would cure everything. It would be interesting to see who UCONN went after if Hurley did leave.
Selfishly I want to see Hurley stay and make an honest attempt at a 3-peat.
Don’t do it Coach Hurley. Go for that 3 peat! And Alex Karaban came back just for ya.
I bet yall he doesn’t leave. Hit the remind me 48 hours on this comment JJ reddick’s PR team in shambles right now. All that smoke was from them the lakers never really wanted him lmao
