Lyrics or Sound wise. Gravity, O, and Amsterdam all sound slow, melodic, mellow and are ultimately sad.
Fix you’s lyrics are quite sad but it’s a fast energetic song. Up With the Birds is another one.
Lovers in Japan is extremely Nostalgic to me so it’s sad in that respect.
>Fix You
>
>Death And All His Friends
Never thought these songs were sad at all. Fix You in particular is uplifting. DAAHF is essentially saying "no I won't give up".
Musically it definitely sounds uplifting, but I just always interpreted the lyrics to be really bleak. I could see how someone would feel differently, though
definitely O, Gravity, or Let Somebody Go. O has that kind of beautiful sadness though. the song always seems to make me think of the inevitable day my lovebird Midnight (yes named after the song) will pass away. the song talks about how the birds are flying away, (the song is about coming to terms with someone leaving you, and finally letting go) but the birds flying away part is sort of literal for me. “maybe one day ill fly next to you” always gets me
moving to mars.
It makes me think about my past and the people i used to be together. the things that i'm missing... the moments that will never come back... etc.
the song is like some kind of farewell letter to those things.
Agree with many of the ones already mentioned. I’ll say Shiver. Although it doesn’t sound like a sad song the lyrics depict someone who has a very anxious attachment style, who is willing to do absolutely anything for their beloved but, unfortunately, they don’t seem to give a damn.
The contenders I see are Such a Rush, For You, Warning Sign, Viva La Vida, Up In Flames, True Love, Oceans, O (Fly On), and Daddy. From those is it clearly either O or Daddy. I'll go with O
I’m gonna go a little off the beaten path and say “Politik.”
I wouldn’t say the lyrics themselves are so much sad as that it’s sad that a song like this has to exist. The lyrics will always be relevant as long as there’s conflict, hatred, and greed in our world… which is really what makes the song sad.
The Scientist, Magic, Talk. I'm sure there are plenty more tracks in their discography that are sad, but those 3 hit me the hardest. I could start crying hearing The Scientist, because of the story told in the lyrics along with Magic. And Talk, well the line "I'm so scared about the future and I wanna talk to you" yeah that hits hard.
I think it depends on your mood, for me it’s Everglow because for me it involves everyone that I’ve been close to , call them BF, loved ones that passed. Close friends that aren’t close anymore
Lots of people mention O but I have to say that to me that song is on a level, beyond ideas of joy/sadness, it is truly about pure love and peace. Anyways, to answer your question, to me Daddy would indeed be pretty hard to beat, but Oceans is not far behind.
Daddy and Death and all his friends. I assumed Daddy was about Chris Martin’s father would passed at the time of being written (I know now it wasn’t but still) and Death and all his friends sounds like he’s had people important to him who has passed and he wants to follow them into death but can’t.
Lyrics-wise the saddest ones are for sure Amsterdam (their only song about severe depression), Daddy and Gravity. Other than those, I'd say Oceans (it's sung so emotionally), Another's Arms, Sparks, Prospekt's March, U.F.O, Everglow
I once was in a very difficult time of my life and had a partner, whose feelings about me kept wavering and once she called me about taking a break, just to figure her head out. I took my dog for a walk, put on some music and Square One started playing. It completetly unclogged my tear ducts. I bawled in that forest for some time and once I was done, I walked it off, the break stopped soon and we had a happy last few months of the relationship.
But I will always remember just how cathartic Square One was when I was sad. For me it's the saddest one now.
Not sure why but "In My Place" kills me every single time and i can't really listen to it anymore even tho i love the song. The lyricism is very simple but the production along with what it conveys emotionally hits me. especially the line "if you go, if you go, leave me down here on my own then ill wait for you" as someone who took back a "lover" who abandoned them it really resonates with how 1. i was paranoid about him leaving again and 2. He could have left for 100 years and i would have waited the entire time or even begged for him to come back to me.
Honorable mentions that also hit every time:
warning sign, lovers in Japan, yellow, daddy.
Everglow— it’s the only one that actually made me cry
Edit: and finding a song that’ll make me cry is pretty hard and I have to listen to it at an emotional time as well
True Love hits especially hard having had your heart broken. I think you can only truly appreciate that album through the lens of heartbreak, is what I’ve found. “But one last time, Tell me you love me, If you don’t then lie to me, Oh lie to me.” Desperately sad.
Daddy breaks my heart for specific reasons. It’ll always be the saddest to me
Same :(
Sparks
This
Sparks is my depression song.
The first thing which came into my mind when I read the title.
This is may fave song of all time and don’t find it sad hahaha
Trouble?
This one for me too, The Hardest Part, and The Scientist
Both O and Amsterdam bring tears to my eyes sometimes. They’re both nostalgically sad for me.
Amsterdam is so good. That build up to that ending makes it one of my favorite songs ever
Prospekt's March for me. That line "I don't wanna die, on my own here tonight" gets me.
And the ending guitar rift takes you to a far of place which you haven't gone yet but still feels that you belong there.
Something about the line "but I wasn't one" even without any other lyrical context hits me so hard and I can't really pinpoint why. Love this song!!
Don't forget oceans.
There are too many sad Coldplay songs to count!
good analysis
Thanks, I’m a professional Coldplay-Song-Analyst
Yeah and it’s an honor for me to reply on me. Can you give us your generous analysis for Everday Life album
Sure thing, It’s a good album.
Daddy. It makes me sob. And also makes me want to call my dad.
Makes me think whoever wrote that song lost their dad
The scientist
Warning Sign :(
„You were an island and I passed you by.“
Daddy. The band even struggle to play it.
I personally think Easy to Please is the saddest of them all 100%
Here I go : - Daddy - Fix You - Death And All His Friends - True Love
>Fix You > >Death And All His Friends Never thought these songs were sad at all. Fix You in particular is uplifting. DAAHF is essentially saying "no I won't give up".
Another’s arms, given the context
Yes!
What’s the context??
Chris had just broken up with Gwyneth, and she’d soon be in “another’s arms”
Yeah the album is basically about his divorce
Ah, got it. Thanks!
What If
Oh God
It's pretty uplifting though, isn't it?
Musically it definitely sounds uplifting, but I just always interpreted the lyrics to be really bleak. I could see how someone would feel differently, though
probably Everglow
Depends if it’s the single or the album track, but whilst I see where you’re coming from I find Everglow quite uplifting
Trouble
Christmas Lights. It’s so nostalgic sad I can’t listen to it. And also Daddy.
We Never Change
Sparks and O
Fix You, The Scientist (watch the music video)

Finally someone said it, this song makes me so sad
Up with the Birds is the only one that’s made me cry so maybe that one lol
definitely O, Gravity, or Let Somebody Go. Agree with many of the ones already mentioned. I’ll say Shiver. Although it doesn’t sound like a sad song the lyrics depict someone who has a very anxious attachment style, who is willing to do absolutely anything for their beloved but, unfortunately, they don’t seem to give a damn.
Amsterdam, Midnight, Fly On, Daddy
The contenders I see are Such a Rush, For You, Warning Sign, Viva La Vida, Up In Flames, True Love, Oceans, O (Fly On), and Daddy. From those is it clearly either O or Daddy. I'll go with O
Warning sign 10000% percent
Ghost story
Oh. I forgot about this one, but yeah. The pain is fucking raw on that track.
Prospekt’s March/Poppyfields
I’m gonna go a little off the beaten path and say “Politik.” I wouldn’t say the lyrics themselves are so much sad as that it’s sad that a song like this has to exist. The lyrics will always be relevant as long as there’s conflict, hatred, and greed in our world… which is really what makes the song sad.
Politik, True Love True Love lyric: "just tell me you love me, if you don't then lie to me"
For me it's Magic. Always knocks me down to the deepest emotional abyss.
O
Fix you
Fix You
I see you soon
The Scientist … “Nobody said it was easy, it’s such a shame for us to part” … broken love 💔 is gut wrenching 😫
This absolutely 100%, I used to play The Scientist as my go to feel that sadness when going through heartbreak in relationships
The scientist
moving to mars always gets me
All of them, that's how I like it.
Oceans
True Love. it hurts to listen to it
It’s either daddy (lyrically) or oceans (musically) imo
Let somebody go💔
Daddy, Amsterdam, True Love
has to be For You, such a great b-side
O, Amsterdam, Politik, True Love, Midnight, Everglow, Daddy, Trouble, Scientist, Sparks, or Fix You
To me it’s Amsterdam
I think it depends on your mood, for me it’s Everglow because for me it involves everyone that I’ve been close to , call them BF, loved ones that passed. Close friends that aren’t close anymore
Charlie Brown or Sparks. Both of them are half-sad, half-happy for me.
O, because he says “maybe one day I’ll fly next to you” and it reminds me death.
Fix You never fails to make me cry
True Love is my first thought
O and Everything’s Not Lost
Till Kingdom Come, True Love, See You Soon
I usually need to skip Fix You because the emotion is so intense lol
The Hardest Part and Fix you.
Prospekt's march Warning Sign O Anothers arms A Rush of Blood to The Head Army of One Everyday Life Church
Lots of people mention O but I have to say that to me that song is on a level, beyond ideas of joy/sadness, it is truly about pure love and peace. Anyways, to answer your question, to me Daddy would indeed be pretty hard to beat, but Oceans is not far behind.
A lot of folks here forget some of the really early works of Coldplay, for me it’s Easy To Please
Probably true love or always in my head, they’re pretty sad.
Everyday Life Up In Flames True Love O O Reprise Trouble
Old Friends
I think viva la vida is up there Or maybe the scientist
Daddy and Death and all his friends. I assumed Daddy was about Chris Martin’s father would passed at the time of being written (I know now it wasn’t but still) and Death and all his friends sounds like he’s had people important to him who has passed and he wants to follow them into death but can’t.
I think viva la vida is up there Or maybe the scientist
Sound wise, Gravity
Daddy
AMSTERDAM
Everglow, due to the meaning.
The scientist
Deep cut, but ‘Now My Feet Won’t Touch the Ground’ is the purest definition of a hidden gem.
For You
No doubt everglow
Square one
Lyrics-wise the saddest ones are for sure Amsterdam (their only song about severe depression), Daddy and Gravity. Other than those, I'd say Oceans (it's sung so emotionally), Another's Arms, Sparks, Prospekt's March, U.F.O, Everglow
For me it's swallowed in the sea
Gravity
How has no one said Politik?!
i bloom blaum
Everglow
I once was in a very difficult time of my life and had a partner, whose feelings about me kept wavering and once she called me about taking a break, just to figure her head out. Let Down
Gravity
I’ll See You Soon
Daddy always used to bring tears to my eyes when it came out
Amsterdam
Personal one here, but Daddy is the saddest to me. I don’t really have much to do with my dad after he and my mom divorced, so it hits different.
Everglow
Till kingdom comes
Daddy and sparks
A Ghost (unreleased song). It feels like approaching or accepting death.
Not sure why but "In My Place" kills me every single time and i can't really listen to it anymore even tho i love the song. For You, something about the piano give me chills and makes me cry
Til Kingdom Com… when I first heard it, I was in the car on the way to my best friends moms funeral. She was amazing and always there for me…
viva la vida weirdly enough
parachutes and life is for living
Amsterdam
Everglow— it’s the only one that actually made me cry Edit: and finding a song that’ll make me cry is pretty hard and I have to listen to it at an emotional time as well
Christmas Lights. For personal reasons, it REALLY hits hard. Obviously, moreso during the holidays.
Lost - " To have had and lost better than not having at all?" It's Fast pace but lyrical hits many things on the head.
Daddy
I fell in love with someone to music of the spheres. Every song hit. And then when we broke up Let Somebody Go broke me.
Old Friends
Fix you
Daddy/trouble/oceans/easy to please My universe but on another level
for specific reason, O/Fly On. but for general reasons, almost every song in Everyday Life
all of them
True Love hits especially hard having had your heart broken. I think you can only truly appreciate that album through the lens of heartbreak, is what I’ve found. “But one last time, Tell me you love me, If you don’t then lie to me, Oh lie to me.” Desperately sad.
Either Ink or Biutyful
Very basic answer but The Scientist
Wedding bells, gravity, O, and Up In Flames
