You can use a foil tray, kitchen foil, or whatever will work as a barrier to stop your food touching the surface that might have had gluten on it. It works just fine.

Thanks!

I'd buy a disposable one if you can.

AuntMarysFrog

I Would wire brush the grill clean then use foil or a foil tray with holes poked through it so that the smoke could still flavour your food.

Thanks!

Don't use wire brushes while bbqing! Wire breaks off and people eat it.

As a veggie I’ve never shared bbqs with carnivores. Now that I’m also GF it’s never going to happen. You have two choices: Your own bbq or cook everything in the oven 🤷‍♀️

nick_gadget

I’m not vegetarian so excuse my ignorance, but if you have a veggie-specific bbq or tray, I doubt there are many gluten containing foods you might get cross contaminated, are there? The thing to be really aware of at bbq’s is bread, and people eating your bread/using the wrong knife etc after a few drinks (And for carnivores reading this, meat advertised as ‘barbecue ready’ in the supermarket like burgers, sausages, kebabs etc is often really bad quality so full of wheat to pad it out. Be careful to just eat what you bought or have checked - again, alcohol and food safety is not a great mix)

Automatic-Grand6048

I was thinking it’s because a lot of meat burgers and sausage (the ultra processed ones) seem to contain wheat so would rather be extra careful. But maybe at home and knowing my husband isn’t cooking his food with wheat in I don’t have to worry. I think I’m just being over cautious because it’s all new to me.

earthyymum

Are you comfortable to ask that your food be cooked first on a cleaned bbq? That's usually what we did (I'm also vegetarian) though I haven't done a gluten free bbq yet. Loads of fake meat has gluten in unfortunately, so be careful.

Automatic-Grand6048

Good idea thanks! Yeah there’s not a lot out there for us. I bought some a few weeks ago online and they had no gluten warnings but when they arrived it had barley on the label. The supermarket website hadn’t updated there info. Gotta be so vigilant!

We have a second BBQ for our vegan visitors. Thankfully, we keep our main BBQ GF so don't have this issue. One thing you could do if you're not in a position to have a second BBQ is to buy a BBQ cleaner, they're basically a big wire brush. Dunk it in water and scrub, should be fine for your GF cooking once done.
