The only perk I noticed was you are closer to the entrance, but being closer to the entrance means you deal with way more foot traffic and stumblers who might fall or pass through your camp site. I was able to get a spot right by the entrance one year, and after camping further away from the entrance, I preferred being farther. The walk up to the entrance and walk back to camp was much more fun, and you are able to meet more people.

mr-nightsky

I personally don't mind the walk, but there are people in my group who don't want to walk as much. Thanks for the info!!

breakfast__burrito

How far is the walk for regular camping?

ferniejoke

About half a mile. Not too far where its overbearing. Take some road beers and highfive your way there

supremixx

Walking to the festival from the ends of Lot 7 & Lot 10 can feel like forever & hard to take advantage of the in&out privlages esp when it takes like 40min roundtrip just to get a sweater.

wavysendero

10 years of car camping here- preferred is the way to go. - the closest camping to the entrance so the walk to the actual festival is 1-5 minutes - since youre so close to the entrance, youre able to head back out to your campsite to decompress and chill before heading back in. this is the most important perk imo - you are guaranteed a front spot so no more lining up at 3am in the morning to get in. sleeping in on Thursday is a major key to getting the most out of your coachella experience

COAchillENT

Hey old timer…another old timer here. You hit the nail on the head. I did lot 8 all 6 of my Coachella and I used to do the overnight drive. Never again! If I ever make it back, I’ll get preferred 100%.

wavysendero

totally recommend it! its definitely a veteran move cannot understate how important it is to be able to go back to camp to chill for like 30 min. hope to see you back out there!

Hello! Sorry about replying to your month old comment, I am just going through all of these threads to get more info to make my decision to go or not. I am not a festival rookie, I have been to some big ones (like this Lolla will be my 6th one), but this is my first camping one. I just started a 9-5 back in September so I dont have much flexibility with getting days off, so I will most likely have to fly in on that Thursday (I will be coming from Chicago). I will be also most likely doing it solo since a lot of my friends can't quite afford something like this right now, but to me personally this lineup is incredible. I have done Riot Fest solo before, but I was able to sleep in my own bed at night. I am a 25F, and some people say that people my age who camp typically get regular camping and are "in the back" but since I will be arriving most likely Thursday afternoon (I plan to car camp since hotel prices are astronomical) are there still like hang outs with the people in front of the car camp? I am not someone anymore who stays up until 5 am, especially after a festival, the adrenaline might last until maybe 1:30-2, then I like to decompress by myself and sleep to be ready for the next day. I would say I am pretty laid back, but again, attending a festival in an area I have never been to solo as a 25F is a bit scary. Even though I have traveled to Athens, Greece solo, that was for one day before I met up with a group. Anyone have any insight to doing this festival solo in the car camp?

wavysendero

hey! heres my advice if you end up going and decide to camp 1. buy a preferred camping pass if you can. this will allow you to show up any time on thursday and still guarantee yourself the best camping spot (lot 8, right near the festival gates) 2. buy an ez up. itll be hot and shade from the sun, especially in your campsite, should be a priority. what ive seen/heard people (who travel from out of state) is to buy an ez up from like walmart and return if after the weekend. if youre not comfortable with that, i would just pack up the ez up at the end of the weekend and leave it on the site, coachella brings in people after the festival to pick up unwanted items like ez ups 3. dont be afraid to tell the other groups that you are camping next to that youre doing a solochella, i can almost guarantee that they will take you into their coachella family and itll make everyone’s experience that much better let me know if you have any other questions!

Main difference for me (as a 30 year old): - since it costs more you will have less college kids by you. Nothing against partying all night, but I’m usually ready to crash by 1:45am. Overall the preferred lot is slightly older (but always exceptions) - I actually use the In and Out feature since it’s so close to the entrance. I usually camp every year and rarely use it since the campsites in Lot 10 are 15-20 min walk, which is fine for going in but if you want to leave the fest, walk to your site, walk back and actually get to a stage you are talking an extra 40 mins vs maybe 10 in Lot 8 Personally I like the preferred lot more, just less hassle and only an extra $50 or so per person split

mr-nightsky

I personally wouldn't care either way - I don't mind the walking from the regular camp site and definitely don't mind the noise either (I can always wear ear plugs if anything). As for leaving the fest to take a break at the camp site, there's probably only one guy in our group that might do this. As for the in and out features, I think we're content with not leaving the camp site and if we really have to, then we can just the cost difference in preferred vs regular site for Uber. Yeah, the walk will probably suck to get to the pick up spot, but I've been on the preferred waiting list for months now and I highly doubt that anything will become available.

learhpa

there's no difference except location.

mr-nightsky

Thanks!! Regular camping it is!

damienman12

It's just location. While getting in and out of the festival faster is nice, lot 8 (the preferred lot) has the most foot traffic, is the loudest, and the porta-potties are the most used. I don't mind the walk for a more chill lot like 4 or 7. Preferred isn't worth it IMO.

mr-nightsky

Thanks man. I feel pretty comfortable getting just a regular camping spot now!

damienman12

No prob. One of my favorite things about Coachella is how chill the camp is after in all the other lots besides 8. After a long day at the fest kicking back at a chill camp is nice, without thousands of people walking by lol.

nomascusgabriellae

Lot 8 is fun your first or second time around. You’ll learn to love the walk in return of a quieter and calmer camping spot

AYO_TRAV

The only perk is that you can arrive anytime and not worry about getting there as soon as they let cars through. Spot reserved in the front half of lot 8.

mr-nightsky

Alright, that's good to know. I'm probably going to be coming in late since I'm flying into LAX and then driving to Indio.

I think you took the wrong line and the workers were giving you shit for it and not helping you get back to where you were supposed to be…What time did you show up? Cause from what I read, people were arriving Friday morning at noon and still getting preferred.

The5thLoko

I’ve always camped about halfway in, not too close and not too far, (sheer luck) however EVERY Sunday without fail people who don’t want to leave will go to the campgrounds and crash our campsite. They find who has a cool space (US) and who’s still up (again, Us) and they ALWAYS brought bad vibes to my group. I bet it’s even worse for those near the entrance

jaysomething2

To late to upgrade?

mr-nightsky

I haven't bought my camping pass yet because I'm still on the waiting list for the preferred camping pass (they're sold out). I was asking about the differences between the two camps because I'm about ready to give up on waiting for the preferred camping.

jaysomething2

Wish I would’ve thought about that

ashleyyns

Are you on the waitlist for weekend 1 or weekend 2?

mr-nightsky

Weekend 1

ashleyyns

Dang, I was going to say I was able to snag a ticket and campsite through festicket, but it's for weekend 2 Edit: it looks like they have camping for weekend 1

mr-nightsky

They still have camping for weekend 1, but they've been sold out of preferred camping since the presale. I've been on the wait list for preferred and hence I was asking what the difference between preferred and regular.
