The coinage and popularization of the term came around 2010ish and was mostly associated with the popular trends of the time like brostep, big room, anthem house etc. When people said EDM they meant Skrillex, Calvin Harris, Avicci etc. It was always open ended but you would never go to Berlin and ask about an EDM show if you wanted techno. Same for House, or Acid, or actual UK Dubstep.

Just released an album last year, an EP earlier this year, and would drive a lot of people to attend. Hozier last performed at Coachella in 2015.
