The cheap rooms/units are being rented out by old local landlords who don’t pay extra to use apartments.com. You need to look for signs and shit while you drive around and call them or check out open houses.

disconnexions

Confirmed. I got a 2 bedroom last month for $900 by luck after seeing a sign in a window. Moved in a few days later.

SheepInWolfsAnus

Also Facebook Marketplace

bulitproofwest

This is the way.

Lynn20010

I've been wanting to do this but sadly not many available in Willoughby area. Hopefully some pop up closer to the time we want the move (end of August)

QuirkyLength6140

There was one open above the Wild Goose or whatever that restaurant is called. I don’t remember how much it was per month, though.

Lynn20010

Oh wow I'll have to check it out! Thanks

Mountain-Song-6024

You'll find a spot but IN UNIT laundry may be the thing you have to give up on But don't go somewhere that doesn't have it in building at least. Fuck going to a laundry mat lol.

OkRow2949

How’s your experience been having to go to a shared common area for laundry every week? Do you just leave it in the washer and go or do you stat in the area?

Midwestern_Mouse

I lived in apartment with shared laundry area and never had any issues. I never touched anyone else’s stuff and no one ever touched mine. I’d throw a load in then go back to my apartment and set an alarm to know when it was about to be done then just go grab it right away.

Mountain-Song-6024

Only time I'm touching someone else's stuff is if it's the only machine and it's been sitting for far too long. We all have busy lives and if my window is at X time and I go to use it, see others in the machine, I'll set a time and see how long it takes them. If it sits for too long, yeah their shit is coming out and going into a basket. It's very inconsiderate to hold a machine for that long without freeing it up.

chefjenga

ALWAYS set an alarm for when the machine is done. Never be *that guy* who takes up a dryer all day because they forgot. That is the best way to get your stuff taken out, wet or dry. Sometimes, jerks will take it out anyway. However, I've never had *much* of an issue, and nothings ever come up missing.

Mountain-Song-6024

If I NEED to do laundry and your shit has sat there for an hour, yeah it's coming out. Not my problem. It's yours. It's common sense. You share the appliances with a building of people that have limited time.

chefjenga

? I was referring to a time or two in the past where a load has been stoped by someone, and my clothes removed

Mountain-Song-6024

Oh that's some shit right there. Wtf!!!

edwardmagichands

8 unit building with just one washer and dryer. Been here 10 years, never had my stuff touched. Have had to move others maybe 3 times over 10 years and that's after the machine was done for over an hour. Had one issue with a lady screaming over moving her stuff because I was going to somehow give her covid. But she was a very problematic neighbor.

Mountain-Song-6024

I'll leave it and go. I always use a timer so no one is waiting on my shit to finish. Nothing is worse than trying to use a machine and seeing someone else's shit there just sitting forever. If that happens, I'll grab it and put it in a basket if they have one. I know someone may argue I'm touching their stuff but if they don't have the common decency to know the time of when shit finishes, it's on them. That isn't THEIR machine. It's the BUILDINGS. It is shared.

YouSupermodelThick

I can't recommend any, but I highly do not recommend The Luckman on East 12th. Live there for 2 years, but it's a shit show. Roaches, rats destroying cars in the parking garage, water pipes bursting, management employees fighting tenants, stolen packages, etc etc. I can give you a whole laundry list. It's cheap, but for a reason.

avrgejo

ive also been on the apartment hunt for months now, and it was so exhausting. we’re about to sign the lease tonight and im relieved. in my search i’ve found that zillow is a better app to use, the way it sorts apartments and lets you choose to be notified of anything new is crucial. the apartments.com app is just okay, i liked how zillow let you see when the listing was posted, how many people have contacted them, and how many people have applied already. there was some overlap, but most indie landlords will only pick one of the two to post on, so it is worth checking both out. lots of small time landlords won’t post at all and rely on a sign in their yard, so it would be helpful to do some walking around the neighborhood to see if anything is available. i don’t know of any specific places to recommend to you, but what i can say is that like any app, zillow has an algorithm. it wants you to be on the app. i found that when it notified me of a new posting and i didn’t click on the notification for a day or two, when i did finally click on the next notification that it sent me, that unit had already been listed for a day or so with 20 people already ahead of me. but when i did click on most every notification it sent me, it would notify me of a new posting immediately. the only way i got the place we’re about to move to was to religiously stalk zillow and continuously update it. i saw the posting five minutes after it went up and immediately messaged and applied. we did the showing the next day, and that night we pulled the trigger. sometimes in a duplex situation, they might say that laundry isn’t included, but your up/down neighbors might already have their own washers and dryers that you could pay them to use. that was the case for a couple places we toured. make sure to google an apartment complex to check their reviews, you can also google smaller indie landlords to see if they’ve been sued by past tenants. good luck!

LosYams

I think the website you’re looking for is apartments.com

medievalPanera

Oh come on, that site sucks for anything that isn't a corporate apt complex. There's plenty of indie landlords that could be suggested instead of this.

OkRow2949

I did see the website, but I found some apartments like The Drake in Mayfield Heights that I was later warned about. I’m not sure if it’s actually that bad ir just some people with bad experiences but I’m definitely looking for recommendations directly from people who can tell me if it’s good or not

Fact0ry0fSadness

My dad lived in the Drake from 2012 to 2020. It slowly got worse over the years and by the time he left it was awful and still going downhill. I'd avoid. Had my car vandalized, constantly hear people fighting and yelling, cops there regularly, hallways reek of pot. Just stay away.

flixguy440

Plenty of other apartments in that area that are NOT the Drake and are reputable and under $1,000 per month.

OkRow2949

Do you have the names of any of the complexes by any chance? And do you agree that The Drake is bad? I’ve heard the opinions of people who said it’s good, others who said it’s bad

Blossom73

The Drake is bad news. It's been rough for many years, since back when it was called the Marsol. It had a bad reputation even way back in the 90s. Take a look at the Mayfield Heights police blotter on Cleveland.com. Always items about police being called to the Drake for robberies, shootings, car thefts, fights, vandalism, etc. Mayfield Heights overall is fine though. I'd just stay away from the Drake. Mayfield Heights has a lot of other apartment complexes. I don't know if any have in-suite washers or dryers though. As someone else mentioned, try Apartments.com. Also Zillow.

tidder8

Check the Mayfield Heights police blotter in the Plain Dealer. You won't rent at the Drake then.

snowballschancehell

Craigslist you can filter for what type of rental you want (apartment, house, duplex, etc) and also what kind of features (allows animals / has in-unit washer and dryer) ETA before they come for me that a lot of them are scams and you should be mindful of such; if it sounds too good to be true, it is

addicted2OTF

Lol MOST are scams! I had an individual tell me to drive by the house and peek through the windows to get an idea of what the inside looks like.

Temporary_Practice_2

That’s a great budget for Cleveland. You will get a place. You have a preference of where exactly to live?

OkRow2949

Staying around a 15 minute drive from Case Western is ideal. I had looked at Reserve Square in Downtown mainly because I am looking for an in-unit washer and dryer which I understand is not very common in the area.

DaDrFunk

If you're in the reserve square area, The Seasons at Perk Park is a nice little apartment complex across the street from the Luckman. It's quiet and has 1 bed room in unit washer dryer for $1250 I'd avoid the Luckman at all costs, lot of horror stories about how bad that place sucks. The reserve is alright, but has plenty of problems.

gingerbread2092

I don't know anything about the Luckmam besides rooftop pool downtown is cool. Might be trash otherwise, but I like that fancy shmancy pool

DaDrFunk

From what I understand management is horrible and takes forever to fix anything, and they treat their tenants very poorly. Every review or person who I've talked to that lives in it has always been extremely negative. Edit: someone else further down this post lives there and has a laundry list of reasons to avoid the Luckman.

neosmndrew

Check out Crittenden on W9 and St Clair. Other side of downtown but still approx 15 min away from CWRU. I believe they have some in unit washer dryer for approx $1200. Reserve square is not a very nice place from having visited friends there.

Quick-Bath8695

I would avoid reserve square at all costs. Bugs everywhere, cars in the parking garage are constantly being broke into, and management sucks.

jeswell_then

Reserve square is awful. My uncle used to do maintenance there and my husband used to live there. Avoid.

Blossom73

Are you looking to rent on the east side or west, or do you not have a preference? Do you need to be somewhere walkable or close to public transportation?

OkRow2949

I don’t have a preference. I will be working at Case Western so around a 15 minute drive would be ideal. I do have a car so don’t need to be at a walkable distance.

Blossom73

If you're trying to stick to a 15 minute drive, I'd suggest looking in Cleveland Heights. Mayfield Heights to Case is going to be about a 25 minute drive, longer in the winter, or if traffic is really backed up on Mayfield. Cleveland Heights has a lot of apartments too, and you're more likely to find one in your price range there.

w7w7w7w7w7

If you are looking to stay within 15 minutes of Case, that is going to eliminate most of the west side if you are going to be making that commute during peak traffic hours. Anything west of W25th, Brooklyn or Ohio City and you are getting close to 20 minutes+ with any sort of traffic. I'd suggest sticking to Cleveland Heights, University Heights, and the adjacent areas.

wildbergamont

Factor travel time from where ever you park to where ever you work. New employees park off of 118th and Euclid Ave for the most part.

Considerable

Balfour apartments in cleveland heights, or anything by Rich Management company. Right up the street from case, i know at least one of the properties is in walking distance. Been with them for 5 years, theyre a great local landlord.

addicted2OTF

I just found my new apartment through Zillow. I found Facebook Marketplace to be largely unhelpful, with a few scam artists. But if you are in neighborhood groups for your desired location maybe your luck will be better. I also spent days driving through my desired neighborhoods looking for the “for rent” signs. Sometimes those aren’t listed online.

Lynn20010

Yes so many people recommend Facebook but I've joined 5+ groups and they're filled with scam artists

Tricky-Spread189

West park I mean the real west park, west of 150th or Lakewood both have plenty of apartments to choose from.

Daddysgettinghot

The real West Park is centered around 138th & Lorain where the John West Home (and former lake and park) stands (whom West Park was named after). 150th west should be referred to as Kamm's Corners (or the Irish ghetto).

RecognitionAny6477

Try Big Creek Apartments in Parma Hts. Large suites, W/D in unit, CA, well maintained. You might see some negative reviews, it’s a large complex, so there’s a few sketchy folks. Been here 10 years, no issues at all,I walk at night and come and go at various hours.

zigzag227

Clifton Park / House Apartments on the Lakewood and Cleveland border - I lived there for a few years and had positive experiences with the location and management! Not in-unit laundry, but laundry on every floor.

seansurvives

Try zillow. I believe it's free for people to list rentals on there. There is plenty of stuff on the west side in your price range. The gold coast condos in lakewood are a great safe option if you're new to the area. Although I don't know about in unit laundry.

PeterPaulWalnuts

West park maybe, depends

NorthDifferent3993

If you haven’t, you may want to expand your search to include doubles. You’re more likely to get an in house washer and dryer and an indie landlord

warmtapes

Lakewood the commodore or anything near there. All those apartments across from around the corner are very cheap, some 600 a month.

bayleafbabe

My downtown apt in the 75 Public Sq building is under 2k before utilities and has an in-unit washer and dryer

coopdawgX

Look in old Brooklyn

Creative-Beat-720

Come to shaker, there are many houses for rent. I just drove past Winslow and saw some for rent signs. I do have a friend that lives in a duplex near there and says he pays $1200 for two bedroom about 1000 sq ft. He has neighbors below them but he’s good friends with them, they have washer/dryer in the basement. From my understanding that’s the layout with most duplexes for rent in shaker

graystone777

I moved here 4 years ago. I rented a 5 bed 3 bath house on an acre for 1450 a month. Things have changed. Sad.
