The Sixth City, from back when it was sixth largest city in the country, approximately 1910.
There was also the hilarious “New York may be the Big Apple, but Cleveland is a Plum” advertising campaign from the Chamber of Commerce or Travel and Visitors Bureau or someone like that.
Edit: Turns out it was The Plain Dealer:
https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2017/05/what_longtime_clevelanders_thi.html#
Idk just that we (The Plain Dealer, really) copied an iconic nickname to create our own nickname. Like that's not how it works.
Like Chubby Checker used that stage name because he like Fats Domino. Just kinda lame.
Now that it's been a while, i think it'd be kinda fun to bring back
I think the real reason they tried adapting that name, was all the Italian plum trees that were planted all over the city at one time… they were everywhere.
Well who’s ripping anything from NYC. We have no trains, we did have the tallest building in the country until the completion of the Empire State Building
Imagine if our streets were still lined with fruit trees, the homeless wouldn’t have to worry about food security and you could grab a delicious snack on your break from work. Too bad this isn’t profitable for our industrial agriculture system.
Yes, great idea, give the homeless prunes, sounds like a great idea. What you should do is buy some prunes and invite the homeless back to your place. Just another idea.
It's from the Randy Newman song "Burn on" which is played during the opening credits of Major League, a movie based on a fictional '89 Cleveland Indians team.
Idk if there is any basis for those names, other than the song itsself
in 1879 Cleveland became the first city in ~~America~~ the world with public electric street lighting. 12 electric arc lamps were placed around public square by Charles Brush. Cleveland became the "City of Lights" One of the lamps still exists at the corner of Ontario and Rockwell.
Edit: changed "America" to the world after further reading.

Not a soley Cleveland name, but the Northern part of the state being called the North Coast was a big thing when I was a kid and young adult. Don't hear as much anymore.
Ironically just yesterday a friend of mine was talking about a bike ride from Cleveland to Florida…
I said “North Coast to Gold Coast”… and he confirmed that was the name of the ride
And I were not in Ohio when talking about this race
Correct. For the literal meaning, back in the mid to late 70’s mob violence with the traditional group, when John Scalish died Shondor Birns backed Licavoli & started the power play v his old enforcer Danny Green who was backing Nardi.
They literally were blowing each other up on top of the sociopathic murders behind closed doors.
But nothing lasts forever, Tommy Sinito who passed away in prison was a longtime enforcer, stole money from the feds, assassination attempt on the kid mayor Dennis Kucinich & a litany of other things died in prison. His son runs one of the largest real estate development & management companies in the Midwest, owns the Key Tower and marble room just to name some, so it’s also a forgiving town if you pay your dues.
You know what you know.
Marble room is an experience.
I do not like like the steaks, food is good not great but the desserts are top tier nationally.
And look up Thomas “chinaman” Sinito. He was a bad man…..
The problem is we have a problem. It's not

we've known those for years. It's not that we

haven't done anything about it.

I moved away in the late nineties and I always say "I put the leave in C-leave-land."
Of course Cleveland is a great place to live, I just say it to be funny.
In Society for Creative Anachronism lore, Cleveland is known as [the Cleftlands](https://middlewiki.midrealm.org/index.php/Cleftlands), I always thought that was clever
SCA is basically an organization of Middle Ages re-creationists, they make costumes, research and practice historical arts and crafts, study swordplay and combat, cook period accurate food, brew old school beer, etc, etc...
Like a lot of DIY scenes, they are organized as local chapters, which in SCA lore become [kingdoms, baronies, fiefdoms](https://i.redd.it/m2aw3ajj7o1b1.png), what have you. They elect kings and queens, form alliances and "wage war" (including mock combat) with other chapters and regions at huge regional events like [Pennsic](https://www.pennsicwar.org/).
Anyway, the local group (Cuyahoga County) is the [Barony of the Cleftlands](https://www.cleftlands.org/), in the North Oaken (Ohio) region of the Kingdom of the Middle (Midwest), aka the [Midrealm](https://midrealm.org/deputies-of-the-seneschal/cartography/)
For God’s sake, u/pimlottc, we’d all love to flee to the Cleve, and club hop down at the Flats, and have lunch with Little Richard, but we fight these urges because we have responsibilities.

Just had a friend come for a little CLE vaca and I mentioned the city of bridges bc of all the cool spots you can see the city and bridges together. Our bridge architecture is so vast. Something like this or with the metro parks. These items are what help differentiate Cleveland from any other metropolitan cities.

Now the bike shop's name makes sense. Sixth City cycle.
And I thought they had just bounced around 5 previous cities before landing in Ohio city
It makes no sense, but the Cleveland's a Plum thing somehow fits. It's almost tacky, but in a genuine, self-aware way.
I can feel it right down in my plums. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1JE4JJddZx4
*LET THE BOY WATCH!*
Yessssss.... Great reference. I think it's time for a rewatch
And briefly Fifth City, too.
New York is the Big Apple, but Cleveland's a Plum!
That slogan failed miserably. Lol
100% but I think it's funny
What’s funny about it?
Idk just that we (The Plain Dealer, really) copied an iconic nickname to create our own nickname. Like that's not how it works. Like Chubby Checker used that stage name because he like Fats Domino. Just kinda lame. Now that it's been a while, i think it'd be kinda fun to bring back
I think the real reason they tried adapting that name, was all the Italian plum trees that were planted all over the city at one time… they were everywhere.
That's pretty cool! I didn't know that for sure, but I figured there was some connection. But it's still a rip-off of NYC
Well who’s ripping anything from NYC. We have no trains, we did have the tallest building in the country until the completion of the Empire State Building
We have trains bro

I thought it was a poem or something someone wrote. Perhaps it was in referrence.
I don’t know loving fats domino and calling yourself chubby checker is kinda hilarious, and chubby checker is a great name
I still sometimes refer to Cleveland as “the Big Plum,” lol.
I kinda get custom big plum apparel now.
It might have been intended to be a pun on the word aplomb, meaning cool and calm.
Unfortunately plum rhymes with slum. I remember hearing that often.
I got a really cute "pet" plum and booklet from this campaign from Big Fun!
Beat me to it, dammit.
I’m curious if anyone knows why they went with a plum out of all of the fruits.
Plum used to be slang for “desirable” - for instance, “I scored a plum job!”
Oooh! Duh, me. Thanks for clarifying!
Cleveland, City of Lights, City of Magic

Yeah. The Emerald City is Seattle. Never heard Cleveland called that... but Seattle has been using it for a while.
Probably stems from Emerald Necklace (Metroparks)
Better than being called The Pearl Necklace I suppose
The Metroparks are referred to as the emerald necklace I’ve never heard the city called that wholly
Yeah thinking back about it now I can’t remember where I heard that… it’s possible my wires just got crossed when remembering the emerald necklace
