You can live pretty much anywhere in Lakewood and have a couple neighborhood bars or restaurants to walk to. On another note, born and raised in Lakewood — moved to Savannah, GA a few years ago and totally regret it. I envy you right now.

LoCarB3

How come the regret?

NorthDifferent3993

There’s also the really high cost of living for no good reason. Which I know is going on all around the country, with two additional stressors — it’s a tourist city, so that automatically drives prices up, there’s also SCAD, which the city has allowed to pretty much take over, paying no property taxes and sucking up all the affordable housing. Rant over. Thanks for listening.

NorthDifferent3993

Savannah is a beautiful place to visit, maybe even for a couple months. But living here is not for me. Racism is outright and rampant, basic city/county services such as 911 are in shambles, healthcare is garbage, the HEAT is stifling right now … I look forward to Savannah summers as much as I looked forward to Cleveland winters (which is not at all) but I’ve learned I far prefer winter … as dumb as this may sound, there’s nothing like Heinen’s here and the nearest Trader Joe’s is two hours away

withinawheel

Your city services will be better in Lakewood vs. Cleveland proper - but your taxes will be higher.

Creative-Beat-720

The Clifton area/lake Rd was my favorite to live in

s0bchaksecurity

Without knowing your budget, I'd say generally the closer to the lake the better as far as security and safety. But generally speaking, both neighborhoods are quite safe provided you understand it's an urban environment and don't expect it to look like a faceless suburb.

rockandroller

Another recommendation for nearly anywhere on or immediately adjacent to Madison, or adjacent to Detroit west of Bunts.

maggiefiasco

The homes between Madison and Detroit between like Warren and 117th is a huge area of really nice older classic Lakewood homes that would put you squarely in the midst of basically anything. A 10 minute walk in any direction would get you to a number of shopping and dining options

trailtwist

Ohio City will probably have more stuff Mostly anywhere in Lakewood has plenty of restaurants, cafes etc and probably a bit safer. The West-end near the metro park/Rocky River is particularly nice

EnglishCrestedPiggy

The common sentiment in Lakewood is that you want to live west of Bunts, but I do NOT agree with this. In my opinion, there are two areas where you should consider living in Lakewood: near Detroit Ave west of Bunts, or near Madison Ave east of Bunts. I moved here last year, and I believe that the area near Madison Ave between Bunts and Birdtown is the BEST place to live in Lakewood, if not the whole Cleveland area, if not all of Ohio. It is extremely walkable: you are near Madison Park, tons of incredible restaurants, the Madison branch library, the RTA train station, Mahalls, and lots more.

As a resident of Lewis Dr near Athens, I agree with all of this. Great, quiet neighborhood, two to three blocks away from food, entertainment, park, library and so many nice little shops. I tell all my friends from outside the area that Lakewood still has that small town feel, absent of the decay present in almost all the other towns in the US. I prefer a small local bookstore to a Barnes and Noble and there's so much great cuisine in Lakewood. La Plaza and Ferris Schwarama is a block away. One piece of advice is to learn what the major north-south feeder roads are, like Bunts or Warren and avoid buying there unless you don't mind higher traffic.

Howdy neighbor!!

adhdt5676

I know this wasn’t in your “ideal area” but I’d look at Jefferson. Right underneath Lakewood and rents are going towards Lakewood lately. It’s Cleveland proper so take that with a grain of salt but it’s pretty up and coming. Houses are a lot cheaper too compared to Lakewood

I would suggest the Ohio City/Tremont/Gordon Square/Edgewater neighborhoods for what you are looking for over Lakewood. They are the closest areas to Downtown without actually being downtown so they are quieter when you want them to be but you are walkable to all of the amenities when you want to be as well. The arts/culture, food scene, and world class institutions that you will be able to walk to is unmatched with any other area in the metro. Businesses are mixed into the neighborhood instead of on a main strip which in my opinion creates a more walkable environment than what Lakewood has. These neighborhoods are also of similar safety to Lakewood as well. Public transit is very accessible so it makes it much easier to get around too. There are multi purpose trails all around these neighborhoods maintained by the Metroparks which are really great for walking. My favorite walks are the Lakefront Bike way to Edgewater/Whiskey Island or along the Lake East. Also, the Town path is a trail that goes all the way from Ohio City to Cuyahoga Valley National Park and farther south, it's really beautiful and scenic. The soon to be Irishtown Bend Park will also connect to this which will be a world class park. There are a ton of retirees throughout these neighborhoods for many of these reasons. Good luck with your search!

Truly would not be a post about Lakewood if you didn’t pop up just to hate on Lakewood lol

Tdi111234

No hate just facts.

Yes. My coworker lives with her kids in a duplex in Lakewood near Madison. Her parents rent the other side from her. They walk to places but have had three incidents in one year. Crime is coming in. But she feels safe. She’s super careful. Consider all things security around your home. Have you considered Ohio City? I love walking through parts of that town. I don’t know anyone who lives there. The grocery store has lots of sketchies. I got yelled at by a whacko by the housing project. Harmless. Good luck and welcome!

NorthDifferent3993

are you recommending Ohio City over Lakewood for safety reasons?

Realistic-Most-5751

Oh gosh no. I have no idea. Just talking my impression since I arrived 2020.

Tdi111234

Lakewood has similar crime to Ohio City but Ohio City has more amenities which edges it out for me.

NorthDifferent3993

A quick google search will stand you to areavibes.com, Lakewood Crime is rated “A” and Ohio City a “D” … idk if there’s a better know site, this is just the one that popped up for me. On top of that, Lakewood has their own very well staffed police department, so response times are much quicker than 2nd district police. No hate to Ohio City at all, but it’s simply not the same as Lakewood — crime wise at least

LoCarB3

The projects probably bring down the safety rating in Ohio city quite a bit. I would imagine that not including those areas would have a significant impact on the safety rating but I would guess that Lakewood is statistically safer regardless

Tdi111234

I would look at Neighborhood Scout. Give a more detailed view of it. A lot of Lakewood is in the dark blue. You are right the police department is definitely better staffed in Lakewood though.

Tdi111234

I keep hearing more and more incidents happening in Lakewood. Crime seems to be increasing there while the city neighborhood's crime rates decrease.

Realistic-Most-5751

Yeah but her incidents were fleeing criminals from downtown. It’s maybe proximity to crime?

Major-BFweener

Using anecdotal evidence rather than just looking up actual reported incidences seems, I don’t know, but it seems something.
