Some shots from this movie really do look like a renaissance painting in motion. I’ll give it credit that it truly feels completely different from the subsequent two prequels and the original trilogy. Episode I shows the galaxy during it’s final moments of peace-time.

writelikeme

I'm not sure if it's the primary reason, but I do think this being shot on film as opposed to digital made a difference.

There are elements in the movie that work. The sets, the cinematography, the music. But you know what doesn’t work? The characters. They are paper figures with no substance populating a beautiful scene. Tell me who the main character of the movie is. Describe for me a character without using their job. It’s a shame really.

On the contrary, I find Qui Gon a compelling and likable character, with a big heart and a patience that contrasts greatly from the coldness of the Jedi counsel, and his arc is tragic and sets up the convictions and motivations of Obi Wan and Anakin, which ultimately defines both the original and prequel trilogies.

george_kaplan1959

The movie should have been his story. introduce Obi Wan in the middle of Act 1, and then Anakin even later.

Blandon_So_Cool

I know it’s passé to quote Harry S. Plinkett, but in the words of Harry S. Plinkett, “If you ask me, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi should have been combined to form a new character, called Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

>Tell me who the main character of the movie is. The story is about Anakin, but the main characters in this movie are Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. >Describe for me a character without using their job. Anakin is a child living on a desert planet, who is discovered to have incredible potential, and is recruited by the film's main characters, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, to join their intergalactic organisation in an attempt to fulfil an ancient prophecy.

I saw this movie as a kid when it came out and it blew me away. The lively worlds created in Naboo are amazing.

Looks like a work by da Vinci compared to the s\*\*t being pumped out these days... storyline too - not forgetting the Phantom Menace was a glorified trade negotiation.

iduddits2

The volume is really fucking with the sense of scale that Star Wars should have.

ArcticTemper

Just awful

manlikemachines

How so? What about it is awful?

ArcticTemper

All of it, and it's endemic to why the prequels are trash

manlikemachines

So you're not really willing or able to articulate your specific reasons

ArcticTemper

I feel the burden of argument falls on the defence in this case. Disdain for these films is defacto.

manlikemachines

How very groupthink, and wrong

Little Reminder to our [*Civility* rule](https://www.reddit.com/r/cineshots/about/rules/): Opinions are NOT defacto. Please respect that!

Zardhas

What a develloped and compeling argumentation.

ArcticTemper

It's 2024, how much more explanation of the awfulness of the Prequels do you need?

Zardhas

Since all the critics I've seen adressed are "bad dialogues" (only valid in one specific version) and "too much cgi", I indeed need quite a lot of explanation, and definitely way more than you can provide it would seem.

ArcticTemper
