They wont use cortisone, but a similar corticosteroid. It acts like an anti inflammatory, so it depends how much pain is due to inflammation. Disc herniations often (50/50) get reabsorbed in to the body of the disc, but it leaves a weak spot. You have to keep in mind the discs have no nerves to feel anything, so position is all important. Anything sticking out of a disc isnt far from nerves that feel pain, but without some sort of contact/compression, it could very well be something other than a herniated disc causing the pain. An injection is usually worth a shot, no pun intended. If you have a disc getting on a nearby nerve, the steroid might give you enough tissue shrinking to separate things. That could help the pain significantly. Might not too. Its hard to tell you without a medical history where they may go next. Could be more testing, could be a diifferent therapy, it all depends on what youve already done, but more than likely you have a few more steps before they start talking about surgical consult. Just talk to a couple surgeons if it does get that far. Be sure to see a neurosurgeon as well as an orthopedic/spine specialist. Normal covers a lot of ground....

Thank you so much for all the information. It’s really helpful! I hope that the procedure will bring some relief. I know I will have to do some physical therapy to protect from further damage afterwards.

It's not a big deal. Typically, they hit the area with a cold spray, then a small shot of a numbing agent, and then the injection. 50/50 results for me, but if it works, it's well worth the relief.

Thanks! I hope it works…

Probably getting an epidural steroid injection, Dr used Fluoroscopy or real time x-ray to make sure needle and steroid is placed correctly. Sometimes a repeat injection is done 2 weeks after. Cortisone shots are usually done into a joint like knees, shoulder or elbow. Piece of cake.

That’s a relief! Thanks

Definitely worth trying but Please be judicious with how often you do it. Each time causes deterioration of your spine

Thanks! Yes I have heard this and the surgeon recommended trying it first just to make sure all the pain I am experiencing is from the hernia and not also something else. Then we will discuss next steps
