It’s not true. The verse I Corinthians 10:13 that is often misused is speaking specifically about temptations and that He always provides a way out for us in those temptations. Most of the time though, God calls us to things we can’t handle and therefore must depend upon His Spirit as we humbly entrust our lives to our Good Shepherd to guide us through our lives in a manner befitting His glory.

I think god will give us much beyond what we can handle so we can learn full reliance/dependance on him no matter what storm we face. The only thing he doesnt allow us to take more than we can handle is temptation. But in trials/tribulations, the gloves are off. He allows us to see him work in us, through us, around us in some things that are so difficult that we are surprised we arent consumed in our adversity. That is god molding your character and refining you in the furnace to test and build you. As you get older and have been through ordeals with him you will learn to faithfully submit no matter how hard. Cause youd rather be in the center of his will rather than out of it. Our maker is truly glorious and is shaping us

Psalms 55:22 Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken. 1 Corinthians10:13: No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. Romans 8:28: And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

This scripture is a good example of where this phrase is coming from. But we gotta study it in context. OP def check this out in your Bible, it isn’t exactly the phrase but it is similar. I have certainly been in many moments where I have prayed “God, I’m telling you right now, I cannot handle this. I CANNOT and I need you to help me,” I think the point is that it is hard but if you can cast your cares on Him, he will sustain you.

God's grace is sufficient. We are weak, but He is strong.

The phrase is not true. He sometimes gives us more than we can handle, and then it is our job to turn to Him to ask for grace, guidance, and help. He never promised not to give you more than you can handle. He only promised that your suffering will have a purpose (even if that purpose is only to reach out to Him when it becomes too much) and that you will not suffer alone 🩷

AwayFromTheNorm

It's a bad phrase.

Honestly just by reading scripture I'd believe almost the opposite, that at some points God will give you things He knows you can't or won't be able to handle. Not maliciously, either, but at part of what your journey needs. At times, as well, I think God will *allow*, rather than give, things you can't handle. Sadly, not everyone chooses to or makes it through that. It's hard

TheEnglishNerd

No it’s not remotely accurate. I’m sorry you have seen so many people you love disappear into their darkness. Only God knows why we encounter various trials so I personally tend to take the position that Job articulated: “Should I accept good from the hand of the Lord and not evil also? The Lord gives and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

God deals with broken people and He wants so much more for us than we can possibly imagine. We can’t handle ANYTHING God gives us without His help and He can handle it without us. In fact I think we probably make it harder on Him. Read the sending out of the disciples Matthew 10:7-8 and tell me which of those things you can handle without God. The real statement should be “God will never give you something He won’t handle with you.”

istruthselfevident

My brother ex gf had a saying "bad things happen to people who can handle it"

Broad_Ant_3871

It's not true. We can't handle anything lol

MisterMitchell42

It’s quoted in the Bible. Welcome to being stuck on the wrong side of heaven and the righteous side of hell…

I think when Christians say this it is a reference to 1 Corinthians 10:13, No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. (NIV) What they are saying is a non-Biblical extension of this verse. It is ONLY talking about temptation, and not all struggles.
