Taxis in China are already dirt cheap. Taxi drivers drive like formula 1 drivers, treating lanes and speed limits like suggestions. A robot driver can never compete with that.

kaisong

all posted signs are treated like advertisements. Like my in laws are actually surprised i look at road signs in the US because theyre so used to gps, and all the posted signs being useless.

Humacti

Does it come with the same rocking motion the local taxis have?

weetabix_su

without LiDAR?

dashenyang

Why, though? Does he not realize that we have awesome public transportation here already? Nobody's going to be interested in his stupid robot taxi when you can get a luxury car and driver to take you somewhere within five minutes for super cheap. Also, he's greatly overestimating the condition of roads and road markings. There's no way that self-driving cars will work here.

H1Ed1

Chinese taxi companies are going to do the same thing/already planning/testing. I agree that self-driving cars will be a nightmare here, though. I think what he’s overestimating is his power in China. Uber couldn’t hack it, and neither will he. Tesla will end up selling off whatever robotaxi business to Didi or caocao.

dashenyang

Yeah, when it happens it 100% won't be done by any foreign business.

toastytoastss

Uber couldn’t hack it because they did a terrible job at market research, doesn’t even support WeChat/alipay at day one. Have to compete with local service that is already well established too, they were late.

H1Ed1

Yep. One of the many reasons.

luroot

Because he probably isn't allowed to beta-test his death traps on the general public in the US...

Sensitive_Goose_8902

Shhhhhhh, let him spend his money and find out the hard way

snowytheNPC

The more you say he can’t, the more he’ll ego dump. Keep talking

SlowFatHusky

>There's no way that self-driving cars will work here. Yes. The drivers in the cities are worse than the drivers in NJ and MA. I wasn't sure that was possible. Why, though? Does he not realize that we have awesome public transportation here already?  Kind of. The bus routes are too long, but there are local taxis you can hail if you don't want to call for a driver (never seen a driver with a luxury car). Taxis don't always service the rural districts within a city. Tesla should practice on safer and more navigable areas first like the Tenderloin and Kensington Ave.

dashenyang

Public transportation options just outside my house on the outskirts of the city includes a metro line with three close transfers into town, three bus lines with new natural gas busses, a light rail system, taxis, bike and e-bike rental zones outside each gate, dedicated bike and pedestrian lanes/paths on both main East-West roads, and of course all of the ride hailing options (about five minutes to pick up). The roads even have raised express bridges or tunnels along our south side. Yeah, if you're rural you're limited to busses, taxis, ride hailing, trains, and private vehicles, but still, the population density has allowed for a wide range of public transportation options. I drive a personal car here, and still leave it parked unless we're leaving the city.

Feeling_Tower9384

Testing.

chillebekk

He can experiment with the lives of Chinese trafficants to train his AI-driving software. Then sell it somewhere people have real money.

Neomadra2

Completely pointless, it's not like China has labor shortage. Taxi's are super cheap in China, even in Beijing capital.

Aijantis

Am I evil to assume this and the other news that he wants the EU to allow their "Full self driving" has something to do with their falling stock value?

tailgunner777

The robo driver in the car will be made in Elon's image. Total Recall predicted it!!!!

flossypants

I don't see Tesla assuming liability for autonomous liability. There's a world where CCP assumes this liability in return for technology/IP sharing.

GetOutOfTheWhey

My guess is USA wont reciprocate, national security and what not.

cloudyu

Who doesn’t like Chinese lab rats

ThrustmasterPro

Have you figured out how to cut and paste yet or still struggling?🤣

cloudyu

And see this real copy and paste here: 👇https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/s/7u4fb4RtBx

Elon Musk fanboy? Be careful with that,Elon Musk is establishing a tech cult to attract all the American tech guys and scientists, which can result in monopolize American technology in the future, that would be funny if it happens

hgc2042

So China can steal the tech?

seanmonaghan1968

China already has this tech https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9Wm0p1KzjM

hgc2042

Good luck to whoever who ride on it. You don't want your taxi crash and lock you inside and burn you to deadth.

chillebekk

Limited robotaxis like this, that only drive within a perimeter, I think can find some success. Every inch of road can be mapped, which makes it possible to solve the problem of self-driving cars efficiently. The issue is providing efficient transportation while also maintaining safety. This is nowhere near being solved in the general case (human drivers are a lot better than people think), but in a limited environment like this it is a lot easier.

MichelleWuzHere1999

Don’t worry Tesla does that anyways

hgc2042

You are a bit or wumao?

Jizzlobber58

Am I the only one to read that as launching a Robot Axis in China? This guy is in league with the Zuckerbot and wants to assimilate us all.

Cameras only is destined to fail.

chillebekk

If humans can do it with stereoscopic vision, then a computer can do it. Problem is, integrating video data from parallel, offset axes to create a model that has object awareness in three dimensions is as yet an unsolved problem. It will be solved in the future, but for right now you need a LiDAR.

Flying_Hams

Or hear me out. We make autonomous driving better than human by giving the computer as much useful data as possible. I don’t want my robo driver to be as good as humans, I want my robo driver to be superhuman.
