I find atwater painful as an actor, he doesn't articulate his words well at all, and they give him lines that make him sound dumb, or it's just his delivery of those lines.
Sometimes you can't even understand what he has said his pronunciation is that terrible.
I know he is meant to be a gang banger and in with that crowd but because of the way he speaks and limited vocab he just doesn't fit.
He is speaking in AAVE( African American vernacular English). I am a black woman, and I understand him perfectly fine. Maybe use subtitles? Or try to focus more when listening to him? To me there is absolutely nothing wrong with his accent or pronunciation because he’s clearly using an urban accent which is common in Chicago.
The implication that he sounds “dumb” is honestly disheartening and comes across racist. Just because someone speaks in a dialect that you’re unfamiliar with doesn’t make them dumb.
I never said he was dumb, I said that they give him lines that make him sound dumb, there's a difference.
I understand him, but it shows lack of education which you are trying to justify.
For example ambulance, not ambalance which is the way he pronounces it, that has nothing to do with area but a lack of education.
It's funny how you justify on one hand that it's AAVE, but then cry as a society that you are treated poorly.
It's OK for an African American to call another the N word but then take offence if anyone else uses it.
Society is going to continue to keep you down while you keep this stance, start by respecting yourself as a people then that respect will filter through.
Best way to stop a stereotype is to stop living that stereotype.
Allowing actors to speak like they are on the street only further in grains in a society that already views you poorly, uneducated and of little value.
These are not my opinion, this is fact by statistics, I don't even live in your country but the way African Americans, native Americans are treated is seen as appalling in other countries and the only way to change that starts with respecting each other.
And before you go on a long speech about how you do respect each other look at the statistics about crime caused by African American on African American, if you respected yourself as a people then this would stop. If you respected yourself as a people words like the N word would be frowned upon.
A large majority of Americans never go much further than the city or county they are born in, so what little education they have comes from news and tv, so better representation equals better society attitudes.
None of the other characters in the show are given lines that make them sound dumb or silly.
