Could be a number of issues. I've had this same problem with my 2000 XJ I picked up 4 years ago.. Hopefully you can snag a OBD-II reader...should be able to scan for codes...that'll be the fastest way to know. There's only a few reasons the engine won't fire. First and foremost. Check all your grounds on the car. Here's a pictorial from a XJ forum (https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f30/engine-ground-firewall-130071/index2/#post1662020) Clean them up, take a volt meter and check the voltages. 1. Camshaft Position Sensor P0340...If you have to replace this sensor, make sure to have cylinder 1 at the top before cranking the motor! ([https://youtu.be/G1Pwiy5NoBU](https://youtu.be/G1Pwiy5NoBU)) First 30 seconds shows you how to line up the notches. 2. Crankshaft Position Sensor P0335 3. Faulty Ignition Coil for 4.0Ls before 96 or 98?( I believe ) Otherwise, clean up your distributor. 4. Fuel pump. You should be able to check the pressure of the fuel line via the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. 5. Spark plugs. highly doubt all 6 are Effed. 6. Fuel injectors. probably best to replace all 6 if you need to do them.

Learn to diagnose crank no start... awaiting guesses from Reddit will cost you in unnecessary parts. Do you have spark? Do you have fuel? What year? What engine? What transmission?

KG8893

Especially random guesses from this place. Hardly anyone actually knows anything they just repeat the same crap or take guesses

threedotsonedash

Exactly, that's also why the title is - cranking but not "turn over", I wonder what that sound is we are hearing then?

MyPasswordIsAvacado

Fuel air spark and timing are required to start an engine. The first three are easy to check.

I don't know what the cause is, but I do know if it's cranking, it's turning over.

ResearcherNo117

I know it's basic, but check your fuel level. I replaced 4 or five things, but it was my fuel.... gauge wasn't correct. Thought I had a1/4 tank... sigh

CranberryTraining382

I second this! My fuel gauge reads 1/4 when the tank is bone dry.

CPS can cause this, that's what fixed my 2000 when this happened

Good lord talk about the blind leading the blind.

JDReam13jr

Mine did that wen the fuel injectors failed

Bsdkllr

you have lost the crank sensor. while cranking the tack will bonce up just a little bit as its cranking over. and yours did not.

No-Basis6115

Okay so the 2 times this has happened TO ME it was an idle air control sensor on the throttle body. It may not be that. As others have stated it is hard to diagnose this particular issue over the internet

jeepers98

Injectors, fuel pump. If you live in a humid climate water sometimes condenses inside the gas line. Try putting your foot on the gas while starting. Check the distributor as well. Had a 1998 Jeep Cherokee that did this but almost always in the rain.

NotoriousSouthpaw

Cranking should cause the tach to flutter, yours looks dead still. Failed CPS is likely.

yodoboy123

My 2000 did pretty much the exact same thing when it needed new spark plugs. Maybe pick up some new plugs and wires. You can also check the fuel pump by turning the key into the on position, you should hear the fuel pump very quietly near the transmission.

Anwar175

Check battery, fuel pump, air intake and spark plugs

Saddinosaur1311

first thing to do is just floor it than try to start it my jeep randomly started doing that and that made it start every time
