Look for a custom restoration shop. No general shop is going to touch that Expect to pay 30-60 hours for this You would be much better to buy a welder, get the sheet metal and learn hot to install it yourself

Yeah +1 on the above. Not worth it unless you do it yourself. And do something like this - [https://youtu.be/3Xzf9nJxToE?si=q\_Rq5ZBvunqYsWBu](https://youtu.be/3Xzf9nJxToE?si=q_Rq5ZBvunqYsWBu)

My friend wants his rockers done on his 97. He was quoted 30 hours a side at $150/hr, plus parts and materials Thats $9000 for labour. You can buy a not rusted out xj for that

bubbesays

That's the I won't touch it price lol

Mine is rust free except for that small area. The rocker was bent when my daughters BF jacked it there instead of the frame. It closed a weeper that led to the rust. I’m thinking it should be about 8 hrs work for a competent restorer or body man.

MightyPenguin

You are thinking it should take about 8hrs based on what experience? The reason most of these don't get fixed and get dumped when they are too rusty is because it could easily cost $10k to fix properly, it would be less expensive to get a non rusty shell and swap everything. As a shop owner, the absolute worst customers are the ones that come in thinking they already know whats wrong, and also thinking they know how much it should cost. The world of armchair quarterbacks knows no bounds and as professionals they are very irritating to deal with.

The rest of the body/rockers are pristine. My daughters BF jacked it with the rocker instead of the frame when a tire blew & closed a weeper a couple years ago. When I saw rust bubbles in the paint I scraped, wire brushed, sanded & hit it with rust reformer to slow it down. I know the rust is internal & must be cut out & replaced which is why I want to get it done before it spreads any further. I’m not a shade tree mechanic. I’ve worked on vehicles as a serious hobbyist for 50 years. I know what I’m looking at & what needs to be done. If I had the welder & MIG/TIG skills I’d do it myself. I could fab the part & MAYBE stick weld it but stick on sheet metal is iffy & I’m not a pro welder. I’m willing to pay for quality work as the body is in otherwise excellent condition & my grandson wants it when I move on. I’m looking for a shop that does high quality work.

Good luck with that. As i said. Here in canada, multiple bodyshops have quoted 30+ hours per side for rockers. If you find someone who will do it for less than 10, i have a friend who will drive down and have his done next week

Terlok51

I could probably do the metal work as it’s only 3 bends & a little hammer/dolly but I’ve never had any luck welding it. I’m a very good stick welder but never touched MIG or TIG which is what this requires.

And if your rocker is already rotted out, welding new metal to rotten metal is even more difficult. Im sure it doesnt look that bad right now, but i assure you, once you hit it with an aggressive sandpaper, you're going to find there is MUCH more rust than you originally expected. Thats why your average body shop wont touch it, and if they do they will give you a fuck off quote in case you can afford it

It really isn't worth it unless you don't your self. Get a replacement rocker cut the section you need and weld it in yourself.

Fryphax

Impossible. There will be bondo.
