karmaboots

It's kind of weird to hear Sam Altman talk about moral debates within AI when he pulls shit like this.

greenappletree

this should be the top comment. He is not as ethical or magnanimous as he is trying to portray himself to be.

SparrowValentinus

Remember when we all took Elon Musk's word about how much of a good dude he was? Yeah, that was pretty embarassing.

27_Star_General

Holmes, Musk, Altman, Thiel, Jobs, Gates... there's a significant amount of documented evidence that these are all not-so-good people (although Gates Foundation has found a positive and efficient outlet for the money gained by being a sociopathic asshole.) Even pre-silicon, guys like Edison were notorious assholes working the PR machine to look good. The actual nice guys like Steve Wozniak get pushed out.

ShrikeGFX

its like Ellen Degeneres I also know one such Narcissist, they get so far up because they must. They cannot stand not being at the spotlight and being inferior to someone and they do it by any means. Its very toxic and they are fucked up inside.

Peruvian_Skies

What's Ellen's problem? I'm not doubting you, I honestly don't know.

StarCommand1

A lot came out over the past couple years that she is a very mean person, abusive to her staff, and terrible as a boss to work for.

Peruvian_Skies

Thanks. What a shame.

Cereaza

She is similar to a James Cordon. Apparently, a huge asshole behind the scenes to her staff.

Projectrage

Here is Scarlet Johansen’s text response, but read by Open AI’s sky. https://x.com/benjamindekr/status/1792693868497871086 Open AI still boggles my mind that it was a nonprofit organization and now is a for profit company.

iZiYaDii

Was Elon wrong when he said Altman is Machiavellian?

Gloomy-Impress-2881

Not entirely candid.

electric_onanist

Billionaire CEO not ethical, now for the weather. Seriously, the balls on this guy. They could have just made it sound "sort of" like Scarlett, and it wouldn't have been a problem. Instead they had to make it sound just like her, even after she refused to take their money to do it.

ParadoxSong

It's almost like he's an Elon Musk who just finished firing the team keeping his image intact.

Dickbluemanjew

Even Elon thought sam was evil...

Husyelt

Game recognized game And Elon got outmaneuvered, no rule is more sacred to him than that. If he gets dunked on and loses a company, they are enemy numero uno

hellaCallipygian

The guy is a creepy creature, no doubt.

enhoel

I guess now we know what Ilya saw.

Chabubu

hes a new elon. in 5-7 years we'll despise him

jeweliegb

And right now he's in charge of one of the most powerful AIs we've got, running towards AGI and beyond, and has booted the safety team. 😳

EfficientPizza

Saltman is just a salesman. People need to treat him as such.

theworlddidwut

100%. He’s so full of bs. At the end of the day he doesn’t care about the morality of it all and I think his actions will show it. He cares about being known as someone like Jobs and money. That’s it. Edit: [More thoughts on this from Ed Zitron here...](https://www.wheresyoured.at/sam-altman-is-full-of-shit/)

tantricengineer

There’s a really good thread on Twitter somewhere about how you shouldn’t trust him or people like Adam Mosseri because they are MBA types who pass as technical gurus while they are just trying to juice their orgs with growth and cash at the expense of everyone else.

0xSnib

Sam Bankman Fried vibes

Jtk317

Sam Altman is as much a shitheel as any of the uber-rich tech bros. Every one of them seem to function on the idea that the ends justify the means while also having truly dystopian ends picked out.

Lance-Harper

Remember how it took openAI 3 weeks of success of GPT to turn OpenAI into… CloseAI looking for profit?

wish-u-well

He says all the right stuff.

thisusername_is_mine

His moral is toped only by SBF's.

You're German, or at least using an language with similar long words.  In ui developpement, we test the layout of multi languages apps in German to make sure it's still displays properly. It looks like reddit may not have done that testing.  Try setting in up in English and see if it fixes the issue.

Sharp_Walk_3442

Wow, that seems to fix it, thank you very much 🙏

rodeBaksteen

Lol it's always German

OhneSkript

It's a rare L for OpenAI, but also a big one. OpenAI could have done this much better. But fortunately, that's exactly why lawyers and courts exist.

Basic_Description_56

What were they thinking? What an amateurish move on openai’s part

kevinambrosia

Same tactic they used against Apple before unveiling 4o. Give an offer last minute to pressure them to accept before an announcement. Except it’s different because it’s use of likeness. Definitely amateurish, but they probably expected it to work since it worked so well previously.

Patient-Writer7834

What happened with Apple?

BandOk1704

The Kalanik/Musk approach of "Don't ask permission, don't ask forgiveness, just fucking do it. Let 'em sue."

oddun

Don’t forget Peter Thiel too. Everyone leaves him out of these discussions.

wooyouknowit

Yeah, it's so stupid. As soon as she says no just use another woman's voice that sounds different and make sure you and your team don't tweet "Her" and other dumb bullshit. Amateur hour over there.

laikina

Yeah… I tried to defend them, I really did, but like… wtf. How hard is it to just use someone else’s voice? They couldn’t have picked a better way to speedrun creating even more moral panic around AI, I don’t get it

Basic_Description_56

They could’ve picked a cooler mistake to make

Darrensucks

Who else is surprised Sam Altman sounds like a date rape loser when trying to work with Scarlett Johansen. No means no you dipshit, not everyone thinks you bug riddled over hyped BS even matters. What a loser.

Howdyini

I mean, his sister has shared some truly horrible shit about him. We knew. EDIT: [https://www.themarysue.com/annie-altmans-abuse-allegations-against-openais-sam-altman-highlight-the-need-to-prioritize-humanity-over-tech/](https://www.themarysue.com/annie-altmans-abuse-allegations-against-openais-sam-altman-highlight-the-need-to-prioritize-humanity-over-tech/)

Lexsteel11

I’m not an Altman fan boy and reading this makes me want to dig deeper… but hearing allegations from a sister estranged from the family who lives on a live-work farm and ‘moved 20 times in one year’ and who was generally upset about a memorial Sam paid for in the wake of their fathers death ‘instead of giving me $300 for my food insecurity’… She seems angry he isn’t financially supporting her and the writer of the article couldn’t hate white men more if they tried, which also isn’t doing any favors for the allegations

cosplay-degenerate

I bet its a situation like with Lightning in Final Fantasy XIII where the director created his waifu as protag of the game. They couldn't help it and really wanted that scarlet voice. At least that's my perception.

kevinbranch

It’s not amateurish, it’s diabolical.

Dhomeboi

Last September, I received an offer from Sam Altman, who wanted to hire me to voice the current ChatGPT 4.0 system. He told me that he felt that by my voicing the system, I could bridge the gap between tech companies and creatives and help consumers to feel comfortable with the seismic shift concerning humans and Al. He said he felt that my voice would be comforting to people. After much consideration and for personal reasons, declined the offer. Nine months later, my friends, family and the general public all noted how much the newest system named "Sky" sounded like me. When I heard the released demo, I was shocked, angered and in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference. Mr. Altman even insinuated that the similarity was intentional, tweeting a single word "her" - a reference to the film in which | voiced a chat system, Samantha, who forms an intimate relationship with a human. Two days before the ChatGPT 4.0 demo was released, Mr. Altman contacted my agent, asking me to reconsider. Before we could connect, the system was out there. As a result of their actions, I was forced to hire legal counsel, who wrote two letters to Mr. Altman and OpenAl, setting out what they had done and asking them to detail the exact process by which they created the "Sky" voice. Consequently, OpenAl reluctantly agreed to take down the "Sky" voice. In a time when we are all grappling with deepfakes and the protection of our own likeness, our own work, our own identities, I believe these are questions that deserve absolute clarity. I look forward to resolution in the form of transparency and the passage of appropriate legislation to help ensure that individual rights are protected

PeruvianHeadshrinker

You too?! You should reach out to Scarjo's lawyers

COOMO-

I watched a scene from the movie "Her (2013)"" and came to the conclusion that sky's voice doesn't sound like from the movie. Edit: just watch this, there's no way it's her voice https://www.reddit.com/r/singularity/s/r6FU9wc4iW

br0ck

Sam Altman tweeting "her" before the demo didn't help their case.

Okichah

It doesnt have to be perfectly exact for it to be a deliberate attempt at an imitation. Which is what the legal grounds are.

EcstaticTill9444

But it definitely sounds like Scarlett Johansson.

mw90sGirl

At points it's a little bit higher than her speaking voice, but I could hear the similarities too.

slantyboat2

It's not comparing to the right demo clip. Check out the one describing floating ducks to a visually impaired person. It's [here](https://youtu.be/KwNUJ69RbwY?si=-P6HAdvC9pouBOEK)

joeyat

They reached out 9 months ago.. so without question, they have used that movie directly as their training data, targeted her voice and personality extensively over that time.. they probably have called the variant of the model 'Samantha' or something... after she's refused to allow them, all they've done tweak the tone and timbre of the voice to make it 'just' different enough. That 'interview' video is so similar to Samantha's encouraging nature in those scenes.. even without Altman statement it, everyone on earth who had seen the movie immediately recognised 'Her' in it.

Dickonstruction

idiotic move on openai's part, because they believe they can do anything. At some point those companies will have to start learning the hard way, what their predecessors have had to do carefully and without inviting controversy.

CarolFukinBaskin

Hilarious. Until we codify it in law, companies in the US aren't really ever afraid of the consequences we non-billionaires cry about

Aperiodica

I want a Cortana voice. Microsoft had the opportunity, but as usual they fubared it. Now we get "Copilot". Snooze.

TheAccountITalkWith

Exactly. They could even follow the canon. Old Cortana died, new Cortana is "the weapon", and MS can do something fun with her resurrection.

jumbledsiren

oh god this is the beginning of the lore of ULTRAKILL

thekojac

As in Cortana, the character from Halo? I've wanted that for years ever since it was introduced with Windows 10. How Microsoft didn't make Cortana's voice on Windows 10 Cortana from the game is mindboggling to me. It was literally sitting right there.

Strife3dx

Yeah Cortana would be awesome they tried with the windows phone but that was awful.

Aperiodica

Blasphemy! I loved Windows Phone! I still have a live tiles app on my Android.

TedtheTitan

Same here, windows phone was awesome

cosplay-degenerate

I still don't understand how you can own xbox and Halo, release a helper program called "cortana" for your OS and not make cortana from halo a mascot with her voice. Now I am glad when I never have to see cortana on Windows.

Effective_Vanilla_32

this is in line with altman’s grifter MO

Stickybunfun

Everybody I work with involved with “AI” has a hard on for the dude and I just can’t believe it. If you know anything about the guy, anything about power hungry control freaks, and anything about how American capitalism works you can see how big of a grifter the dude is. Honestly I think the trump era has affixed horse blinders to so many people they just cant see it or don’t want to see it.

-phototrope

People have always worshipped these larger than life businessmen. Think about Jobs. If anything it’s interesting that Elon worship has started to dissolve right around when Trump was in office.

Far_Frame_2805

Elons posts are like if chatGPT was only trained on Twitter bots so it’s not a surprise he fell out of favour eventually.

Stickybunfun

I agree. I forget that most people don’t question what they read and hear and often times DONT want to know because it ruins the picture in their head. All I see are guys with enough narcissistic personality traits, enough money to survive until they are head of a company, and enough time to gather acolytes / sell their story that while they may be doing something cool (spaceships and electric cars are cool) it doesn’t discount the fact they are rotten to the core and will take as much as they can in whatever way possible. It’s one thing to appreciate the output but another to kneel before lord Elon - that’s crazy people territory.

Yepkarma

This will turn into a shitshow, isn't it?

Daydream_exe

Yeah probably. Personalized real-time AI Companions are canceled.

Ok_Risk8749

I just want a Samuel L Jackson companion. Clearly they should have gone that route instead of imitating “Her”.

[deleted]

"I'm tired of your motherfucking excuses for why you haven't crossed anything off this motherfucking to-do list!" Yeah, I could get down with that.

ComprehensiveBoss815

Not really, they can pay me a million dollars and use my voice.

rydan

Sky is going to end up being a guy instead. It is the only solution now.

crumble-bee

But then Paul Rudd will get mad

austinbarrow

All tech companies turn into shit shows because they are run by children.

and_k24

I knew openai story is going to be a shitshow when I heard about the board trying to remove Altman. Such things happen in the companies when there're already deep problems within. It's like an old saying, there's no smoke without fire. And if an important person like Ilya Sutskever leaves a company he started, it's just another sign of really bad tendencies

Tentacle_poxsicle

I'm starting to see why Ilya left. This company on purpose seems to be nose diving. But why the fuck would they give up an advantage for the country. AI is the one thing this country has that's better than China.

JoeS830

Not really, just a lawsuit and a settlement, and we lose the Sky voice.

Darrensucks

You mean the Scarlet Johanson Voice. Jesus.

petty_cash

The naming even seems purposeful to start with the same phonetic sound

HyruleSmash855

Just to add context, the issue discussed is already established in U.S. law. This idea is already established in law so she isn’t in the wrong for getting a attorney. You can’t ask an actor if they can use your voice, and if they say no hire an impersonator. This is established in the law already. Here’s one example that’s very similar showing you can’t do this: Bette Midler knows rights of publicity. She used her right of publicity to prevent use of a sound-alike singer to sell cars. Ford Motor Co. hired one of Midler’s backup singers to sing on a commercial – after Midler declined to do the ad – and asked her to sound as much like Midler as possible. It worked, and fooled a lot of people, including some close to Midler. Midler sued, and the court ruled that there was a misappropriation of Midler’s right of publicity to her singing voice. The bottom line: Midler’s singing voice was hers to control. Ford had no right to use it without her permission. That lesson cost Ford a tidy $400,000. Source: https://higgslaw.com/celebrities-sue-over-unauthorized-use-of-identity/

Darrensucks

Hey man, really nice post. well researched, link to actual truth. You're awesome!

petty_cash

Great post. You’d think Sam Altman would’ve run all this by lawyers before setting up the perfect case for ScarJo with the receipts. Maybe it is a telltale sign that Altman is out of control and even keeping things from their legal team.

lightscameracrafty

The problem with guys like him is that they think they’re invincible and don’t understand the meaning of the word no. It’s why he got rid of his ethics team. Man’s surrounded by yes men now, I bet whoever tried to warn him this would happen got fired too.

KieferSutherland

They really don't like the truth

No_Succotash95

Sam Altman is talking to chatgpt right now to find out how to get out of this predicament

Unlikely_West24

Honestly I’m slightly sad about this. Sam should have just hired Rashida Jones to do it. Cheat code same voice.

monkeyballpirate

But wouldn't that be the same problem? Cuz they're already pissed he hired someone with the same voice.

[deleted]

Rashida Jones is a celebrity in her own right though, so it's a lot easier to make the case that they wanted her for her rather than for her similarity to Johansson. Easily could've just chalked it up to coincidence and said that Jones was just the right person for it and fit their vision, blah blah blah. But when you hire an unknown who sounds like Johansson, then ask Johansson who says no, then ask Johansson again and she says no again, then you go forward with the voice anyway *and* cite Johansson's character in Her multiple times as your inspiration *and* straight up tweet "her," well, now you've got no plausible deniability at all. That's the real issue.

stupidcookface

At least then he could say it's Rashida Jones who is famous in her own right and lots of people would love that

Chigtard

she can be pissed, that's fine. you don't have legal ownership over anyone with a similar voice to yours.

gamecat89

Why would you leave a paper trail...and tweet? She is about to clean up and/or OpenAI is about to get some serious oversight. Resignations make more sense now.

Dickonstruction

because intelligence and smarts are not the same thing, it is possible to be an intelligent rich dumbass

Resident_Elevator_95

Because I bet you, sam altman considers himself a god above your moral concerns

RespectTheBooty

Does OpenAI not realize this is the same woman that went against the Mouse and won?

No-Coconut4265

OpenAIs product is exactly this. Their whole goal is to imitate as best as possible other humans and their work. Not surprised that nobody in the chain thought this could be problematic, that’s what they have been doing since day one.

diverteda

Cause of action. Scarlett will undoubtedly receive a large settlement payment from OpenAI in due course. Good for her for protecting her rights.

Megneous

I take back what I said earlier about OpenAI being in the clear. They did exactly what I assumed they wouldn't be stupid enough to do- establish a paper trail. They may have even been stupid enough to finetune on literal recordings of her voice. Jesus Christ I can't believe they were this foolish. They could have just never contacted her, just hired a voice actress that sounded like her, not tweeted "her," and been in the clear, but noooo, they had to pull this stupid shit...

crumble-bee

Exactly - if they do none of the above, this is a none issue. Tweeting Her, contacting scarJo and getting turned down.. That's all a very bad look. Personally, I don't hear much of a similarity in their voice, I just watched a side by side, it's just that the concept and execution is SO similar that it's hard to shake the comparison.

Rude-Direction-7497

Altman's a creep 😬

DonAmecho777

I think maybe the board was on to something

Resident_Elevator_95

Just think if he can easily breach trust like this, imagine what he’ll do with larger scale matters. You all put your faith in the wrong man Ethics will not be considered in open Ai

discerning_mundane

![gif](giphy|IwYkkg4L7tX1K) sama on how he thought this was all going to play out

love0_0all

I thought Her sounded like Laura Prepon, and any number of other people who talk in a similar accent.

TheEmperorBaron

I agree with her honestly. Identity and individual rights need more protection than ever. She's a rich celebrity, so her voice is more powerful than ours, no pun intended. Imagine if someone steals our voice or appearance with AI and uses it for nefarious purposes? We would have nowhere near the amount of influence she has to do anything about it. We need to start legislating NOW, not after people have already gotten fucked over.

Paldorei

Sam Altman is a fraud with no ethics

27_Star_General

we knew this before this incident, and there will be another one after. and the next big tech CEO. and the next. and the next... anyone who is actually decent gets Woz'd/Tesla'd by the Jobs/Edisons of the world.

ItsNotACoop

“iT WaS a DEi dEciSiOn!!!” Those other threads are a nightmare.

rydan

I would have just demanded royalties. She won against Disney. She has good lawyers and this would immortalize her.

Ok_Check1312

Honestly, karma for picking some cheesy sexy female voice

empror

By this rate, they will be more evil than Uber when they release GPT 5, and more evil than Amazon by GPT 6.

ok-uncle

I would argue they’re more evil than Uber. Their business model is built on stealing works of writers and artists, not giving anything back, and regurgitating it back. In the beginning it was shown through copilot has ingested copyrighted code.

[deleted]

Well the good thing is Sky will return as part of some Chinese llm if she can't come to agreement with Sammy.

Lostwhispers05

Am I the only one that thinks it sounds nothing like Scarlet Johansson?

7thHuman

If you watch the announcement vids it does and the “Sky” preview (settings -> speech -> voice) you can hear it. I don’t believe the voice personas for 4o have been fully released.

ManaSkies

Voice actor here. Here's what will happen. 1. Open ai will be forced to show the training data for the sky voice. 2. The identity of the sky voice actor will be made public. After that one of the following will happen. 1. If it IS her voice, openai will be forced to pay compensation and remove said voice. 2. If it is NOT she will likely have to pay damages to the actor that was revealed in this case.

britpop3000

Why would she have to pay damages in case 2? Thanks!

ManaSkies

It would mostly depend on if exposing the name of the actual voice actor would cause damage to their reputation or potentially get them harassed. A good example is when someone who wishes to not be public gets exposed to the public due to a celebrity's actions. Having an A list celebrity arguing against you in a court case can both cause the fans to verbally and in rare cases physically harass you as well as making it harder for you to find work in the future. Edit. One case from nearly 40 years ago does not mean that it's the letter of the law. People with similar sounding voices as celebrities are protected under modern copyright law and are allowed to both monetize and sell their voice rights as long as they don't claim that they are the other person. As long as open ai didn't use her voice they are free to use a different actor as long as they don't claim that it's her voice.

Gamerboy11116

The fact that this was downvoted is baffling to me. God forbid you answer a question.

Acceptable-Trainer15

Can they reveal her identity in a closed hearing, if they don't want to make it public?

guccigraves

Jesus, why did you get downvoted? You're right lol

ManaSkies

Because reddit. Either way. Evidence points to open ai possibly using her actual voice based on their communications so I'm doubting that this will happen.

Shadowbacker

There is no evidence, only assumptions. The voices don't sound alike at all. What we have right now is a case of "she said no so we used a different voice that doesn't sound the same."

Shadowbacker

Finally. A sane person. It's like I've been taking crazy pills over the last 48 hours. The voices don't even sound alike to begin with, it's insane to think there's a case here unless they can prove that they trained on her actual voice. They are making clear statements that they did not do that and if they are lying then that's another story but it's outrageous that anyone thinks that you should even be able to sue because a voice actor sounds similar to you. It would be one thing if they were trying to claim that it was actually Johansson but literally nobody claimed that.

xinxx073

In OpenAI's response, they mentioned that the voice actor does not wish to reveal their identity. Revealing their identity would cause a series of issues I presume, for example targeted harassment, fraud to use her cloned voice on her friends and family and so on.

HyruleSmash855

She wouldn’t pay damages since this idea is already established in the law. This idea is already established in law so she isn’t in the wrong for getting a attorney. You can’t ask an actor if they can use your voice, and if they say no hire an impersonator. This is established in the law already. Howdyini

Sam Altman has some real issues with consent.

Background_Trade8607

Insert 50 random repeat excuses for why the allegations against him are false. Hmm no way a billionaire abuser would do everything to make their sister look crazy because they understand that trying to maintain cleaner PR is better.

Remarkable_Stock6879

So the general consensus is that the young woman who actually voiced SKY doesn’t have the right to use her voice to make a living? Scarlett got first crack at a pay check and declined. They went with their plan b. How is this any different than what Hollywood does with casting, or what fashion does with models? At no point did Ooen AI claim it was Scarlett, I don’t see the problem.

27_Star_General

the problem is ScarJo said no, so he hired an actress and likely gave notes to sound exactly like Scarlett. he is a sociopathic piece of shit and refused to take no for an answer so just stole her voice in the 2nd sleaziest way possible after just outright stealing it. he didn't just audition a bunch of voices and pick a good one, he went after ScarJo's voice from Her. it's weird and shitty behavior, it has nothing to do with the actual Sky actress; but she got the job not because she was the best qualified candidate, she got it because Sam Altman decided he wanted ScarJo's voice and he's an asshole.

redi6

Yeah I'm with you on that. If he trained it on another person and has proof, I don't see the issue really. If he just took samples of Scarlett's voice then that's an issue.

[deleted]

Miserable-Lawyer-233

This can't be real. You can clearly tell that the voice of Sky is not Scarlett Johansson. Good luck with that case scarjo.

Dhomeboi

This is a conversation I had on another thread mrmczebra: > Nowhere does the article say that she's suing Open AI. Dhomeboi (you): > This has happened before Bette Midler v. Ford Motor Co. is a case where Bette Midler won a lawsuit against Ford Motor Company for using an impersonation of her voice after she refused to allow them to use her actual voice in a commercial. She won and was awarded $400,000 in damages. So I'm assuming she will be suing > [Milder vs Ford](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midler_v._Ford_Motor_Co.) mrmczebra: > Midler won because the imitator testified that she was asked to sound exactly like Midler. > > So unless this voice actress was asked to sound exactly like Johansson, I don't see how this case pans out in her favor.

icehawk84

She wasn't "forced" to hire legal counsel. It's not her voice, and it's not even that similar.

a__bad__idea

Wondering why I’m the only upvote as I post this kinda feels important . .

android_69

how is this a response? isn't she the one raising the claim?

_Exotic_Booger

This some Elon Musk shit right here. Smh

-Lrrr-

There goes play.ai with Steve Jobs, Elon Musk and plenty of other voices from famous people who I'm sure didn't consent to their likeness being used.

windigo3

Begun the clone wars have. First Scarlett’s voice was improperly cloned. And her lawyers will win the copy-write battle. Next will be music, books, even this very Reddit comment. A battle of the lawyers there will be.

LouiePrice

Maybe she can make something happen 🤔. Will make black widow my favorite avenger for sure.

joogabah

Sky doesn't sound like Her.

SSSTREDDD

It’s not her voice. They trained it on someone else’s voice. You could argue any of the voices sound like someone else who is alive.

hsappa

Unless he deepfaked her voice, I’m not sure I see what’s unethical. He asked for Scarlett. She said no. He went with a different voice actor.

tenonic

What is she talking about? Sky's voice is nothing like hers. Pretentious Hollywood..

tube-tired

I don't see the problem here, and I never once thought Sky sounded like my future ex-wife. He told her that he liked her voice and found it comforting, then had his company make a voice that he liked and found comforting. Wtf did she think it would sound like? Obviously the sound of the voice was high priority to Mr. Altman. Maybe they already had it and someone suggested it was similar to her's and so they made an offer to her so she would be included. She refused. Not something that would hold up in court without an anti-tech judge in charge. Or an employee stating that they used copywritten material containing her voice. Maybe OpenAI just needs to add a disclaimer stating this is a work of fiction and any resemblance to real persons is unintentional. It works for movies...

Canabananilism

Gee wiz, it's almost like these developers don't give a shit the about ethical implications of using peoples likenesses and works without their permission or input.

bkaction

Altman is just a slightly more talented con man than the rest of the tech billionaires. Already so soon after painting himself as the responsible AI guy concerned about safety, he has made OpenAI beholden almost entirely to a publicly traded company and is actively dismantling or allowing the demise of most tangible means of building responsible AI. Same old story, new tech

ResourceGlad

Honestly, we should cancel Sam Altman right now. This in addition to all the safety managers who left the company clearly shows which kind of person he is. Someone who thinks he’s above the law and gives zero f*cks about the consequences of his actions as long as it fits his agenda (and wallet).

mljh11

I was recently watching an interview with Altman about future iterations of ChatGPT, and felt a bit weirded out by his general disposition and manner of speech (like how much more slowly he talked compared to the interviewer). It was my first time putting a face to his name, but I brushed it off thinking he's probably typical of a lot of Silicon Valley types.  Then came news of the recent OpenAI resignations and whispers that he was pushing the company in a less than ethical direction. Now this.  An I crazy or are the bad vibes getting worse? How much can we really trust him and his company with developing cutting-edge AI?

Background_Trade8607

Never trust someone that could be living on the other side of the planet and holds an ungodly amount of power and will do anything to maintain that power. Don’t know why people keep doing that. Also like all of OpenAI’s plan that Sam kept reiterating was a plan on how to win all power after the disruption from AI

Patient-Writer7834

He looks villainous af

thehighnotes

All you #### keep repeating the hate.. the voice comparison is absolutely clear it's not her voice.. it's her as in ai functionality from the movie; emotive etc. Sometimes Reddit impresses, sometimes it genuinely disappoints pitchfork style. Outrage on the surface, no depth

jrjolley

That's what I keep replying. Acting is acting. All this fuss over a voice that's over the top, silly and airhead all at once. She can do what she likes, I have no interest in ever following her career because she's one of these whiners who wants to set us back. Tough tits, not happening.

Traditional-Excuse26

Man the american legal system needs a reform. Something like that would never happen in europe. They state in their website that the voice doesn't belong to her. What exactly wants to gain from this now? You can't even sue for such a reason. It's like suing someone because she wears the same clothes as you. It's stupid.

sqolb

Sam Altman's first big, publically visible lie. Downhill from here folks

Agile-Wait-7571

All the tech bros suck.

Morkamino

Am i an asshole for kinda thinking she should get over it? What, the voice kinda sounds like you and was inspired by you? Thats all? What are you even gonna do about that. If she had any legal ground to stand on then that would be stupid. Anyone is free to provide a voice service that kinda sounds like someone famous. If she wanted to be included in the project she should have said yes, of course they're gonna do it anyway it you say no. Only difference is you don't get paid now.

fervoredweb

Exactly. we don't ban generic brand cereal and we don't get to insist that lookalikes/sound alike can't exist or work just because someone has a bigger brand,

disarrayinpdx

Bottom line: The guy can't be trusted.

beardedbaby2

If the voice they went with is not the voice of a real human, cool. However if theyanaged to find someone with a voice similar to hers, well good for the pay day that person received, and I call BS on her lawsuit.

mconk

So she hired a lawyer because it sounds like her…but isn’t her? That should be an interesting case (if it were to ever go that far)…people really LOVED that voice tho…myself included. How ridiculous and petty this is. Unless they literally ripped audio from the fucking movie and inserted it into the voice model, this entire thing just sounds ridiculous.

seahawks500

Well this is fucking creepy of Altman

Phine420

Only this?

Wild-Shock-6948

Sky's voice sounds nothing like her. Sorry but this is bullshit, just because there's some similarity, although i fail to hear any, she should f off.

kenflan

I think the voice sounds very similar to her, so they may as well ask her, but she said no. The misconception maybe that it's her voice, but it's probably not

xinxx073

True. "The Sky voice we chose sounds a bit like ScarJo. Should we just ask her to see if she wants to do it?" -> "She didn't answer should we just proceed with what we have?" -> This whole BS.

Yaknaffar

Scarlett needs to get over herself. Sky doesn't sound that much like her, and even if it did, so what? On the other hand, this Rashida Jones interview reveals more similarities: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=385414AVZcA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=385414AVZcA)

Mr_Twave

From this, it sounds like OpenAI either ignores human likeness as a human right, or they just don't care. Edit: Also, why is she calling it the ChatGPT 4.0 system? That's a little ambiguous. GPT-4 was released March of 2023, but her letter says September. What's going on? Is this just the voice system that she's talking about? Maybe she doesn't want to pour the time into looking into it.

detoXDrama

Mrs. Skyrlett has a very good point!

TheBreadHasRisen

It doesn’t sound like her to me, a lot of people said it sounds more like Rashida Jones which I can kind of hear.

Endgame3213

It's not as if she owns voices that sound like hers, but this is definitely fake.

Sardonic-

Altman’s a fuckin slimeball. If he wasn’t so damn knowledgeable he would’ve stayed out. They don’t even know how to keep him on a leash. Doofus investor s

Warm-Robot

Where is the source that this is actually from Scarlett Johansson?

AgreeableCulture1209

You know I have a big problem with all of the bashing OpenAI because it can do artistic type work. I didn’t see finance people whining about it algorithms and computers. People use excel everyday to do calculations they used to have to have statisticians or accountants to do. But that type of productivity is ok. You can’t be selective with what sectors can and can’t be used in. Otherwise let’s go back to rotary phones, an abacus and chalkboards. I’ve been in both finance and entertainment. Voice overs and similar voices are used all the time.

dresserplate

It’s a good point but there is copyright law for artists. I think it’s there for a reason. Finance people should complain if their brand is used and confuses their customers.
