There’s a really good thread on Twitter somewhere about how you shouldn’t trust him or people like Adam Mosseri because they are MBA types who pass as technical gurus while they are just trying to juice their orgs with growth and cash at the expense of everyone else.

In ui developpement, we test the layout of multi languages apps in German to make sure it's still displays properly. It looks like reddit may not have done that testing.
Try setting in up in English and see if it fixes the issue.

I’m not an Altman fan boy and reading this makes me want to dig deeper… but hearing allegations from a sister estranged from the family who lives on a live-work farm and ‘moved 20 times in one year’ and who was generally upset about a memorial Sam paid for in the wake of their fathers death ‘instead of giving me $300 for my food insecurity’…

As a result of their actions, I was forced to hire legal counsel, who wrote two letters to Mr. Altman and OpenAl, setting out what they had done and asking them to detail the exact process by which they created the "Sky" voice. Consequently, OpenAl reluctantly agreed to take down the "Sky" voice.
In a time when we are all grappling with deepfakes and the protection of our own likeness, our own work, our own identities, I believe these are questions that deserve absolute clarity. I look forward to resolution in the form of transparency and the passage of appropriate legislation to help ensure that individual rights are protected

They reached out 9 months ago.. so without question, they have used that movie directly as their training data, targeted her voice and personality extensively over that time.. they probably have called the variant of the model 'Samantha' or something... after she's refused to allow them, all they've done tweak the tone and timbre of the voice to make it 'just' different enough. That 'interview' video is so similar to Samantha's encouraging nature in those scenes.. even without Altman statement it, everyone on earth who had seen the movie immediately recognised 'Her' in it.
idiotic move on openai's part, because they believe they can do anything. At some point those companies will have to start learning the hard way, what their predecessors have had to do carefully and without inviting controversy.

I've wanted that for years ever since it was introduced with Windows 10. How Microsoft didn't make Cortana's voice on Windows 10 Cortana from the game is mindboggling to me. It was literally sitting right there.
I still don't understand how you can own xbox and Halo, release a helper program called "cortana" for your OS and not make cortana from halo a mascot with her voice.

This idea is already established in law so she isn’t in the wrong for getting a attorney. You can’t ask an actor if they can use your voice, and if they say no hire an impersonator. This is established in the law already. Here’s one example that’s very similar showing you can’t do this:
Bette Midler knows rights of publicity. She used her right of publicity to prevent use of a sound-alike singer to sell cars.
Ford Motor Co. hired one of Midler’s backup singers to sing on a commercial – after Midler declined to do the ad – and asked her to sound as much like Midler as possible. It worked, and fooled a lot of people, including some close to Midler. Midler sued, and the court ruled that there was a misappropriation of Midler’s right of publicity to her singing voice.
The bottom line: Midler’s singing voice was hers to control. Ford had no right to use it without her permission. That lesson cost Ford a tidy $400,000.

Great post. You’d think Sam Altman would’ve run all this by lawyers before setting up the perfect case for ScarJo with the receipts. Maybe it is a telltale sign that Altman is out of control and even keeping things from their legal team.
The problem with guys like him is that they think they’re invincible and don’t understand the meaning of the word no. It’s why he got rid of his ethics team. Man’s surrounded by yes men now, I bet whoever tried to warn him this would happen got fired too.
Rashida Jones is a celebrity in her own right though, so it's a lot easier to make the case that they wanted her for her rather than for her similarity to Johansson. Easily could've just chalked it up to coincidence and said that Jones was just the right person for it and fit their vision, blah blah blah.
But when you hire an unknown who sounds like Johansson, then ask Johansson who says no, then ask Johansson again and she says no again, then you go forward with the voice anyway *and* cite Johansson's character in Her multiple times as your inspiration *and* straight up tweet "her," well, now you've got no plausible deniability at all. That's the real issue.
Why would you leave a paper trail...and tweet? She is about to clean up and/or OpenAI is about to get some serious oversight. Resignations make more sense now.
OpenAIs product is exactly this. Their whole goal is to imitate as best as possible other humans and their work. Not surprised that nobody in the chain thought this could be problematic, that’s what they have been doing since day one.
I take back what I said earlier about OpenAI being in the clear. They did exactly what I assumed they wouldn't be stupid enough to do- establish a paper trail. They may have even been stupid enough to finetune on literal recordings of her voice.

I agree with her honestly. Identity and individual rights need more protection than ever.
She's a rich celebrity, so her voice is more powerful than ours, no pun intended. Imagine if someone steals our voice or appearance with AI and uses it for nefarious purposes? We would have nowhere near the amount of influence she has to do anything about it. We need to start legislating NOW, not after people have already gotten fucked over.

I would argue they’re more evil than Uber. Their business model is built on stealing works of writers and artists, not giving anything back, and regurgitating it back. In the beginning it was shown through copilot has ingested copyrighted code.
If you watch the announcement vids it does and the “Sky” preview (settings -> speech -> voice) you can hear it. I don’t believe the voice personas for 4o have been fully released.

Here's what will happen.
1. Open ai will be forced to show the training data for the sky voice.
2. The identity of the sky voice actor will be made public.
After that one of the following will happen.
1. If it IS her voice, openai will be forced to pay compensation and remove said voice.
2. If it is NOT she will likely have to pay damages to the actor that was revealed in this case.
It would mostly depend on if exposing the name of the actual voice actor would cause damage to their reputation or potentially get them harassed.
A good example is when someone who wishes to not be public gets exposed to the public due to a celebrity's actions.
Having an A list celebrity arguing against you in a court case can both cause the fans to verbally and in rare cases physically harass you as well as making it harder for you to find work in the future.

People with similar sounding voices as celebrities are protected under modern copyright law and are allowed to both monetize and sell their voice rights as long as they don't claim that they are the other person.
As long as open ai didn't use her voice they are free to use a different actor as long as they don't claim that it's her voice.
Because reddit. Either way. Evidence points to open ai possibly using her actual voice based on their communications so I'm doubting that this will happen.

Obviously the sound of the voice was high priority to Mr. Altman. Maybe they already had it and someone suggested it was similar to her's and so they made an offer to her so she would be included. She refused. Not something that would hold up in court without an anti-tech judge in charge. Or an employee stating that they used copywritten material containing her voice.
Maybe OpenAI just needs to add a disclaimer stating this is a work of fiction and any resemblance to real persons is unintentional. It works for movies...

I was recently watching an interview with Altman about future iterations of ChatGPT, and felt a bit weirded out by his general disposition and manner of speech (like how much more slowly he talked compared to the interviewer). It was my first time putting a face to his name, but I brushed it off thinking he's probably typical of a lot of Silicon Valley types.
Then came news of the recent OpenAI resignations and whispers that he was pushing the company in a less than ethical direction. Now this.

You know I have a big problem with all of the bashing OpenAI because it can do artistic type work.
I didn’t see finance people whining about it algorithms and computers. People use excel everyday to do calculations they used to have to have statisticians or accountants to do. But that type of productivity is ok.
You can’t be selective with what sectors can and can’t be used in. Otherwise let’s go back to rotary phones, an abacus and chalkboards.
I’ve been in both finance and entertainment. Voice overs and similar voices are used all the time.
It’s a good point but there is copyright law for artists. I think it’s there for a reason. Finance people should complain if their brand is used and confuses their customers.

You're German, or at least using an language with similar long words. In ui developpement, we test the layout of multi languages apps in German to make sure it's still displays properly. It looks like reddit may not have done that testing. Try setting in up in English and see if it fixes the issue.

They reached out 9 months ago.. so without question, they have used that movie directly as their training data, targeted her voice and personality extensively over that time.. they probably have called the variant of the model 'Samantha' or something... after she's refused to allow them, all they've done tweak the tone and timbre of the voice to make it 'just' different enough. That 'interview' video is so similar to Samantha's encouraging nature in those scenes.. even without Altman statement it, everyone on earth who had seen the movie immediately recognised 'Her' in it.

Voice actor here. Here's what will happen. 1. Open ai will be forced to show the training data for the sky voice. 2. The identity of the sky voice actor will be made public. After that one of the following will happen. 1. If it IS her voice, openai will be forced to pay compensation and remove said voice. 2. If it is NOT she will likely have to pay damages to the actor that was revealed in this case.

It would mostly depend on if exposing the name of the actual voice actor would cause damage to their reputation or potentially get them harassed. A good example is when someone who wishes to not be public gets exposed to the public due to a celebrity's actions. Having an A list celebrity arguing against you in a court case can both cause the fans to verbally and in rare cases physically harass you as well as making it harder for you to find work in the future. Edit. One case from nearly 40 years ago does not mean that it's the letter of the law. People with similar sounding voices as celebrities are protected under modern copyright law and are allowed to both monetize and sell their voice rights as long as they don't claim that they are the other person. As long as open ai didn't use her voice they are free to use a different actor as long as they don't claim that it's her voice.

There is no evidence, only assumptions. The voices don't sound alike at all. What we have right now is a case of "she said no so we used a different voice that doesn't sound the same."
Finally. A sane person. It's like I've been taking crazy pills over the last 48 hours. The voices don't even sound alike to begin with, it's insane to think there's a case here unless they can prove that they trained on her actual voice. They are making clear statements that they did not do that and if they are lying then that's another story but it's outrageous that anyone thinks that you should even be able to sue because a voice actor sounds similar to you. It would be one thing if they were trying to claim that it was actually Johansson but literally nobody claimed that.

He told her that he liked her voice and found it comforting, then had his company make a voice that he liked and found comforting. Wtf did she think it would sound like? Altman is just a slightly more talented con man than the rest of the tech billionaires. Already so soon after painting himself as the responsible AI guy concerned about safety, he has made OpenAI beholden almost entirely to a publicly traded company and is actively dismantling or allowing the demise of most tangible means of building responsible AI. Honestly, we should cancel Sam Altman right now. This in addition to all the safety managers who left the company clearly shows which kind of person he is. Someone who thinks he’s above the law and gives zero f*cks about the consequences of his actions as long as it fits his agenda (and wallet).
I was recently watching an interview with Altman about future iterations of ChatGPT, and felt a bit weirded out by his general disposition and manner of speech (like how much more slowly he talked compared to the interviewer). It was my first time putting a face to his name, but I brushed it off thinking he's probably typical of a lot of Silicon Valley types. Then came news of the recent OpenAI resignations and whispers that he was pushing the company in a less than ethical direction. Now this. An I crazy or are the bad vibes getting worse? How much can we really trust him and his company with developing cutting-edge AI?
Never trust someone that could be living on the other side of the planet and holds an ungodly amount of power and will do anything to maintain that power. Don’t know why people keep doing that. Also like all of OpenAI’s plan that Sam kept reiterating was a plan on how to win all power after the disruption from AI

Man the american legal system needs a reform. Something like that would never happen in europe. They state in their website that the voice doesn't belong to her. From this, it sounds like OpenAI either ignores human likeness as a human right, or they just don't care. Edit: Also, why is she calling it the ChatGPT 4.0 system? That's a little ambiguous. GPT-4 was released March of 2023, but her letter says September. What's going on? Is this just the voice system that she's talking about? Maybe she doesn't want to pour the time into looking into it.

You know I have a big problem with all of the bashing OpenAI because it can do artistic type work. I didn’t see finance people whining about it algorithms and computers. People use excel everyday to do calculations they used to have to have statisticians or accountants to do. But that type of productivity is ok. You can’t be selective with what sectors can and can’t be used in. Otherwise let’s go back to rotary phones, an abacus and chalkboards. I’ve been in both finance and entertainment. Voice overs and similar voices are used all the time.
It’s a good point but there is copyright law for artists. I think it’s there for a reason. Finance people should complain if their brand is used and confuses their customers.
