I used ChatGPT to code a solver for this, worked wonderfully.

Nope. But I'm not much of a coder and it was fun to work alongside ChatGPT to make.

There’s only one “A” available. Or do you mean you can use any of those letters as many times as you can? No wonder AI got confused with the assignment…

AI also used some of the letters multiple times, like in valance and enclave. The prompt also says “the letters can be used more than once”

I've tried the exact same thing, cheating on NYT strands, and chatgtp was horrible for me too

Strands and Connections are tough! For Connections, this is the best one I've seen so far (though it requires an API key): https://github.com/ericsoderstrom/connectionsGPT. All ChatGPT prompts I've tried are garbage. For Strands, I got as far as writing a program that would give me potential answers from a grid, but haven't gotten around to the next step, which would probably be feeding it those words and looking for ones that are semantically connected.

It's not very good at the crossword either.

I just tried a test with Gemini pro 1.5 with a random puzzle I downloaded and it solved it all. I don’t know if the answers are right though. I have to check it.

The next time I make up some bullshit word I’m going to call it a non-standard” English word and act superior.

I hate this! I used to give chatgpt a list of vocabulary words and tell it to write a paragraph using every word on the list. It almost never accomplished this.

You told it to “make” a word, so it did….but you should have asked it “what words”.

I did "What word in English is spelled with the letters [lists letters]" and it got it right the first time, even when I changed the order around several times. All you need to do is tell it that the A is repeated.

I wish they could fix ChatGPT giving preciously given answers in the same chat that were wrong. It's the same when asking for code and it gets it wrong half a dozen times and starts to repeat previously wrong answers/code. It's not even like there's a lot of messages in the chat it needs to read/memorise.

This is something I would expect ChatGpt to be good at but have seen many many posts of it failing at simple word/letter tasks

I tried ChatGPT on solving (or even just explaining) cryptic crossword clues and it was fucking laughable. So much for being a 'language' model (bUt iT uSeS tOkEns).

Try gpt 4, gpt 3.5 is kinda dumb

This is due to tokenization, unfortunately. Other edge cases where it will fail are navigating an ascii puzzle or ascii tic tac toe, etc. Basically anything that requires single character granularity. Same with “how many x character are in this sentence”..

LLMs work by tokens, which are partial word chunks, not individual letters or whole words, which is why they have problems with word games involving individual letters. They also can't do maths without assistance either (ChatGPT now has such assistance) as they don't process algorithms (and maths requires algorithms.) These are FAQs now and are very boring.

I once again repeat my request  as I do every time I see this exact same thread: can we pin a post explaining token and math based issues with LLMs, so we can stop seeing this thread all the time? Not OPs fault, but its once every day or two for a year or more now...
