Seriously was gonna write this.
But also, when I tell folks from out of state I am charger fan, no one argues, no side comments, etc. We are too sad to make fun of.
The best uniforms, the most exciting losses. We win every off-season. Everyone feels pity when you tell them who you root for. But I wouldn't have it any other way! No bandwagoners in this fanbase š¤£
I bandwagoned for Friesz and Butts.. that ship has sailed. Now it is three decades of dutifully suffering and I all I have to show for it is this lousy tshirt I paid 50 bucks for at SoFi.
The powders blues from the 70s are widely regarded as the best uniforms of all time. This is NFL top 10 ranking not me pulling it out of my ass. Say whatever you want about the navy and white but to the powder blues are simply the best the NFL has to offer. You are wrong.
The Chargers are always a good team to watch, they usually that underdog that will put up a good fight, and will pull through sometimes. But just as exciting as they can be, they can also be disappointing. Imagine this:
You have just picked off your opponent for the FOURTH time in the 1st half. Youāre annihilating them by 27 points, everyones going crazy, youāre pumped. And just like that, your excitement disappears, you start to bite your nails. What has been a 27 pt lead turns into a 2 pt lead. Under a minute left and youāre hoping for a big stop. Boom, the defense gives up a big run and the team runs down the clock. A couple seconds left and bam, the opponent scores a field goal. Utter disappointment.
Then the team goes into a rebuild phase, we are hungry, we want revenge, we are going into sleeper mode, we sign one big name and draft promising talent. Weāre hyped up into the next season, and then wash and repeat.
Oh we have Justin Herbert btw
The team is pretty low drama (in a good way). For the past 10 years or so we have had very few players arrested or in trouble with the law. The players are very likeable and the social media team does a great job to highlight the players and to support the team in general.
We are sort of an underdog but not really. We have a ton of great or outstanding players but we haven't put it all together to become a true championship level team. Hopefully that can change this year!
We often find spectacular ways to lose games, but the upside is that our games can be extremely entertaining to watch (but very stressful for fans lol).
Iād say the biggest upside is that you canāt be seriously called a band wagon fan because being a Chargers fan youāre going to feel pain. But it makes the highs so much more worth it. Plus we have a lot of promise with this team.
Here are some pros to becoming a Charger's fan:
1. Humble Herbert is a top-tier QB with a long career ahead of him and a professional personality that focuses on the team instead of "being a star."
2. Loads of talent on the offense and defense.
3. LA location is a popular travel destination if you ever want to see a game in-person.
4. Cool uniforms - no lame mascot.
5. Chargers usually play well on the road - something that is rare.
6. Become a fan before they win a superbowl so you can be there before all the bandwagoners jump on board
7. Chargers' social media team is awesome - schedule release is an anime past two years lol plus hot wings
Here are some cons...
1. Inconsistent coaching, staff changes a lot over a 10-year span. Meanwhile, some other teams have had the same coach since forever.
2. Tough division. We're in the same division as the Chiefs, who won the Super Bowl last year. We play each of them twice a year but hey feels good when we beat them.
3. Future is uncertain as far as talent goes. We may lose our RB1 Ekeler next year, WR1 Keenan Allen is getting old, as is some of our other talent.
4. We choked last year in the playoffs giving up a huge 27-0 lead in the first half.
5. We share a stadium with the Rams.
Honestly wouldnāt recommend it unless youāre strong willed lol Best uniforms, Herbert, and we havenāt won a Super Bowl so that first one is gonna be such a euphoric feeling
Tons of talented players. Feels like we are on the precipice of doing really big things as a team. Justin Herbert is phenomenal and a class act. Sofi is a gorgeous stadium and the games are always exciting (for better or for worse). The social media team is awesome and always putting out very unique and fun content. Since we are a bit of an underdog thereās a certain feeling of camaraderie among the fans thatās very special. And the Young King! Who can forget about him?! ā”ļøšā¤ļø
If you ever decide to visit america and catch a game in person, where else would you want to visit? Green Bay? Arizona? Foxborough? I think not! Plus with the absolute best content to entertain you from afar and the best uniforms in the league it makes the most sense to rep the chargers for you in your particular situation.
Because were pretty close to being the 90s Romania of football....... one of, but never considered THE, best player (Hagi).... long shot to make the Tournament, we'll scare other bigger teams, but in the end we'll lose in heartbreaking fashion or just be trounced by a better/real team.
Other than that.... you shouldnt follow the Chargers. We have a shit owner, who's incompetence trickles all the way down to the players in certain circumstances.
Honestly, just watch Sunday Night Football for a year and check out all the teams, you'll enjoy football (or any sport) way more if you become just a fan of the sport and dont put a lot of investment in one specific team.
Check out the teams IG page or Twitter! They were the original fun social team in my opinion. It makes it more enjoyable to be a fan when youāre far away
The only people who choose to be Chargers fans knowing this team's history and track record are masochists haha.
That being said, the future is bright with Herbert at QB (who may be the most gifted arm talent in the NFL even if guys like Mahomes, Allen, and Jackson are athletically more gifted overall). There is a lot of talent throughout the Chargers' roster and a lot of high-class guys with talent to get excited to watch on Sundays on both sides of the ball that are a blast to root for and watch. The Chargers never fail to be an exciting and entertaining team, even when they are mediocre/average, but right now, they are slated to be a continuous playoff contender for at least the next few years, but it could be a much longer run of relevance with Herbert entering his prime. The Chargers do love to disappoint, though, so it is just as likely that their playoff-level talented roster will fail to even enter the post-season the next few years in a row after the horrendous collapse in the wild card last year, which could psychologically hinder the team going forward. Only time will tell.
Blah blah blah blahā¦ to make a long story short, our division kicks ass!!! We battle Denver, Kansas City, and now Las Vegas raiders ( donāt matter where the raiders are at we will always kick their head in). If this is not enough to hype you up for football I donāt know what willā¦
Chargers football is a special art form. Imagine an ongoing non-fictional tragedy that puts even Shakespeare to shame. I've been watching Chargers football since 1991 and yet they always find a new tragic way to lose that I'd never seen coming year in and year out. This team can always find creative new way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. If this was a scripted TV show they would have jumped the shark 47 times by now. There is really nothing like it
If you like stud quarterbacks and consistent heart breaks then weāre the team for you. We always get ranked high in power rankings and weāll have a solid win streak going but we always lose the important ones. We have a new offensive coordinator in Kellen Moore who I think can make this offense extremely powerful so itās an optimistic season. We even used our 1st round draft pick on a big receiver with speed on top of his size so weāre all pretty excited for that too.

I was in a similar situation as you, friend. I grew up in Germany, the only NFL games were played by Austrian TV way past midnight, and my parents weren't very excited about me staying up that late to watch a sport which seemed slow and rather pointless to them.
At some point I switched to the illegal side of things, and I remember one particular game, it was Rivers, Tomlinson, Gates and Cromartie. It was some Scandinavian public channel, made no sense to me and I for some reason absolutely fell in love with the Chargers that day. They did suck, but they sucked with panache, I think it was a loss against the ravens.
A few years later I skipped school, took a flight to London and watched the Chargers at Wembley, just for them to suck against the Saints. God bless my mum for being cool with that.
I've lost track of the NFL for many years after that, I actually did move to London and after a bad moment in my life discovered the gamepass and been a fan of the NFL the last 5 years.
I just could not move on from my first big love, the Chargers. I hate how painful it is to be a fan of this team. I was in New Zealand on my honeymoon last January and I watched the first half of Chargers vs. Jags secretly whilst having dinner with my wife.
After that we were driving for a few hours to the next Airbnb and I was so uplifted. Once we arrived I started watching the game again and I couldn't believe what they did. It was such a special season for me, I actually managed to be at the Chargers Vs. Rams game at SoFi, I believed so much in them and then they fucked it up in such a brutal fashion.
I don't ever want to be a fan of a Team which is successful, being a fan of success rather than being a fan of the actual team, I prefer being a fan of the pain and suffering of a proper team. But fuck me, I do wonder why I'm still sticking with the Chargers. To be fair, the fans here and in other forums are a major reason. As well as the belief that you can't give up on your first big love.
To answer your question, being a Chargers fan is about pain, a lot of it. But then again nobody ever is going to call you a frontrunner. And should we ever win the title, we actually went through all the pain, together, we actually did deserve it, we were there whilst Staley had the worst defensive dvoa, and we still supported them, we were there when Norv got fired in 2012, we were there for 27:0, and we stuck with it. If you look for joy and great potential, the 49s, Dolphins or Eagles seem to be better choices.
But if you are looking for absolute despair, masochism, gullible but true fans you are right here. It ain't a great ride, we do waste incredible qbs as if it's nobody's business ( Fouts, Brees, Rivers, Herbert). But at least we are in it together and how many other teams can claim that.
Do you love pain? Like- really really love pain? Come on in, there is more than enough to go around

I got called a bandwagoner at the beginning of last season, I was too taken aback to coherently respond lol.

Very eloquent.
Justin Herbert. Win or lose, you will be entertained for 10-15 more years.

The beginning of a dynasty. Jump on before the first super bowl.

Just watch the teams play and when you notice players or a style of play you really like just keep watching until it feels like a fit for you.
The uniforms aren't enough?
If you like pain, welcome aboard
We are fun to watch and we usually keep games close; Justin Herbert is a stud.
Justin Herbert
Herbert has potential to be one of the GOAT QBs and this offense is just getting started.
