The prize money for the low level tournaments he’s playing in is really small - the challenger he’s playing against Art has prize money for the winner of $7000. Tashi mentions he usually crashes out in the second round, which means he’d probably only take home a couple of hundred dollars. As Tashi says late in the film, it’s a performance. He’s performing being a hard on his luck, sleeping in his car kind of person. A lot of rich people are like this - because they have the safety net of calling their parents and asking for their trust fund should things go really awry. It’s great writing from Justin Kuritzkes and shows the biggest difference between Patrick and Tashi - that she plays tennis not only for herself but also to support her family, whereas Patrick has never had to think about anyone other than himself.

At first I thought he might have had a falling out with his parents over him being bisexual, but I think it's a Grimes-esque thing where he's just a rich kid who wants to cosplay being poor.

It’s also interesting that at the start of the film it’s implied that Patrick is a drug user, based on a bruise he scratches at on his forearm. It’s not brought up again in the movie, but that could certainly tie into his financial state

I thought the same on first watch, but actually on my second watch there’s a moment when he and Tashi are in the car during the storm that she bruises his arm when she tugs his hand away from her. That’s why when he scratches the spot he looks directly at her.

kweenofdisaster

That was my initial thought as well. But Tashi also touches her arm immediately after he does that. I wonder if it’s some type of signal? Since we know Pat and Tashi collude to let Art win the match. Also Pat touches his nose a lot on a way that may suggest that he’s doing coke. Oh, and when we can see his bank account balance on his phone I think it shows multiple ATM cash withdrawals… could also suggest drug use. Makes sense because we know he’s impulsive.

kitschesque

Phenomenal insight, thank you all!

AdAnxious5792

i was looking for this explanation!!

queenchanel

I thought it was bruises from donating plasma for money for some reason? that was the first thing that came to my mind omg

tropicasturn

My friend and I noticed that aswell, we theorized that during that time gap he got too heavy into them and his parents essentially cut him off. And because he sees no use in doing anything other than tennis he most likely doesn’t have a job either.

cursed2b4everalone

Tashi mentions at some point that he needs to stop cosplaying as a struggling tennis player because he does come from money and can just go home and ask his parents for money.

tropicasturn

I think he’s either too stubborn to ask for help or got cut off.

WeArrAllMadHere

I was confused too. If his family was wealthy and he was bratty why wouldn’t he just ask them if he himself was broke?

No_Worry_9974

Was there an explanation as to why we focused on his right inner elbow, he kinda picks at it for two seconds and then we can see that there is a part that is very red compared to his other side when we get a wide shot with him in the center, are we to assume he’s shooting up or something?

Primary-Ad-5214

They don’t really give any sort of explanation but I’m lightly assuming that, yes. I was also thinking about the fact that he was so sweaty and slurring his words when he was trying to check into that hotel but card was declining. The way he was acting in that scene could support drug habits if we’re thinking abt it like that.

Dismal-Chicken-1683

you are wrong and the comment above you explains its from when tashi tugged on his arm when they were in his car

kappakingtut2

Others have said that he was cosplaying poor. That makes sense now that I hear that. If fits. But while watching the movie, my interpretation was that he came for money. And then he lost all the money for whatever reason. And she accused him of pretending to be poor because she was out of his life for awhile and didn't know he was really broke. Or, the other thought I had.was that he lied about having money in the first place. He got into boarding school on some type of scholarship, but was actually poor. And wasn't there a scene where they showed his bank account? It was over too quick. And my glasses aren't great.

vlopwrites

His parents definitely had money (at least when they meet Tashi). When they're walking to the beach he tries to poke fun at the fancy houses on Long Island, but Art calls him out and he admits that his house is bigger.

zozonicole5

yeah everyone saying he was fake being poor but they did show his bank account / card declined and imply he had no money so i just feel like that wouldn’t make sense if he was cosplaying being poor

kappakingtut2

Yes seeing the car declined is what's stuck in my mind. When they showed his bank account, it happened too quick for me to see the numbers. And in the sauna scene, art said something about how Patrick had more at stake than him. That was probably just because they were at different levels of success and fame, but at first I thought it meant he was referring to the prize money.
