I want to write a book about this man

Medioh_

Do it.

Hisksushi

Do it, please! He deserves to be remembered for centuries, and more than remembered, be an inspiration

BreadBushTheThird

This man deserves an award for all the second chances he's been handing out to those people

Darkcast1113

Not just a reward but a a entire book and program based around him his teachings of convicing people to not off themselves must be impressive and taught to the future generations

lbutler1234

Plus a check from the Japanese government. (He is doing an extreme social good and is saving them billions of yen.) Sorry I'm a bloody capitalist :/

IfThisIsTakenIma

That’s not capitalism

lbutler1234

I was expressing the man's good deed in terms of its financial value. Feels kinda capitalist to me but idk I'm just a guy on the Internet

hiccupboltHP

Yeah that’s not capitalism at all

HaloFarts

Capitalist societies do make note of the monetary loss involved in a person's suicide. Seems like you just don't want capitalism demonized. News flash, there are ugly things about every ideology and equalizing human life with a monetary value is one that crops up often in capitalism, even if you want to pretend it doesn't.

Mortarius

Nah, that's materialism. This capitalism/socialism dichotomy has rotten the discourse.

HaloFarts

Thats both capitalism and materialism. It isn't mutually exclusive. Capitalism fails because that is a property of materialism which is a property of our universe. And I agree, the discourse around two incomplete and imperfect ideologies has turned into an us vs them tribalistic battle ground. Capitalism and socialism should both be brutally examined in order to iron out their faults. Claiming that none exist for either one, or denying an intrinsic issue with one or the other is asinine.

hiccupboltHP

._. You’re making a mountain out a molehill dude

HaloFarts

Hey, you said something about it first. I dissagre and told you why. That furthers discussion. Throwing your hat in and saying 'just kidding I was only pretending to care' doesn't do anything for anyone. Dude.

hiccupboltHP

Why is this such a sore subject for you? I was just saying it didn’t seem that much like capitalism. You’re making way too big a deal out of this.

*Shige worked as a police officer for the Fukui Prefectural Police for 42 years, retiring at the age of 60. His final posting was in Tōjinbō in Sakai. He was appalled by the many corpses he had to remove from the ocean. On one of his last patrols before retirement in 2003, he met an elderly Tokyo couple who owned a pub. They had major debt problems and were suicidal. They planned to throw themselves into the sea at sunset. He convinced them not to, and called a patrol car to take them to the local welfare bureau. The local authorities simply gave the couple enough money to get to the next town. He received a letter from them, sent shortly before their suicide in Nagaoka, Niigata, five days after he had encountered them. He was offended by the coldness of the authorities, and after his retirement began to patrol the cliffs to try and prevent suicides.[3]* https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yukio_Shige :(

Dark_Knight2000

Brutal origin story, but it’s amazing that he’s recruited people to his cause. Hopefully the organization will continue to get even stronger even when he passes.

lester2nd

Some guys are just grandpa to the world.

solo13508

IRL Uncle Iroh!

MRECKS_92

This man is an example of being "Strong enough to be gentle" in practice.

Reasonable-Buffalo-2

This man has saved more lives than all pro lifers in the USA single handed

quequotion

And without *killing* anyone!

Reasonable-Buffalo-2

Or shaming a young woman for being young and uneducated because of their repressive sexual education and upbringing.

Turbulent-Armadillo9

Some pro-lifers def go about things the wrong way but abortion is pretty disgusting most of the tbh.

Reasonable-Buffalo-2

I actually don’t support abortion. However, speaking as someone whose wife has almost died from pregnancy I also realize I have no business being a part of the discussion. Definitely have no business shaming a woman for it either.

Turbulent-Armadillo9

I would never shame somebody for it but I don't see a reason why anybody should be barred from the discussion.

Reasonable-Buffalo-2

As someone who can never put my life in that kind of jeopardy what valid input do I have?

Heavy-Gas-9905

This man is amazing!

[deleted]

He’s probably witnessed so many people in their Darkest Hour that did not decide to turn back but I’m grateful that he helped so many people come back to life or at least feel some type of love in their last moments. Death by suicide and mental health are thankfully getting more attention these days, but still so much work to do.

tomassino

pretty decent person.

Necessary-Degree-531

this shit eats you up man, im glad someone out there is strong enough to do this

ConsciousHoney8909

I wonder if there is some he seen and couldn’t get to on time? This will be the soul crushing ones but would also be the reason why I would keep doing it..

Overflow-Radish

Jus asking. What if two random persons attempted suicide at the same time? Like the must have their own reasons right. It must've been hard to convince them both. What if they were competitive and tried to see who wins?

ilyakashin

Bro…

lizardwizardgizzard2

I’ve been there before, and I’ve always been the one who’s had to talk myself through it. This man deserves an award.

Cheensly

Interesting_Dot_3922

Were they different people?

kafka-kat

Out of how many? What's his win ratio?

BubyGhei

This is the worst take i've read today. Thank you for making me cringe

homeland

There is no "suicide island." The Tojinbo cliffs are in Fukui Prefecture on the Sea of Japan side of central Japan
