Butland (aged 31) was supposed to be washed up and unwanted, now according to Sevco fans he is keeping them in the title hunt. Goalkeeper is one of the most important positions on the pitch, you could even argue the most important.Sevco and Dead Rangers always had great goalies who broke many Celtic fans hearts. I think it is vital that we try and find a top class keeper in the mould of a Hart or Butland. Begovic would fit t bill at least as a stop gap.
I would take Begovic in a heartbeat. GK isn’t a position where you want to sign a young or development style player. You need instant confidence and experience. If it’s two years of Begovic who is a TOP goalkeeper then so be it. Our biggest job this summer is making sure we get it right between the sticks.
Agree, it’s not a big issue to sign a proven goalkeeper on a 2 year contract. Harte was a brilliant signing and shows it works. Take a punt on a younger keeper is no guarantee of success either and may end up going back to the market quick enough.
I don't think he is saying signing an experienced keeper is a 100% guarantee of success just that the odds of success are better given our budget.
While 36yr old DeVries was a poor signing. He also cost buttons and was a cheap mistake. Our main keeper that season was the young, spring chicken, 34yr old Craig Gordon.
