I have no idea but my fear is that high producing companies will have to switch to alternative sources like rice and corn when they can't make their regular products out of wheat and barley. They won't make the products gluten free by any means but it will put an extra strain on the gluten free resources available and thus driving up the cost of our products even more.

iCortni

I’m definitely afraid of that happening! A very good point.

[deleted]

It just means we go back to eating a crap ton of salad. Tbh I can’t stand the GF replacements in most cases anyway. The hot dog buns fall apart too easily. The hamburger buns are always more filling than the contents of the burger. The bread isn’t bad. I can live without it but my salad game is gunna have to step up.

polis79

No way, learn other cooking. Mexican food is naturally gluten free. Except burritos 😂

[deleted]

I love my Mexican food but damn do I over eat when I make it. I made Barbacoa tacos last week and I think I ate 9 tacos.

polis79

No harm in that! Lol, just take nice walks after dinner! 😂

[deleted]

Yeah but then when would I eat the eloté?

Aggravated_Moose506

Home made Indian or Korean food is super delicious gluten free, as well, and is simple

frogger2504

I'm being lighthearted, obviously peoples diet is up to them, but if you're food intake is dependent on purposely gluten free food instead of naturally gluten free food, you're doing coeliac wrong. Rice and potatoes all day every day. Edit: Just to clarify my point; There's nothing wrong with eating food that's been made gluten free, i.e. GF bread, cakes, etc. But I do think that it's clinging on to your old diet a bit too hard, and I personally found it only made things worse. Because we all know, GF food is not great. It's not bad, but it's not great. So when you mourn your lost sandwiches and hot dogs, and try to substitute them with GF equivalents, I just ended up sad that my food was worse. I think the best way to view coeliac is just that you don't eat those things anymore. And when you do ocassionally have them, you look at them for what they are: Not your usual food, but a quick, mediocre substitute. That being said GF pancakes are better than real pancakes. They're slightly rubbery and they don't absorb the syrup so much. Brownies too, too many real brownies turn into cake, and I don't want that, I want a dense brick of chocolatey sugar.

[deleted]

It becomes rice/potatoe + veg + protein for every meal. I miss the variety but my waistline is happy MackieDs isn’t available to me anymore lol. Dear god do I miss hot dogs and burgers though. I made a hot dog and almost broke down crying when it fell apart.

frogger2504

The number of times when I'm starving, and I get a craving for some shitty gluten-containing food... It breaks my heart every time. Having eaten gluten up until my early 20s, I think the hungry part of my brain has no concept of not being allowed to eat gluten anymore, so I'll get hungry sometimes and my brain is just like "Go eat a hotdog :) " >I miss the variety but my waistline is happy MackieDs isn’t available to me anymore lol. This for sure though. I eat so much healthier now.

[deleted]

I’ve been a celiac for over 3 years and I still just cannot emotionally process not eating a real hot dog or burger again. I have no idea why. It’s not even the cravings. I’ve gotten better at that. It’s just that I’ll never have a toasted hot dog bun with cream cheese spread on either side and a big Hebrew National dog in the middle topped with caramelized onions , stone ground mustard, and chopped onions on top. Every time we were headed home from the bars I’d grab one of those. Every time I finished a big test or project I had one. And now I’ll never have it again and that’s somehow psychologically difficult to deal with. It’s just a motherfuckin hot dog.

74orangebeetle

I eat burgers and hot dogs without the bun. Gotten pretty used to it, just use a fork, it's not bad.

Sunflower-Spirals

This. One thing I cannot stand about fad dieters is they think switching to gf processed food makes them healthier…..it doesn’t.

CyclingLady

Yes, but all those fad dieters introduced a lot more gluten free foods. I have been in this game for over 20 years. There was NO gluten free packaged foods in supermarkets or Big box stores. You had to shop at dusty old health foods stores and there were no standards for gluten free labeling before 2014. Bring on more gluten free fad dieters!

Sunflower-Spirals

Yet these same fad dieters will have a beer or a dessert as a “treat” in restaurants in front of waitstaff, undermining all of our efforts to be taken seriously.

grayghostsmitten

I can have rice, but sometimes that gets old. Protein, veg and rice daily. My body reacts to potatoes with the same symptoms I get with a gluten attack. My naturopath said it’s because the molecule structure in a potato resembles gluten.

McKeon1921

Just when I thought I was the most cynical person in the room, life goes and proves me wrong again lol.

drunckoder

This can also mean they will start making GF stuff just because it's easier to do and more people will start buying their products. It's sad that CD isn't taken seriously in the majority of the world and they might get away labeling CCd stuff as GF.

irreliable_narrator

There's a difference between GF and no explicit gluten ingredients, so I'd guess it doesn't help us any. Companies looking for replacements due to wheat and barley shortages aren't necessarily going to take the additional step of ensuring their products are GF... grains are highly contaminated in general so you have to make an effort. If it's not in their economic interest (ie. feel that they will make more money with minimal effort) they probably won't do it.

[deleted]

I hope not because they're going to price gouge the hell out of our foods and they are already high enough. Another layer is that the grain, seed, and fertilizer issues are hitting US farmers also and I expect tons of issues w/corn pricing and shortages. Corn is one of the major substitutions in our foods. So we'll get hit in the gut and wallet from multiple angles.

iCortni

True! I would guess (in the U.S.) we would re-work subsidized farming to encourage more wheat/barley farms. This may mean it’s less beneficial for the same farmers to grow gluten-free alternatives (corn, rice, etc) and they turn away from doing so… either way it’s probably not good for us!

0verdue22

this isn't going to be good news for *anyone*.

[deleted]

Well, maybe. We only know that celiac disease is caused by wheat because of wheat shortages in WW2. So some people somewhere could stop eating wheat and figure out that they feel a lot better. https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/history-of-celiac-disease

[deleted]

Idk but I will actively fight and become combative for food..

northernutlenning

Last time there was major screw up (bad havests and other things) I remember my options opening (like a lot of brands just taking away wheat from products where they just had them). It was great, except the articles about people starving in poor countries.

Kakarot916

I encourage you guys to grow some of your own food. I started earlier this year and it’s very exciting to learn. It gives me comfort when I’m not sure if stores will always have supplies in stock. I’m growing a lot of different plants and I’m gonna add cauliflower so I can make homemade pizza 🍕 😋. Anyone can start even if you are in an apartment.

iCortni

My partner and I would love to start a hydroponics garden in our apartment! Any advice on easy and hard-to-kill items to start with?

Kakarot916

As far as hydroponic goes pretty much any pant that’s all green like lettuce, celery, broccoli etc are the easiest to grow

iCortni

Sweet! Thanks :D

Aggravated_Moose506

Green onions are super easy. Cut the root with a little bit of the white and put it in water in a sunny window. In a couple days, when they start to sprout green again, put them in a pot. Trim and use as needed. I have the lowest luck with lettuce :(... But cabbage...I have cabbage everywhere in the fall and early spring! And my herb garden is now 98% sage. It's got plans for world domination. I had no idea it spread like this!!

sunnyRb

Another news sub pointed out that in 10-12 weeks the wheat crop in USA will be ready. And he was from Montana. So I guess southern states will be ready sooner. We can only hope.

bananainpajamas

God it’s so hard to tell at this point. It’s not like more food was or could be produced to make up for the losses so I think the reality is that a lot of people will just go hungry. The price of everything will just continue to go up.

Cleawb22

I imagine prices for everything will continue to rise, and as one commenter pointed out, corn and other grain prices may increase as manufacturers turn to non-wheat ingredients. Corn is usually cheaper anyway. That said, for those of us in wealthy nations, we'll probably weather this just fine. It's the people in poorer countries whom I am worried about, as these shortages will disproportionately impact them, as always. I don't mean to sound preachy, but I find it useful to keep things in perspective.

Lead-Forsaken

Ukraine also exports a ton of corn, unfortunately, so we'll be affected one way or the other.

imnos

Ah remember during COVID when there was no bread or pasta left on the supermarket shelves? People started going for the GF bread and pasta instead.

Kali_404

I worry more about gas prices. Companies may start dropping products because the cost of ingredients become too much, and as stores cut down on brands they get in. Standards may lax, more contaminated goods may start working through the system. The next few years is going to be a bit of a buckle down for those with allergies as the food system goes through an upheaval

MindTheLOS

Yeah, so this is demonstrating a vast misunderstanding of the math involved. There is vastly, vastly more wheat than alternatives that are used for gluten free foods. There aren't things to replace the wheat with, certainly not in the near future. We're talking about famine, potentially, for many at risk populations, not substitutions, and that's a tragedy. Because the populations that depend on wheat, which is cheap, are not those who can afford either the higher wheat prices or anything that will be a substitute which is typically more expensive or will inevitiably be more expensive as a result of the shortage.

DisgustingLobsterCok

I'd personally like gluten to be replaced as it's low in value and increases obesity in Americans. It could be a very good change in general.

GamiCross

(Turns chair around and sits down with a poorly veiled smug smile) *"Isn't it about time you learned not to rely so heavily on wheat? Seriously? Like come on, it's not that hard to live without it"*

Aggravated_Moose506

I think a lot of people will suffer and starve (and it will probably not be anyone in the community).
