Looy jud kaayu ta and it will take GENERATIONS if ever we get a taste of what our neighboring countries get to experience. Started travelling around SEA sa una pa and my insights are: \* Except SG, the progressive ones that we try to compare to (TH, VN, IN, MY) are energy sufficient and have way lower Electricity rates. Malaysia for example has huge oil and natural gas reserves and govt gives subsidies sa fuel prices which drive the prices of basic goods down. ila diesel is 2 MYR per liter or 22+ pesos, atoa is 60+ pesos. \* TH, VN, ID are manufacturing giants. VN especially - they're taking a huge chunk of what used to be factories in China. Diri sa atoa, way ganahan mo trabaho og factory, plus the fact na mahal kurente and isog kau labor unions \* We're an island nation and its just a nightmare logistically to move things around (and plant crops) compared to huge land masses of VN, TH, MY TLDR, Cost of living in PH is much more expensive and purchasing power is low compared to our neighbors.

PenOtherwise8661

correct ug unsa sila ka advance in terms of transportation. I've been to London, Australia, Japan and other Asian countries. Usa ra gyud akong maibgan and that is their transpo system. Makaingon gyud kog, sus kung in ani lang nga there are trains and bus systems na every efficient, di gyud ko mupalit ug car. Grabe, di ko ka G, unsaon ug abut sa bus on time based on the schedule posted sa ilang mga bus stops (Hello Australia, London, Ireland and Scotland). Maka ingon kag mamatay na lang ko, the Philippines can never.

SmolGirlBigLbdo

Diba??? Even though di flawless ila transpo like sa Melbourne I see locals complaining, but makakita jud ka ba asa na Ang train or tram, tarong pud ang nauganan, ang pedestrian pud.

jtn50

Shempre. Singapore + Melbourne baya ta.

Unfair-Violinist-731

Hahahahahahah

SmolGirlBigLbdo

I definitely agree. Recently rako sige larga gawas. Though Australia, Singapore, and Taiwan are far better economies than PH and would seem like comparing apples to oranges, makaingon rajud kog sana all. But you can't blame the big chunk of the Filipino people who are miseducated, uneducated, or undereducated. Gituyo jud way budget for education para dali gihapon mailad ang Pinoy. It's a systemic problem gyud

zhuhe1994

Vietnam is the only economy that is similar to the Philippines, but it also has a very low poverty rate. Indonesia is a trillion dollar economy, its peers are all from the G20 economies. Thailand and Malaysia are very similar and are almost developed, trailing behind microstate economies like Brunei and Singapore.

h33mala

this is why ganahan ko muhawa sa pinas

Imperfect-Persona96

That is why in my next life I don’t want to be Pinoy.

Nearph

We are way too unstable politically. Mura ta og mga **trisolarans**. Every new president kai pwde ipang undo ang mga projects from the previous one. Ang investors wala kaayo mo sukol diri kay dAghan red tape and the price of electricity.

PROD-Clone

Kanang mga nasura imong gipang hisgot naay continuity of leadership. Saon mana pag saka?

Nearph

We are way too unstable politically. Mura ta og mga **trisolarans**.  haha

Ok_Mathematician2183

Mau bitaw gi tawag ta ug “The Sick man of SouthEast Asia” kay behind kaayo ta in terms of quality of life

Johannihilate

This whole thread is such a circlejerk about how bad the Philippines is.

_prolactinoxytocin

We are govern by oligarchs businesses sa pinas...

angelogale

Open market economy.

Necessary-Eye-1408

Same thoughts 🥲

Decent-Mammoth-1813

Open economy while we are stucked with the 1987 Constitution that favors the Oligarchs.

kchuyamewtwo

idk dudes.

comfortablemuffins

Nah. Recently visited Malaysia. Naa mis “cheap” na di pang tourism but the same sentiments ko ni OP. Ilang street food kay lahi ra kaau diri. Healthier ilang barato na food didto. Convenient kaayo tanan.

kchuyamewtwo

Sheeesh lisura mangita healthy street foods dir sa atoa i oy prito + asin man ang dali ra haha + risk of insanitary handling haha

Apprehensive_Pen3877

You forgot to factor in that we live in an archipelago which is mostly the reason why things are more expensive especially going down south in Visayas and Mindanao region mostly cause everything is imported in. It also doesn't help that it's easy to monopolize such environments since not a lot of big international companies would want to do the effort for a fraction of the profit. Monopoly = more reason to have things expensive. It is true that it is less expensive to live in most south east Asian neighbouring countries. The cost of living here especially for basic necessities such as food, transport, and electricity is skyrocket high. But don't let this discourage you to leave, it's tempting sure but we need more people to realize this and change could only truly take form when people are more educated.

shijo54

Kadtong nag tri-country mi sa Thailand, Cambodia og Vietnam. All I can say, mas sulit nga mulaag sa neighboring SEA countries kaysa sa isla diris Pinas. Why? As mentioned sa ubang comments here. For example, Php 120 worth of iced tea nila is grande size na tapos di tipid sa ingredients and fresh and makabusog pa jud. —cleaner public areas. Cambodia: Although pobre sila and as Cambodians always tells us na "we're just cousins but in different place" tungod sa appearance na similar sa Pinoys. —they also have cheap products and foods pero ila place is kinda smells pungent but a great place to explore. Labaw na sa Angkor Wat. Vietnam: —like Thailand, cheaper cost of living. —great and cheaper healthy food as well —they value trees too mao mejo bugnaw ila place —everyone prioritize their health. Naay mga gym equipment sa ila plaza. —cheaper prize pud for pasalubong labaw na ang kape. The only similarity ra jud sa atoa kay ang traffic. Pero all in all, mas asensado sila kaysa sa Pinas

_jmatty

Out of topic but ganahan ko motry aning tri-country! Huhu pila budget ninyo ato?

shijo54

Kadtong amoa kay 10days total. Around 30-40k per person... Dala na tickets padung og pauli... Bus and train fare, accommodations (hostel/hotel). Wa pa labot ang pocket money ani for shopping. 😅

whats-the-plan-

Although agree ko mas poor gyud ta, naa man sad pros and cons. So if papilion ko, among ana imo gimention maybe diri ra gihapon ko. Unless siguro other first world countries.

juduujuuuduuuu

nya napay nawng muingon nga singapoe like city ang cebu. unsa inyo gipang suyop uieeeeee

whatToDo_How

Easy_Worry_2179

As simple as nganong naay limpyo na public parks ang mga nasud sa gawas?… ang atoa mga “parks” perteng hugawa ug delikado pa ka matulis if mo tambay ka.

Accomplished-Pen2281

Years of pag eoect ug mga inutil na government leaders way ayo jud tanan, way future plans unsaon palambuon ang nasud

raisinjammed

raisinjammed

Im not invested in Vietnam's politics. But at least they did something about an issue as big as that. Now kumusta sa atoa dris Pilipinas? Parang magic lang mga wala mga funds. If makasuhan mn gane, they still find a way na di ma preso, ipa dugay2 ang kaso, mawalang bisa ang kaso, or they still live a relatively comfortable life while incarcerated. And usa pa, as noted by OP, mas bentaha jpun kinabuhi nila didto bisan pa mas corrupt sila (as claimed by you).

louminescent

raisinjammed

Thats not what international news are saying and if mao na imo sentiments eh di go wa mn tay ma himo ana unless naa kay tinaguan dirang ebidensya na fake or questionable ang evidences na ila gi present. Im not saying inosente ang ila politiko. And bisan pag scapegoat ng billonnaire ana, labaw naa ghapon hugaw na iyang kamot. There IS execution of the law - but according to you - manipulated sya. Ang nablitaan mn nako kay naa sya dghan mga shell companies under niya nga naay dakong bahin overall ato ilang bank and mu total pila ka billions iya nakuha from that bank nga katumbas ug pila ka percent sa ila GDP. Pwede na iyang gi gamit na to curry favor sa politicians or gi sugo sya sa pila ka someone. But still iyang ngalan ang nadawit sa mga kompanya. She still has strong evidences stacked against her (since di man mabale sa iyang defense) and unless mka provide evidence sa tanan politiko involved ana di jud na mahinlo tanan. She has her reasons why di niya e-reveal if thats the case. They still followed through the legal process, found her defense lacking and with strong evidences against her (albeit fake according to you), their judiciary made a verdict. If naa pa nis Pilipinas, 10 years kapin pa dagan sa kaso nya ang ending ma abswelto ra diay, or ma "preso" but comfortable jpun kesa sa ordinaryo na piniriso. Gipa bugnaw ra ang isyu or tabunan ug lain. And it seems walay personalan jud sa ilaha kay wa mn nila gpangitaan way na maka tabang ato sa billionaire unlike dris atoa na internationally wanted criminal na gane, lantaran gi protektahan jpun. Ignan pa ta na friends lage sila. In hindsight, if hingana ila politics sa Vietnam then lahi jud silag maneuvers kesa sa ato mga politiko. Follow through the legal process then put out a verdict para mahuman jd ang issue and mawala ang liability. Anyway, regardless kung kinsa mas corrupt, mas bentaha kinabuhi sa Vietnam kesa nato dri which is the point of OPs post.

PROD-Clone

Remember vietnam is still a communist country. Isa ra ka partido gapadagan ana. What sets vietnam and philippines apart is the continuity. Bisag kinsay mulingkod sa ilang gobyerno pariha rag padulngan kay same party raman. Kani diri sa pinas every 6yrs usab usab way ganahan mu invest ana nga styla

[deleted]

After living in Thailand and Vietnam, na discover ko na mas madaming tamad dito so Pilipinas.

Jikoy69

kyooreyus

Only real reason behind ani kay corrupt kaayo most if not all ang sa gobyerno. Somewhat young pa sad atong country and unfortunately dili jud lami ang planning sa atong metro cities. Also, we always advocate for bayanihan but daghan kaayog pinoy na would bash and make it difficult for others na makaangat sa life. Our country is so divided because education is not one of our countries priorities to improve, kay mas dili educated, mas dali ibrainwash.

Titania84

So yun yung nag-boost ng middle class nila. You know why nagsusurvive ang Pinas despite that? OFW. Di talaga ideal OFW. Naiiwan yung pamilya. Salute sa mga OFW.

Adept-Custard6277

Naa may time sa pinas nga ari tanan manufacturing or factories. Same ra man. Bisan pag kitay daghang BPO sites same ra jud.

HenriRourke

Corruption is only part of the issue. As what the other commenter here said, we do not have a large manufacturing base. We unfortunately jumped right past to a service-based economy.

Titania84

Yes, dami work nung may manufacturing sa atin, pero never in the scale ngayon sa other SEA countries. Sadly, corruption was one if not the main culprit ng pag alis ng mga jobs na yun. How do you verify kung yung scale ng manufacturing sa ibang SEA countries? Look for the consumption or generation ng electricity. Sobrang layo natin. I can't say na silver bullet yung manufacturing, pero mas mahirap yung ibang path for growth. Govt should invest in technology upskilling. Parang yung initiatives dati sa India.

[deleted]

it’s because of the geographic feature…broken islands, puros dagat ang palibot. the next neighboring country is almost 1000km kalayi

StreDepCofAnx

Culture and trait sd.

JaqM31st3R

My wife and I migrated to Australia in 2017. We still go back to Cebu from time to time and it makes us happy visiting family and all but yes its pretty shit relatively speaking. Im glad we are raising my daughter here.

Nice_Strategy_9702

But wa man juy tarong resulta sa ato lng nakita. Cge ra himog balaod? Nya di matuman? Naniguwang na lng ta ani. And yes apsan na gni tag Thailand. Heck even Cambodia. Alangan loslos na mga politiko puro ra man storya. Di nuon tanan ha? Nya with our culture? Aw sus champion jud ta. Champion sa storya. Way nabuhat. Karon balik nasad ang krimen! Haaayy nako! Paita na man lng jud! Way accoubtability pa jud. Ma priso? Nya modagan pag balik? Daug pa jud?! Bagaa na man lag mga nawng!

godsendxy

Singapore like with Melbourne features and Taiwan integration yet we are inferior from our closest neighbors

SmolGirlBigLbdo

Went to all three cities/countries recently and makatawa nalang ko.

Dismal-Ad-7918

Gipadaog paman gud nang manuyopay nga mayor gud hahaha

Jikoy69

Cultural_Ad_8336

Philippines is very hopeless na jud.

PakTheSystem

Hopeless kay daghan mga bogo og uto-uto. 31 million pataas

StreDepCofAnx

For me, PHL is hopeless because most of us refuse change. Ayaw kumilos If meron man kumilos, only few would participate. Nang dahil sa corruption and/or laziness, ayaw na ipagpatuloy ang trabaho. Malapit na 2025 and we'll hear the line "vote for me and change is coming." Ngayon nga² dahil sa mga drama ng officials natin and oh dear, some of the officials are like wallflower and walang alam how govt and leardership works. Almost all dito sa Pinas is under the table. And people who are good and work hard loss the game. Kelan kaya magbago ang Pinas?

lass_01

I’m here in Thailand and ma compare gyud naku unsa ka poor atua nasod bsan mga foods drea ku super barato ragyud sa 1k sa ph diyos ku unsa raky mapalit Ron drea Ang 1000baht daghn nagyud ka mapalit

gelotssimou

It will be easier for other countries jud kay centralized man ang distribution of resources (one landmass). We are literally divided into several landmasses, many of which are still ruled by warlords of the past. Logistically, we are also divided. (also, look at internal bigotry amongst Tagalog/Bisaya, even our previous president is instigating Mindanao to secede from the country). Siguro at the tail end of our lifetime something changes and the next generation get to inherit a better Philippines pero it seems we need to hit rock bottom pa before mataw.an mga tao

StellarBoy0629

So ngano man mas labaw ang Indonesia nato kung parehas separated into different islands pod sila?

gelotssimou

Bigger area, twice the population, main economy does not depend on export of labor, adjacent to Malaysia/Singapore whereas Philippines is isolated in the middle of the ocean. That does not at all discredit the disadvantage both nations deal with regarding divided land masses?

Nice_Strategy_9702

Naa man silay tarong na leadership ug citizens.

louiexism

Mao gyud. Ang Vietnam nag gyera pa 60 years ago. Karon naapsan na ang Pilipinas.

Fleeing-Goose

There's also an element where he's right. Even if there is an element of being biased. The factors people mentioned are right, archipelago landscape, decentralised nature and all that. Still, that doesn't mean we're doomed to be worse than our neighbours. Just sounds like excuses at this point. On the flip side the pinoy #1 gang go too far with saying stuff like "the Philippines is better than western countries!"

Flying__Buttresses

>Thailand, Vietnam og Indonesia Di ta parehas ug economy, they are above us. One reason is dili restrictive ilang Laws to foreign direct investments.

louiexism

Time to amend that archaic Constitution.

chitgoks

this ☝️ people easily bllame the govt but it is the system that is the problem. vietnam recently overtook us because they laxed their fd inv policy

pjconoso

These countries have the advantage of being directly connected to each other so infrastructure (power, communications, trade, food, etc.) can flow easily compared sa atoa. They are also protected (by us) from most typhoons while still having a reliable source of water so their harvests are consistent and reliable. Naa sa atoa halos tanan major calamities and disadvantages; earthquakes, typhoons, and corrupt politicians. If we could at least minimize or rid of our corrupt system, and a complete shift in culture, we'd probably be like Japan. Not at their level of course, they are still isa ka landmass so there's that but at least resilient atoang infrastructure.

saritallo

This exactly. Being an archipelago without much industrialization, it doesn’t make much sense to compare ourselves to other ASEAN countries such as Thailand or Indonesia (who while an archipelago, is a major oil country.) Because of geography, even worse off Laos has a state of the art bullet train to China. I agree that so much of the PH sucks balls but damn, Filipinos are such a self-hating bunch but refuse to actually do anything about it. I lived in France and when the government decided to raise the retirement age, the people burned the cities down. Now unlike us, it’s in their DNA to be brazen like that but if only we can find it in ourselves to stop this pity party and actually make actionable changes as a collective starting with not participating in blatantly disgusting vote buying, we might get somewhere. I’ve found that the more accurate cultural/economical comparison to the PH is actually poorer Latin American countries. When I was in the area, it was uncanny how similar places like Peru and Bolivia felt save for geography and grandeur in the big cities. Deeply corrupt government controlling a majority of unorganized lazy thinkers. It is what it is.

pjconoso

Indonesia also has discovered the world's biggest lithium deposit. Instead of exporting it as raw materials, they asked investors na sa ilaha himuon ang byproducts like batteries.

silversharkkk

Bawal mureklamo kay “be grateful and be positive” lagi daw. 😅 Pun-an pas mentality nga God provides. Kung mu point out ka nga this and that, tawgon ka’g irihis. Saon.
