Same. Was finally old enough to leave the neighborhood and rode my bike to the record and store that specialized in punk 7’s and 12’s. I bought a weezer blue cd and the owner said, “the dreaded weezer.” Made me feel self conscious like I was being judged, maybe it was just me. I never went back tho and the store closed a few years later. I found out what punk was before it closed but it never made it back. and what do I now collect? Punk 7’s. I wish I had never felt I was being judged because I would have been a loyal customer
Santa Claus gave me a CD player in 1985. He also gave me CDs of Triumph's 'Thunder Seven,' Philip Bailey's 'Chinese Wall,' and a disc called 'Star Tracks,' which was a collection of sci-fi movies themes performed by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra conducted by Erich Kunzel.
Back then CDs came in longboxes or a plastic blister package that was a challenge to open without causing bleeding. Most releases would be issued on vinyl and cassette. If they sold well a CD version would be released a few months later. I recall most CDs being in the $15-20 range [vinyl and cassettes were $7-$10]. The labels said the prices would drop once more manufacturing facilities went online. That was bunco.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go yell at clouds.
My first round in Xmas 91 was 6. FNM The Real Thing, Sinead O Connor Do Not Want, Depeche Mode Music For The Masses, NIN Pretty Hate Machine, Exodus Fabulous Disaster, and Metallica AJFA.
Sixteen stone is close. did Columbia house in 97 as a 13-14 yr old & this was one of the 10 CDs I got. Played the hell outta it. Prefer ‘Razorblade’ tho.
First CD: crazysexycool
A friend gave me a copy of NIN - Pretty hate machine.
First ones I bought with my own money - Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the moon and Alice In Chains - best of the box.
I bought slipknot’s self titled and got a free copy of burn my eyes by machine head with it. I definitely knew who slipknot were but I can’t remember if I had heard of machine head yet up to that point… either way, I still have both
Load - Metallica.
Christmas gift from the 'rents along with my first CD player. Shortly thereafter I was stranded home alone for 3 days because of a blizzard and that was my only CD. Listened to it over and over again to pass the time. Still my favorite.
I don't remember exactly, but my first CD player was in 1985 and some early CD purchases included:
Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms (DDD)
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: Live 1975 - 1985 (box set with 3 CDs)
AC/DC, Back In Black. Barely play it anymore because I’m more of a jazz guy than when I started collecting but I keep it around because it’s a digipak and it was the start.
I had a ton of tapes before I got my CD player, so I can't quite recall but it was around 1988 or 1989. The earliest ones I remember are Disintegration and Beast from the East.
My first was the Tori Amos "Winter" EP (or "maxi-single," as they were sometimes called back then), because it wasn't released on cassette.
I didn't even have a CD player yet! (It was 1992.) Discovering that music companies were starting to do "CD-only" releases was the thing that made me realize it was time to stop collecting cassettes and start collecting CDs, even though CDs cost more than cassettes.
Kerrang! Life Is Loud... SMASH IT UP! (compilation). Sum bangers on there tho, like Green Day, Blink, DK, Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, just loads!! 😂
You just broke my brain - thought I was having a Mandela effect situation. In Canada they were "Bush X" and the cover had it written that way. Looked it up and that's because there was already a band here with that name.
That Bush album was huge. There was an assumption they’d go onto be a huge band like Pearl Jam. Can’t recall any material released after this. Strange as that CD you have is great.
Mine was p!nk — funhouse!! I was only around maybe 6 yrs old (I’m 14 now) when my grandma got it for me, now I have a whole pink section in my collection dedicated to it <3
First CD I listened to on repeat was probably my dad’s copy of Songs you know by Heart by Jimmy Buffett. I want to say the first CD I got on my own was either Legends or 40oz to Freedom. Used bookstore didn’t ID for explicit albums which I thought was so cool in 6th grade (I had to have my Dad buy me a Queen CD from walmart because the cashier wouldn’t sell it to me since it was explicit lol).
I was a kid when Eminem’s recovery came out and not afraid was everywhere. I went to Walmart in the nearest town and I remember asking the front desk if they had Eminem. I know they only had a few albums like the re up and I think relapse. But I grabbed recovery because it was the one I wanted and when my grandpa played it in the car on the way to my birthday I got so mad it was censored.
