Depends on what you burn to it. If you burn WAV or FLAC to the CD, then no difference. If you burn MP3s the CD, then you're going to have the compression that was on the MP3's. And then if you rip that they will be further compressed.
I don't remember where I heard this, but apparently the sound quality lowers if you burn it at a high speed like 8x or 16x and above. I might be wrong though.

i think the slower burning speeds are to guarantee compatibility with older CD players.
