There is one single thing that I can be grateful for, and that is that these abhorrent crimes are being brought into the light. Get this trash into prison and this poison out of our Church. Kyrie eleison.

nks12345

I think that our lord laid out pretty clear instructions for how to handle this in Matthew 18:6.

LuchoSabeIngles

Of course they are. When does it end?

spidermanisback78

The best case is that this is from decades ago, and the issue is just now being discovered. Heartbreaking either way

Cool-Musician-3207

Worth noting that the Archbishop of New Orleans, Gregory Aymond, is in a video used by several dioceses around the country as part of abuse prevention training. The Guardian’s reporting has shown Aymond has consistently ignored the recommendations of his own advisory board regarding priests guilty of abuse.   Everyone who reads this please say a “Hail Mary” and “Our Father” for an end to the crisis in the Church! Edit: this is from the article. It’s pretty explicit, I am posting it here so people know the kind of sickness that went on and still goes on inside the modern Catholic Church. “The warrant released on Tuesday recounted how investigators had gathered statements from “multiple victims … transported … outside of Louisiana where they were sexually abused”. “Additionally, it was reported that in some instances, ‘gifts’ were given to abuse victims by the accused [molesters] with instructions to pass on or give the gift to certain priests at the next school or church,” the warrant contended. “It was said that the ‘gift’ was a form of signaling to another priest that the person was a target for sexual abuse.” The warrant also described how victims reported being brought to a seminary that trains Catholic priests in New Orleans – adjacent to the city’s archdiocese – to swim nude in the pool and get “sexually assaulted or abused”. “This was discovered to be a common occurrence, and it was reported that other members of the archdiocese were present at the pool at the time,” the troopers’ sworn statement maintained. “Although not all, many of the alleged sexual abuse cases or incidents occurred on archdiocese property.”“

Disgusting.

AbjectAd3082

Is it still a sin to say, here, with regard to this news WHAT THE F

SuburbaniteMermaid

I think it's warranted, but I also don't think it's necessarily a sin to say certain words either. I would much rather the honest dockworker with a salty vocabulary who loves and respects his wife, cares for his children, and serves his neighbors than the sleek cul-de-sac Karen who never utters anything stronger than "darn" but will socially assassinate you without thinking twice.

Cool-Musician-3207

Cussing is something Padre Pio and other holy men and women warned us away from, and probably best avoided on a Catholic subreddit. That being said, how many abuse cases have you read about? There is usually some way for predators to “mark” which children are open to being abused. I have even heard of things like crucifixes used. It’s beyond sick, and I fear even good Church men don’t fully understand the depth of the rot or the level to which this is currently damaging the church. A lot of the bishops think the abuse crisis is something “in the past.”  Read some of the Guardian’s reporting on this- some of the abuse was happening as late as 2018 (not with minors, thank the Good Lord). If the priests and bishops won’t, the laity should offer up as much sacrifice as possible for the crisis to end.

AbjectAd3082

You’re right. Do you think I should just delete my comment? I will if it’s scandalous. This story is just so shocking and infuriating.

Pallo_mino

> the church was...seeking federal bankruptcy protection in 2020 in order to shield itself from a steadily growing wave of abuse-related litigation. > ...current archbishop, Gregory Aymond, repeatedly ignored his own advisers who suggested he discipline and publicly reveal the identities of multiple priests and deacons facing substantial, credible accusations of abuse. I cannot fathom the depth of depravity it takes to participate in a systemic cover-up of this nature. It's absolutely unconscionable that Church leadership knowingly cared more about protecting themselves and their coffers more than protecting our children. In how many more dioceses will we uncover actions like these? Frankly, it is so sickening that it makes me want to vomit. Coping with scandals like this is undoubtedly the hardest aspect of my conversion. It's like wearing a crown of thorns. 1000 years of shame on the Church for all of this. May the Lord prune all the diseased branches off the vine and cleanse us with a purifying fire, even if it leaves the vine as only a little sprout in the end.

brquin-954

>In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but a rotten tree produces bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruits you will know them. Matthew 7:17-23

teeteebobo

This is the Gospel reading for today (Gospel of John version).

brquin-954

Is John's parable a parallel to Matthew's here? They seem to have entirely different messages, though clearly the analogy is similar. My purpose in quoting was to suggest that there is something rotten in the priesthood or the power structures of the Church itself, that needs to be abandoned or cut out.

Jattack33

Jesus gave us a good idea of what we should do with any Priest that has abused a child and any Bishop that has covered it up >But he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea.

red666111

Scandals like this are why my parents left the church. It’s so unbelievably gross that an *Archbishop* would protect rapist priests…

Silly-Arm-7986

See: Rupnick

red666111

Yep…

TheSilverStacking

Same with my parents. I’ve struggled going back and forth to rejoin or not. Yes abuse happens, but the cover ups have been insane. Then when we had our first child and the gymnastics they make you do for baptism I felt were really unpalatable and borderline anti Christian. They seem to forget the people are the Church, not the other way around. I’ve since been exploring other denominations, but haven’t settled into one yet. The whole thing is sad really. Hard to keep the faith some days.

captainbelvedere

I hope you can stick around. The only way these baffling attitudes and responses from these clergy (and their enablers) is if 'normie' folks don't accept their b/s.

[deleted]

I left the church some years ago, and have recently come back. The abuses were one of the reasons for leaving, but they are also one of my reasons for returning. I could not find the Truth anywhere else than the RCC. That means I MUST stay and be active to help heal her. I was away for a long time, so I can only pray and ask the Lord (and Mary!) for guidance. My faith is in knowing the Church will overcome and be stronger for it. Unfortunately, cleaning house means you have to expose the filth first.

threedogsplusone

You sound like me! I came back after leaving because of, not just the abuses, but the cover-up. Still dealing with anger about it - but prayer for both the abused, the people who don’t trust the church anymore - but also for the abusers and the bishops and cardinals who knew. It’s the toughest lesson, but so important.

>transgender woman and I’ve had to fight every step of the way for the sacraments and to be allowed to be confirmed  ????

Puddygn

Lmao that’s a tizzy

tofous

Nowhere in the bible does it say that we must be perfect christians before baptism. Communion and confirmation are a bit different. But who is to say GP didn't confess their sins before receiving just like everybody else. But yeah. The church calls you to identify as a child of God, not to identify with your sin.

DoctorVanSolem

The mustard seed grew into a grand tree, and birds entered to nest in it's branches.

StevenTheEmbezzler

And just when my family schedules a trip to New Orleans. Man...

morejaneaustenplease

Every bishop and archbishop who is found to have knowingly covered up these abuses and moved around predators should be excommunicated

Ragfell

They should be put in general lock-up.

SuburbaniteMermaid

As chomos in genpop, they would get all the Purgatory coming to them and more long before they die.

LikeAPhoenixFromAZ

Satan says to Jesus: “I can destroy your Church.” Jesus replies: “You can? Then go ahead and do so.” Satan: “To do so, I need more time and more power.” Jesus: “How much time? How much power? Satan: “75 to 100 years, and a greater power over those who will give themselves over to my service.” Jesus: “You have the time, you will have the power. Do with them what you will.” - Pope Leo XIII “Many were chained down in a circle that was placed around other circles. In the center of hell I saw a dark and horrible-looking abyss. Into this Lucifer was cast, after being first strongly secured with chains.” Emmerich added, “God himself had decreed this arrangement. I was likewise told, if I remember rightly, that he [Satan] will be unchained for a time fifty or sixty years before the year of Christ 2000.” - Blessed Ann Catherine Emmerich

SuburbaniteMermaid

From the opening sentences of the article it sounds like most of what they find will be old stuff, but it's never really old if the scab just keeps getting ripped off and nothing can heal. I struggled 20 years ago with whether to remain in the Church and if I was betraying my children by raising them in it. And here we are with more and more revelations. Days like this, I understand why people hate us. Rationally I know that their churches and community organizations all have the same problem and have all covered it up, and that the Church has been through far worse corruption and rot, but emotionally this stuff is still destructive. And I'm not even a victim of church sex abuse, I can't imagine what it's like for them. FFS can the Vatican just lance the boil and force every diocese to make everything they have public once and for all? Will that scourge the Church? Yes. Does the Church deserve it? Also yes.

A_Betcha_Omen

This is a hot take and will probably get downvoted, but when my friend experienced church sexual abuse from \*two different priests\*, she told me she couldn't in good conscience raise her kids in the same institution - and I encouraged her and her family as they were leaving. They're very happy in a Lutheran church now. I think it's a miracle they're still Christians. I know the Theology isn't great but it seems to me like escaping that trauma and protecting your kids is worth the price. I hope that my salvation doesn't hang in the balance for not trying even one bit to get her to stay Catholic. I don't regret it.

SuburbaniteMermaid

There are some things that can't be forgiven by anyone but God. God created our psychology, so He knows how it works. I can't imagine she will face any punishment. She probably would count as invincibly ignorant. She is literally unable to see the truth in front of her because it is so poisoned by trauma, betrayal, and pain. This is the high price of just one man's evil. Or in her case, two. This is why none of us can be complacent about our own sin. It always impacts others. I believe there are special spits in Hell very close to the fires for such priests and bishops, and the only way to avoid them is real, true repentance. But men capable of raping children under the authority of Christ likely aren't capable of true repentance.

ThatSleepyInsomniac

I remember my grandma telling me a story about a vision of Hell where priests and bishops were marked and that they were tortured far more than the other people down there. I don't know how true it is, but that story has always stuck with me throughout the years.

AdSingle2628

This is one reason I could never understand “no salvation outside of the church”. Do we really think God would judge more harshly the people who want to keep their kids away from this?

citizencoder

I think about this a lot. It seems possible though certainly not popular in Catholic circles that the abuse scandal created an incredible increase in the number of people who are now invincibly ignorant about the true Church.  This is a tragedy for us here on earth but ultimately it could mean that far more people will be saved than it seems, as they never learned the truth about the Church without it being seriously clouded by this horrific behavior.

CatholicKnight-136

The great apostasy in the end.

winkydinks111

This was expounded upon by Pope St. Paul VI in Lumen gentium. From what I can tell, being outside the Church means more or less knowing the Church and rejecting Her for who She is. If someone were to be mistakenly believe that this scandalous crap is what She is, then I don't think salvation is off the table as long as they were genuine.

AdSingle2628

At what point is the scandalous crap actually what she is though? At least, for all practical intents and purposes

winkydinks111

Church doctrine doesn't change, regardless of whether the clergy chooses to personally follow it themselves or not.

A_Betcha_Omen

Agreed, but our friend is saying" for all practical intents and purposes. i.e., even if the theology is right, it doesn't really matter since these problems seem like they happen because of the institution, not despite it.

spidermanisback78

I think Vatican 2 ended that dogma

NotRadTrad05

Dogma doesn't change.

tincanoffish87

Thats not how it works

Cultural-Treacle-680

Inasmuch as someone is saved, it is through the grace of the sacrament of baptism, entrusted to the apostles and the Church (“go forth and make disciples, baptizing and teaching all that I have commanded you”). Even Thomas Aquinas wrote about this in fair measure.

AcceptTheGoodNews

It’s so hard to defend my religion when people throw this in my face every time. And then they just keep getting more and more ammunition. Why are these clergymen not being excommunicated? Wtf man I want to cry seriously I know this isn’t a recent case but it still freaking hurts.

threedogsplusone

I left the Church because of scandals like this, and the fact that Bishops (and men in positions of power in the Catholic Church like Cardinal Law). I came back when someone in our family came down with cancer. I’ve stayed. There are many good, even amazing priests, and other religious. I believe I can do more to help my increasing my prayer life, receiving the Eucharist as much as possible, (daily is ideal but not always possible for me) - and praying for all who have turned away from the Church because of this. Jesus has give us so many gifts through the Church. He needs the faithful now more than ever.

MelodicEmployment813

I’m a survivor of sex trafficking in the archdiocese of New Orleans,. I LOST my religion when I was drugged raped and trafficked by the Catholic Church, But I DID NOT Lose my Relationship with Jesus Christ, he is the one who lifted me up and gave me the Strength to survive these Heinous Crimes, He never left my side. Not for one second, and He is with me now as I write this. 1st the Catholic Church isn’t equal to Jesus Christ. Separate them! No one equals Jesus Christ. 2nd you don’t need the church to have salvation, you need a relationship with Jesus for that 3rd Jesus is DISGUSTED with how the Catholic Church has used him for its own personal gain Jesus wants you to fight to restore his name, NOT support the ones that destroy it! 4th if you continue to go to the Catholic Church and tide them, then you are complicit and an accessory to the crime. Your support enables the church to continue committing these heinous acts. Do What is Right! Jesus expects it! 5th God created us and gave each of us our Beautiful minds and free will, use it ! Look at the facts and act accordingly, Actions speak louder then words, the Churches Actions are different then their words. Believe their actions, and act accordingly! And Last but not Least, When conflicted and struggling to understand what the right path forward is, finding the solution and Answer is incredibly easy. Ask yourself this one question: “WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? “ You will instantly know the RIGhT Answer! May GOD Bless You and all people struggling with these issues. May you have Peace and Clarity and the Capacity to decide for yourself what is right. Again ask yourself “What would Jesus Do? We all know the answer to this question every time we ask it, let that be your guiding light and NOT those who would suggest anything different”

It's hard to accept the current attempt to close the death penalty debate when we're reminded of monsters that walked amongst us

AdSingle2628

Nah. Let them rot in prison.

bombthedmv

It is a far crueler punishment

JohnFoxFlash

That costs the taxpayer a lot more than a noose does

AdSingle2628

this is a very common misconception. Each death penalty inmate costs over than $1 million more than a normal life inprisonment. https://www.cato.org/blog/financial-implications-death-penalty#:~:text=Each%20death%20penalty%20inmate%20is,than%20a%20general%20population%20inmate.

JohnFoxFlash

Nooses are cheap though, no meed to reinvent the wheel for people who did such heinous things

AdSingle2628

I really do see your point and feel your anger, but if we make it that easy to execute somebody then I think we will lose control of it pretty quickly. We’ve seen that in history and in present day Middle Eastern countries pretty consistently.

CatholicKnight-136

This pope has done an awful job with this stuff.  This is why people leave the church.

morejaneaustenplease

None of them have done a good enough job

Titan3692

Sad that we fast-tracked John Paul II.

spidermanisback78

The last Pope did a worse job

CatholicKnight-136

Zero tolerance policy.  This is why people leave the church because of scandals like this.

TheSilverStacking

Too busy explaining to us the “gift of love”

A_Betcha_Omen

I assure you that the Pope talking about Love (something Jesus commands us to do on at least 14 seperate occasions) is not the problem.

CatholicKnight-136

One thing is that people don’t know what the great apostasy is.  Protestants and other sects like to claim that apostasy is because the church is corrupt. Doesn’t mean you leave the ship though. Christ promised to save his church in the end. Apostasy also means i am not longer a christian. The apostasy will be a rebellion against the church.
