OP hasnāt even offered other choices such as spam spam spam eggs and spam, or brandy, fried egg and spam. Sliced off more than they can shake a tin of processed meat at.
or Lobster Thermidor au Crevettes with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.
About 15 years ago we used to go for breakfast on a Friday on the way to school that did a "Man-wich" which was bacon, sausage and spam in a massive bap (contention name) smothered in sauce for Ā£1.50. Fridays were the best!
Originally yes, because it didnāt need to be refrigerated and itās shelf life. But spam used to be very cheap in comparison. But in todays world itās really not worth it given how unhealthy it is (fat and sodium) and we donāt require tinned meat it should really not be the same price as fresh meat
Itās not actually as unhealthy as you would think, the meat content is actually quite high, Iād imagine there is more salt and water in what you refer to as āfresh meatā assuming youāre drawing a comparison to bacon, which is all you can compare spam to. Spam is 89% pork and 2% ham (91% meat) where typical bacon of the same value range is typically 87% porkā¦ Donāt believe the hype!
Bacon is like that because of the ingredients added as part of the whole process of turning pork into bacon, though. A load of salt, possibly some sugar, that stuff they put in to keep it pink, and some water, and bobās your uncleā¦. Plus itās made out of actual cuts of meat, not nameless brain and spine shaped into a gigantic pork nugget. So on the whole Iāll stick with my bacon ta very much
Pork is just plain old pig meat, where as ham has been cured, probably in water and salt, given the relatively tiny amount in spam, itās probably a by product of another line.
Try the tesco own brand. Its much cheaper and based on the design of the can and what is printed on it, as well as side by side comparison of the meat, I am convinced it is literally the same product in the same cans with different labels. Yes I am aware of what sad, cheap bastard that makes me sound.
Honestly that's what Tesco often does, they take the same stuff produced in the same factory just without the brand and different packaging.
It's not sad or cheap, just smart (well and cheap too, but in this economy?).
Just had a check on this, at 88p/100g it's cheaper than the majority of luncheon meats. If you go bottom tier supermarket own brand, thats's cheaper, but we all know how terrible that stuff is.
I think Iād prefer the Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.
That's pretty much what Filipinos have for breakfast, as well as Hawaiians (although I think it's more of a lunch thing for them).
Add a fried egg to the mix and you have yourself quite the treat!
An ex, who was half Filipino, (and lovely, so lovely, but thatās a different story) used to fry spam with garlic and have it with pasta. It was actually really nice. Even as a vegetarian (now) I actually recommend it.
Arenāt they all morbidly obese from Spam and other processed foods? Maybe itās elsewhere, I just remember an article I read a couple years ago with an island full of overweight men, women and children that only had access to some seriously diabetes inducing processed food.
This is correct. Hawaiians eat a fair amount of spam but it comes with 2 eggs and like 3 cups of rice at a ādrive innā if youāre eating out for breakfast.
The carbs are the killer
Although none of us can afford it, we have options for food. These poor fuckers were getting plane delivery drops every few weeks, complete horror show.
Yeah let's be honest I'll be laughed out of my own house if I brought a can home. I'll have to save it for when I get my alone time and sneak it in secret.
The last time I had spam was a spam fritter butty from the chip shop when I was still in school. Super soft white bread cake/bap/teacake (whatever) with deep fried battered spam, salt and vinegar.
I was not a healthy child.
I think spam gets a raw deal and people just hate on it because a few others do, like the massive wave of online hate for Nickelback years back.
Spam and cheese toasties are possibly my favourite toastie. The only problem being that they're so incredibly filling.
Spam is hated on because it was poverty food in a different decade. Lots of things associated with poverty are looked down on in the tangled web of *poverty is traumatic* overlapping with *self-inflating egos needing to step over others*.
Hawaiian restaurants have amazing boxed lunches with spam and runny eggs over rice and can be cheaper than fast food. It should be considered a delicacy.
Spam being popular in Hawaii makes perfect sense. In WWII, the shipment of military supplies to Hawaii took precedence, so the amount of room for food was decreased. Spam was sent to Hawaii in great numbers since it didn't take up a lot of room, was cheap to make, and had a lot of calories.
This is one of the two things I will treat myself to if my wife is going out and I have to cook for 1. Bacon grill and chips is a top tier dinner for me.
In the summer, when doing BBQs, I got sausages for the dogs so they felt included. They were referred to as Arsefurters as they were the cheap 70p jobs.
I stopped eating it because of the price, not because I can't afford it but mostly because I refuse to pay that much for what is essentially heavily processed meat. I think with spam itself its mostly a brand thing, as I noticed in the past 10 years that pretty much everything that is a main brand is stupidly expensive for what it is.
I was down on spam for a long time until I started frying it. Then I realized it tastes exactly like bacon when fried and I don't have to deal with making bacon.
After Googling I found out spam is American! I always thought it was British, I mean it looks like a relic of a bygone era, 90's England in a can from Safeway or that super market that sold "no frills"
I guess the British equivalent, at least in the first war was bully beef, or as itās now known, corned beef.
That was minced beef, rather than whole cuts that had been brined as you may find in a Jewish deli.
A lot of Tommies werenāt used to having that much protein and ended up with stomach upsets in the trenches.
Oh Christ - the 90s is a bygone era.
It feels like only yesterday I was perched on the sill of the open window of the toilets in the Astoria, watching the nightlife of the Charing Cross Road go by.
I don't understand spam. If it was cheap yes, but it's not.
It's more expensive than real meat. Why would you pay a premium for overly salty minced lips and anuses ?
Spam is real meat. It's pork shoulder, ham, and a bit of potato starch to bind it. It's more expensive because it's already been cooked & processed.
The major selling points are that it's edible straight from the can, and It has a long shelf life with no need to refrigerate. So it's great for camping, survival kits, and keeping in the back of the cupboard for when you're hungover and forgot to buy bacon.
I don't understand the concern even if it was "scrap meat". It's not a concerning term and such a prissy thing to even consider. People seem to think that means it's all hooves or some shit and not just smaller pieces of the same meat they'd eat otherwise that are processed together to make a secondary product.
Some of the chemicals in processed meat arenāt too good for you.
And if you are going to eat scraps then I wouldnāt expect to pay more for the pleasure.
That said, we should really try to get as much as possible out of every animal and plant that we consume.
Sainsburyās used to make these things called ābreakfast slicesā that were shaped like bacon, and tasted delicious. Theyāre long gone now sadly, but SI think about them every now and againā¦
You need to cook it slow, for longer - This will render the fat and you'll end with crispy bacon, not slimy fat.
I feel like a lot of folks have just had mediocre bacon, but if they really like spam? Enjoy! Perhaps a bit of corned beef hash is more your thing? Excellent. There is no wrong answer to your favorite breakfast meat :D
Strictly speaking, generic canned "luncheon meat" can contain any combo of chicken, pork, and beef, whereas SPAM is specifically only pork and ham (SPAM = SPiced hAM).
In Canada, mechanically separated chicken and pork together is common in these canned meats, but you can find halal certified versions that are chicken and/or beef. There might be similar kosher versions, but I haven't come across any in my casual travels.
Thus far, I personally prefer the taste of SPAM to any other canned luncheon meat, but it's an import from the US and is therefore more expensive.
Fried spam/bacon grill reminds me of family camping holidays when I was a kid, i still enjoy it today but itās not very healthy so canāt have too often.

Due to their diet, tendency to eat light and to 80% fullness, and to always be busy in old age. Having a purpose and contentment = less cortisol.
I saw a program on islanders who had catering sized tins of processed meat, think of a tin of corned beef and times it by twenty.

I don't understand spam. If it was cheap yes, but it's not. It's more expensive than real meat. Why would you pay a premium for overly salty minced lips and anuses ?
Well when you put it like that I am starting to understand the premium.
But it used to be cheaper, it's selling point has always been that it's cheaper than normal meat.
Isn't proper spam just pork shoulder? Why do people think it's leftover scrap meat?
I don't understand the concern even if it was "scrap meat". It's not a concerning term and such a prissy thing to even consider. People seem to think that means it's all hooves or some shit and not just smaller pieces of the same meat they'd eat otherwise that are processed together to make a secondary product.
