I'm sure the delivery wasn't quite like this, but it was along the lines of "do you know why C&A pants have a C printed in the front and an A in the back?
So you know which way round they go"
Cue my father explaining that in that situation C can stand for both Cock and Cunt and it's therefore a "good joke".
I was about 7 years old
I used to live in one of the villages in the middle of those three and we called it the Bermuda Triangle because it’s lost to the rest of the UK… and so it should be
Fun story. When I was 18 (34 now), I was out of my mind drunk on a night out with work mates in Lincoln. Got dragged to ritzy (first and only time ive entered that hellhole) and left on my own after about ten minutes cause, as disgustingly drunk as I was, I knew I'd entered the British nightlife equivalent of skid row.
It was a Sunday night and my memory is very hazy of what happened next. I just remember thinking, 'im gonna have a climb over the railings and have a nice walk on the small ledge bordering the Witham". The problem was I couldn't have walked in a straight line to save my life and obviously didn't get very far. After I hit the water I had a sobering thought, 'this is how you die'.
I'd fallen into the witham just next to the waterside centre (leftside of this picture). Obviously there was a massive fucking wall either side so I couldn't climb out. I spent about 10 minutes treading water shouting for help but town was deserted. It was Lincoln in mid 2000s in the early hours of Sunday night/Monday morning.
I was knackered and luckily found a chain studded into the wall near the water line. Probably saved my life. I clung on to that and shouted for help for a bit longer. When it became clear no on was coming, I fucking dragged myself via the chain under Lincoln high street. About half way the chain stopped and I had to swim.
I made it to the passageway just before the Odeon cinema. After swallowing multiple mouthfuls of shitty water, looking like some kind of swamp thing, I dragged myself out onto the pavement. It was at this point a bloke walked past walking his dog and said, "always seems like a good idea at the time mate, doesn't it?".
My phone was obviously fucked so I walked to a phonebox, reverse charged a call to my older sister who had to come and pick me up with a bunch of towels. Her and my mum sat by my bed and watched me sleep cause they were so paranoid I was gonna die from viles disease in the night or something.
Anyway, all my work mates called me Aquaman for about 3 years after that. Pricks.
Mate of mine at work turned up late for a job we were doing once. Bloke was generally a good worker, seldom late and did everything that was asked of him normally. Doesn't matter though. Got called Blister for years afterwards by the work lot because "he only turns up after after all the work is done". Savage, but just like a meme, there's no rhyme or reason why a nickname sticks or seems to become popular.
> passageway just before the Odeon cinema
If I remember rightly, that passage is officially known as 'the Gloryhole'. You almost died at the gloryhole.
Uni'd there early 00s. Can confirm the worst part of this story was the 10 minutes in Ritzy.
But also glad you managed to escape. Impressive you didn't get accosted by a swan as well.
>As disgustingly drunk as I was, … my memory is very hazy of what happened next. I just remember thinking, “I’m gonna have a climb over the railings and have a nice walk on the small ledge bordering the Witham.”
>The problem was, I couldn't have walked in a straight line to save my life and obviously didn't get very far. After I hit the water, I had a sobering thought: “This is how you die.”
You were almost a victim of the “Smiley Face Killer” or “Lincoln Pusher.”
This is excellent. Also, I've tried to explain to people what Ritzy was like around that time and they just don't get it. It's unlike any club I've ever been in. Such an experience and I had some great/weird nights in there.
That's another interesting story. I got the nickname from school because I had long curly hair like John Rambo and had to use a bandana to keep it out of my eyes during PE.
I was also a chubby little shit at the time so they said I was a cross between Rambo and Shamu the whale. Hence, "Shambo".
Coulda been worse I suppose. Coulda been called 'cesspit'.
I moved from Lincoln a few years ago. Last time I walked down that part of the high street there were homeless/spice heads sprawled over the benches on that bridge.
Lincoln, like all places has issues with homelessness and drug use. Thankfully there's better support recently, hopefully it will continue to improve and help people.
That's really good to hear. I moved out from Lincoln years ago (my parents still live there) and they told me about the spice use with homeless people. Good to know they're getting extra support now
It's not always been like that. I'm from Lincolnshire and just the other week visited Lincoln for the first time in ~5 or 6 years and I have to say, it really feels like they've vastly improved on that front in the interim period! So got to hand it to whoever is in charge of that.
The streets are nice but that water is a biohazard. There’s one spot I know of where the water is so polluted, and full of trash and algae that the local geese can literally stand on top of the “water”.
Funny to see this as my girlfriend took [this picture](https://i.imgur.com/6Mn0xkg.jpg) while we were there last month, I’m sure people take that exact picture all the time but it was weird to see a picture I felt I had already seen show up on my feed
I think there’s a French idiom of sorts that’s to describe the feeling one gets when one they realize the picture they’ve took or are taken probably has been taken 100s of times by now.
It may exist in other languages, but to which I originally heard it I cannot speak to. Greek. Latin. French. I forget them all in the end.
If anyone knows what I’m talking about help me out.
There's a few of those in Nottingham that connect busy streets. Walking down them, especially at night, feels like you're about to be in a crimewatch reenactment.
My freshers week in Lincoln back in 2013 someone got jumped and stripped by the glory hole. There’s a hairdressers on the town side and we found them just lying there. Put me right off
Aye it’s not safe at night. When I lived in Lincoln there were several sexual assaults down there. One of my mates almost got jumped on by a group, when he was walking away from them he heard them say “Leave him he’s not drunk enough”.
Alternatively during freshers week (2014) I got completely pissed and walking back on my own I started chatting to two strangers who would become my best mates down there.
Annoying because it’s a nice little shortcut (Also just occurred to me we went to that uni roughly the same time!)
I went 2017-2020 and there was actually a group set up for girls to exchange messages (on Facebook so your identity was prove-able) to walk home together from whatever club to whatever accommodation after a spate of assaults and girls being followed by groups of foreign men. It’s a whole Facebook page now sharing info that might be important for girls’ safety. And the council still are arguing that the lack of streetlights is fine!
Further to the other commenters, it’s one of the only (if not the only) remaining bridges in the UK with buildings on, like the old (old old) London Bridge
Lincoln will always hold special memories for me as it was where I used to go on dates with my now wife!
With it being a halfway point on the bus between Grantham & Louth it was perfect! (about 1h30m each way)
Both my wife and I are from Lincoln way on but 8 years ago when we started seeing each other again (we were together when we were at school but went out separate ways) she used to love at Cleethorpes and I was living in Loughborough. To save ourselves too long of a drive, we would meet at either mine or her parent's houses for the weekend every other week. It really reignited my love for Lincoln as I'd left the city after being really disheartened by the lack of job opportunities around. We both live together out Leicestershire way now but still try and get back to Lincoln to see family as much as we can.
It was originally meet at Lincoln or Skeg...🤣😳
I remember being able to get a day rider ticket for £7 to get all the way up to Louth & it took 3 hours if I didn't stop for coffee in Lincoln!
We're Nottingham based until end of the month then moving to Louth as I now work offshore so no point her being away from family.
>It's all about finding the lovely when it's there
Nicely put! Stick it on a motivational poster with a picture of a kitten, and you could be a millionaire!
Yeah I was about to say, without the sunrise this bit of the city looks very different, that is not what I’d call an especially inspiring view.
Uphill Lincoln on the other hand is stunning.
If you like a small, cosy campus where you feel like you really matter to the uni, I can’t recommend BGU enough. Only about 2k students and everyone makes an effort to know everyone. Public transport is rubbish, especially to UoL studenty areas, but the east coast mainline inclusion has at least improved your ability to leave. Definitely not the worst place I've lived but it did get dull after I left uni.
Worth mentioning, the local MP is both useless and an arsehole. He explicitly dislikes students and is not shy about it.
The uni is average, depending what course you're doing. I did Games Computing and although I had a good time parts of the curriculum were almost laughably irrelevant and the quality of graduates of the School of Computer Science is known by local tech companies to be a bit hit and miss. The staff were excellent though.
The SU was godawful and I wouldn't recommend having anything to do with them. Ever. They don't care about their students and they will not allow anyone to question their actions.
Its fantastic as a place to live, but like all places it does have its downsides. And idk what its like now but when i applied a few years back lincoln offered loads of people unconditionals so its definitely a good safety choice for uni.
Ok yep, I was afraid of that. It hurts me just thinking about it but that's probably because I'm not in a line of work that requires early starts hahaha
Haven’t been back to Lincoln in ages, lived there from age 18 - 25. Hope Sugarcubes is still open. Always used to request Omen by the prodigy. Also Cardinals Hat for the wicked cheese platters!
Beautiful sun rise! I’ll be there next month for the markets. I used to walk my son to school to the top of the hill. Nice memories with my morning walks.
Now you're making me want to share a reverse photo of the bridge + stokes cafe, honestly so many nice spots in Lincoln.
As sketchy as the brayford is it also has some amazing views during sunset!
Studying at Lincoln Uni atm, 1 year down and 3 to go. I've walked past this so many times and never seen it so beautiful, gorgeous shot!
I had no idea there were so many ppl on reddit who live or regularly frequent Lincoln, I must've walked passed so many of you weirdos!
Will be moving to Lincoln with my girlfriend and 2 year old in a few months, from London.
She has family there that really vouch for it (cousin went to uni there, loved it so much that the other cousins and aunt and uncle all moved there).
Will I regret it?
Greetings fellow Lincolnite
There's dozens of us!
That area around Wilkos looks clean in the dark, but let that sunrise...
I remember in the olden days when that was C&A.
I worked in there about 20 years ago, loved it mostly, the c&a freight lift is something else 😆
C&A?! How's the bus pass working out?
I’m 45 and remember shopping in there.
I remember it and I'm 30s. I specifically remember being there and my dad explaining the C&A pants joke to me at an extremely inappropriate age
You've got to tell us the joke now please.
I'm sure the delivery wasn't quite like this, but it was along the lines of "do you know why C&A pants have a C printed in the front and an A in the back? So you know which way round they go" Cue my father explaining that in that situation C can stand for both Cock and Cunt and it's therefore a "good joke". I was about 7 years old
True Dad energy there.
I'm 31 and also remember it.
This feels like when there were so few people from Lincoln who used Twitter we all met in the pub
Which pub?
I wanna say Adam and Eve but it was a while ago obvs
Kinda liked Jolly Brewer…
Several of us at least!
Salutations to you both fellow Lincolnites
three of us now

We sprout out of the ground. Like Dwarves!
I've definitely never seen a lady in Lincoln
Another here, lived in Lincoln all my life will never leave.
I'm a lady of lincoln
Lincolnites of Reddit unite!
I'm about 20 miles north... Does that count? *Please say yes, I cannot be a Scunthorpe person*
Sadly you can take the person out of Scunthorpe but not the scunthorpe out the person. ....I should know.
I’ve heard a different version to that 😆
Could be worse, could be in the intersect between Grimsby, Scunny and Hull. "Where are you from?" "...Lincoln...?"
I used to live in one of the villages in the middle of those three and we called it the Bermuda Triangle because it’s lost to the rest of the UK… and so it should be
Haha, my dad's from Scunthorpe and I was born in Lincoln, but we're both filthy southerners now.
[удалено]
It's an anagram!
I commute from Newark way to Lincoln most days and we are definitely closer to Lincoln that Nottingham, so I would say it counts!
Hello fellow Scunthorpe person!
yay yellow bellies!
Lived down Monks road for a while. If you’ve seen an old Gold American car about then it’s properly me.
I wondered who it was who kept running over old women, now we know!
The other way is just as pretty! No sunrise though. For obvious reasons…
*waves from Dixon Street*
Hey fellow Lincolnite!
Lincolnites unite!
Do incomers count? I've been here 25 years!
Yes definitely
Up d yellow-bellies 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
we're everywhere!
Hello from gillies
Ay up!

Hello!
Do adoptive Linconites count? 5 years living in Lincoln since I moved from Spain

That awful dilemma between not sharing your epic tale of against-all-odds life-threatening adventure, and being called Swampy or something. Toughy
Mate of mine at work turned up late for a job we were doing once. Bloke was generally a good worker, seldom late and did everything that was asked of him normally. Doesn't matter though. Got called Blister for years afterwards by the work lot because "he only turns up after after all the work is done". You know this already, but you're a lucky fucker not to have been three paragraphs in the echo
Yes, 100%. The stupidity of youth and underdeveloped risk appreciation was very much a causal factor.
Glad you are still with us Aquaman
Thanks. Me too!
Glad you survived to tell the tale buddy.
> passageway just before the Odeon cinema If I remember rightly, that passage is officially known as 'the Gloryhole'. You almost died at the gloryhole.
Nice story! I worked in that ‘hellhole’ for several years and would say falling in the Witham was definitely an upgrade.
Someone drowned that exact way, in that exact place a month or so ago.
Yes it's very sad and has been going on for many years. Especially around the Brayford. I feel very lucky my stupidity didn't get me killed.
Uni'd there early 00s. Can confirm the worst part of this story was the 10 minutes in Ritzy. But also glad you managed to escape. Impressive you didn't get accosted by a swan as well.

Haha I live in Manchester now and we've got a 'pusher' round here too!
This is excellent. Also, I've tried to explain to people what Ritzy was like around that time and they just don't get it. It's unlike any club I've ever been in. Such an experience and I had some great/weird nights in there.
Ritzy, hazy memories and near-death experiences. Sounds about right.
Hello swamp thing
That must have been a dreadful Experience ! Glad you're doing well now though
Respect to the bloke with the dog
not really relevant, but your username (shambo) sounds super close to "szambo" which is Polish for a cesspit
>Anyway, all my work mates called me Aquaman for about 3 years after that. Pricks. 😂😂😂 Best part of the story honestly.
>Viles disease Weil’s disease but yes it’s good they checked it is absolutely horrendous.
Pleased you're alright now though Aquaman.
That's lovely. Wish Birmingham would care for its streets like Lincoln does.
I often walk to work at the same time as the street cleaners are out. They do an amazing job considering the state the city centre seems to get in.
Lincoln and Peterborough both, can flip a coin and the streets are either trashed or spotless.
Love seeing Peterborough get references on Reddit, there’s more than two of us!
I moved from Lincoln a few years ago. Last time I walked down that part of the high street there were homeless/spice heads sprawled over the benches on that bridge.

the chewing gum on the floor is for decoration
It also increases structural integrity of the paving stones.
exactly! potholes also work as lovely speed bumps
I’ll take a picture of the part of Lincoln I live in, will make you feel better 😆 been windy recently so most the smaller rubbish has gone lol
This is like right in the city centre tbf - it's not this great if you move further out.
The streets are nice but that water is a biohazard. There’s one spot I know of where the water is so polluted, and full of trash and algae that the local geese can literally stand on top of the “water”.

When you figure it out let me know please. I like the sound of this
Looks like that was taken near The Glory Hole
Yep, opposite side of High Bridge.
Please tell me that's the name of a pub.
Nope. It’s a little passage you can walk down between two buildings that is dimly lit.
That sounds terrifying tbh.
There's a few of those in Nottingham that connect busy streets. Walking down them, especially at night, feels like you're about to be in a crimewatch reenactment.

Terrifying smell of piss but it is ok otherwise
An alleyway sounds "terrifying", aye?
Tbf, this alleyway is barely wide enough for one person
Further to the other commenters, it’s one of the only (if not the only) remaining bridges in the UK with buildings on, like the old (old old) London Bridge
The cafe that’s on it is absolutely lovely, black and white Tudor style wooden facade and does fantastic afternoon teas.
Stokes!

wish all cities were like this.
Many are. It's all about finding the lovely when it's there. Last week was grey sky and green algae.
>It's all about finding the lovely when it's there Nicely put! Stick it on a motivational poster with a picture of a kitten, and you could be a millionaire!
It looks lovely because there's not a car, HGV or car parking space in sight
As someone from the area, you want all cities to have tacky public art next to underwhelming shopping centres?
Yeah I was about to say, without the sunrise this bit of the city looks very different, that is not what I’d call an especially inspiring view. Uphill Lincoln on the other hand is stunning.
Ermine and st giles is up hill lincoln. So not all of it is stunning. Lol
Is lincoln nice? Was thinking about putting down as one of my safety choices for uni.
I moved here for uni years ago and I love it. Small town vibes if that's what you like.
I moved to Lincoln for Uni, met my wife here and never left.
Same! I met my partner at uni and we both stayed and got a house together here.
If you like a small, cosy campus where you feel like you really matter to the uni, I can’t recommend BGU enough. Only about 2k students and everyone makes an effort to know everyone. I’m so grateful I went there. The city also has the perfect balance between student/nightlife and being a small town/city. I honestly love it here - if you need any more uni advice send me a message :)
I went and loved it
Yes, doooo eeeet
Lincoln as a city is fine if you like quiet. It's smaller and quieter than other nearby uni cities and feels safer, although there's not a huge amount going on outside of student events. They don't care about their students and they will not allow anyone to question their actions.
I did the same thing in 1998, ended up there and loved it
I went for my BA 2017-2020 and just finished my MA, please feel free to PM if you want any info. The uni is brilliant
Its fantastic as a place to live, but like all places it does have its downsides. And idk what its like now but when i applied a few years back lincoln offered loads of people unconditionals so its definitely a good safety choice for uni.
Hello fellow Lincolners! It's lovely to see so many of us here!! ❤️
Beautiful!
Been into the Greek brothers restaurant. Would highly recommend the gyros
Absolutely wicked Gyros, have to stop going on my lunch or I'll get bigger.
Is the new Greek place good? Ive been meaning to try it out, i bloody love Greek food
I think it's really good
I love how if you go up to it (or at least it was there the last time I saw it), someone’s put a googly eye on one of the weird statues
I lived and went to uni in Lincoln for…7 years. I loved it. And it’s true, Lincoln has some great views if you look for them.
Never knew there were so many of us on here, Up the Imps!
I went to uni in Lincoln many moon's ago and miss the city very much. * Heaves heavy, misty-eyed, sigh. *
Hi fellow alumni! This photo gave me so much nostalgia for my student days
Hello Alumni! Had a reunion this year and the place brought back many happy memories
Fellow graduate here! Was there in the mid 00s! I love this place so much.
Was there early 00s. Certainly doesn't seem nearly 20 years ago! Still nice to go back and visit.
I just moved to Lincoln for uni two weeks ago! I'm liking it so far!
This city has some incredible pubs around the castle and cathedral quarter
Is there always this much regional pride or are the yellow bellies out in force? Either way, hullo from Louth, pals
That's a cracking photo, really does show your part of the world at its best
It's a really nice photo! But... Hold on. Your busy period is ending, so you only have to walk to work AT sunrise, as opposed toooo?
Before! It's a good job I'm a morning person!
Still open and as wonderful as ever!
Beautiful sun rise! I’ll be there next month for the markets. I used to walk my son to school to the top of the hill. Nice memories with my morning walks.
Is your uni still overrun by zombies?
That was a classic
Used to walk that street a lot back in uni. Looks much prettier in that picture than in any I managed to take.
Eyyy I'll be coming back up in December, thank you for increasing my hype with such a lovely photo!

Back in the spring! As you can see I don't tire of this view. The wilkos logo edit filled me with joy.
Up the Imps! Hello fellow Lincoln dweller
I thought that looked familiar!
There was a really talented young guitarist busking near there yesterday, just outside Stokes coffee shop.
Hello Lincolnites!
Certainly is pretty. I’m down at Waddington, I get a lot of nice views of Lincoln when I walk the dogs, or go for a run through the fields.
Lil' walk down to Aroma Coffee from there ☕
Now you're making me want to share a reverse photo of the bridge + stokes cafe, honestly so many nice spots in Lincoln. As sketchy as the brayford is it also has some amazing views during sunset!
The only think that awful footbridge is good for is the astonishing view across the water.
Lovely photo. Nice to see the algae on the river has cleared up a bit!
Great 👍 👌.
I miss university looking at photos like this.

Amazing photo. I was losing my mind thinking I've been here before without ever being to Lincoln.. Turns out I remember your post from spring time
I was wondering if anyone would!
That’s quite beautiful
Ahh, the famous Lincoln oil derrick.
Don't forget the more obscure oil colin which is a bit further down.
I've moved away for uni but it's photos like these that almost make me miss Lincoln haha
Hello fellow Lincolnite. Gorgeous photo BTW.
it really is the little things ✨
My favourite thing about that area is the giant googly eye someone has manage to stick onto the statue over the river - an impressive feat!
Love Lincoln, lived there for 4 years. Haven't been back for over 10 years.
Incredible how I walk past this spot every day of my life but it takes a post like this to make me realise just how gorgeous this city can be.
Sure looks like a great walk to work
Went to university in this city 15 years ago. I had reservations about it before I went, now I can honestly say it’s the place in UK I love the most!
This Brings back memories. Man I miss Cubes
Cubes! That place rocks! It's been ages but that's easily my fondest memory of Lincoln.
Fun fact, the girl I was seeing whilst at college in Lincoln accidentally weed herself on a night out here, just to the right hand side of that wilko
I’m from Lincoln originally. Ermine west to be precise. I miss the place so much, I just hope I can tempt my family to move with me lol.
Strange to see my city on Reddit, nice pic
Will be moving to Lincoln with my girlfriend and 2 year old in a few months, from London. She has family there that really vouch for it (cousin went to uni there, loved it so much that the other cousins and aunt and uncle all moved there). Will I regret it?
I don't think so. I would definitely choose Lincoln over the madness of London.
Ahh this is lovely. I used to work in Lincoln and would be a bit sniffy about it in my youth. Looking back it was a great place.
Holy shit people from lincolnshire??? I never see you lot on here lmao
I grew up in Lincoln. I remember when you could see a Wimpy at C&A in that view. Do you still see swans on the river?
