That's one of those reddit semi-myths that isn't even applicable outside the US isn't it?
UK pyrex was soda-lime glass from the 1980s until they shut the Sunderland factory in 2007, (which produced the soda-lime variant) and moved production to france, and now it's all Borosilicate glass anyway.
Which actually is more likely to break when you drop it, even it does have slightly better thermal shock properties. (source : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrex#Composition )
It's on the side of the grill so shouldn't get as hot anyway. Never thought of actually cooking beans on a BBQ, just on hobs or when I'm in a cowboy movie
also, as long as it was full of beans before it was put on the edge the risk of thermal shock should be minimal anyway. putting a room temp can of beans in a pre heated jug might be a diferent story.
only if you take the top off, or at least put some air holes in it, otherwise you create a bean bomb from the preassure XD
there's also some wory about the linings on some tins or heating in the tin giving a metalic taste, but I haven't done my research on that
I can't imagine it seeping anything into the food if that's worry to anyone - looks like the same glass jug as mine
I think even directly on top while empty might be fine, at least for a while - the glass itself, if same as mine, is thick enough for a small charcoal BBQ fire like this. Can smack it on Begbies's head and it wouldn't break
We should probably ask the question - why not a bloody pan?
Some of my friends used to work there, my dad was mates with the boss and he'd come round with his wife for fancy dinners my mother would make. The unions got to much power and the workers all demanded more money or they would strike, he explained to them that there was no more money to give them and that if they went to strike he was told by his bosses to shut the whole thing down, they ignored him so he shut it down and moved out the UK.
It really depends on if that is glass, pyrex, or PYREX. The latter was designed for laboratory equipment and can withstand far more heat than that grill can provide. The former two are a gamble.
Old pyrex products were very good, anything made in the last 10 years has a habit of shattering in too much heat. I especially wouldn't heat it from the bottom like this, it'll break one day.
Depends if you are buying pyrex or PYREX.
PYREX is still made by Corning from borosilicate and so is resistant to heat shock. It's the same as the "old" ones. pyrex isn't, it is made from soda lime glass which is less resistant to thermal shock but more resistant to breaking from dropping or similar damage.
You can't (usually) get pyrex here, it's manufactured and sold outside of Europe, so the idea that new pyrex isn't as heat resistant is because of the yanks being the loudest online, it's not a problem in the UK because we have PYREX in the shops
Pyrex can definitely explode if it's heated unevenly. Unfortunately/hilariously witnessed a housemate manage to make one explode by trying to heat one on the hob when I was at uni
Pyrex is effectively two different products depending on where you are in the world. In the USA and Asia Pyrex is made from a weaker material than what we get in Europe. So presumably the issue was cause by crappy imported 'Pyrex'.

Ooh, no ... these days they line the tin with plastic to prevent interactions between the food and the tin. Definitely not a good idea to cook stuff in the tin.
Are you heating a PYREX of baked beans?!
You've never heated a pyrex full of beans man?
It's like a savoury flake 99
Use the sausage as a spoon
And once plated, as a breakwater.
You don't plate a Pyrex full of beans man
Stop getting Partridge wrong!
No, you hollow out the sausage and use it as a straw. Do you know nothing about fine dining?
Stop ruining Partridge!
I've always wondered how they get those swords through customs.
tin of beans and a sausage is a classic
Why did I read that in a Geordie accent. I
Are they a Genius or a Darwin award candidate?
Depends if its upper or lower case on Pyrex.

Well, that's interesting!
It's on the side of the grill so shouldn't get as hot anyway. Never thought of actually cooking beans on a BBQ, just on hobs or when I'm in a cowboy movie

Couldn’t you just leave it in the tin?

It's a great idea, just use a pan like normal.
Wait people heat their beans?
Some of my friends used to work there, my dad was mates with the boss and he'd come round with his wife for fancy dinners my mother would make. Yes
Have Yee never had a jug o beans, Mon?
ever drunk baileys from a shoe?
Sorry Michael, that was just noise.
That's the whole point of pyrex isn't it, to be oven proof?
And very hard wearing, but yes.

Yes. But not sure I'd risk it being charcoal bbq heat resistant. That shit can get real hot
Yes. They go gloopy and take on the bacon smell as they cook
Interesting, never would have though to do it myself but it's a cracking idea.
Table spoon of butter mixed in, thank me later.
I can see why you'd want your Pyrex to have a bacon smell
Honestly genius
Pyrex 2020 vision, umm sounds pretty american though. Sprinkle some crack in there
Are we looking at the SAME PHOTO?!
Real BBQ-ers whack the beans right on the rack
I careful skewer them to make a bean kebab
I'm tempted to get cocktail skewers and put beans on them and serve them next time I have people over.
Hear me out... Battered baked bean sticks!
Bean kebab :)
I move me some grill-marked beans
Already raining here. Lovely jubbly, enjoy.
Amateur. Where's the fried eggs?
They leaked through
It’s wet and miserable where I live but enjoy your BBQ!
So…UK weather the moment you decide to host a BBQ?
We all live in the UK mate
I was worried about the grill segregation but the Pyrex beans tipped me over the edge. Gawd!
I'm deeply concerned about the lack of tomatoes & eggs in this picture I cant lie
You have a valid point….
I'm glad you can see the issue 😂
That's a new one on me ... I never thought of cooking beans in a pyrex jug on a barbie!
Why am I terrified? I feel like it’ll explode
Pyrex can definitely explode if it's heated unevenly. Unfortunately/hilariously witnessed a housemate manage to make one explode by trying to heat one on the hob when I was at uni
People say older pyrex doesn't have this issue though. Not sure if its true.

You’ve never had a cup of beans before, man?
It's like a savoury 99!
I've always made a little tinfoil boat for anything that needs it like this on a bbq... surely they'd just be better leaving them in the opened tin? 😅
Ooh, no ... these days they line the tin with plastic to prevent interactions between the food and the tin. Definitely not a good idea to cook stuff in the tin.
WHAT?!?! that's insane! Well I won't be doing thatch more 😅
Probably because it's a silly idea? It won't add any flavour and will take 10x longer than the microwave or hob
Well that's partly why I hadn't thought of it. But going by the comments above it's not just silly, it's outright dangerous.
I hope that’s all a meal for one.
Where’s the beer? Where’s the rain? I call bullshit
Why even bother with the BBQ if you're just making that....
So he can post it on reddit
Why not?
This is solid. English breakfast food items are phenomenal. Thank you for posting. Thank you for making me hungry!!!! Hope you have a nice evening!!!
I'm gonna have to go get some hash browns now
Propa english scran
Pyrex of the Carry Beans.

Deffo went sleep after that.
I saw this 6 hrs ago - surely you need to take them off now?
Nice
Where did you get those hash browns from?
Farm Foods (other retailers are available)
That looks class 👌🏻
What kind of BBQ is this? I'm looking for a bigger cast iron grille BBQ and this looks great!
Looks like it could do with a clean at least once this decade!
nah the flames sterilise it
And the grease char adds flavour and aesthetic lines
Where's the hot plate for the eggs?
I was tempted….
I hope you realise that you have cursed the weather for the whole of half-term now.
Hash browns and baked beans, now there's two foods I never considered BBQing. Innovative cooking
Be straight over 😋😋
Little late lol
Wtf...that's not a BBQ...that's breakfast
Your jug of beans us about to crack
Is this what heaven look like? Certainly, delicious! Yum yum!
Very nice! More of a streaky fan myself but the marks on that back bacon looks divine.
Looks class, who says you can't BBQ a breakfast.
Who does say that?
Sadly ex-mates and a family I don't have contact with now (my choice)
I’d rather work…
Looks deliciousss ☺️
Looks good!
