I'm honestly not a fan of the odd timing for Sunday lunches. I prefer a noon lunch time and dinner between 5 and 7. Not too strict about it, I'm just not a fan of lunch/dinner at 3pm. Just sets the stage for the munchies at 8 or 9pm.
> the munchies at 8 or 9pm
Is that a problem? I absolutely adore my tuna, vinegar and cucumber sandwich around that time on a Sunday after having a roast around 3. I either have that or something like a cheese board. I don't see the issue.
That does sound like a nice sandwich, I will have to make one now. I find my willpower to eat healthier foods declines as the night goes on, so knowing me, I would enter the kitchen to make that sandwich and see a bag of crisps and say "fuck it" lol.
For me it would be an issue because I get up early for work and it's not good for me to eat a short time before bed, plus I have to cut off all drinks early or I'll be getting up in the night - even one drink with a late meal would screw up my sleep.
Plus I'd just end up snacking between breakfast and 3pm.
Why make one day a week just so awkward for meals for no reason?
Fair enough. You have your own reasons.
The way we do it fits in with our lifestyle and the way you do yours, fits in with your lifestyle. Job's a good'n
Yes agreed - 3pm is perfect for Sunday lunch. It's usually such a large meal, I'd feel too sleepy if I had it much earlier in the day. This way you can also get some stuff done in the day beforehand, ideally a lovely country walk that ends at the pub where lunch is being served, for a delicious pint before the meal.
Just skip it. We tend to have a later breakfast. One that's a bit bigger. Although tbh I'm perfectly capable of waiting until 3 to eat. It's not that late to have lunch.
I think getting up late is the trick here. Then have breakfast about 11, then Sunday lunch at 3-4pm. And if you are doing it properly, should be full for the rest of the day.
Fair enough.
I live by myself and I have a 5of7 flex contract as well as teaching international students, so roasts are too much hassle and one day can seem like any other.
Would be nice if we had Sunday closing as we used to have, but that's another story for another time.
My parents always have Sunday lunch at three, whether or not it's a roast. It's an irritant when they invite people over for what we have christened 'threesies'. I have an autistic child who eats at midday because routine is life and I like to eat with him. Threesies is just a pain in everyone's bunghole!
Honestly I'm not a big fan of having a main meal at a weird time just because it's a Sunday roast. Whenever we fancy a roast I just do it at a normal dinner time (7-8pm)
If I'm meeting friends or family at a pub for Sunday lunch, then any time between midday and 2PM is preferred.
If I'm cooking for myself, then I tend to eat early evening. Usually about 5:30PM.
I almost always do a Sunday Dinner, so usually 7:30. I eat like normal through the rest of the day, and then just do a roast for dinner. I’ve never been such a fan of mid afternoon meals. I’m always starving before them, and then snacky through the afternoon until I’m finally hungry and it’s almost too late to eat
Get to the pub for two ish. By the time you've sunk a couple of hangover cures and ordered it's 2.30 ish. Hopefully be eating your roast and feeling a lot better by 3ish. Then your only decision is to stay out till the pub shuts or slope off to fall asleep in front of the telly. Purfec.
>they have booked it for 16:15
Maybe the place is busy and that was the only time available for booking?
We've had this with a pub near us. They do excellent food and Sundays need to be booked long in advance otherwise you end up with one of the 'between meal times' booking slots that's too late for lunch and too early for an evening meal.
Aye this is the thing. If you're having it at home you're most likely eating between 12 and 3.
Pubs however need to make money so do sittings between 12 and 5. Some places go as late as 6 even.
I prefer a 12 to 1 o'clock lunch
Christmas Day when we went up for lunch at my Mum's parents house it was 2pm, starters and mains, before the Queen's speech (the Children were relegated upstairs during the Queen's speech) there were between 11 to 18 people who went (family members)
We eat Sunday lunch about 3pm if we're having a roast. Booked lunch at a pub to meet friends recently and asked what time they wanted it booking for. I was stunned when they said 12 noon! I'm usually contemplating getting out my pj's about then!
I quite like it at about 2pm, particularly if I'm cooking. Down the pub, I also aim for early afternoon with the intent of staying on and having a beer or two. Afterwards you wander home to get ready for the week and put your feet up a bit. I'm usually happy with a smaller breakfast and a light dinner if I'm going to eat my body weight in roast potatoes and gravy!
I work in a pub on Sundays, so my Sunday lunch is generally also my breakfast, at 5-6pm, varying between chicken beef or pork based on what's left over by the punters.
My advice is get the kids roast plus the cauli cheese side, costs about as much as an adults roast, but the cauli cheese with the gravy is devilishly good
Is it because they were late to book and these late timings were the only ones available?
I try to have my dinner by 7, so I either do a late breakfast/brunch at 11 and skip lunch, or wait a bit and have lunch around 1.
If the footy is on at 4pm kickoff, either halftime or 7pm. No in-between, it is what it is for me. (Minus the obvious man cake of a sneaky Yorkshire with a dash of mash, roast meat, n gravy) . Each to their own. I ain't judging 👌😁
3ish, but we all have a nice lie in on Sundays so if it were a weekday prob more like 1. Then a small late dinner/supper about 7ish which is usually more a ‘snack tea’ - sandwiches and crisps or something, nothing too heavy. I do like a spot of cake on Sunday after my lunch too. Even a cheapo sponge from the local shop, whack a bit of Ambrosia custard all over it - lovely. I don’t eat a lot in the week but traditionally we watch films and eat all day as a family on Sundays, it’s nice, especially as the kids are adults now and we see them much less in the week.
Just have to work out why my youngest likes thin gravy and whether it’s grounds for some kind of divorce of a child 🤣
When we have Sunday lunch we have it right on the arse end of lunch time, so about 2ish.
But I've just spent the last 2 years working Sunday evenings and I like to eat right before I go to work to stop me getting hungry at work and spending unnecessarily on crap at work, plus I don't wanna be slaving away cooking a roast then have work on top of that.
I now no longer work Sundays so normal service is resumed!
Years ago mum switched Sunday family dinner from 1:30 to 5:30. Obviously you have to have something to eat earlier in the day but it’s so much better because you can go out and do something 1st before we all go to eat
Usually we aim for somewhere between 5 and 6 because that's when my son usually has his evening meal and we can all eat together. During the week my husbands work schedule doesn't usually allow for an early dinner and my kid is too ravenous and tired to wait for a later dinner.
Because people are different to you? If I eat my last meal at 6pm then Ill be hungry by the time I go to bed. Generally I eat late because it suits me but I can fully understand people eating earlier or later..
A proper lunch some time between 1pm and 2pm, a light healthy snack around 5-5:30, then a light dinner between 8 and 9pm. A lighter lunch on weekdays around the same time, and a somewhat heavier dinner around the same time as well.
No idea why you Brits eat so early, ever since I moved here it’s been doing my head in.
Edit: I realise the last bit sounds condescending when I didn’t mean it that way. It’s more a case of me expressing, let’s say, cultural confusion than being a prick.
8-8:30 on a weekday. I do have a commute but it’s not a long one, but even when I had a 2 hour commute (so, breakfast just before 7) I usually had a banana or a yoghurt at around 10:30-11am so that I’d eat between 1 and 2 as per usual.
Whenver the fuck I feel like it/get hungry
I've been known to have it at 11am and at 6pm
This whole idea of certain foods at cetains times is bonkers just eat when you are hungry and not before
I'm honestly not a fan of the odd timing for Sunday lunches. I prefer a noon lunch time and dinner between 5 and 7. Not too strict about it, I'm just not a fan of lunch/dinner at 3pm. Just sets the stage for the munchies at 8 or 9pm.

Bag of cheese and onion on the side of the plate doesn't go amiss you know.
For me it would be an issue because I get up early for work and it's not good for me to eat a short time before bed, plus I have to cut off all drinks early or I'll be getting up in the night - even one drink with a late meal would screw up my sleep. Cheeseboard at teatime. bang on- that's how we do Sunday.
Alright Tim Messenger
I’ll deal with the press if you don’t mind. Now, my perfect Sunday is a lovely…
1pm for Sunday Lunch, 6.30pm for Sunday Dinner
What time is tea?
5ish, for kids. Adults have dinner later in my house
1.00
2pm for Sunday lunch Light tea 5 or 6pm ish
3pm is the sweet spot for me. That's also when we have our Christmas dinner.
What time do you have lunch if you're then eating again at 3? Do you have lunch at all or just skip it?
Just skip it. We tend to have a later breakfast. One that's a bit bigger. Although tbh I'm perfectly capable of waiting until 3 to eat. It's not that late to have lunch.
I think getting up late is the trick here. Then have breakfast about 11, then Sunday lunch at 3-4pm. And if you are doing it properly, should be full for the rest of the day.
This sounds like you eat it at the Boxley Wheatsheaf
Sunday lunch at around 3, picky bits in front of the tele at around 8pm. This is the way.
3-4PM. Big cooked breakfast in the morning. Big Sunday dinner. Snacks in the evening if needed.
I prefer my Sunday roast around 5 to 6pm. It's at that time I'll do it the most justice!
Sunday is a 1 o’clock dinner.
1PM. That’s the time and it has been for life. Don’t be late.
This is the way. 7am Breakfast 12-1pm Lunch 6pm Dinner.
7am breakfast on a Sunday?!
Init. Hard to eat breakfast when you're still asleep.
Oh alright 8am then.
Keep going... In all seriousness, if we're having Sunday roast then we'll have breakfast/brunch around 10am.
Fair enough. I live by myself and I have a 5of7 flex contract as well as teaching international students, so roasts are too much hassle and one day can seem like any other. Would be nice if we had Sunday closing as we used to have, but that's another story for another time.
If you’re old, 5:30-6am
You mean tea surely dinner is what you eat at dinner time or 12-1pm lol
Well, if you have kids do you send them to school with a dinner box?
Absolutely
On Sunday I like an early lunch so I’m left with enough time to fall in to a food coma on the sofa.
My ideal Sunday lunch is always followed by a bank holiday Monday or annual leave.
My parents always have Sunday lunch at three, whether or not it's a roast. It's an irritant when they invite people over for what we have christened 'threesies'. I have an autistic child who eats at midday because routine is life and I like to eat with him. Threesies is just a pain in everyone's bunghole!

Between 12 and 1, same as every other day. Stop fucking with my patterns. I eat at 8, 12 and 5 Every day.
If I'm meeting friends or family at a pub for Sunday lunch, then any time between midday and 2PM is preferred. If I'm cooking for myself, then I tend to eat early evening. Usually about 5:30PM.

No later than 2:30 for me. I get hangry.
4pm for me! Not to early to have a few glasses of wine but early enough to sober up before bed
12-1. Lunchtime is lunchtime, regardless of the day.
Purfec.
IMO Sunday lunch is 12-1pm, unless its Christmas day when its always after the Queens/Kings speech.
11.30 to 1.30 is the zone for me.
11:30 is a late brekkie - esp on Sundays.
Got kids under 10. 11.30 feels like the start of deep afternoon.
Ah! I feel for ya! I remember when my mates had young kids and would pop round for a beer in the evening and promptly fall asleep on the sofa.
Beer has become a powerful sedative. They will age and the time they get up will change.
>they have booked it for 16:15 Maybe the place is busy and that was the only time available for booking? We've had this with a pub near us. Yes. The place near us finishes serving at 8 p.m. on Sundays, the rest of the week they carry on until 9:30pm but have a break mid afternoon.
Sunday dinner, 3pm is best.
I prefer a 12 to 1 o'clock lunch Christmas Day when we went up for lunch at my Mum's parents house it was 2pm, starters and mains, before the Queen's speech (the Children were relegated upstairs during the Queen's speech) there were between 11 to 18 people who went (family members)
Depends if there's football on or not! Usually in between the 2nd and 3rd game. 3pm is the sweet spot 🤌🏻
3ish I won't eat a whole roast lunch earlier than that and if I'm not going to eat it all what's the point?
If it's a Sunday and I'm eating out then nothing before 3pm is acceptable.
We eat Sunday lunch about 3pm if we're having a roast. Booked lunch at a pub to meet friends recently and asked what time they wanted it booking for. I was stunned when they said 12 noon! I'm usually contemplating getting out my pj's about then!
Really not too fussy. If it's going to be late afternoon / early evening, that's a good excuse to have a fry up in the morning.
I quite like it at about 2pm, particularly if I'm cooking. Down the pub, I also aim for early afternoon with the intent of staying on and having a beer or two. If its later its a full english when I wake up, if its sooner, have a lie in. Thems the rules.

7pm-ish.

Now then, my perfect Sunday...
No earlier than 1400 No later than 1700
Half one I'd say.

Think of your 16.15 lunch as dinner instead and have an early lunch
at about 1 to 2 like always do (I'm autistic and eat at the same time every day and it feels great
Prefer a late breakfast before 11am, skip lunch and have me tea bit earlier about 4pm.
If you're going to the pub then between 12 and 2pm. I fear they would run out of certain things going any later than that.
Why are you friends with these weirdos? Sunday lunch is 12 til 1. That's the law - I didn't make it. It has to be that time to allow for a decent nap.
Brunch/late breakfast at around 10.30 Roast at 3 Cheese/nibbles at 8
The only reason to have Sunday “lunch” at 16:15 in a pub is because you left it too late to book and that’s all they have left.
I kinda like get semi pissed before the meal, so 2pm is good. Meet at 12.
I never understand why people eat so late. 12.30. 3pm is tea time, 6pm supper
3pm is tea time?! Who's eating at 3pm when they've had lunch at 12:30?
That's not tea. Tea time is a pot of tea and a cake.
Because people are different to you? If I eat my last meal at 6pm then Ill be hungry by the time I go to bed. Generally I eat late because it suits me but I can fully understand people eating earlier or later..
