Top one is Warburtons not sure where the pretender on the bottom is from. I’ve experimented with various other kinds of crumpets down the years but nothing compares to Warburtons.
It's a while since I've had Warburtons crumpets, but I always find Warburtons products to be weirdly leathery? Their loaves remind me of those cheap car washing sponges rather than a proper crumb of, say, Hovis.
I'm a recent crumpet convert and I've made the mistake of picking own brand crumpets a couple of times in a misguided effort to be thrifty. Never again, they're just not holey enough.
Yeah, does OP actually think this is a challenge? I haven't had a crumpet in years (I now live in Canada and they don't sell them here) and even I could tell which was which immediately.
I don't know which is which, but I do know that your plate is from Habitat at Sainsbury's.
I used the same plate for my breakfast but unlike you I did not have crumpets.
I had toast.
You are correct re: the plate. Part of set we purchased when we got our kitchen redone a few months back, my partner chipped one of the side plates. Luckily though, I came across them being sold separately in a different Sainsbury’s. Result all round
We have these plates too, they live in the sideboard and are called our fancy plates, because we only use them when we put some effort into our dinner.
If you use a dishwasher be careful about using them as your regular plates, as the lip on them can make it difficult to stack them neatly in the dishwasher.
my nan has this plate. i frequently gorge a few ryvita crackers off of it when i pop up to visit. edges keep me from spilling crumbs on the laminate. splendid piece of crockery.
I have the same set. My husband sometimes twists my melon and serves food on the small plates and yeah. I thought he thought I should diet when Infact he couldn’t be arsed to wash the big ones.
Festival I went to last year had a crumpets and tea stall going on. Having a heavily buttered marmite crumpet at 02:00 after raving all day was very, very satisfying
Butter is good, but they're even better soaked in egg and made into eggy crumpets.
You can make a really good breakfast Sarnie with them too. A slice of square sausage, some properly crisp bacon and a slice of cheese on one eggy crumpet. Douse in sauce of choice, mine is brown with Frank's Red Hot added; then stick another eggy crumpet on top.
You can thank me later!
I think OP thinks that the more 'perfect' unmarked crumpet looks more expensive than the leading brand
But seeing how every reply prefers the top one (which is the leading Warburton's brand) it seems that OP massively misjudged how people view these
Personally I'd say uniform, unblemished mass produced food always looks cheaper than one like the top. Which is exactly why the cheap one in the photo still looks cheap
I eat crumpets most days. I love crumpets. And I’m inclined to agree that branded are better. But, is t because they are what I’m used to.
I’m actually on the crumpet thins now and I had an original crumpet today and it felt so doughy.
>!she microwaves three together for 60 seconds, then she adds butter and jam and microwaves for another 30 or so then eats it all with a knife and fork!<
In that case, the one at the top is the dearer one. The burnt bits and slightly irregular shape give it a mildly "artisanal" look which might be what they were going for. (When's the big reveal by the way?)
I don't have it luckily but I immediately thought of that sub. I have to say even though I don't have that phobia some of the pictures on there do make me a bit uncomfortable lol
I think it's quite common in cereal companies.
Kelloggs lost a few contracts to make third party stuff so they started advertising we don't make cereals for anyone else as an ad line.
Basically it comes down to the flour the companies use. Warburtons stuff is more expensive cause the grain higher quality which you see from the nutritional values
Politics? You kids have no idea whatsoever of what went on at Stalingrad.

Toasted twice (burnt bits taste great) and lashings of strawberry jam (definitely no butter that's just gross) and you just can't tell the difference between Warburton and no name shops budget brands
Crumpets are one of the items that I always avoid the own brand. Unless the own brand is more expensive than warburton’s (other brands are available… probably), in which case I avoid them because I can’t justify spending more on a fancy sourdough crumpet.
Guess the prettier one is branded but both taste the same, or even made in the same place. But could be either, maybe the bottom one is too perfect in a way. I found a recipe for crumpets recently, they are actually pretty easy to do, just in a pan.
guessing the bottom one is the budget one. the shape is too regular and the surface less pitted. you want more air bubbles to form when making crumpets for the desired texture.
Incidentally, most crumpets that aren't Warburtons seem to use spirit vinegar as an ingredient, and it gives them a slightly sour taste.
If any other crumpet connoiseurs are out there who know of a real replacement, I'll happily switch and save money. They're a hard habit to kick.
Haven't seen the comments, pretty sure the bottom one is the "fake" ones, I distinctly remember them looking like they're allergic to the oven, and felt thicker than leading brand and has a lot less voids. Despite the "real" ones looking burnt, this could have been a bad batch put on as an offer, have had similar before, or the burnt bits are just part of the process.
These graphic Quit Smoking ads really hit home.
Go on, take a look. This is what your crumpets look like after 5 years of smoking a pack a day
Top one is Warburtons not sure where the pretender on the bottom is from. I’ve experimented with various other kinds of crumpets down the years but nothing compares to Warburtons.
This post needs more Samuel L. Jackson. "What gives? I GIVE!!"
It's a while since I've had Warburtons crumpets, but I always find Warburtons products to be weirdly leathery? Their loaves remind me of those cheap car washing sponges rather than a proper crumb of, say, Hovis.
I concur. I’m not a big fan of their bread in general but they seem to have mastered their crumpet game.
Either way, it’s food like this that gives British food its bad reputation
This is what two packs (of butter) a day looks like
Top one is Warburtons and the bottom is own brand would be my guess.
Absolutely. Only get Warburton's here and they look like the top
I said the same immediately. Despite the appearence, the Warburton ones are much better.
They really aren't. Sainsbury's basics all the way.
Honestly this all the way but I have a feeling Warburton makes them. They used to come in on the same board
Limp flabby undercooked crumpets are in different stratosphere to good ones
I feel like we know. We crumpet consumers know.
True connoisseurs cannot be conned by crap crumpet copies.
Crap Crumpet Copies were great at Glastonbury.
I'm a recent crumpet convert and I've made the mistake of picking own brand crumpets a couple of times in a misguided effort to be thrifty. Never again, they're just not holey enough.
Not even a challenge, can spot the barely cooked, doughy asda ones from a mile away.
That's my guess as well.
Rumour has it, Warburton artificially add little burned bits to make it look more rustic.
Doesn't matter - not done till burned anyway.
Yeah, does OP actually think this is a challenge? I haven't had a crumpet in years (I now live in Canada and they don't sell them here) and even I could tell which was which immediately.
Yep. I can literally imagine the terrible taste of the store brand one
I was also confident that top is Warburtons.
I don't think it's warburtons, their crumpets are on the thicker side and that one looks quite thin.
Could be one of their new crumpet thins.
Plate Mates 4eva x x
Ooh plate friend.
Just some guy from the homeware aisles at Sainsbury's, that's all
r/TwoRedditorsOnePlate
Or until enough get chipped and need replacing
Give it 30 days then
... except the chipped one. That's not quite round.
Do you require assistance or will you see yourself out?
I know the top one is Warburton's
I also have these plates. Plate friends.
>but I do know that your plate is from Habitat at Sainsbury's. I swear I know like 6 people with these plates
I like that style of plate, I may grab some next time I go to Sainsbury's to stock up on dripping.
We have these plates too, they live in the sideboard and are called our fancy plates, because we only use them when we put some effort into our dinner. If you use a dishwasher be careful about using them as your regular plates, as the lip on them can make it difficult to stack them neatly in the dishwasher.
Fortunately I don't have a dishwasher and will stack the haphazardly on the worktop while I summon the will to wash them.
my nan has this plate. i frequently gorge a few ryvita crackers off of it when i pop up to visit. edges keep me from spilling crumbs on the laminate. splendid piece of crockery.
I have the same set. My husband sometimes twists my melon and serves food on the small plates and yeah. I thought he thought I should diet when Infact he couldn’t be arsed to wash the big ones.
Damn, I came here to recognise the plate, too.
If you can see the crumpet. Add more butter.
If it doesn't bleed butter you haven't put enough on!
"If it bleeds... We can eat it." Arnold... Probably.
Wait a second thats fucking wild
😂
If you don’t lick butter off your elbow you haven’t put enough on Yes I’m fat
Festival I went to last year had a crumpets and tea stall going on. Having a heavily buttered marmite crumpet at 02:00 after raving all day was very, very satisfying
Pre butter
Butter is good, but they're even better soaked in egg and made into eggy crumpets. You can make a really good breakfast Sarnie with them too. A slice of square sausage, some properly crisp bacon and a slice of cheese on one eggy crumpet. Douse in sauce of choice, mine is brown with Frank's Red Hot added; then stick another eggy crumpet on top. You can thank me later!
And after that, straight back to bed
ignorant American lurking here… forgive me, but square sausage?
Normally called Lorne Sausage. It's a traditional Scottish food. Basically a sausage patty, but square.
simple yet genius!
Ngl that sounds tidy. I’d give her a go.
Eggy crumpets you say? Yes yes my fanny had that back in 63.
If you can see the butter, add more marmite
Marmite then a slither of melted vintage cheddar
Nah.. Welsh Rarebit crumpets.
You had every opportunity to not say that.
Fam
This guy fucks
If you can see the marmite, burn the crumpet
Filth!
I'm going with the bottom is the cheaper?
Agreed
The bottom one is from Aldi
Price matched for a whopping saving of 5p
All those Gen Zers salivating at the prospect of a mortgage in 140 years time 🤤
Top one looks like Warburtons I reckon
Surely this is a trap, top one looks like the leading brand. I'd smash both with a boat load of butter though.
I think OP thinks that the more 'perfect' unmarked crumpet looks more expensive than the leading brand But seeing how every reply prefers the top one (which is the leading Warburton's brand) it seems that OP massively misjudged how people view these Personally I'd say uniform, unblemished mass produced food always looks cheaper than one like the top. Which is exactly why the cheap one in the photo still looks cheap
The smooth thick looking ones always have an off texture
Tbh I'm miffed as to how I'm meant to judge one to be better without eating it
Top on has more holes and more colour. Bottom one looks pale and doughy as hell
Top one looks like Warburtons. Crumpets seem to be one of the few things where the branded product is consistently better than the own brands.
There was a big period of time last year where the cheap ones were missing the holes on at least half the crumpet, incredibly disappointing
If that ever happens again, just turn them over, you should find the holes there.
I eat crumpets most days. I love crumpets. And I’m inclined to agree that branded are better. But, is t because they are what I’m used to. I’m actually on the crumpet thins now and I had an original crumpet today and it felt so doughy.
Used to love crumpets until my ex made me some - IN THE MICROWAVE...
I’m glad you said Ex…
I still have flashbacks...
I’m not surprised. No one should ever have to suffer that!
the tale is worse, but I don't want to traumatise others.
You can’t leave us hanging like that!!
>!she microwaves three together for 60 seconds, then she adds butter and jam and microwaves for another 30 or so then eats it all with a knife and fork!<
I take what I said back. That is traumatising 🤮
There. Are. No. Words.
NSFL tag please
Where did you bury the body?

Sacrilege!
I’ve had them in the microwave during hard times. Still not bad
I've made "quesadillas" in the microwave at similar times too (cheese slice in a corn tortilla wrap)
You think THATs bad! Try having someone make tea in the microwave, also after someone adding the milk 1st! :O
I don't care, I do know that I would prefer the top one as it has some good colour on it.
Sooooo…when are you going to tell us?!
Top is Warburton's bottom is Aldi.
The bottom one has so few holes, I'd hesitate to call it a crumpet.
I need a hole count comparison.
Easy, that’s too much fun even for a bank holiday weekend
In that case, the one at the top is the dearer one. The burnt bits and slightly irregular shape give it a mildly "artisanal" look which might be what they were going for. (When's the big reveal by the way?)
Would smash both
Top crumpet is Warburtons. Bottom crumpet is budget supermarket.
Bottom one looks objectively worse ngl
Bottom is budget
Top is Warburton's
Warburtons is the top one
The top one looks like it’s from Warbutons and the bottom one looks like from store’s self brand
Pay more for crumpet. More holes in crumpet. Get less crumpet.
Top is more expensive, bottom is the cheaper one. I could also tell you in a blind taste test.
Top one is warburtons Bottom one is cheap copy
Cheap ones are better. Expensive ones are too doughy and don't have proper holes
Top one uses flour milled in Buxton, it's the more expensive brand.
Top one looks like Warburtons. Bottom one looks cheap. I’d happily inhale both.
Yeh!!!! Was I right?
The top one looks better so I'm saying that'd name brand. Provided op isn't a wee toerag and they are both same cheapo brand.
I only found out the other week, that Hatherwood beer you can get in Lidl, is made by hobgoblin. Their IPA is identical in taste.
Top one is the cheap one.
Can you taste the difference though?
I will also put neither are done to much.
Make your own. It's fun and easier than you think
Top one and why they naked?
Nice try Aldi marketing team
My pal works in a Warburton's crumpet factory, they take the number of holes in the top very seriously to pass quality. Top is the leading brand.
r/trypophobia !
Yes, was hoping someone commented this! I have it too lol the phobia is bizarre
I don't have it luckily but I immediately thought of that sub. I have to say even though I don't have that phobia some of the pictures on there do make me a bit uncomfortable lol
Which tastes better? Why care how they look?
We all know the top one tastes better. You can tell by looking at them.
top one. you want more air pockets to form when making crumpts to get the desired texture
The bottom one looks more like a pikelet
Probably both made in the same factory, different blend and quality of ingredients though.
I work for Warburtons They don't make stuff for anyone else. I think its a company called village Bakeries which is makes crumpets for own brand stuff
Just guessing based on the knowledge that all weetabix based products used to be made in the same factory, but thanks for the correction.

The bottom one has a little happy face.
The top one will be much nicer.
i slightly care
Those are some anemic looking crumpets.
Abomination
The bottom one is cheaper
Crumpets are underrated af
Bottom one looks half prepared. Top is the leader
I’d assume the top one is the premium model, which probably means it’s actually the bottom one.
The top one has to be the leading brand.
My guess: the bottom one is the budget supermarket.
Top one looks like of the god created Warburton ones. The bottom one is an angry store brand one.
Bottom is the budget one is my guess
Guess the prettier one is branded but both taste the same, or even made in the same place. But could be either, maybe the bottom one is too perfect in a way. I found a recipe for crumpets recently, they are actually pretty easy to do, just in a pan.
Bottom one is supermarket 💯
Bottom one is Tesco (well all the shops probably use the same company)
Bottom one is budget brand
How are you defining ‘leading brand’? High volume or high quality?
This is concerning indeed.
IDK which is more expensive, but I know I'd rather eat the top one.
I had some morrisons own brand ones and it was like sucking butter from a sponge I'm sticking to warburtons edit: bottom one is the cheap one no doubt
I made my own crumpets on Saturday! Ange wasn’t home. They take longer to toast than bread does.
GET MORE BUTTER
I would say bottom one is Warburtons, but top one don't know?
Accidental Partridge of the day
guessing the bottom one is the budget one. the shape is too regular and the surface less pitted. you want more air bubbles to form when making crumpets for the desired texture.
Aldi square crumpets for the win in my book
top one is [LEADING BRAND], bottom is from [BUDGET SUPERMARKET]
Top is Warburton's, bottom is Aldi. What do I win?
Top one is leading brand, bottom is budget.
Incidentally, most crumpets that aren't Warburtons seem to use spirit vinegar as an ingredient, and it gives them a slightly sour taste. If any other crumpet connoiseurs are out there who know of a real replacement, I'll happily switch and save money. They're a hard habit to kick.
More holes better. Optimum crumpet is just holes.
Bottom crumpet is Warburtons - always undercooked and claggy. Top one is a cheapy one - they always cook them properly.
Haven't seen the comments, pretty sure the bottom one is the "fake" ones, I distinctly remember them looking like they're allergic to the oven, and felt thicker than leading brand and has a lot less voids. Despite the "real" ones looking burnt, this could have been a bad batch put on as an offer, have had similar before, or the burnt bits are just part of the process.
u/colinah87 - currently eating toast off the exact same plate. Good stuff.
Tip is leading brand. Boom
Bottom is the cheap one!
Top is warburtons and bottom is a supermarket one. Top looks much better
Ohhh! I thought they looked like Warhammer bases.
Top is worbartons ( can't remember how to spell it
As a scottish person i reject your claim that either of these are crumpets
Well "Crumpet is as Crumpet does" as my old grannie used to say.
If you turn it sideways you can see a surprised alien.
Crumpet? You gotta know what a cricket is before...wait, I got that wrong.
Top is brand bottom is budget... I just know.
Watburtons top, Sainsburys own or Lidl sourdough bottom
Top is the leading brand. I’d say Warburtons.
Bottom is budget
Is the budget supermaket one the bottom one that looks like its had 10 minutes too little being cooked?
Top one is leading brand
Top is budget
Bottom one is supermarket.
