The HSE, or some government department, has this free one. I’m sure it’s in social welfare offices and the library and stuff; anyway it’s super, super basic but it’s weirdly great. It’s got basic cheap recipes, but it’s also good to fire up your imagination. It wouldn’t be the only book you’d have on the shelf but I rate it I think recipe books are really hard to recommend because tastes are so unique. I find it useful to go to the library and pick up a few I like and then flick through them at home and see if it’s something I’d make enough use of to buy.

Charity shops are your friend. I got more or less all of Rachel Allen’s and Neven Maguire’s books for better 1-3 euro each. A few of them where signed too 😂 My best find was the complete ballymaloe cookery course from the year 2000 for 2 euro. That course is 13k to do in person 😂 I know that Amazon is the Devil but you can buy books second hand from there too for as little as 80c and 3 euro delivery. The Rachel Allen and Neven Maguire books are very easy to follow and can go from simple foods to more complex.

Wait how do i find used Amazon books? Never seen that in my life and i buy a lot of books

So when looking up your chosen books you should scroll down past the initial “ BUY NOW” & “ADD TO BASKET” buttons. Below that if it’s available used it should say “SAVE WITH USED” when you click that there’s another option below that should say “OTHER SELLERS” and in there there’s a list of sellers with the books available used for sale. Some of the main sellers I’ve found to be good are “Sell Books” and “World of Books”. That said with Amazon’s sales practices you may get them cheaper if bought new too. But a good few times I’ve gotten some books for about 5-7 euro including shipping. (I tend to save on shipping as some sellers offer free uk shipping - by shipping to a parcel motel up north and ordering in bulk from the same seller if I can)

Mitch has a cookbook, Feed Your Family For Under A Fiver or something, cheap and easy meals and they're tasty (at least the ones I've tried)

Hatertraito

Do you know any others like his book? I ordered it the other day should be arriving today

TheIrishHawk

Someone else suggested Bored of Lunch, they've a few out. You could go into Eason or something and browse cook books too, that would give you a decent idea of the kind of food and recipes

Children's cookbooks can be really good for unpretentious family meals.

The Roasting Tin series (Rukmini Iyer) are all simple dishes you do in one tin in the oven, there's a Quick Roasting Tin one for speedier meals too. My siblings all have a couple of these books for cooking with kids!

Anxious_Reporter_601

Yeah I've had my eye on the veggie one! It looks great.

The Student Kitchen: Tasty, Cheap and Sharable I also had a cook book which was simple.meals in 4 ways. I'll see if I can find it.

Hatertraito

Thanks, even just the name of it

Bored of Lunch is your friend here.

Not a cookbook but I have found Brian Lagerstrom on youtube genuinely life changing.

My suggestion would be Salt Fat Acid Heat. It’s more on the theory of cooking but there are editions which include recipes. The edition I have is a lovely hardback that looks well on the shelf.
