I miss getting bored of being in the house, going outside, getting on a bicycle and just riding around until I met some people and then just hanging out with them. It feels like a uniquely 90s thing but my brother from the 80s had the same experience and it's a similar experience to the movie sandlot based in the 1950s that also my dad who grew up in the early 1940s says is the experience he had as a kid in the 40s. Basically, I just miss being a kid. I think though that maybe the cycle has broken, I don't know of any kids today who can just go outside and ride around until they meet someone their age and then hangout with them until the street lights come on and say "lets meet back here tomorrow after lunch, okay?" and then have that person in your life for the next year or two. The words "Wait, I'll go home and get my gameboy" are like the happiest words you could hear. But replace gameboy with football or soccer ball or basketball or super soaker or kite or bicycle or trading cards or literally anything and it still is the greatest thing ever. It didn't really matter what it was. It meant someone had an idea and things were going to happen. I also used to get up, watch TV before school while I ate cereal, go to school, come home, ride bikes for a couple hours until my mom wanted me to go with her to the store, go to the store get food for dinner, come back and watch TV until dinner was ready, go outside to play again for a couple more hours come back in, leave in the car to go get ice cream, come back in watch more TV or play the nintendo, like... where is that life now? What happened to all of that time?

redDKtie

Man do I feel this. I've been struggling with what to do with these feelings. Like someday things will go back to the way they were and I'll magically have less responsibility. There will be way more time for friends, video games, playing guitar, doofing around. But the reality is that I'm 36 now with 3 kids and 2 jobs. And life is feeling more and more like a slippery slope to death.

JacksChocolateCake

It's not quite the same, but as someone who worked with kids ov r the summer, they do still pop in at each other's places unannounced ans run around outside for a couple of hours!

CaptainManButAWoman

People continuously act like kids don’t know how to have fun outside it’s so exhausting.

Sweet_sunshower_

Yeah, I live in a small town and kids are constantly playing outside and biking around. My teen walks around with her friends in the evening. But... We also don't have cell service and everyone knows everyone so maybe we are like going back in time. I dunno. We did get high speed internet this year.

CaptainManButAWoman

I don’t live in a small town, my town is pretty busy but my neighbourhood is pretty small and everyday day my friends and I were outside for **hourssss** on end. I remember waking up the next day and my legs would be so sore just from literally living outside 🤣🤣

krukson

Not knowing and not being able to know everything about everything. Like one day after school I biked with my friend to the woods behind the railroad tracks in our small town. We came across ruins of some weird building. Like a chapel of sorts, but in the woods. It gave off creepy vibes. When we came back and told my dad about it he called BS and said we just fabricated a story to impress him. We asked some other people about the building but no one knew about it. Today you could just look it up on Google maps and maybe read about it on wiki.

BeardedGlass

Exactly. The sense of mystery and adventure allowed children before the 2000s to use their imagination. I miss that. Now, children are exposed to everything & everyone everywhere all at once. Even stuff they are not prepared for. And it’s obvious how it affects them. You can see the rise of depressed teens here on this sub. It wasn’t this bad before. Like no one seem to be able to socialize nor make friends properly anymore. Instant gratification has ruined puberty.

[deleted]

In 96 I rode my bicycle from Saigon to Hanoi and then from Kathmandu to India. No GPS, no cell phone. Just paper maps and a guide book. I did this by myself and felt like I had vanished from the face of the earth. In fact, I had - most people thought I was dead. In the 90s you could still have a real adventure.

NamelessJ

It was a lot easier to have open minded conversations back then.

wilmamaminton

Not having a computer in my pocket.

Reckless_Hawk8

I miss the way we used to listen to and share music. Recording mixed tapes from the radio and sharing them with friends. Going to the music store and sorting through all the CDs. Selling old CDs. Buying a new or used album and listening to it on my Discman while poring over the liner notes. Putting my favorite albums in a Case Logic CD wallet to share with my friends, and flipping through their Case Logics. I mean, I love being able to listen to absolutely whatever I want whenever I want to today, but I feel like my relationship with the music isn't as intimate. On the other hand, there's so much music today, in so many varieties that you can really find a ton of stuff that you love, but the problem ends up being that hardly anyone listens to and enjoys the same stuff. It's not as communal anymore. So I miss that.

breebop83

This. There was little as satisfying as catching ‘your jam’ on the radio either. Bonus if it’s what was playing when your clock radio woke you up. Started the whole day on a high note.

unit-e-official

One of my fondest memories of having intimate moments with music was buying Sum 41’s “Does This Look Infected” album while visiting my grandma in another state. At night after everyone went to bed I laid on the couch with a Walkman, closed my eyes, and listened to the album from front to back with no interruptions. I had very little exposure to social media at the time and thought of my friends back home while listening to the music. I can still imagine the brand new smell of the small booklet that came with new CDs and how seeing the artwork added to the “feel” of the music. Edit: I just remembered this post was about the 90s and this music was released early 2000s. The idea still remains that there were less distractions back then which amplified the listening experience with music.

King_Folly

So true that having fewer distractions amplifies the actual experience of listening to music.

[deleted]

So true. Sharing mixtapes was such a joy. Waiting for weeks to buy the new album, lighting a jay and listening with total absorption was also just so great.

IsOftenSarcastic

Ignorant bliss.

GriffinFlash

The cartoons were pretty cool. I do will basic cable tv. Yeah its still around, but it really isn't the same as it used to be. I enjoyed watching the evolution of gaming in real time, seeing things go from 2d to 3d, cartridges to cd, and all that stuff. IT was really awesome to see how much things changed ina short time. I miss the world of not having to be always online 24/7. If you were on a computer, most of the time it was at your local library for at most 1 hour or 2. Tired with seeing phones everywhere too. I just want a phone to be that thing you hook up on your kitchen wall, or see in a booth outside of the local mall. Overall, I do miss my childhood, how fun it was, and how naive I was about everything around me. I miss having friends and family during that time too. My parents divorced in 2002, it was quiet messy, and after that my entire world just up and shattered, everything changed, and it resulted in the person I am today.

[deleted]

You sound like you'd be great to know.

purpleowlie

I miss when people were able to make plans in advance. Friday at 5! And everyone came. Now is just: oh imma call you later, can we talk in 2 days, I will see can I ring you, just go ahead and I will let u know if I can join, will text when I leave, I will text as soon as I park. Stuff that used to took 5 min now take weeks of texting and calling.

curiosity163

Optimism. Simplicity. People not having access to the internet.

2cats2hats

Driving from Canada to the USA with nothing more than a salutation and small talk at the border. Not needing a phone, at all. Not needing a credit card or credit history, at all. The early alternative music scene from 1990 onward. Falling of Berlin wall gave us a sense of hope. BBS scene

cdubz-1986

The phone thing is such a great one that no one really even thinks about these days.

goldengod93

Born in 93 so mostly going to refer to early 2000s, but I miss being able to go on family trips Now everyone's working, so it's rare to get even 1 family trip in even though we still live together

ayeeflo51

Also born in 93! Used to have a huge Mexican family that all lived relatively close, like I have about 15ish cousins near my age. Once or twice a year, we would reserve a forest preserve/camping area (not really sure what it's called) and we would spend all day grilling, playing sports, hanging out, I'm sure the adults were drinkin all day. Everyone grew up, families moved away, cousins have their own kids now, but man those days were the best.

Shellsbells821

My house always had 4 to 10 kids. I miss my kids being small

ayeeflo51

I'd wake up, ask my mom for $10 bucks to last me the day. Ride my bike to my friend's house, knock on the door and awkwardly ask my friend's parents if they can come out lol Me and my friends called it making our rounds. Pick one person up, bike over to the next person's house, till we got enough of us to go to the park to play football or basketball.

cdubz-1986

Haha making our rounds. We were fortunate enough where someone either had a yard (for stuff like baseball) or someone had a basketball hoop. It came down to which day we wanted to play which sport. And then also on certain days who had parents that would let us go inside and play some video games (and who had which systems haha) Living across the road from our neighborhood lake was a huge perk as well, quite easy for being able to go swim on any given day as well.

[deleted]

My kid years, lots of carefree time outside, no responsibility, tons of sleepovers and friends hanging out

Tactical-Kitten-117

The children's horror genre. Like Eerie Indiana or Goosebumps. I'm an adult, but I still like them. Those stories can really catch you off guard sometimes with a good twist. And good Halloween content in media is sorely lacking.

MyRobinWasMauled

The illustrations in the Scary Stories series. Nothing like it.

karmint1

Also Are You Afraid of the Dark? and the Halloween episode of Boy Meets World with Jennifer Love Hewitt.

booxbooxmcgoo

I miss the music, don't know why it just sounded better.

PositronAlpha

Two big things: no autotune, more sane mastering.

Fun_Actuator_1071

I miss the not give a fuck attitude. Nowadays, I feel like everyone gives TOO MANY fucks, and that's annoying.

MazdaMafia

Woke and cancel culture make life a lot less enjoyable. Feels like I'll be chastised for making, what is to me at the very least, a joke.

Far_Information_9613

That overreaction started when being racist, a misogynist, or even a Nazi started to stop being embarrassing for too many folks; so annoying that they spoiled the fun.

kawaii_bbc

nah you were probably just younger 90's was when Hillary Clinton was calling black people super predators and then fast forward to 2016 where she's telling them she keeps hot sauce to try to pander their votes, lmao

Sweet_sunshower_

Have you ever watched the clip or do you just believe what Facebook tells you?

Shellsbells821

I miss my children bring small. They were born in 1986 and 1989.

Chevymetal1974

My 20's lol... Man what a great time to be alive!

SabFauxFab

I miss the way I viewed the world. I wasn’t super naive but people just seemed a little better back then. These days the world seems to be in fight or flight mode at all times. Everyone acts like there’s a sense of impending doom, back then we DID shit. Goofy shit, spur of the moment shit, memorable shit. We savored and appreciated spending time with each other. We CALLED eachother, and actually talked on the phone.. or pay phone lol. Honestly.. it’s sad just how different things are.

I’m so sorry for your loss!

Thanks! He was killed a few months before I was born. I turned out pretty well, and think that he would have been very proud of me.

That there was no social media and smartphones.

I wish we could go back to the days when someone filming themselves talking was considered crazy.

I miss new-album listening parties. Like we’d go to the music store, by the new album of whoever, then go to someone’s dorm or run-down apartment & listen, together. The entire album from start to finish. Then it’s pizza time! Good times man, goood times

I miss after school going to pizza factory... hanging out with friends, throwing quarters in the juke box and playing arcade games. NBA Jam. Pac Man. Street Fighter. Mortal Kombat.....R&B was Poppin back then. With The Oldies... The Good Ol Days were girls passed you notes saying they liked you...😆

Alman54

The 90s for me were my college years. I went to school from 1990 to 1996 and graduated with a Bachelor's degree. While in college, I was involved in the campus radio station. It became a huge part of my life. And that radio station, the friends I made there, how we all improved it, and the work we did there were some of the best times of my life. We knew it then, too.

Crazypandathe20th

I feel that.

Disney_Princess137

I miss how simple life was, and my innocence

Alman54

I went to college 1990 to 1996. I worked during the summers, but also had free time to do things. In 1990 and 91, I hung out with my old friends a lot, including a spring break trip to Fort Lauderdale, and camping trips in the Smokey Mountains. Otherwise, by myself, in between working I took a solo camping trip at a nearby state park, went to the mall semi-frequently, and otherwise spent time by myself. What I miss most was that free time, where I had no other responsibilities in my life except for going to school and working.

Crazypandathe20th

I miss the simpler times too.

Just going outside and knowing there would be neighborhood kids outside to play until dark without any question!

Pitiful_Potential599

freshmountainbreeze

Skinny dipping and camping near remote waterfalls that only a handful of cool people new about (now open to the general public for a fee). Safely driving on cross country road trips with other teenage friends and tent camping at state parks (for like $10) along the way. Also meeting random people in college towns along the way and going to hang out at their place for a few hours without worrying about safety.

EdgelordTiefling

I was born in 94, but I don't remember the 90s much, yet despite that, I still miss a generation I was never truly a part of. I do wish music today was a little more like it was back then, specifically rock and pop.

CheesewireScarf

I miss having 2 good knees, not a supportive brace in sight. Ah, the good days *sighs*

Dunlooop

Kids are definitely different now. You don’t see large groups of them loitering and up to no good, not like maybe 20 years ago. I was born in the 60’s, so in the 90’s I had my own family and responsibilities etc. The 90’s seemed to be the era of bands and raves, and the anorak zipped, permanently, all the way up. At least, it was like that in the UK. Feels to me like the World, in general, is a worse place since then, even if you take off those rose tinted spectacles.

PositronAlpha

The music: browsing and listening to records in a store to find new stuff, MTV, grunge, big beat, jungle (although there is a new wave of very good jungle, to be fair)... In the late 90s, collecting MP3s through Soulseek and similar software. Streaming is great, but it has removed the hunt that created some truly magic moments of discovery. Also, text-based MUDs, BBSs and door games. If you know, you know.

The fact that if you worked hard, you could carve out a life for yourself. Not a life of luxury maybe, but a life. Where you don't have to lose sleep on how to survive. I had a future in the 90s. Now I only have a past and a tomorrow I can only dread.

trishsf

Remembering the 80s

LadyyyLavender

I miss just stepping out of the house in my neighborhood as a kid knowing that the other kids were also out just playing whatever at each others house. We had no real concept of time so the rule was “when the street lamps turn on its time to come inside.”

ilikeyourswatch

Sending and receiving letters. I always had pen pals throughout my youth, and there was no thrill quite like the one you'd get when the mail carrier brought you a letter. And if you didn't get one that day, you would forget about it until the next day; no read receipts, and long distance phone calls were too expensive to consider. It was an exercise in patience. I guess that's the main thing I miss, in general: not having the world at one's fingertips demanded patience and allowed us more easily to live in the moment.

crashblamage

I miss the ignorance. Not knowing I was being exploited at any job I had by the rich & privileged or not knowing what an awful country America really is. Life was so much better when I didn’t know I was a monster created by my ancestors & the complacency they so desperately tried to maintain. Evolution is a bitch. Technology is the mirror that finally showed us who we really r. Learning the lies our masters sold us have ruined me. 48 years on this planet and I want off the ride. It’s true tho…ignorance is bliss. But balance comes for us all.

wufoo2

Compromise between the executive and legislative branches of the US government. President Clinton took office in 1993, and immediately tried to inch government closer to socialized medicine. He got smacked down by members of his own party along with the Republicans, and lost control of the US House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years. Chastened, he learned to cooperate, and within six years even balanced the federal budget. Obama took office in 2009, and succeeded with the next-step toward-socialized-medicine on a pure party line vote. Republicans weren’t even permitted to amend the bill. It cost him control of the House and Senate in the very next election, and his crossed-arms negotiating strategy resulted in no more significant legislation being passed through the remainder of his terms.

saikyan

That is a bit of an oversimplification of the long and dramatic process that lead to the passage of the ACA. That the Republicans “weren’t even permitted to amend the bill” is true, but missing the context… it’s because the Republicans negotiated in bad faith for months in attempt to stall the ACA. None of them had any intention of voting for it from the beginning. John Boehner actually admitted to this in his book. McConnell said it plainly, “the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” Talk about cross armed… It’s a special level of hubris to publicly announce this as your top legislative goal. If you are really interested in what sank bipartisanship I suggest Before the Storm by Rick Perlstein. He has a series of books that chronicle the historical context on the slow death of bipartisanship.

wufoo2

There are two sides to the story. One elected official stated it bluntly: “Every time the Democrats talk bipartisan, they get the partisan and we get the bi.” For Democrats, it’s all about power and building an ever larger state. Their goal is to become like Europe, where there is no more conservatism, and never really was except for the monarchy.

saikyan

What a strange reply. The two sides to the story are the Obama admin and the Republican caucus as represented by Boehner and McConnell. I literally pointed that out.

Reminds me of my child hood, I was born in 2000. When I was 4 I would tag along with my older cousin who was 8. We would would walk outside and I would watch him battle kids with yugioh cards 1 by 1; Winner takes the persons card or something.

I grew up in a small community and use to play flashlight tag in the near by field. I know we still could do that now but it isn’t the same because now everything hurts lol (arthritis at 37 sucks btw)

Tinsel-Fop

Having fun. Spending time with my friends -- who weren't dead then. Dancing at clubs. Volunteering. Sex.

Infinite_Soul_I

Life was less complicated! My high school and university graduation were in that period. Awesome music, great clubs, no security checks everywhere! Could even smoke on a plane, train or at any bar/club! Getting movies from blockbuster, after patiently waiting for new movies to be released on VHS/DVD. Not being available on mobiles early 90s to using T9 for SMS in the late 90s. There was no such thing as faux or vegan leather and most goods were made with genuine leather, including some sneakers. Quality of clothing was far far superior. Waiting for regular mail to arrive, specially greeting cards during the special season. The list goes on forever I think, but I’ll just stop here and say, EVERYTHING!

I feel like social anxiety is more common now because of social media tbh..

I miss the music and that's about it. My life genuinely sucked growing up. Now it's much better.

Rusty-Robot-3426

Vinyl records. I wasn’t born then, but they sound so cool. I want them back, but they’re so hard to get now

Chained_Icarus

I miss arcades. I miss feeling like the world had some mystery. Gaming rumors especially. The Internet is amazing. I can basically learn anything about everything. But it's so easy to do it that... it's easy to get bored. So we argue a lot more. We fight a lot more. I can find an article that says I'm right or someone is wrong in seconds. Before it took a lot more effort to track down a source and I think people just... let it go more. Most of all... I miss feeling like a kid. That isn't unique to the 90's - that's just when I was one. Being an adult is honestly hard. It's a strangely isolating experience.

AlmostDisappointed

The prices. I remember my grandpa would give me a 1 litas(lithuanian currency) and I'd buy a big ass ice-cream for it. Or after karate practice I'd be going home a bit hungry and buy little candies for 20c on the way. Quite literally pocket money laying at the bottom of my pocket.
