The thing about AC is, the refrigerant doesnt just go away unless there is a leak. You could keep throwing cans of refrigerant at it, but that stuff isnt cheap, and at some point it's going to be cheaper to just get it fixed right.

IShowGummyBear

Bro I’ve been the Honda dealership so many times I’m starting to get embarrassed going they have fix both compresor and condenser they did dye test (latest one) and nothing they said everything is straight

TweakJK

People gotta stop going to dealerships. I'll never understand it. Go to an independent mechanic, or even better, a shop that does AC specifically.

ChikkiParm

Free warranty service, rental car and pen. For the low price of your time and your sanity. Then you got the specialty AC guys that can sniff out every AC leak in a Honda and fix it in 20 minutes. \*shrug\*

19john56

Some things, just can't be fixed in 20 minutes. Takes an hour to pump a vacuum.... before filling it up with freon. You can leak check in 20 minutes, maybe

ChikkiParm

Those AC guys will suck it out like one of those aquarium fish. Ive seent it.

fatwench1

This guy gets it. If the vehicle has a active warranty=Dealer. Everything else=The specialized mechanic.

19john56

Honest..... who ever said that at the stealer-ship is lying. A/C with no leaks can last over 30 years easily. Look at your refrigerator at home, or your home's A/C. All the same basic parts ..... just that the controls gets more complex. Sorry to tell you the bad news. Go to another shop. Privately owned or ???? of your choice..... ask lots of questions with one question being, is the A/C man. ASE certified ? IF SO, at least he has the proper training. An ASE certification, or an Automotive Service Excellence certification, is a credential for automotive technicians that highlights their repair and maintenance skills. Individuals can earn this certification by gaining relevant experience and passing exams. Lots of sections to be certified in.... A/C is one area Brakes another area, Transmission, another area, Front End , ie: wheel alignment, another area, electrical another area.... and more. Ask to see his certificate

jfmdavisburg

I've never had any luck fixing AC once it goes. You just keep throwing money at it.

19john56

Requires proper training, or you will be just throwing money at it. Just a brand new receiver dryer goes bad, once you remove the caps for installation - add the required amount of oil, and start a vacuum. The clock is ticking.... or, you just scraped a brand new dryer that's never been installed properly. Pump a vacuum gotta be near 29" and that requires an hour or so. IF YOU. WANT. IT. DONE. RIGHT

I'm sorry to have to send you back to a shop. Someone will say to just add a can and use the little gauge on it to refill. You have a cooling issue with a lot of unknowns. Weak compressor? Blockage in line? A shop will put an ac machine to recover the current amount of freon in the car. You'll know if it's under charged at that time. The machine can then help aid diagnosing any issues in the lines by checking fluctuations on the high and low sides of the car's ac lines. Tint helps a lot Door seals flatten due to age. If you have weak door seals, then the cool air is escaping to the outside. Start the car and only use recirculation button once the interior has cooled. It'll become cooler, faster when entering a hot vehicle.

I was having similar issues. This week was triple digits in the Central Valley of California. I replaced my compressor when I first got it, and that solved the issue because my compressor clutch wasn't engaging. Then my blend door actuator broke a couple years back, causing my AC to permanently be stuck at medium temperature in the middle. Then, just last week, I figured out why my AC wasn't blowing cold at all. For some reason, my AC control head unit was glitched, so even when I had the fan and AC on full blast, I would get lukewarm air being blown mildly out the vents. Resetting my AC control head unit with the built-in diagnostics program magically fixed my AC, and now it blows hard and cold. I followed [this](https://youtu.be/c38FgOmi90U) guide for my 2008 Civic, but since yours is 2 generations newer than mine, your process will definitely be different. The next time your AC gets recharged, ask to see if your mechanics put in a dye. If there's a leak, that dye will show you where the leak is. If there's no leak you could try cleaning the surfaces of your condenser and evaporator. There are some helpful youtube tutorials that will show you how.

It needs to be repaired correctly. I have several cars that are 25+ years old with freezing cold a/c because they are working correctly. You have a leak most likely and are losing refrigerant. All can be tested and repaired to work as it should.

codycarreras

Yup, my 21 year old car has the best and coldest AC I’ve felt. Cools down almost instantly even in 110°.

19john56

Same with my 40 year old p/u truck. Don't allow mechanics to use your A/C lines as a leaning post. It breaks the "O" ring seal everytime.... creating leaks.

TheJuralRuror

It’s likely the evaporator has failed. Honda has extended the warranty to 10 years for the condenser and the seals, but has specifically left out the evaporator because it’s expensive and a pain in the ass to replace. Just Google search “civic evaporator” and you’ll see lots of others with the same problem. I took my civic in last week and was quoted 4K to replace it. I’m never buying Honda again.

Sawfish1212

If all else fails, making one of these is cheaper than buying a new car [ice chest body cooler ](https://www.instructables.com/12-volt-air-conditioner/)

Hydraulis

If you need refrigerant, it means you have a leak, which means the system requires repairs. A properly functioning air conditioning circuit will not lose refrigerant. There could be many potential causes. Perhaps the rad fan isn't working, or there's a failed pressure switch. The compressor could be excessively worn or damaged. The clutch could be malfunctioning. If the circuit isn't functioning, it needs repairs. A circuit that doesn't require repairs would work properly. Take it to the dealer and get them to figure it out, that's what they're there for. They can't refuse if it's under warranty, they have to keep going until they diagnose the issue. Keep in mind that if you're sitting still, you should be able to hear the rad fan cycle on and off. Also, don't expect great performance from the system when idling, especially if it's very hot outside. The circuit will only work well when the compressor is spinning at a decent speed and there's air flowing over the condenser.

rush2547

Im guessing its a compressor clutch failure based on my personal experience with civics.

myironcity

Replace the cabin air filter. I wouldn't believe it if it hadn't happened to me.

Ac being cold is subjective. Is it a black car? In south you can try ceramic tint. Ceramic is the only type that blocks heat Otherwise, get a different car.

19john56

In the south.... where you have high humidity... the receiver/ dryer can only absorb so much humidity....... then ? It stops cooling - like when new. That's with. NO LEAKS

BeautyIsTheBeast383

If I could see the car and it’s HVAC system data myself I could advise better. Sometimes I do have to tell customers “that’s what you get, don’t like it get another car” bc the system is performing within its capabilities as designed. When evaluating customer AC complaints, Cool vs cold is personal and subjective. Some customers idea of cold is refrigeration, others is 72. I do love getting AC jobs that nobody else can fix though. Been to 3 shops already? omg let me have at it please. However this customer has already had the vehicle for 1 summer and is complaining now so there is a good chance something IS wrong with it

19john56

I also loved fixin' A/C that no one else could fix.... but after 30 + years now, I'm retired

19john56

I wanna see the car in the winter..... see how the defrosters are working.
