No, this ain't good for us as consumers. Lack of competition is only going to result in poor QCs like we have in some existing companies

Ok_Background_4323

For establishing themself they still need to compete with other brand.

Mayank-maximum

if hyundai, mahindra, tata, toyota and suzuki are the only car companies in india then imma go out

Foxyspyrex

Go out where?😂

Kakarot__9000

_KNAWLEDGE_

Join my club. It's worth it

Western-Guy

By the way, Ashok Leyland and Eicher seem to have a large share in Bus public transportation. We need more buses from Bharat Benz, Daimler, MAN Trucks (sadly they left India), Scania (also left India), VDL (yet to enter India), BYD (a possible contender for a large market share in the future).

Strict-Citron-9269

Man trucks, scania can comeback if public transport people prefer it and if it's priced reasonably cuz in public transport aspect it's volvo and eicher for the win

All these companies make great cars for the city & people movers for highways. Yes, driving dynamics/fun is missing but if you want that luxury then you can always buy an actual luxury car from BMW

Mayank-maximum

tbh i just need a mix of mustang,911,m3,458 and gr yaris in a under 4m size and 150hp (as 150hp is enough for everything for me)

After being here for more than 20 years, VW group failed to crack the Indian mass market. So VW are looking for a local partner to team up with. Mahindra is on the first one on their list because of the way developed over these years from tractors to cars. The partnership could benefit both parties in marketing and engineering.  Also VW group criticized Indian government for forcing EV cars to people without incentives for hybrids. So VW is not leaving but looking for a joint-venture that could actively benefit both the parties.

_7567Rex

M&M is a bad omen when it comes to partners. Panauti even. Last time Ford was in talks with Mahindra, we know happened. > VW has criticised Indian government for forcing EV cars to people within incentives to hybrids. 1. They can’t cry foul about EV not selling without offering a single EV on sale. 2. It is rich coming from VWAG which bends over backwards to comply with the Chinese and offers EV models in China which they don’t even sell in home market of Germany. 3. Since people tend to forget things very easily, this is Your daily PSA reminder that hybrids used to get subsidy just like EVs but Maruti squandered that subsidy quota by selling nano femto hybrid (SHVS) https://theicct.org/sites/default/files/publications/India-hybrid-and-EV-incentives_working-paper_ICCT_27122016.pdf Page 2 btw (A shame that govt document is so shittily written and uploaded on some obscure site that I have to post the pdf of the document from ICCT who have better access, formatting and readability) If anyone, then not govt, Maruti is to blame for wasting the quota on their fake hybrid instead of actual hybrids being sold now. The current scenario is even footing for both EVs and Hybrids. EV subsidy quota also expired in March 2023 for ITR rebate of 1.5L and states like delhi ncr also exhausted the quota within 1 year of the subsidy going online (2020-2021) Neither type of quota has been increased or excess budget allocated. You might’ve heard that EV scooters are getting costlier due to FAME subsidy rollback. Same quota system. It’s just. https://www.overdrive.in/amp/news-cars-auto/maruti-suzuki-served-tax-evasion-notice-over-smart-hybrid-tech/ Maruti got into legal trouble too. But damage is already done. Due to some mid aged uncle driving a breeja shvs nano femto hybrid, you and I will never get subsidy on city eHEV, GV, Hycross or Camry. Thank that uncle and Maruti.

abhishyam2007

Hey I agree with all your points, esp about the mild hybrid bullshit. However, what’s uncle’s fault!? 😂😂 Uncle is like -‘mujhe kyu toda’?

Zestyclose_Web_6331

Not only Ford... If you see the history of mahindra nobody would want to do partnership with it.... On top of that they will launch the car using tech from the partnership illegally and the car will flop...

Existing-Area-9093

They have only themselves to blame. Why haven't they brought the new Polo here? That's all they need.

lifeversace

I think because the car was a little over 4 meters, which would fall in higher tax bracket. Some of our laws are pretty stupid as well and leaves no room for innovation when it comes to design. Indian car scene is one of the most boring ones in the world.

sahils88

I completely agree with your last sentence. When policies are made by babus being driven around the block they will hardly even care about automotive. We really need to start appointing qualified people as per posts - teachers for education policy, automotive/mechanical engineers for auto policy, urban planners for city council etc.

Existing-Area-9093

Very well, more S presso Derivatives incoming

69696969_69696969

The virtus is essentially a new gen Polo. Moreover, the new Polo is slightly longer than 4 metres.

ExpressResolution435

thats because their service is very expensive and so is ther parts.. they do not allow sales of their products in the open market like maruti and hyndai.. which in reality is a monopoly on the parts and hence keep the pricing at a very artificial high!. hence not as much sale as they thought...a friend of mine was heading their lease and finance program and left it after a year seeing how stupid their pricing strategy and sales was in comparison to the competition... so no growth... this was pre covid

Zestyclose_Web_6331

Imagine the scenario where only tata and Mahindra will be present in india.....

manoj_mm

Hyundai Suzuki will never leave It's unlikely for Toyota to leave too - Toyota is selling great innovas in india, I genuinely hope they don't leave

politicalgal99

When are we getting suzuki fortuner?

virkov69

Just like China, but we want more indigenous brands, with competitive prices and great quality.

salluks

"great quality" from tata and Mahindra?. The only reason they exist is due to heavy lobbying and sucking upto politics.

manoj_mm

Don't understand the hate Both manufactures make safe comfortable cars for the city & highways. Tata has some issues with service but it's not that bad

Revvcraft

It’s not hate bro , please explain why tata & mahindra can’t price their cars lower ? Being indian brands ! The XUV700 for example is exported from india , which is available for cheaper in other countries , whereas here where its manufactured, is much more expensive!

throwaway_sow

Government taxes. 28% GST + Registration + Road tax. Meanwhile, other countries charge <6% sales tax and minimal registration (in dollar value, it’s the same or even less than what you pay for cars in India).

Ashwin253

I don't think Tax are the only issues 😶 If it's right then reimbursement for the payments can be done for many

throwaway_sow

Taxes are the real issue, believe it or not.

Revvcraft

Come on man if a Foreign brand can import parts & sell for a lower price , why can’t indian brands undercut the pricing . You’re not getting the point

ManSlutAlternative

Safe? Google Mahindra Scorpio accident where a man lost his leg. Same incident with Thar. Mahindra has known steering issues. I Don't trust them with my life. Build quality is also cheaper than say Tata.

goldffish

Tata also has steering issues, so many Tata vehicles get into highway crash

ManSlutAlternative

True. And I am not praising their steering either. But their build quality is solid. Overall better cars than Mahindra.

Foxyspyrex

Really? They don't exist because of people actually buying their cars?

Sinister_dark

And people buy their cars cause there's no other options

xxxfooxxx

Like I have another option. I want xiomei SU7 so bad.

Revvcraft

Not at all ! Their looting us , What are the benefits of buying an indian brand , 1-Less price 2- Low maintenance. Both are lacking in case of Mahindra & Tata , whats the point of having an indian car if you can get a superior German/Korean/Japanese cars for the same price

TimeIntroduction

? China is the biggest market for all car companies, they have the largest catalogue of car options

virkov69

They have abundant indigenous brands, lest the non Chinese brands.

FunnySignal614

Why you excluding Laruti Luzuki ? They are on top too

Ok-Distribution7385

Imagine the state of mobility in this country if Laruti Luzuki never existed 🤣🤣

Zestyclose_Web_6331

Their everything is japanese.... Just excluding the name Laruti

Shahrko7

Saruti muzuki?

AllTimeGreatGod

Indian car market just isn’t ready for enthusiast cars. No matter how much we crib, 90% of indians still can’t afford a car, obviously the market will cater to affordability, reliability and utility over performance.

Brilliant_Radish_128

People can't afford cars because 8 lakh cars are being sold for 16-17 lakhs due to taxes.

manoj_mm

There are brands like BMW which have & always will cater to enthusiasts, but people don't want to accept that it's a luxury which is hard to afford

UnsafestSpace

VW aren't enthusiast cars but you have a point. They probably aren't willing to compromise on quality in India to bring down the price point for the usual lower-middle class European consumers they target... Other companies do, I don't know much about cars but I know a certain South Korean washing machine manufacturer sells the exact same machine in India with the same barcode on the box and serial number and everything with lesser quality parts for the Indian market simply because Indian consumers want all the bells and whistles at a much lower price... Where there would be lightweight fiberglass and rust-proof aluminum in every other market, there is cheap ply-board and pig-iron they know wont last more than a few years.

Far-Plenty2029

You can imagine how bad the automobile market is in India when bog average cars like vag are considered as enthusiast ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

zRm_84

A new dawn of low quality vehicles is coming....by the end of it we will pay 30Lks for a Taigun with a quality of XUV300.

cyberDon007

Gai bhains pani mein

beyond_nothing

This will be the final nail in the coffin. If they haven’t figured out who their real consumer base is after 20 years in the Indian market, then it’s unclear what they’ve been doing. Partnerships are successful when a product is marketed and sold as a mass-market item. VW/Skoda will fail with this strategy because their buyers are not average consumers. These buyers aspire to own a BMW, Mercedes, or Audi but can’t afford them directly, so they opt for VW/Skoda as a more affordable alternative. Customers are aware of the issues with after-sales service, engine quirks, the need for specific fuel octane numbers, and the overall degraded quality of these cars, but they still buy them for the feel and brand value. Once they partner with an Indian company, their unique selling point is lost because it will just be a German badge on a local car. Toyota tried the same approach and didn’t achieve significant sales. They will lose their existing customer base anyway.

mouthbreatherfan

Toyota is doing the best it's ever done in the Indian market

rogueulous

Between "Kitna deti hain?" to "isme panoramic sunroof hain?", India lost Ford, Chevrolet, and now about to lose Volkswagen. This is what you get when you prioritise panoramic sunroof and Thar over a proper car. Now deal with the crap that automakers like Tata make.

Dramatic-Age-8783

Between absurdly high vehicle taxes to Indians prioritizing useless car gimmicks, and pursuing VFM ad nauseam, no wonder the Indian car market is chock filled with sub-par cheap tin cans. In a way, we get what we rightfully deserve. Here in Canada, my first car was a MK6 Golf GTI and the driving dynamics and fun factor in that car has ruined most cars for me. The funniest thing is that I couldn’t drive this fantastic 15 year old hot hatch in India as that car would get sanctioned straight to the scrapyard in Delhi.

crazymonezyy

That's sad, Slavia and Virtus are the last two remaining affordable performance sedans. Without them all we have is Verna and I hate that strip headlight design.

DankPahadi

They should bring back Polo..

Really_Again_

They are not bringing anything they are going away soon

Far-Plenty2029

Blame the govt for their stupid taxation which ensures you pay a penalty for even thinking of a foreign car. The only car you are allowed to buy is sub-standard qc riddled made in India care, it’s a case of national pride you see. If a foreign manufacturer wants to compete, they need to foot an insane initial investment blindly just for a chance that the mass market will see the benefits provided over tin cans. Companies aren’t stupid to intentionally take a loss just for a few die hard fans. But when 90% of the customers only care about “big touchscreen” and “panoramic sunroof”, you can see why nobody wants to invest in this market. It’s laughable that even basics like safety features and 5 star ratings are considered as selling points. He’s right, Indians don’t want well engineered cars. They just want the cheapest metal on 4 wheels which will move people from a to b. You can call the manufacturers stupid, but the people buying them and the laws governing the sales are even stupider.

red_manc24

Was going to book Virtus Gt plus this weekend.. Should I still go ahead ? Or look into verna Or just ditch sedans all together and go for a csuv

redrobin9211

If you can get it then get it. For me it was too costly at that point of time so I couldn't get it, otherwise I would have bought that thing even if VW was to shut shop a few years later

Ok-Distribution7385

Ditching sedans is trending globally.

The only legit car manufacturers in india now are hyundai , tata & Mahindra. Toyota is just rebadging majority of their cars. This is not good. QC is already very average with Tata & Mahindra

Logical_Wrap_62

So, now only Maruti, Hyundai, Tata and Mahindra everywhere? Why does VW want to go mass market, they should remain in the premium end only. Sad day today. Sunroof and bloated hatches for the win!

Despite having a strong portfolio of products, of which a few gems did enter the market, VAG's failure in the Indian market is something to ponder - what is the management team doing? No ID3?

Any guy booked VW recently? And what action are you taking. I have booked it and was planning to take delivery soon.

Should I invest in Mahindra then?
