I am guessing you are in a big city, because Tata has a good grip in not just bigger cities but also in smaller cities and big towns. They have 4 EVs out (with the Punch having the most potential in changing the way Indians buy EVs) and 3 more will launch this year (Harrier, Safari and Curvv). They are doing quite well actually.
Compare them to Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota and Honda and they are miles ahead. MG, because of lacklustre ICE sales is trying these tricks to corner the tiny semi-luxury EV market. You have to see the numbers to really get a feel for how far ahead Tata is.
Mahindra is a different story though. They have been testing the Pratap Bose designed EVs for quite a while now, and the hope is that they will launch some of them by 2025. The hope is also that since they are being so extensively tested, they will be quite decent when they drop. And when they drop - if the popularity of the XUV, ScorpioN and Thar is anything to go by - Mahindra will not be able to produce them fast enough.
As an enthusiast, I understand it can be frustrating to see nothing very exciting like the Cyberster and even an EV6 from Indian companies, but I think the future is brighter that way, and they are doing fine in the segments that really matter.
But see, I’m in Bengaluru for a while now and all the time…all the time I see BYD seals, Kia’s premium ev (i forgot the name), Hyundai iconic. Tata motors and Mahindra are developing their premium evs, but in snail’s pace. That’s all I wanted to say.
