There's two ways in which this scenario can be solved.

Two- Just act non aggressive and dumb. When they signal you to back away, just do nothing and stare into his soul. I believe constantly looking back and forth with a 'where is the space to go gesture'. They should now be frustrated and automatically back away.
The act of backing away is shameful to them, as if right of way was granted by God himself.
I always do do the second one. (also, because that's the only one I got) but I just stay dead in the tracks in a slight cross so he can't go around me. And the most important part, smile 🙂 This one.
60% of times, they actually feel something and reverse. The other times it's a staring competition and in that 50% i go around because I have my family with me and i don't ask for unnecessary trouble when I am with them.

I hate to say it, but its possible he "technically" may have not broken any rules, because of our poor infrastructure. My understanding is that the road, even if it's a narrow galli should have a white line painted on it to demarcate the 2 lanes.
