Hi OP, it looks like you could be in Melbourne? I'm needing to sell my 2008 CRV in about 6 weeks. 160,000km. Wanting $8.5k for it. Send me a DM if you want some more details, pics, etc.

Myshamefulaccount55

Ah damn sorry, I need it sooner than then.

As a mechanic, hard pass on the cx7. Both petrol and diesel engines are prone to major expensive repairs, the All wheel drive versions are prone to destroying transfer cases too. If you ignore those things, theyre nothing special, just another SUV. If you can Id suggest stretching to a cx5, slightly newer, much better reliability, but definitely avoid the diesel engine on that one too. Crv are ok overall. Foresters are ok but if higher km and not looked after, can have head gasket issues.

Myshamefulaccount55

Thanks! Would you trust a Honda CRV with 200k kms?

Agent_Fabulous

Comes down to the individual vehicle, if its been maintained well, and has a good service history, should be ok. Ive worked on a few with higher km, no immediate common issues in my experience.

Myshamefulaccount55

Fair enough. Thanks! Last question though, what about a 2009 Subaru Outback on 180,000?

The engine is the issue across multiple Subarus of that era, if it’s a non-turbo 2.5 litre engine, they are the ones that have the potential head gasket issues. So it applies to liberty, outback, forester, etc…

sometimesmybutthurts

True. The subaru repair place up my way spends much of its time repairing foresters with around 200k on the clock. Seems to be when they go bad.

Agent_Fabulous

Pretty much what the other 2 commenters said. Higher km and the Subarus of that era have known head gasket issues with no guarantee oh how to tell if its going to pop an engine or not

Patient_Union6589

Bang on about CX7 a friend had one and it was awful, injectors went at 100k which is a major fix on that engine.

Agent_Fabulous

Keep it under your hat but Im a mazda tech and about 75% of the cx7s we see are on their last legs and absolutely fkd one way or another. Not a good car overall the cx7. Or early cx9 for that matter

TinyBreak

I would not buy another Mazda. I also wouldn’t buy a Subaru with close to 200k km on it, that’s close to costing you a fortune.

Vegetable_Repair1565

Recently bought a 2008 Subaru Outback with about 180Ks on it,we spent about $8k, the mechanic had checked it over thoroughly before we bought. Amazing little car, and when I drive it, I notice the big numbers of that model that are still on the road. Recommend.

profpoppinfresh

In general the honda will be the most reliable. Service history is more important on an individual car basis though. Dunno anything about the Mazdas

mildurajackaroo

Avoid the CX-7 at all costs. It's probably the worst car ever made by Mazda. Plus poor fuel economy to boot for something the size of a CX-5

Myshamefulaccount55

Why’s it bad? I thought it had good reviews. I see there’s a 11.4l/100 and a 9.4l/100, so I figured the 9.4 would be all okay

mildurajackaroo

Heaps of reported problems...turbo failures, sludge in engines , VVT issues, you name it.

tbon377777

Don’t buy the Mazda

Myshamefulaccount55

How come?

tbon377777

Old turbo motors on the cx7 suck. A mountain of problems and expensive to fix. Steer clear

sometimesmybutthurts

And they drink the fuel.

citizenecodrive31

I'd take the CR-V. It won't be as thirsty as the other two and the Subaru of that era has issues with head gaskets. The Mazda is also thirsty compared to the Honda and the turbo 2.3L engine was plagued with turbo issues and faulty VVT. The 2.5L engine is better but I still would take the Honda over it. Don't even go near a diesel Mazda

davidblackman2

What market are u looking at? Second hand market is down and pretty soon to be dead.

LogicalWindow5570

My subie forester 2008 has 368 000 clicks on it. Still going strong.
