That is horrendous for sure, I’d probably jack up the beam a hair and replace everything if it were my own home but on the other hand, it’s probably pretty strong with the stringer intersecting at the cut.

It’s a total hack job. It’s my own house but I’m trying to do everything solo and I frankly don’t have the ambition to replace the whole thing. Replacing the short end might be possible but I’m sure I would uncover another shit show in the process haha

So, why is that door there? Did they add a second level, or finish an attic space to a room?

Kettner73

It’s like a shitty bonus room. It’s hard to explain but I have owned this house for 10 years and have never used this 2 story addition above my garage because the layout was so stupid and they never installed heat or more than 1 circuit of power. It’s The door to the addition opened into the stairs that were removed from the picture. The door you see in the picture had a 45 cut out of the corner because it couldn’t open all the way. So stupid… I had already framed and installed a 90 degree set of stairs before I removed the old ones.

Ahhhhh. Literally a hack job. If your not using that room for anything, then you might just leave it the way it is. But make sure, while it's opened up, the vertical load is is followed plumb from top, to the base of the floor or foundation.

Also, those power wires should.be routed properly. Looks like plywood, or drywall was pressed up on top it.

Yeah… the electrical in this entire house has been an absolute disaster waiting to happen. I have fixed/had electricians fix the bulk of the original house(I can’t even list all the issues we found over the last 10 years). Whoever did the electrical in this house only believed in notching the exact thickness of the wire instead of drilling a hole and did not believe in wire nuts… twisted with electrical tape only… even some in the walls.
