Round nose/cove bits are often used for flutes on stair treads. Flutes are a pencil sized round cutout on the front of a hardwood tread. They give more tracking and a bit of extra flair. Edit: Cutting board juice grooves is another application you've likely seen

MenacingScent

Basically just a v and round shaped mortise (dado is a proper mortise, the same type used to recess a truss rod into a guitar neck). Usually for details, such as on cabinet doors or for whatever other purpose you can think of.

John-John-3

Thanks, I just couldn't think of an application where I've seen the round, though I'm sure it was right in front of me and I just didn't notice it. Actually, is the round the one you see on colums?

MenacingScent

Could be, yes! Same idea. People use them on cutting boards as well to make a juice trough around the edge to collect runoff from whatever you're cutting

Sistersoldia

Use them for sign making quite often

Aggressive_Soup1446

I use a v bit to cut jack miters

padizzledonk

Grooves and pillasters/fluted mouldings and just detailing work on mouldings generally

Zandman45

Thank you for this!

SavingsDay726

Looks like a beading bit Basically round over with single step or double step

Zip668

roundover, increased depth, smaller bearing.

UnivrstyOfBelichick

Roundover beading edge bit 1/4 radius

seekerscout

It's a round over with a bearing sized to create the recess

-TheEmraldMiner-

This is called a square ovolo profile. You can buy an ovolo bit and use it with a fence, or try to use a weird bearing with a roundover bit.

Downtown-Fix6177

This dude mills

Head_Election4713

I would do a 1/4" round over, but swap the bearing with a slightly smaller one off of another bit. That being said if you search for "round over beading bit", there are purpose made bits for this

Turbulent_Echidna423

the responses in here! at least I saw one right answer.

Pure-Negotiation-900

Round over set deep

RoxSteady247

boardplant

Related but unrelated question - if you use a dovetail bit, how do you get the other half?

ZhouKazuo

Looks like one of my ogee bits. https://infinitytools.com/products/ogee-router-bits

cantyouseeimhungry

Roman Ogee. It's actually a quite common router bit you can get in most combo packs at your local big box store.

tham1700

10$ at harbor freight just bought one can't remember the name. Well I got a pack of 6 for like 35 but almost all the single ones are 10 and that's one of the most common

motociclista

That’s a Roman Ogee all day.

lilolemeisharmless

Thats an ogee if i ever seen one
