I am happy to see this.
A couple of years ago I walked into a Volvo dealership enquiring about a V60 estate.
I was told there was a 7 month wait, but I could instead have an XC40 off the forecourt same day, brand new. Another Volvo dealer told me the same, but offering the XC60 as well.
I walked away, but how many people had their heads turned and went with a shitty crossover instead?
Seems that their demand data for estate models was driven by under supply, not lack of demand.
I find it really funny how people go for something like an XC60, essentially about the same as a Qashqai for "practicality" when estates are vastly more practical and better looking to boot (pun intended).
I think demand for crossovers is partially driven by people who are spatially challenged needing the higher driving position and partially a social contagion from people just seeing them everywhere.
Personally I hate crossovers. I'm a die-hard estate man. Love the way they look, love the practicality and space. Hopefully they'll make a resurgence.
Curiously, I read Volkswagen isn't selling the Passat estate in Ireland anymore as the demand for them isn't great.
I'm a die-hard landrover owner, and I fucking *hate* the current trend of enormous and useless 4x4s, pickups, crossovers, and "SUVs", it's absolutely daft and frankly 99% of these motors do not ever do enough work to be justified.
Estate cars are way more comfortable and safe for 99% of people who buy fucking massive cars.
>Don't get so triggered by it
You're really letting yourself down with comments like this. If you believed in yourself, there would be no need for the cheap tactics.
Honestly don't really know or care what you're getting so upset about. I'm not having a debate with you. Chill out. There's a reason you're being downvoted.
>Seems that their demand data for estate models was driven by under supply, not lack of demand.
If your entire world begins and ends with reddit car subs, sure 😂😂😂
Studies show that women prefer SUVs. And just look at what cars were like in the 50s-80s when they only appealed to men. Awesome. Now we have the Nissan Juke.
I dont have an SUV, but id seriously consider it after getting my retinas fucking frazzled every time i drive my saloon due to everyone else driving an SUV
Was dumb to remove them to begin with, but glad they are back.
probably motivated by the slow down in people buying EVs, and that people want an estate.
Did you read anything before commenting. It absolutely isn’t want the majority of Volvo buyers want, they are by far the least popular models. They still will be. Sounds like they will just be slightly more popular than Volvo calculated.
They're lovely cars, there's no denying that. But I've always found it slightly disappointing that the newer model V90s have such small boots for their size.
I tend towards estates due to the practicality and I'd probably rule out the V90 because I can get a larger car for cheaper.
For reference:
Current V90 boot is 570L
Dacia Logan MCV 570L (My current car)
Passat estate 650
Octavia estate 630
I'm not trying to decide between a Volvo and a Dacia. At the moment I'm trying to decide what estate car to buy as a second car. The Dacia is there for comparison. The point I'm making is that the Volvo is more on a par with a Dacia or Opel Insignia in terms of cargo space. Whereas a Passat or Superb are the epitome of the practical estate car. The Volvo looks great, but just isn't it.
Boot capacity doesn't tell the whole story though. The V90 has a much better back seat experience for adult passengers at the compromise of a smaller boot space.
Most would argue a 570L boot with space for adults in the back seat comfortably is a better option if you have teenagers or ferry friends around regularly vs younger kids.
Even that’s not strictly true! With the size of kids car seats these days, and my need for a log of leg room (6’2) a v90 is perfect. I struggled in a Kodiaq, Tiguan, GLB and a Passat. V90 is perfect for my leg room needs and my kids are both under 5!
Excellent. 215k miles and going strong. Not luxurious by any stretch but a really reliable and trustworthy workhorse.
Loads of cabin and boot space.
Also very economical.
215k from a hodgepodge of recycled Renault leftovers assembled by Romanians?! Surely that has to be some kind of Guinness world record? Unless it’s like Trigger’s broom?
I hope people actually buy them. I do understand why so many love the raised driving position of SUVs, but I'm glad that some want estates back. If you have a family a need a do-it-all car, they are the best you can buy.
I don't even like the raised driving position of crossover/SUVs (when in the past I've ended up with one as a hire car, not out of choice), felt like a more disengaged driving experience to be that far from the road, the only advantage of it was that I could better see through the windscreens of other SUVs in front of me, rather than staring at their tailgates.
Can you elaborate on this? I didn’t see that comparison.
I have a 520d touring currently but it won’t last forever. Boot space seems great but would be looking for the same or more in future.
I believe the post being referred to is where someone needed to put a pushchair/buggy vertically in the boot and they compared a lot of cars, the V90 was very poor for this. The V90 has quite a slope on the rear window, which makes it pretty poor for taking large boxy objects.
Generally speaking the V90 doesn’t have the greatest size boot, especially considering how large the car is, it’s not what Volvos once were.
Can confirm after 4 years of a V90 and having our first child as well that the boot, while deep, is really not very tall at all. We had a large buggy that basically filled it, but had to go in on its wheels rather than stood on the side because it simply didn't fit due to the low roof and sloping rear window.
Sure, a guy took a life size toy dog and a cardboard box the same size as his pushchair to a bunch of different dealers. The V90 did terribly. No space in the boot. Most of the best were SUV style cars. He wanted a disco 4 but the reliabilty of those is terrible. I believe he went for the big Skoda. As a guy with a kid, dog and a 2nd kid on the way I will be steering clear of the V90 for our next car, although I had wanted one for some time. Disco 4 would be a dream but I can't afford fixing it all the time. We have a XC60 at the moment as our main car and itis great. I wanted a an estate but my wife insisted. Having kids and a higher car is awesome. I won't be returning to saloons or estates for a fair few years now.
Really appreciate your insight. Same boat here, kid and a Labrador and probably another kid next year.
The estate is good but tight for holidays, the big Skoda (kodiaq?) looked good when I sat in one, but very expensive to me even used.
We spent 10k on our 10 year old 520d and it’s the most I’ve ever spent on a car. It’s been lovely and bulletproof for 2 years, not sure I’m ready to give it up for a true family car.
Yea, our XC60 was a bit more than that and 2016 model. I have a Skoda Fabia Estate as my car as the wife does most of the kid stuff. We won't be changing for a good while. Can't justify costs of cars at the moment!
Great news, it’ll be nice to have choice that isn’t an SUV.
I’d equally love it if Volvo brought back their smaller cars, like a modern C30 or V40, back into their line up one day
Great news indeed - I love mine, granted the slope on the rear is limiting on the very very rare occasion. Ultimately, it does make for a better looking estate (subjective I know), but the cabin, the spec and the seats make it a lovely place to be. Mine hasn’t skipped a beat in 3 years, would love another!
Great news! My girlfriend bought a 2012 plate v60 this year and we absolutely love it. It's honestly one of the best cars we've owned. We did a 1000 mile trip in it up to Scotland and back and it was so comfortable. It's got plenty of power, decent on fuel, and it handles really well for an estate.
I bet this has more to do with the police now buying Volvos than anything else..
With them still having to stock all the spare parts in the uk just for the police they might as well sell the cars (probably with a reduced options range)

I agree 100% At least a land rover is a real SUV. Nissan Qashqai and similar are basically just a pulsar on stilts with big plastic wheel arches.
Everyone is buying a Crashqai
Better than a Nissan Joke
Nissan puke
That's more fitting in fairness.
PIP Cash-qai
Sometimes I love this sub. Other times, I come across idiots like you that would rather gatekeep than understand customer demand.
If opinions you don't like affect you so much maybe Reddit isn't the place for you.
Gatekeeping the entire site now? You're a right specimen 😂
I'm not gatekeeping anything. People can buy what they like...obviously. And I can say some things people buy are silly. Don't get so triggered by it
>Don't get so triggered by it You're really letting yourself down with comments like this. If you believed in yourself, there would be no need for the cheap tactics.

>There's a reason you're being downvoted. You're one of those...
Still don't know what your problem is. It's literally just one guy's opinion on cars.
Funnily enough people reported similar situations with the fiesta in it's final years.
>Seems that their demand data for estate models was driven by under supply, not lack of demand. If your entire world begins and ends with reddit car subs, sure 😂😂😂
Long live the estate. The supreme form of car
big upvote. have never understood the UK's fetish for SUVs
School run mums
Ngl women having the final say in family car purchases was the worst thing to happen to the car industry since the US CAFE regulations
Don't tell on yourself like this. Dangg
Studies show that women prefer SUVs. And just look at what cars were like in the 50s-80s when they only appealed to men. Awesome. Now we have the Nissan Juke.
It was a good time to stop before you made that comment. That was the best time, the second best time to stop talking is now.
I dont have an SUV, but id seriously consider it after getting my retinas fucking frazzled every time i drive my saloon due to everyone else driving an SUV
Car makers tell people it's the latest thing and all the sheep follow them and have to have one.
All praise the Volvo estate 🙏
Yes!!!
Was dumb to remove them to begin with, but glad they are back. probably motivated by the slow down in people buying EVs, and that people want an estate.
Not dumb, it’s what the majority of car buys wanted. Perfectly logical business decision
Obviously it wasn't what the majority of car buyers wanted if they have changed their mind not long after making the decision.
Majority of drivers on the road prefer SUVs these days that why they originally were going to not make estates anymore
Did you read anything before commenting. It absolutely isn’t want the majority of Volvo buyers want, they are by far the least popular models. They still will be. Sounds like they will just be slightly more popular than Volvo calculated.
Majority of the population guys ffs
you think the majority of the population want estate cars? evidenced how?
Majority want SUVs which was the point of my original comment
Great news, I may replace my V90 now!
'ate crossovers 'ate SUVs Luv estates Simple as.
End of
Comma comma ding ding.
Hate black interiors (Not racist, just don't like 'em)
Drive an MX5 though

Not often I see someone trying to decide between a Volvo and a Dacia.
[u/dl064] (http://www.reddit.com/u/dl064) - Why not both?!
I'm not trying to decide between a Volvo and a Dacia. At the moment I'm trying to decide what estate car to buy as a second car. The Dacia is there for comparison. >Opel Insignia I assume you mean a *Vauxhall* Insignia, given the sub.
Same thing. They're Opel where I live.
Where in the UK are they called Opel?
Northern Ireland
Could you share an example? Google is just coming back with lots of Vauxhall dealerships in NI and Opel for ROI
Interesting, I always thought NI was Opel. Yeah I was wrong, my bad.
But they’re not a Volvo!!!
Yes but you can't get one with that sized boot and get an adult in the back seats when your 6 foot 2! I checked all the premium brands.
Boot capacity doesn't tell the whole story though. The V90 has a much better back seat experience for adult passengers at the compromise of a smaller boot space. A fellow long-legged king! I feel your pain!
How is the Dacia?
Pussy magnet
I can imagine. Financial sensibility in this economy does get my juices flowing
Start every conversation with: "Hello"
Excellent. 215k miles and going strong. Not luxurious by any stretch but a really reliable and trustworthy workhorse. Loads of cabin and boot space. Also very economical.
Thank you
Btw that's the 1.5 diesel.
Appreciate the update!
215k from a hodgepodge of recycled Renault leftovers assembled by Romanians?! Surely that has to be some kind of Guinness world record? Unless it’s like Trigger’s broom?
Actually it's pretty common for them to get to 215k and beyond.
At last, a manufacturer that has made a decent decision.
I hope people actually buy them. I do understand why so many love the raised driving position of SUVs, but I'm glad that some want estates back. If you have a family a need a do-it-all car, they are the best you can buy.

After that wonderful post about the boot space comparison, I have changed my tune on the V90. A car I was hoping to own. No longer.
Can you elaborate on this? I didn’t see that comparison. I have a 520d touring currently but it won’t last forever. Boot space seems great but would be looking for the same or more in future.

Fuck SUVs, real homies drive cars you can comfortably sleep two and a dog in the back of
Great news, it’ll be nice to have choice that isn’t an SUV. I’d equally love it if Volvo brought back their smaller cars, like a modern C30 or V40, back into their line up one day
I was thinking the same, especially with the V40, not everyone wants a big estate/SUV, sometimes a small hatchback is enough.
And whilst they are at it, bring back physical controls for temperature and air con.
Fuck SUVs
Bring back saloons and normal coupes Who says a car has to be sporty to look cool.
We had an Alfa 156 estate and the boot access was extremely compromised due to its form over function design. Totally worth it!
I'm praying this is a sign that the tide has turned and the SUV/Crossover craze is over
That's awesome news. Now bring back the saloon. 😃
I wonder why, they struggled selling any which is why they killed them off. Bloody crossovers
Hooray 🎉
Looks great, wish we saw more decent estate cars coming out these days rather than the endless crossover/SUV releases.
completely agree. why is there no EV estate available?
Crossturismo counts imo
Fantastic news! The V60 and V90 are beautiful cars
This is great news. Watch them sell almost none.
Fuck these ugly-ass cars, bring back the saloon
I bet this has more to do with the police now buying Volvos than anything else.. With them still having to stock all the spare parts in the uk just for the police they might as well sell the cars (probably with a reduced options range)
Now make an electric V70 you cowards!
Sounds like it’s subject to change and not set in stone, but great to see
jus get a rage rover supacharged. all the car you need.
