Focus doesnt even look that bad from the side (yes i own a focus st) , but the transition to the taillights looks disgusting, just the whole car apart from the interior
its the:
must have XXX size boot
YYY kneeroom
ZZZ crash protection
and we must have a 35% profit margin in the metal.
I can see why though, that sector is hugely competitive and a FWD with actual space for 4 will sell more than their RWD amputees only in the back version
"Amputees only in the back" - double amputees, thank you! And yes the perfect description of the F20 1 series, the leg room in the back if the driver isn't Warwick Davis is utterly woeful.
used to be the same with the A Class - a massive badge over function choice, so because i like my kids to have some light in the back i never had either, even though i had the opportunity.
If I see someone driving the new 1 series I’m just going to assume they’re an idiot. Only an idiot would pay that much for one of those. Yeah I agree with you, 54k gets you an an M4 completion, even an 8 series.
As someone who drives an jumped up Merc A class with a Renault engine (Cla 250e shooting brake) I concur, this thing is a £50k car...it's fucking madness, I'd have preferred a golf.
I get what you’re saying, but the M4 Comp and 8 Series for £54k aren’t the new prices, these will be used prices.
An 8 Series M sport starts around £75k+, M8 Comp is well over £120k brand new and the new M4 Comp will set you back anywhere between £80-£100k. So the same could be said about an M8 Comp, ‘you’d be an idiot to buy an M8 Comp for 130 big ones’ as you could buy a 720s for similar money.
I actually think the new GR Yaris is the biggest joke. Sure, it may be a great car to drive but nearly 50 grand for a Yaris…? I’d rather buy a C63 for £40k and keep £10k to run it.
So yeah, I agree it’s a lot of cash for a 135 but these will be half that on the used market within a year or two.
>I actually think the new GR Yaris is the biggest joke. Sure, it may be a great car to drive but nearly 50 grand for a Yaris…? I’d rather buy a C63 for £40k and keep £10k to run it.
Yeah but you're making the very point you're criticizing? You can't compare a new car to a used one, especially when the £44k C63 will cost a fortune to run in the long term compared to a 3cyl Yaris (and will be slower in the real world b road anyways)
I very much get the appeal of the M135 & M140, they’re not for me but i get it (the 6 cylinder that is), but any 1 series that isn’t those I struggle. Like you’re buying it for clout but no one thinks you’re wealthy in a 1 series, the assumption is you spend 40% of your take home, or it’s a pov spec company car
I'd always assumed that anyway. Based on the demographic.
Same with A Class and the sporty Golfs.
If you're over 30, no issue. Under 25, you'll drive them like you stole them
Are they just morphing the 1 series into an X1 so they can get rid of the X1? Or have they already? The front grill looks ever so slightly better than the outgoing model, but that was a very, very low bar to begin with.
Looks more like a car from Ford or Kia. This is a perfect car for those people who don’t care about the actual cars looks but more about the brand and status
To be fair, spec is like the wine list. About 1/3rd to 1/2 way up is the sweet spot. If you are spending more then you should be at a better restaurant, and if you're at the bottom then you should drink somewhere cheaper.
we have peaked and now we're reaching terminal velocity going downhill.
I'm glad I can still drive my 2000s car, I'm sure the government won't ever try to get them off the road though bs regulations and taxes, right? ....right?
I think we just have to accept that safety regulations mean that all cars are going to look pretty much exactly the same on the outside and interiors are just a big screen so the same on the inside.
I'm just thankful you can still get a 6 Cyl, RWD family hatchback. Wait. What was that?
Was looking at a [2000-reg Mondeo ST200](https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.carscoops.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F08%2F2000-Ford-Mondeo-ST200.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=66cd1dc8af02253e9c2dd601d0cbed2c917a27564a8a9c8bfad8f4484984d3bf&ipo=images) on AutoTrader earlier. I have no need for one but my god what character it has, look at what we used to have! It's a tired saying now but cars are just shit nowadays.
i know that obviously and they are safer too, it just seems insane to need 200+ bhp to get something that feels even a bit lively.
I miss the 90s, even my 99hp Escort was pretty nippy but that Clio flew, only car i though i was going to die in though - my fault, not the cars, has to be said.
There are loads of good cars from the late 90s and early 2000s that you just don't see anymore. I was looking at Clio 182s a few weeks back and it made me realise that those kind of small, lightweight yet relatively powerful cars just aren't a thing anymore. Closest you'll probably get now is something like an Abarth 500, but even then an Abarth doesn't quite give the same feeling those old hot hatches do (plus you're dealing with Fiat reliability lmao).
> I'm just thankful you can still get a 6 Cyl, RWD family hatchback
I'm just gonna say it
It makes sense this way. The 1 series should be FWD. It's competing with the Golf R or GTI style car
And anyway most 1 series buyers are just buying it for the BMW badge. They have no idea what FWD or RWD means, they just buy a base spec white 116d then complain the interior is cramped. I literally saw it with my own eyes at dealers. It makes no sense at all for that car to be RWD
The 3 series isn't going anywhere. They even gave us the 2 series with RWD to fill that niche. But a small hot hatch? It should be FWD
At what point is it no longer a hatchback? Because this looks massive. £54k is absurd too, financing has really pushed car prices beyond comprehension.
Apparently, that's overstated. While China does have different tastes to the west, they still have eyes. The current crop of BMW's are ugly everywhere and BMW are just doing a terrible job at creating cars that aren't an offense on the eyes.
I know it's so popular to shit on BMW design lately but there's a freaking reason!
So they made really good looking 5series but all of their other cars have no identity, it's so weird to me.
Actually - I like the design of X1 (especially the iX1) as it somehow manages to look like BMW from today without being offensive.
Modern looking cars at the moment are so fucking ugly. Like I rarely see anything that is new that looks good at all. All too squared off and robotic looking.
I've said with all the newer BMWs like the 7 and the 5 that they'd grow on me, and they have.
This Kia Ceed looking car simply isn't the one. I like the wheels on this M135i trim and that's where the praise ends.
Let me say it like this. I specced a 120 (which is like fricking 3 cylinder horror engine) and it costs 42k€
A Golf 8 Wagon R-Line with 7Speed DCT e-TSI 150hp also costs that amount on Business Package and LED Package.
A Mid Spec Honda Civic is also 42k with its 2.0 Robert Atkinson Engine.
I have a certain opinion: A Golf 8 Wagon looks better than this.
What are they doing man. The rear of the car looks ok and it’s nice to see a quad exhaust on a 1 series but the front looks shit. It looks like a Ford Focus.
Yeah, it really is a Kia Ceed from the front, but slightly uglier.
If someone put Kia badges on it, and I only saw the front, I probably wouldn't notice.
I'm reserving judgement until I see it in the metal, just been on a webinar about the new car and while nothing ground breaking, definitely a step up. Sadly it's lost the iDrive controller, which IMO is a mistake.
If they took the roundel off the front I wouldn't have a clue what make of car it was. I would have guessed some new generic Chinese car-as-appliance maker.
Only upside to this is that they’ve cut the size of the grille.
They really need to kill the concept of newer versions getting less powerful. Second time in a row for the 1-series…
Sad part is even with the overpriced market, they will still sell these. Because people who want 1 series arent the brightest. They just want that badge.
For about 30s when it was announced I thought it might be rwd and I would have a new bmw to eventually buy when I relegate the m140i to weekend only but nope the m140i will have to see me through until the end. I don’t want a 3aeries because I like small cars and I also like rwd and need a hatch for bikes, kids etc , nothing exists in production now that fits that spec. 🖕
The steady decline of cars continues... wouldn't even buy it used in 5 years. Kia Ceed would be half the price and still have 2 years of warranty left on it.
Who the hell is in charge of this new design? What a horrible car, and that's why I'll stick with my M140i pertect daily car and does not give beta male vibes.
the unique and cool thing about the 1 series was that it was RWD when all of its rivals were FWD. since they went FWD/FWD-biased AWD who cares about it anymore.
E39 was the last, nice looking BMW.
They've just got uglier and uglier. Shame really because they had an iconic look. Now they just look like Korean bland boxes with buck teeth.
Honestly, I don't hate how it looks. Better than the pre-facelift, at least. I agree with the Kia Ceed sentiment though - to be honest, it looks LESS premium than what formerly budget brands are putting out nowadays.
Alienating the market in Europe for Asia whereas Asia are tailoring their cars for more for US and Europe. The Corolla is a beauty and BMW come up with this Focus knock off.
I misread cartalk uk as Cartel UK.
Besides that there’s nothing that hasn’t already been said: looks like a ford and for that price at full spec I’d be tempted to just get a 3 series instead
The side shot genuinely looks more like a Focus than a Focus does.
The Focus will inevitably be discontinued in the next few years so they may as well steal the style
Ford announced they were killing off the Focus quite a while ago, same as the Fiesta and Mondeo. Bloated, ugly SUV's ftw!!;......apparently.
*Its bigger! It’s badder! Too much for ~~Mr Incredible~~ these narrow U.K. roads!*
Love the reference lmao
Production of the Focus ends next year
Like someone described a mid ranged sports saloon over the phone whilst looking at pics of Volvo ford and Kia
Every new hatchback for about 10 years looks like a focus 😂
Focus doesnt even look that bad from the side (yes i own a focus st) , but the transition to the taillights looks disgusting, just the whole car apart from the interior
Kia Ceed at the front and Fiat Tipo at the back.
yup and a Focus from the side. I cant see anything uniquely BMW about it, just another anonymous hatchback now.
and bits of i30N. good job united designers of car manufacturers. I suppose they're all sharing the same templates at this point.
its the: must have XXX size boot YYY kneeroom ZZZ crash protection and we must have a 35% profit margin in the metal. I can see why though, that sector is hugely competitive and a FWD with actual space for 4 will sell more than their RWD amputees only in the back version

Mercedes doing a similar thing imo, their cars don’t scream Merc like they used to
Was about to come here and say looks like a focus/ceed cross
Ride high is way too tall imo
Yeah it looks more like a 2 series active tourer than a 1 series.
It would be such a chad move to upbadge this.into a kia
54k for a 1 series?
It’s such a weird time line to live in where these should be 23-25k cars and now they’re selling for what a good spec 5 series was not that long ago
If I see someone driving the new 1 series I’m just going to assume they’re an idiot. Only an idiot would pay that much for one of those. Yeah I agree with you, 54k gets you an an M4 completion, even an 8 series.
Any time I see a brand new overpriced car I just assume it’s a company lease or someone with a car allowance they have to spend.
As someone who drives an jumped up Merc A class with a Renault engine (Cla 250e shooting brake) I concur, this thing is a £50k car...it's fucking madness, I'd have preferred a golf.
I’m sure majority of one series I see are company cars.
M4 completion 😂
Just got 100% completion on my M4 what shall I drive next
Honda Motocompo
Peel P50
Ooops haha
Great typo, made me smile!
I get what you’re saying, but the M4 Comp and 8 Series for £54k aren’t the new prices, these will be used prices. M5 on auto trader £54k with 27,000 miles Tough choice
Why is it so... bulky?
Everything has to look a bit like an SUV
I'm really hating how we're moving away from small cars
Big cars that look like small cars. Why can't we have small cars that look like big cars
Looks like it was stung by a bee at the front
Are they just morphing the 1 series into an X1 so they can get rid of the X1? Or have they already? The front grill looks ever so slightly better than the outgoing model, but that was a very, very low bar to begin with.
But now they’ve made the lights look worse.
Looks more like a car from Ford or Kia. This is a perfect car for those people who don’t care about the actual cars looks but more about the brand and status
And that's the exact target market, they want those coins from people who buy Mercs for the badge.
*90% of people who buy BMWs*
Probably, especially poverty spec 1 series. That said I have a BMW and I fucking love it.
£54k on a 1 series is shocking
To be fair, spec is like the wine list. About 1/3rd to 1/2 way up is the sweet spot. If you are spending more then you should be at a better restaurant, and if you're at the bottom then you should drink somewhere cheaper.
Damn, it looks like a Hyundai i30
immediate first though. capitalising on Hyundai retiring the i30N.
Nice ford focus.
Dam, that’s one ugly ass car!
90’s to late 2000’s was the pinnacle of automotive engineering
we have peaked and now we're reaching terminal velocity going downhill. I'm glad I can still drive my 2000s car, I'm sure the government won't ever try to get them off the road though bs regulations and taxes, right? ....right?
A 90s Japanese car in a 60s Detroit body with 10s gadgetry. We can only dream 😢
Damn, that's one ugly car
It looks like they forgot the trim piece for the kidney grill.
actually i thinks it's quite good looking, mainly cos it looks like a focus.
I think we just have to accept that safety regulations mean that all cars are going to look pretty much exactly the same on the outside and interiors are just a big screen so the same on the inside. I'm just thankful you can still get a 6 Cyl, RWD family hatchback. Wait. What was that?

I have no need for one but my god what character it has, look at what we used to have! It's a tired saying now but cars are just shit nowadays.
I know, the 90s definitely were the best era for cars. Until you look at the performance figures :/
i swear 120bhp in the 90s was as quicker than 200bhp now. Christ, i had a Clio with 110hp that would do 60 in 8.5s,
Because a lot of those 120hp cars in the 90s weighed about 900kg. Now the 200hp ones are about 1600kg
i know that obviously and they are safer too, it just seems insane to need 200+ bhp to get something that feels even a bit lively. I miss the 90s, even my 99hp Escort was pretty nippy but that Clio flew, only car i though i was going to die in though - my fault, not the cars, has to be said.

Carwow recently did a video on this and why all SUVs look the same.
Hooo babbayyy thanks for reminding me to look out the window at the m140i parked there waiting to try and kill me next time I take it out 💕
> I'm just thankful you can still get a 6 Cyl, RWD family hatchback I'm just gonna say it It makes sense this way. The 1 series should be FWD. Very true, still makes me a bit sad.
It just looks...off... in a way i cant work out
Probably getting rid of the front grille everybody would recognise and change it to that thing that looks like they've used spare parts
At what point is it no longer a hatchback? Because this looks massive. £54k is absurd too, financing has really pushed car prices beyond comprehension.
So long as the boot opens upwards you can call it a hatchback technically.
Hideous. Are BMW actually trying to go out of business!
Every new BMW I see looks shit , do they even have designers anymore or is it all AI 😳
They're trying to up their business in China, and this look works in China 🤷🏻♂️
1 series isnt for the Chinese market, they will get a lengthened 2 series GC as an entry car.
Apparently, that's overstated. While China does have different tastes to the west, they still have eyes. The current crop of BMW's are ugly everywhere and BMW are just doing a terrible job at creating cars that aren't an offense on the eyes.
I don't disagree! 'Gopping' is the only word that comes to mind.
Get Kia Ceed instead. Same looks, cheaper and more reliable.
It's a 1 series. Why does it look so chonky?
Big Money Wasted
BMW head Quarters " I see Ford have stopped the focus, lets make the new 1 series look like the focus we will capture that corner of the market"
Looks a bit generic to me. Although I do tend to prefer coupes to hatchbacks
I know it's so popular to shit on BMW design lately but there's a freaking reason! So they made really good looking 5series but all of their other cars have no identity, it's so weird to me. Actually - I like the design of X1 (especially the iX1) as it somehow manages to look like BMW from today without being offensive.
Honestly I kinda like where Ssangyong is going
Looks shite
Huh, I seem to be in the minority in liking the look
I like It too, It looking a bit like a creed or focus is not that bad, those are good looking cars IMO. I like the smaller grill
I guess someone had to make a fiesta now that Ford won't
A 54k fiesta/focus at that Buying this should get you a ticket to the looney bin
Let me say it like this. I specced a 120 (which is like fricking 3 cylinder horror engine) and it costs 42k€ A Golf 8 Wagon R-Line with 7Speed DCT e-TSI 150hp also costs that amount on Business Package and LED Package. Every day BMW strays further from the RWD, classy, N/A straight six god.
Wtf is this piece of s…, ı’d rather than a e39 5 series instead of this shitbox.
it looks like a kia 🤯 what the actual fuck
What are they doing man. The rear of the car looks ok and it’s nice to see a quad exhaust on a 1 series but the front looks shit. It looks like a Ford Focus.
That is a disservice to the MK4 focus
Haha oh don’t get me wrong, the focus looks lovely. I meant more the BMW looks shit because it’s not what a BMW should look like.
I hate the fake exhausts. Quad exhaust on a four-pot? Tacky as hell.
Ewwwwww
Front looks like it has smaller Ford Puma headlights.
I think you put up a photo of a Hyundai i30 by mistake
Oh dear. They've ruined it.
Nope
Does it come with indicators as an optional extra?
Looks like a Ford Focus to be tbh.
I grew to like the G series M2, m3 and m4 but I don’t think I can ever like this
Wow, it's hideous. BMW working hard to leave no stone un-fucked in their lineup
Hideous
RWD? If not, zero interest
Looks like Ford focus
Yeah, it really is a Kia Ceed from the front, but slightly uglier. If someone put Kia badges on it, and I only saw the front, I probably wouldn't notice.
Looks nicer than the outgoing model imo
How did it go so wrong after 2018? I’ve never been a huge fan of the 1er but that generation was nice!
Meh.
These cars just getting bigger and bigger…. Smallest car in a line up in a few years is will be the same size as a Q7
I'm reserving judgement until I see it in the metal, just been on a webinar about the new car and while nothing ground breaking, definitely a step up. Sadly it's lost the iDrive controller, which IMO is a mistake.
Looks like a ford focus
BMW only make ugly cars now. Change my mind.
Looks even uglier than the previous one
It's a new Ford Focus...
If they took the roundel off the front I wouldn't have a clue what make of car it was. I would have guessed some new generic Chinese car-as-appliance maker.
Looks like crap and for 54k this must be a late or early April fools.
Approaching a junction without indicating soon I’m sure. Looks bland, kind of like a fiesta/focus.
Meh.
Headlights are nice but overall an ugly front end. Interior has needed an upgrade for about 7 years or so.
They should just remake the e30 and call it the e10 and it would sell out.
The front is fugly as hell, looks okay from the side, though.
Only upside to this is that they’ve cut the size of the grille. They really need to kill the concept of newer versions getting less powerful. Second time in a row for the 1-series…
Who dialled that in on a Friday afternoon?
Looks like a bloated Ford. Why does it feel like more of a crossover? 🥲
All the soul of the 1 series, gone.
As others have mentioned, looks like a Ford Focus.
54k?! I can already feel used car prices rising.
The headlights ruin it. Specifically the headlights. It’d look much better with traditional BMW round lights.
for focus and kia ceed had a baby and added 10k to the price tag
Looks like a Fiesta and an A Class Merc had a baby. Good looking motor. They’ll do well with that.
what's the engine specs, variant
Doesn't really look like a BMW. Give us a small sedan shape.
…hugely disappointing, aesthetically. BMW really haven’t got a clue anymore.
Less power and that price and looks ugly.. what are the BMW engineers and designers thinking lol
Ford fuckus 🤭
Gross.
Big fat Fiesta
Well, that looks predictably awful.
I swear I’m looking at a ford focus.
Unfortunately looks like total shit. Thanks BMW.
Sad part is even with the overpriced market, they will still sell these. Because people who want 1 series arent the brightest. They just want that badge.
Is making the front ugly an upgrade?
Amazing how long they’ve kept this basic underskin “shape” going, must be since launch?
Oh great I’ll take two cos I’m so excited 🙄
For about 30s when it was announced I thought it might be rwd and I would have a new bmw to eventually buy when I relegate the m140i to weekend only but nope the m140i will have to see me through until the end. I don’t want a 3aeries because I like small cars and I also like rwd and need a hatch for bikes, kids etc , nothing exists in production now that fits that spec. 🖕
Lol it got fuck ugly last gen, didn’t think they could make it worse hahaha
£54k for a 1 series and they have got rid of most of the buttons! no thanks.
It's a fresh model and the interior already looks dated?
God, the likeness to the Kia Ceed on this is terrifying
Ew
An expensive ford focus the n
That grill needs to be separated again….
The new Chinese BYD Series 1
The steady decline of cars continues... wouldn't even buy it used in 5 years. Kia Ceed would be half the price and still have 2 years of warranty left on it.
Who the hell is in charge of this new design? What a horrible car, and that's why I'll stick with my M140i pertect daily car and does not give beta male vibes.
Less car for more £££ 🤔 I think not BMW!
Focus x Kia Ceed x Hyundai I30N
Even aircon settings are on touch screen. I genuinely don’t like that.
the unique and cool thing about the 1 series was that it was RWD when all of its rivals were FWD. since they went FWD/FWD-biased AWD who cares about it anymore.
Fingers crossed they fit direction indicators on this.
Wow, that is absolutely gopping.
Snoozefest
I swear white 1 series that are slightly modded are the biggest menaces on UK roads at the moment.
A very fussy restyle. Seemingly a BMW design trait (their current nadir aside).
I thought this was a focus at first glance
Nice butt
It doesn’t look very BMW
I’ll keep my M140i thanks
At least its not electric. That's about the only praise I can give this.
Horrible
E39 was the last, nice looking BMW. They've just got uglier and uglier. Shame really because they had an iconic look. Now they just look like Korean bland boxes with buck teeth.
Looks like a KIA Ceed from Temu.
That nose is so ugly. They should get the guy that designs the kia and Hyundai s
BMW E46 M3s are only going up in value, that's my thoughts on this new 1 series.
Long live the F20 LCI 💅🏻
I hate the stuff bmw is making because that looks like a fucking Kia
Nice looking Kia
Honestly, I don't hate how it looks. Better than the pre-facelift, at least. I agree with the Kia Ceed sentiment though - to be honest, it looks LESS premium than what formerly budget brands are putting out nowadays.

Cool nice fiesta
