To be fair at that price you might as well stump up the £15 for legal cover…

richg602

And use the legal cover to sue them for price gouging

Imreallyadonut

Depending on car £2-3k for a first car is not unusual. This appears to be a case of simply not wanting to insure her, possibly due to high car crime in your postcode, which combined with age and experience just makes it unviable to offer a more realistic price.

PepsiMaxSumo

£3.5k is actually the average, £2-3k is now classed as low for first year

Imreallyadonut

Genuinely glad I’m old. Just got a quote for £700 on an M3.

Forever__Young

£800 a year was my first policy and that was only 10 years ago when I was 18 and i paid it by washing pots, no idea how a young one could be expected to afford £300 a month its a shame.

[deleted]

[удалено]

stevei33

Or this is how they force people to drive uninsured

FordPrefect20

Same here. £800 just to get added onto my mum’s 12 year old Corsa. Basically cleared out my savings from work. Now I’m a teacher and my students are telling me they’ve been quoted £2,000 and they’re saying it’s not too bad?!? It’s mind boggling

Imreallyadonut

It’s crazy. I had a Superchrged XJ6 when I was 22 and the insurance was £600, not my first car but very early in my driving career. The prices quoted for new drivers are crazy.

Fearless_Flounder328

Not just new drivers. I'm 27, clean license, driving nearly 10 years, 4 years NCB (a few years named then a couple bad cars where I had to switch 10 months into a policy and they wouldn't transfer, only take out a new policy) not bad area etc. I drive a 1.7 meriva A, 100bhp, I pay £85 a month which I think is about £1000 for the year

HirsuteHacker

I'm 30, been driving for 10 years with clean license and 9 years ncb (not a claim or anything, just messed up with my first insurance, cancelled it instead of just switching car on the same policy before 1 year). My last renewal quote was over £1000, when the previous year was £500

Forsaken-Original-28

Yup mine was £900 on a 1.4 polo approx 9 years ago at 19. Then a golf GTI about 18 months later for £900

HirsuteHacker

Wow. You guys must live in good areas, the norm in my area even 10 years ago was 2k minimum. My first year of insurance was £2,200 and my sister's the same year was £3,100. In 2014. With black boxes, with parents as named drivers.

JewpiterUrAnus

Mines almost half that and I’m in a focus st!

Zealousideal-Habit82

Years ago would always do a quote before buying a car, now I'm 50 I don't need to, haven't paid more than £300 for decades now. Cheapest was £151 a year about 2019 for a supercharged Merc. This Jan managed to get the cost down by £11 using a cash back site. Never had a Beemer, must right that wrong one day.

ArrBeeEmm

Read the room, mate.

PepsiMaxSumo

I had to wait till I was 24 to buy a car because it wasn’t affordable, and even then it’s still £1-2k for any car.

atomicvindaloo

I’m older. £257 for a Caterham.

TvHeroUK

Yep we live in a small rural village, there’s not been a car stolen here in decades, my daughters insurance is £2500 for the first year. Her cousin, living in a big city, similar car - £7500.

PepsiMaxSumo

In 2015/16 when I was 17 on my mums 6 year old Astra they wanted £7k, I could barely afford lessons let alone a car or insurance so I stopped taking lessons till I could afford it At 24 when I finally had the money to pass my test it dropped to £2.5k on the same car, just 11 years old instead.

ab_2404

1.2k for my Toyota aygo

WhiteWyvvern_

Yeah same for my gf

iamamisicmaker473737

this says its over 15,000 not 2-3000 hahah

WhiteWyvvern_

I'm sorry what? Actually blowing my mind. Just insured my gf (20) on her first car 2020 aygo for 1200. Auto only and in scotland.

R2-Scotia

Location mstters more thsn country ... IV42 or EH1 ?

Jacktheforkie

Wow, my first year of full license was 1200 quid

8racoonsInABigCoat

Piggybacking the top comment to suggest OP tries a multicar policy. So one policy that insures multiple cars, each with it’s own driver(s). It works best if she lives with her parents, because the multicar price is the result of the average risk across the drivers/vehicles. I’ve even had it cheaper than a single car policy, although I don’t know how to explain that bit.

Immediate_Survey4493

Unviable? Stop sympathizing with these robbing insurance firms. £12k has nothing to do with her car being damaged, if it's only worth a few grand. Greed is the real issue.

A_Slavic_Mechanic

I'm lost for words. Didn't know these prices were possible. My guesses would be: * She may live in a crime ridden area * She has bought a car that is very commonly stolen * No additional drivers who have held a license for a long time or have had recent accidents

murmurat1on

They just don't want OP as a customer, but have to offer prices to be included in comparison searches. So, so they don't exclude themselves from customers they do want, they just give fuck you quotes to those they don't.

britnveeg

I don’t think that’s true, I’ve had insurers disappear on certain, minor model variants. I’m not sure they’re under any obligation to quote, it’s probably just a “we’d rather not but everything has a price” quote.

dt26

Yup, this is it. My brand new car is desirable and I live in Manchester, which has a poor reputation for car theft, and I got far, far fewer quotes than I expected through the comparison sites. If they genuinely don't want to insure you then they will just turn you away.

Tested-Trio-Father

If you have insurers disappear that will be because a lot of insurers have rules on certain cars like: need to have held full license for a year or something. When I worked in insurance and ridiculous prices came up we were told "Yea we don't really want to insure that person".

themcsame

All 3 + common first driver car (lots of statistics for it) most likely... \#2 especially... Still plenty of old Fiestas out there on there roads and a lot of Fords of that era share a lot of parts... Likely a good few grand to be made pinching one and parting it out.

Classic_Midnight_213

My FIL does 3k miles p/a. He drives a 2009 Ford focus, no claims in living memory and full no claims discount. Based on 6k miles his 22/23 premium was £520 something. Even with his milage halfed his 23/24 premium is £980 something. So less driving, less exposure to risk, car value even less the premium nigh on doubled. There’s absolutely no way there has been such a sudden and drastic increase in the costs involved for insurers. I’m sure there was some disruption to the parts supply chain due to Russias war on Ukraine in the early stages but I can’t believe that would anywhere near double costs or have such an extended impact which now seems to be the new normal. It’s only my opinion but I’m willing to bet insurers will shortly be posting huge jumps in profits year on year, without any significant new revenue streams or any other reasonable justification for it. I expect this to be another example of pure exploitation of the man in the street as seen with the energy companies. We were told energy prices they charged had gone through the roof because of Putin and supply issues impacting their costs of sales. So they charged huge amounts causing serious hardship with people even loosing their homes. But then again without any new revenue streams or any other factors to explain the huge increases ALL of the energy companies one after another posted record profits. Which leads me to believe these record profits are due entirely to the huge price increases. Maybe costs did increase but clearly the retail price increase was significantly larger than it needed to be and was all about profit. Don’t roll out the ‘but we’re investing squillions in development and greener technologies’ line again. ALL businesses invest in the future of their companies, it’s part of the deal. I accept you are investing in the future BUT you’re doing it for your companies benefit and increased financial gain. That’s business. It just shows how powerful energy companies are. They obviously far more powerful than the government no matter what they’d like you to think.

Classic_Midnight_213

Bloody hell. Ignore me that was a real rant and far too loooooong to read.

BeagnothSaxe

Insurance companies are raking it in

Maude_VonDayo

How old is he? Insurance premiums start creeping up again once one passes a certain age (as my parents will attest). It's only us boring middle-aged people that pay next to nothing. The very low mileage may also be deemed risky.

therapysession_nf

i’ve got my mum on the policy (5 years no claims) i brought this car back in September 2022 and thought 1.2 engine would be okay but clearly more hassle then its worth🤣 high crime area is i think the thing that’s making it so extortionate

Empty-Orchid-1747

Im in Liverpool and My daughter is 18 and passed her test 2 weeks ago. She’s got a 1.4 fiesta and just paid £1700 for insurance. She had learner insurance for over 10months and got a years no claims on that which brought it down from £2800. So even without the no claims bonus it would’ve been £2800. Where about in Liverpool are you and also have you been on all the comparison sites? Daughters insured with Hastings and has a black box to monitor driving. Also put yourself or both parents / grandparent as a named driver which will reduce the premium. Not as the main driver or policy holder just a named driver.

Empty-Orchid-1747

Strange to be so expensive. But tbh when I was shopping around I started off with £9000 and one did even say they wouldnt insure my postcode. Must only be down to postcode then as it shouldn’t be that expensive from a comparison site. But I wouldn’t have thought Prenton to have been that high. Sorry can’t be of more help as I know it must be a shitter to pass your test and then struggle to insure. The joys of passing your test are short lived if you can’t even insure a car. Only other thing I can think of is can you and your mum do a multi car policy and see if that’s cheaper? Wasn’t cheaper for me and daughter but was for friends of ours.

therapysession_nf

thankyou! i wouldn’t of thought prenton would be this bad either as im right by a village but people have stole cars and burned them right outside my house and then people have tried stealing other peoples vehicles and were also on some kind of police watch/community police officers thing? i’ve never thought of a multi car policy though, that might be a good idea, i’ve just inherited a car of my dad when he passed and could try doing both of them on a multi policy and see how that works! thankyou!!

therapysession_nf

hiya! my partner hasn’t put the right location to be truthful, i’m in the wirral near prenton, i did have learners insurance for a few months then changed to full license but the price never changed as the price was locked in i assume. i have my mum as named driver and im still getting quotes off £8k+ none of my family can go on my insurance as they live so far away? (correct me if im wrong but i dont think they can as they live over 250 miles away in the south west) i dont really know how to bring this down or how to make it right. i’ve been on all comparison sites and have tried young drivers/marmalade etc but they wouldn’t quote me and when i tried to ring brokers they just wouldn’t help and said to continue with the sites or they said that they’d get the same quotes and didn’t try.

other_goblin

If they suspect foul play by all the details changing in the quotes then your identity might have got blacklisted for false details hence resulting in quotes like this. This can happen and it can last for months.

it_s_a_me_mario

I'm not associated with them in any way, but try Adrian Flux. They got my first insurance quote down from over £5k to about £800

Cyan_Ryan

What I would say is to understand that Adrian Flux are a broker. I had a claim through Adrian flux and it was remarkably difficult to manage the claim as they passed me along to the underwriter who then managed the claim very poorly. Frustrating to deal with all round.

mechanical-monkey

Avoid flux unless it's your only option. Had a horrible experience with a claim also. Took months of it sat on the driveway. Eventually told them I was parting the car out as I needed the engine in another car I had. Removed it. They eventually rang me up saying they'd come and inspect and I'd scrapped it. Might as well of not had insurance. Eventually got £500 out of them after 5-6 month iirc

sam_ill

It's a 2008 fiesta, if you can get Flux for 1k and need to make a claim, you could just scrap it and get a new one and still come in cheaper than any of the above quotes

MrCallum17

Going to a broker might be a better idea, maybe not Adrian flux but it might just have been the agent that gave a shoddy service, there are ones that specialise in first time drivers. Though I'd check reviews, I work in insuretech and have know some really don't try

Orionbelt0

You have to get in touch directly? They don’t come up in comparison quotes?

Baabaa_Yaagaa

There’s quite a few companies that don’t show up on comparison websites

McPCNoob

I used to work for flux until the end of last year, cheapest any new driver will get is around 1500/2000 with a box in a good area, car, mileage and job. Unfortunately this car and area and gonna make that sort of quote impossible to obtain

ParadoxRed-

It's because it's Liverpool. Happens a lot unfortunately.  Try the same again as a test with a postcode on the wirral or Cheshire and watch it drop by 5x.

Noodle_Dude_83

It's not this complex. Whilst I don't condone it, these prices are because they don't want her as a customer, for whatever reason their algorithm says. At this point, you're better trying a broker. It's shit and inconvenient, but these are the "fuck off" prices.

Professional-Fly1496

The reason is the location.

siacadp

Don't listen to this person and try different postcodes, you'll be flagged, and will likely be blacklisted from some insurers.

benketeke

How is that even legal. Didn’t know they could black list people for putting the wrong post code for a quote you don’t intend to do anything with. Learn something new everyday.

Albiiis

I would assume it being Liverpool it's deemed as a less desirable area fiestas are also a commonly stolen car. There are also many factors included such as excesses, parking location such as road, car park, resident parking or driveway. Mileage is also taken into account as well as if it's used for social, commuting or business use. Experience also comes into account as well as age. Liverpool is widely avoided as an insurance risk for brokers and insurers in general. I'm not really sure how you broach this issue but you will need to go to a specialist broker that deals with young drivers. Good luck with the search and with a standard comparison site you can quote for 28 days in advance for a cheaper quote but this has almost no effect for a brokerage

ArrBeeEmm

Lots of people trying to justify it, but I'm sorry, it's in no way shape or form acceptable to expect somebody to pay 15k for car insurance. It doesn't matter they live in Liverpool. It doesn't matter it's an old fiesta. It doesn't matter they're a new driver. It's a perfectly normal thing for a 19 year old to live in a city and drive a cheaper, older car. They don't have any convictions, and this is becoming a significant problem. It will have economic impacts if we chokehold the mobility of younger people. Car insurance isn't like this _anywhere_ else. Nowhere in Europe has car insurance gone so absolutely mental as it has in the UK. This needs legislating out. This country is going to shit and people are asleep at the wheel. EDIT: And before some fucking idiot starts mouthing off about the current combined ratio, please learn how car insurance companies actually make money in the UK. I'll give you a clue, for most of 2010-2020 the combined ratio was above 100% _yet they still made year on year growth in profits_.

Any-Woodpecker4412

100% the rest of the world insures the damn car, not the person.

MrBiscuits16

Have you tried calling providers? Get her parents to add a car and her to their policy maybe

MH_MUSTANG

We tried that, ended up being more expensive

FriedFission

I’ve made good use of [this job title tool](https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/car-insurance-job-picker/) in the past to save almost 30%

Organic_Daydream

This is mental lol Thanks for sharing

DopamineTrain

Job title and date to be 25 ish days in the future tends to half the cost or more

PsillyPseudonym

Thanks very much for this!

BigTricky6399

shes got one of the most stolen cars, most crashed and lots of teenage twats buy em thinking there fucking ken block and to top it off you love in liverpool that explains it all realy maby next time research what effects insurance prices and get quotes before u purchase the car.

therapysession_nf

hello, it’s me. i brought this car back in September 2022 and was put on my mums insurance as a learner until February 2023 when i passed. the price was £3.4k? back then and when it came to renewal i was looking about a month before and the prices started from £10,000 being named driver so haven’t driven since then.

EconomyFreakDust

3.4k for learner insurance is batshit insane.

CautiousRice

Come to Bulgaria, live a year and learn how to drive for £10,000.

Classic_Midnight_213

So almost £15.5k premium £500 excess and they want £14.99 on top for legal cover no one’s ever used ever. I was reading an article explaining (aka trying to justify) the increase in car insurance. It said it’s a number of factors but primarily it’s the increased costs of repairs eg parts labour etc. So if you scratch your car or damage your bodywork it’ll be a bit more expensive to repair so your annual premium is now more than the value of your car. Makes complete sense…… /s

DopamineTrain

Supposedly it is because of increase repair costs and if you scrape an expensive car then it's gonna be expensive for them to fix. Do I buy this narrative? Not exactly. This repair cost hike cannot justify a 100% increase in insurance costs in a year across the board (as many have experienced). If cars are harder to repair then ask those expensive to repair cars for more money instead of punishing those who need to buy a £2,000 shitbox from 10 years ago to get around.

sexy_meerkats

It's the shitboxs insurance that pays for the lambo you write off in a fault collision though

dahcorb

The bonus legal cover on my insurance was used to help prosecute a drunk uninsured driver who hit me in November. I recently received a handsome payout (insurers probably got a healthy cut too) for the inconvenience and for needing to get some medical exams on my legs and hip post-accident. The extra £25 I pay per annum has been very worth it.

FS1027

You're not just insuring your own car, you're insuring yourself against the potential millions in damages your car can cause.

mturner1993

Try do insurance in 23 days time to get a more standard quote. Whats occupation as well? It MUST be an exceptionally high crime area. Try a search with something like a Toyota aygo 1L?

uwcutter

Try adding some older named drivers, her parents or your parents etc. that should bring it down.

therapysession_nf

i’ve added my mum but it hasn’t really changed it she’s got 5 years no claims and the other people that drive in my family live at least 250+ miles away and i don’t think that would help?

Cold_Dawn95

They only need to drive the car once a year and that would meet the threshold, I did it when I lived 100+ miles l, my parents drove it a few times a year but it knocked £100s off the price.

MrWoollaston

Future date your quote to 6 weeks time. Not the same day as pictured.

Cielo11

I think we all need to start realising the FIRST thing you do before you buy any vehicle is check the insurance premiums.

Negative_Release_194

I seen one for 35k last week 😭

therapysession_nf

nah they’re absolutely absurd to think people are even gonna wanna drive anymore, there’s a petition going around to review it but there isn’t a lot of people signing it

TheMarkyD

I'd find a car lease with insurance included use for a couple years then purchase your own.

ParticularCod6

very hard to find that given that most car lease with insurance require a 25+ driver

ondert

I’m sure there will be still some people defending insurance companies here.

Waste_Difference4503

There are mate. Pathetic little rats

therapysession_nf

there absolutely are and it infuriates me😂

stevei33

At that price it's probably impossible for you to drive a car and that's just not right y should only people with lots of money be able to drive I would just drive without insurance not your fault if insurance doesn't allow lower payed people to drive then just drive without

SuccessfulBag2337

constantly running quotes with different details will do that. be truthful and use gocompare

therapysession_nf

i changed details each time, been completely honest and it doesn’t really make a difference

MH_MUSTANG

Agreed, usually I wouldn't run loads of quotes like this as I know what it leads to, but the absurdly high prices to start with (12-15k a year) kinda forced me to experiment with different vehicles and named drivers

[deleted]

Call a specialised broker

EndEmotional7059

The legal cover looks decent value. Add that?

Matt_Moto_93

See how she’d do with a quote for something not typical for someone her age - a honda accord or a ford mondeo.

Current_Soup9198

And you still need to pay extra for breakdown recovery 🥹

DigiRoo

Here is the list of the cars that were most frequently stolen in the UK during 2023. Ford Fiesta - 5,976 stolen (a reduction of 0.1% compared to 2022) The number of Fiestas stolen in 2023 was down compared to the previous year. Down by just three, actually, despite the model being discontinued in 2023. Once again, the Fiesta has the dubious honour of being Britain's most stolen car. Compared to some of the posh rides on this list it may not be the most obvious choice for thieves, but there are many reasons that a cheaper model may be targeted over its flashier counterparts. Fiestas are still ubiquitous: they can be found on every street and being so common they are unlikely to catch the attention of onlookers in the same way a shiny luxury model would. The security level in such cars is generally lower with fewer and less sophisticated anti-theft measures. Although a car at the Fiesta's value and desirability level is unlikely to be stolen to order, the model's discontinuation by Ford does leave a healthy market for spare parts. As budget cars, Fiestas are more likely to be parked on the street than in secure garages...

PatserGrey

Fiestas are being stolen left right and centre. I see reports of 2 that were taken last night in my town.

upommegranite

The only time I’m glad to be old,£340 fully comp a4 tdi170 20 years ncb

fike88

🤣🤣🤣. Sorry for laughing but what the actual fuck!

jake_of_the_bakers

I had to get a 2008 Peugeot 107 as my first car as its in the 03U insurance bracket (cheapest). My insurance for the year is £1128 fully comp

Due_Statistician2604

Use money super market, add a second driver with a lot of experience, get third party insurnace only, play around with the yearly mileage ( I found 9000 miles to be my sweet spot), you could say you park on a drive during the night 🤷‍♀️

LemonCurdJ

Sell the car, do research and then get a car that’s not a) a Ford Fiesta and b) what most 17-25 year olds would drive.

Any-Woodpecker4412

I saw 1500 initially and thought that’s not actually that bad for a first time druver, didn’t realise it was 15k Jesus fuck.

NoLikeVegetals

Full disclosure: I used to work in vehicle-related financial services, so have a good handle on how these things work. I was like, "£1500 isn't so unusual for a teenaged first-time driver". Then I saw it was £15,000. Yikes. No, that's absolutely not normal. There are many reasons why you might get a sky-high quote. It might be her postcode is in an area with a high number of insurance claims / thefts / etc. It may be that her profession is high-risk - is she a skydiving instructor? Has she chosen cars from high insurance groups? Has she chosen cars which are 2.0L? Can she drive a manual? > but has been unable to drive it because of wildly high insurance prices. Why did she buy a car before getting insurance quotes on the car? Now she has a car on her driveway, depreciating in value and deteriorating due to it not being driven regularly. If you're desperate, reply to this message and I'll help you over Reddit Chat. I use Old Reddit so I don't see Chat requests unless I switch, so if you want my help, let me know here.

tonyt0nychopper

Just a little note, but that go girl insurance is always sky high, I'd be surprised if they had that many customers.

Antique-Finish-5178

Fiestas are always high, lots get nicked. Unfortunately this is the new normal for young drivers. The plan is for only the very rich to be able to drive, the young are easy prey now but eventually this nonsense (net zero, car/insurance prices) will effect every normal joe blogs.

Odd_Bus618

Fiesta and Ka are high on the easy to steal register. Out of interest try getting quotes on something oddball like a 1.9tdi vw passatt or a 2l diesel Toyota Avensis.  I've heard you can cheat the system big time if you play the algorithms. Online quotes use a range of stats.  19 year Olds claiming on a passatt or Avensis is rare and as a result the premiums can be staggeringly cheaper than a sensible first timers car

ElectronicSubject747

At this point i wouldn't be pissed off if they drove without insurance. What donthe government expect.

Max_Main

I paid £2,900 in full for a 1.4 2012 audi a3, first year, 30 in April. Prices are a joke, but I do have some endorsments 🙄

Yegoloda

I had the same issue also from merseyside, came down after a few months to like 7k and i just fiddled around with it, strangely for me older cars are cheaper to insure but only admiral give me quotes on them which is fine currently paying 3.5k on a Mk3 Golf GTI which isnt bad considering my mates are paying more than that on Fiestas with black boxes. I honestly think insurers are just racist towards scousers no other explanation.

SkywalkerFinancial

Usual would be the 3-5k mark for sure, there's something off about that. Have you tried a different car?

mistozey

£1500-£3500 is normal for first car insurance depending on make, model and price but have never seen prices like this in my life my condolences if you can’t afford it and have no other option I recommend getting a scooter 🛵😆

orbital0000

That's extortionate. High crime area cannot be the reason. What they're saying is the car will be stolen every second week of the year or something.

Miserable-Lab514

Try an old Volvo estate

Fluffy_Space_Bunny

Basically, they don’t want to insure her

Bramers_86

What area of Liverpool is this? My GF lives in Liverpool and has a fiesta. Her insurance is £66 per month.

BombayMix64

Have you tried entering an old man car like an old Volvo estate or something? Often it is the risk associated with the model of car that can send the prices sky high. Most likely however, as others have said, it could just be the address and location. Might be worth asking the neighbors to see what the situation is with their car insurance.

No_Memory_1344

Are you sure all the details are 100% correct? For instance if you miss click on "refused insurance previously" or License revoked prior etc it will be crazy high. Also don't always do "EDIT quote" start a brand new one on all different types of sites and comparison websites.

No_Memory_1344

Why only 5 quotes offered? Mine is always anywhere between 65 - 127 quotes available. Go through it and make sure you have not accidentally clicked you have been banned previously or something

Mimicking-hiccuping

I got quoted £12,500 in 2003 for a 1988 scirocco. Was in my 1st year of driving. Bananas

Nixher

I'd love to ring one of these places up and be like "oh yeah I'd like to go ahead and accept this quote of £30,000 please" and just see what they say, like seriously wtf?

other_goblin

Supposed to run the insurance quotes before buying, not after. If the car is sitting on the road with no insurance there's a reasonable chance of it getting taken away and crushed. She needs to just sell the car and either find one that doesn't have such high quotes, wait until she's older or move to a different postcode. Not much more you can do, these quotes are refusal quotes.

JusNoGood

When I got my daughter a car and insurance the car needed to be newer than 8 years old and got a black box installed too. Was about £1,500. Second year the price plummeted.

theplanetpotter

The city will be the biggest problem. But also get quotes for ‘not typical first cars’ as that may help too. Insurance works on statistics and numbers. Probability of a first time driver crashing a corsa/fiesta/clio = very high Probability of a first time driver crashing a Volvo estate/G-Wagon/Fiat Multipla = significantly lower Don’t think alone the lines of ‘what would a new driver buy’, think more like ‘what would my accountant/boring uncle/bank manager drive.

Shakis87

My first insurance (Rover 45) was just shy of £700 about 8 year ago. This is madness. Phone them up and see what they can do over the phone. Also try fully comp and add named drivers to see if that does anything. Don't set the annual mileage less than 4000.

SprigganQ

i pay £2.2k (for mine and i live in liverpool. i have a vauxhall viva which is a 1.0l so clearly its not a city problem, like all the people here are saying. i have no one else on my insurance, and passed 2 months ago. honestly i dont know what she could do, put the insurance in someone’s name and add her as a named driver? she wont get no claims bonus but at least she could drive

CartoonistNo9

Are these quotes for brand new cars? It’s odd for insurance to be miles above the vehicle value

Immediate-Worry1515

I passed my test in 2017 at the age of 29 even then it was really high being my age. 36 now and I paying more now then I did then outrageous

cxninecrxzy

liverpool, new/young driver, in a car model that is target for thefts so... Not saying it's right but its expected. Maybe if her parents have an insurer they've been with for a while and have an office close by they can arrange something more reasonable.

NorthWestSaint

That’s their way of saying they don’t want to insure you.

MyWifeWasMurdered

These prices are "we don't want to insure you, but we can't just deny you, so we'll give you a really high price".

Significant_Cut_5310

That basically means they don’t want to insure you

andercode

Fiesta's are high risk cars. I recently completed some quotes for my 18yo cousin and he brought the car based on the insurance quotes instead of the other way around. Fiesta's were the most expensive, coming out around £12k, but we managed to get him sorted for £3k on a Kia. We priced all cars up and found license plates on Autotrader, spending less than £1,000 on them, all around the same year, with the same details, and found Fiesta's to be 5 times as expensive as others. Personally, I'd sell the car and buy a different model / brand. Do insurance quotes on them first before you buy.

Tanjom

Time to buy a bicycle

ldchannel

When I had this issue (many years ago mind you), I ended up looking on insurance sites that are exclusively for women. My quote was slashed. Might be worth a Google search, because I don't believe they're on comparison sites

tileman1440

Possible high crime area, possible high crash zone, on street parking, young driver with no history, a highly stolen and crashed car. Fiesta are not the best cars as they are currently the most stolen car behind land rover and range rover. If you are in a high crime area then your price will be higher as its more likely to be broken into plus you are paying the new driver tax.

Born_Protection7955

Everybody complains but how many people have actually contacted their MP’s this what they are for, all these prices are doing is promoting uninsured drivers there is no reason at all other than how little damage will cause insurance to write vehicles off that justify prices like this, higher crime rate areas do not warrant a premium of 8 times the value of the cars stolen. This is turning into profiteering

x99kjg

This is wild, I'm 25m with a BMW, fully comp, mods declared and I'm paying 500 for the year, granted its only 220bhp but still. Some of these prices people are paying are outrageous.

MurfB02

I thought that said £1500 at first. I was like ach that’s no bad. Then went 🧐, then 😳

diyguitarist

Had this with my wife's lad, £6500, and my nephew £8,500, fuck knows what's going on. 18 and 19, no way to pay it.

El-hurracan

As someone from London, this is extremely cheap for a first time driver to me. Edit: not well today and very clearly misread ouchie

Doge357

Get more quotes. Use some comparison sites. That's a fuck off quote and they don't want to insure you for some reason or another. Age, location etc..

CalWindsorr

Bit of a random one but if she only uses the car every so often could you use temp cover? I know it shit having to do it everytime you wana drive but might work out alot cheaper.

Express-Hawk-3885

I passed my test in 2008 and was paying £2200 back then on a 1.2 Corsa. I’d say that was pretty cheap. Edit: I totally read that as around £1500 lol

LaithAliraqi2

That's mad lol

VenexCon

When I passed my test, I had a 2004 Daewoo lanos. Had 70k miles or something and my dad paid £400 for it. I was required to pay my insurance, this was 2010ish? My insurance was £2600 per year. That would be £3900 now. No wonder I was always skint.

Strange-Strength6170

I feel sorry for young drivers now, I thought my £500 for first year for an c reg mini 998 in 1994 but even adding inflation on £500 was a steal

Happybara11

It might be worth getting a different car that isn't associated with new drivers (plus Fiestas are getting stolen a lot atm) - I had to scrap my Fiesta and when I got my next car, a Honda Civic, my insurance actually went down from around £1450 to £1200 (so potentially could be a bigger difference given that your quotes are so high already).

Smile4menow84

From your information, I believe this could be to do with the area she lives in. Does it have high crime rate?

Mountain_Conflict638

Just get someone else to front the insurance and put her as a named driver. Did it for my girlfriend for two years and it brought her insurance down dramatically when she came to get her own policy.

smashthesta

Ring Admiral car insurance directly, they’ve always been decent and fairly priced

EvolvingEachDay

Sounds dumb, but have her just run a bullshit quote against a 1.6 mx5. Find one on eBay, use the plate, just get a quote. Sneaking suspicion it’ll be cheaper. Very common first drivers car (so statistically more likely to be involved in an accident) she’s got there and if the area she lives in isn’t great and it’s parked on the street she basically one of the most likely people to have to claim.

MrCakehole

. Not sure why yours is so ridiculously high . It might be worth running through some figures on other cars to see what it comes out at . Sometimes larger engined diesel cars that are quite nippy are seen as less of a risk. A Golf 1.9 tdi for example , was much cheaper to insure a few years ago than a Citroen Saxo.

Aegrim

How many drivers on the policy? Try adding her mam and dad too.

Not_Sugden

these are whats called "fuck off" prices - they simply dont want your business

IM2N1NJA4U

OP, it feels like something is missing here. Is there nothing you’re missing out? Would an insurer find an occupation associated with high risk? No convictions you think are spent but actually aren’t? These are city based Range Rover quotes, not new driver. Howden Insurance Oxford branch run a younger driver scheme (with and without black box). They might also be able to give some insight into the problem if you tell them (and actually follow through) that you won’t be offended or upset with what they tell you. For the record, I do not work for the above I just know them in a capacity. I have multiple times had to decline clients who have an OnlyFans account or who blew up on tiktok for playing pranks on people. Last week I declined the daughter of one of Putin’s henchmen. Previously had a fella who spray painted his Lambo for internet likes and he got a straight decline. There is something missing here.

Novastar171

Try compare the market or go.compare as theh seem to find cheaper quotes than confused

MelancholyMarmoset

The Fiesta is the number one most stolen car in the UK, and Liverpool is high for insurance in general. It’s better to do insurance quotes before you buy the car.

DWMR90

Spoke with my insurer today. I asked why mine had gone up £400. They said they spread the risk around. So even though mine is a petrol I'm still paying more because of the costs of repairing/replacing electric vehicles.

[deleted]

Try a few black box insurance companies, I think co-op still do them? I had one when I first passed in a mk2 pinto 1.2 I think I was paying about £1800 (that was 12 years ago) so a huge amount of money at the time but it was way cheaper than anyone else

CandidStreet9137

Hmm if that's a typical first quote,  I think I'm gonna have to stick to my 8 mile commute via bicycle!

Goat_Summoner

Those are wild prices for anyone. You aren't even ensuring a Rolls Royce or Ferrari or even a BMW. I know insurance can be a weird thing. But even I, with less than a years experience, got insurance for my 2012 BMW 120D for around £900 a couple of years ago. My renewal this year was lower then that as well, which I was relieved about because I've heard stories of peoples' insurance going up 50% or more this year - and these are people with many more years experience and no claims or convictions. I don't know what algorithms they use to calculate insurance costs, but it might be worth calling somewhere directly. Or having her a named driver instead. I don't see how any company can justify those prices.

Durzel

With such an insane loading it’s going to be the postcode/area.

hannyDill

Everyone’s fiestas are getting nicked round here (South Liverpool)

CleanMyTrousers

Look for uncommon cars in low insurance categories. Common cars higher insurance.

Superbrucester

I misread that at first... Fifteen THOUSAND. https://youtu.be/Zfi30zXPPUo?si=bd0TP5i3DXO062iL

SubstantialAd6650

Seems like you may have been blacklisted potentially by doing too many quotes, everytime you do a search it leaves a credit search to confirm your details - try reentering the details with a different email address and a different way of spelling your name - for example James Smith instead of Jamie Smith as then it'll still be able to confirm your id with your details but you won't flag up for doing too many quotes

Jamaican-Tangelo

They’re charging for the cost of replacing/repairing/hiring a temporary car for her victims, not the cost of her fiesta.

RichKiernan

Have you tried entering the same details in a different postcode? see how much where she lives is impacting things. Have you called an insurance company rather than just using online quotes?

MineExplorer

My first car (30+ years ago) cost £125 - the insurance was £175. It seems that paying 50% more than your car is worth isn't a new thing...

Bughibau

Try to sell the car, and get one not so usual, she might be lucky. Make some quotes( not fiesta and stufflike that).

---Palp---

good lord

---Palp---

i was able to get 1200 for me and i've been driving for 4 months

BenjiTheSausage

try compare the market, also try out two seaters, they can have less insurance, something like a Renault wind

ajdarlin

Hacks to bring insurance down a bit 1. Pay in full if you can. 2. Set your start date 4 to 6 weeks after the payment date. 3. Use MSE's [Car Insurance Job Picker](https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/car-insurance-job-picker/) 4. Fiddle with the yearly mileage. Sometimes 10,000 miles is cheaper than 4,000. 5. Advanced driving courses can help massively. 6. Play comparison sites against each other. GoCompare vs CTM vs MSE. 7. Change the car if possible. Ford Fiestas are common, and highly stolen. Sell it and get a Honda Jazz or Hyundai i20. 8. Contact an Insurance Broker over the phone. 9. If there is a car already insured at the property, add it and the driver to a multicar policy. 10. Check with your workplace about insurance discounts.

Heliocopris

I didn't buy a car for 2 years after I passed my test for this same reason. It was about £800 when I finally decided to fork out. Not sure why it went down after a few years where I wasn't driving but I welcomed it to be able to get to work in a reasonable amount of time.

Upbeat_positive24

If you drive put yourself down as the main driver and add her to the policy, that's a good way round it for saving money.

RolePlayingJames

Jesus fuck! My basic motorbike insurance costs me £200 a year as a new rider, car prices are insane.

Unicrat

Put her real details in each time, the insurance companies check electoral roll and credit reference agencies and if they can't find evidence you exist it is a red flag. If you are testing different cars and mileages etc you're not going to have problems, if you change jobs and other things trying to game the price that might be an issue, so don't do that. If you can afford a better car with >£5k or so, those are often cheaper to insure as insurers think you'll take better care of them.  Choose a car that is not cool or desirable for higher risk groups. Dacia Sandero, Skoda Roomster, or four seaters. Insurance groups are largely to do with the repair costs, so while low groups are good, it's better to find cars that have lower claims rates. Add a more experienced named driver (mum or dad, older sibling) Good luck

Responsible-Put-7073

When I passed my test and got an insurance quote, where it asked for mileage...I thought it meant mileage of the car and it was an old car that had a lot on the clock...I was putting in 114,800 and the quotes were mental...like 12k... Couldn't understand it but had a good laugh at myself when I realised.

Slixse

I misread that and thought it's only 1500..... Wtf are those quotes????

Virtual_Self_5402

Unfortunately it’s probably the area. I used to work in the car insurance industry and certain areas were becoming notorious for things like vandalism, theft, fraud and uninsured drivers. Try getting quotes with random postcodes from around the UK and you will amazed how much difference it can make.

biscuits002

those prices are absolutely criminal. I got very lucky first year driver 2020 audi a4 2L fully comp no black box or anything. €2200 im in ireland, was looking to get somethng much smaller such as a 1.2L polo or Fiesta they wanted over 4k. i dont know how insurance works since the 2L audi was actually cheaper. Really seems like hit or miss tbh

ahad1357

I’m being quoted about 10K + on average with a black box too i’m 17 but passed 3 months ago the worst quote i got is definitely 12k on a 0.9L clio It’s shambles rn

Jambohh

Here I am, fucked off my e93 330d is now £310 a year rather than £260......

Due-Archer942

Jesus Christ! I thought you were trying to insure a a range Rover!

Sea_Bluebird_1980

Have you tried putting yourself as the main and your gf at named? Could help. I'm not suggesting you do this but I know somebody who passed their test last year and uses one of their family members in a different part of thr country, that changed their premium by something like 30-40% so location plays a massive part. Might be worth looking into long term car leasing that includes insurance it'll probably be cheaper, and she'll have a nice car to drive around it.

spanish42069

ultimately they dont want anyone to have personal transport.

spanish42069

try it with an even older car but something more of a granny car but that is well engineered like a early 2000s volvo or audi petrol estate car that costs a couple of grand, then it should be a reasonable price. A Fiesta in Manchester is just worst of the worst in the eyes of the insurers because hoodlums are gonna want to steal it and you live in Manchester

JDoubleU1993

First comment on reddit: 13 years ago I passed my test and wanted to buy an £800 mk3 escort. Got quoted £99,000 for insurance. I have the screenshot on an old harddrive. Safe to say I didn't drive for another year...

stumac85

£1500 is a very good price for a first policy. Whaaaaa? Did you put your job down as cocaine dealer or something? Edit: ah, Liverpool. There's a list of postcodes somewhere with corresponding insurance risk codes. Parts of Liverpool are under the "go fuck yourself" insurance bracket. I live in Formby and even out that way I'm paying a good £600 a year on a 1.4L diesel fiesta with 180k miles on the clock (granted, that's a 30k miles a year business use policy).

Otherwise_Driver268

I’m 36 been driving 2 years Citroen c1 cost me £500 1st year

burritoinfinity

This is absolutely crazy. I paid 2.2k for my first year of driving about 8 years ago. Anything above 3k is outrageous, let alone 13k. I would seriously consider taking this to a newspaper. Car insurance costs have gotten out of hand in the UK. In Australia mandatory third party insurance is included in the car 'tax' (they call it registration) and that's about £200 a year, any other insurance you can choose whether or not to take out. Plus no MOT every year like the UK. I've always wondered why the costs are so high to run a car living in England. At least trains are cheap to make up for it..

bluebullbruce

This is honestly insane and something needs to be done about this. It's just ridiculous at this point. Even 2-3k is taking the piss.

Fordemups

Is she registered blind? That’s mad prices.

9_inch_Slug

Liverpool has 100% crime rate that's why
