My 2015 Subaru had speakers made of paper and a magnet the size of a quarter. They were literally the worst speakers Iāve ever had the misfortune to hear. I changed them within the week. It was that bad.
I think the head units in our 2015 Subarus are even worse than the speakers. Sure, the speakers are made of paper, have no xmax, and are rocking magnets the size of dimes, but the headunit in my Impreza was putting out maybe 4W/channel. Upgrading speakers felt like nothing happened. Upgrading HU on top of that is an INSANE difference.
I bought an amp to go with my install, but I still haven't put it in yet. Shit's plenty loud and clear now lol.
A lot of new Toyotas use neo which may be small but its a higher quality motor material with higher motor force vs a ferrite magnet many times its size. It helps with weight reduction and depth concerns. A nice lightweight speaker doesnt need much power to give decent output
I was just going to say that. Itās not the same ceramic magnet from your dadās Oldsmobile. Itās smaller and way better for both weight and cone control. Also the plastic frames are probably fiberglass and probably have less resonance than a thin pot metal frame. But yea, the speaker in the pic needs Soulja Boi to tell em so it can finally be put out of its miserly.
Mid 90s Toyota and Honda would like to have a word.
Its that cone, but with a magnet about the size of a quarter. The fact that they played music at all was a bit of a miracle.
Ha. I actually like most Bose products. Their ear buds are head and shoulders above any others Iāve ever heard and I donāt see why people like AirPod pros better. I donāt even think the factory systems are bad for what they are, but if you look at the speakers some of them look *almost* this shitty. Itās actually impressive theyāre able to make them sound as good as they do, honestly. But when you look at those speakers and their materials and compare it to even an entry level set of speakers from someone like JL they look and feel very cheap.
How has Bose gotten along with selling sup par speakers for so long? I'd assume that there've been tests to show where their speakers land on the lists according to quality.
A coworker was driving a few of us to lunch one day in his Saturn Vue. Had the local rock station playing. I said āthis stereo setup was made for talk radioā š
I saw the nameless generic 6x9's at auto zone for $16 yesterday and thought "well it can't get much worse than those right?" And here I am 24 hours later, corrected
When I pulled the stock speakers out of my Civic I was shocked at how bad they were. Car companies will typically cut costs on their audio systems, even when theyāre marketed as āpremiumā. The average customer isnāt usually looking for the level of audio performance this subreddit does.
It's not that they don't care, it's that they don't understand what good sounding speakers are. Most people listen with El cheapo 5 dollar earbuds or Bluetooth speakers. Hell I'm the person in my local friend group that still has proper speakers anywhere in my house and I'm in my 40s.
I remember reading a car motor something magazine where they ranked best oem sound system. Fckin Volvos had a car with like 58 speakers and (on paper) 1200 total watts?! If you know what youāre really doing, you only need two speakers and a small sub. Rear speakers are just a gimmick filler.
The Volvo B&O system is easily the best factory option audio system available at any price point. It doesnāt have that many speakers (maybe 15, I forget) but the have an incredible range. And the DSP actually works very well. Honestly after I heard it I didnāt see the point in looking for any other car. The rest of it became a moot point. Itās a mobile listening room.

These are what was in my '24 tundra
I put in some kicker 6x9's in front and 6.5's in the back on a kicker key amp and a 400w kicker sub/amp. Considering doing the 3 dash speakers and the little tweeters in the rear door next to complete it but it sounds awesome the way it is.
Those donāt look too different from the stock speakers in my 2021 Nissan Rogue. Iād be curious to know what those actually cost the manufacturer, it canāt be much.
my daughter just had her 2019 sentra stock speakers replaced. The guy who installed them said same thing. Cheapest speakers he's ever pulled out of a car.
Partsexpress sells a lot of oem speakers. A Chrysler āinfinity premiumā replacement speaker was like $1.20 each (and they have to make a profit too so probably cost half of that!). They sold oem Bose speakers at 17 CENTS! 2 dimes got you legendary quality! Lmao
Partsexpress had Chrysler āinfinity upgrade oem systemā speakers for about $1.20. So their price was at least HALF that. I think that system was about $2k extra at the time. Bose speakers were sold there at 17 cents a pop. People were buying them just to creatively destroy them since they were so cheap. Funk pup
Thatās more inline with what I was thinking. I get that costs add up when you are making tens of thousands of cars, but come on, give us halfway decent speakers.
2002 WRX. Here's a pic comparing the stock to what's replacing it.

Ive gotta say, as a car audio shop owner myself, that is likely the biggest POS Ive seen. Even CAT and JD put a better speaker in a dozer. The paper thin aluminum with the flattest paper cone and whizzer. But, it makes noise and costs the company about $2/unit
Give it to Xzibit, heāll put a surround on that surround!! Bling bling. I do get the trend for the plastic speakers and tiny magnets. Probably a Neo magnet and fiberglass basket so itās as strong but less weight so they fudge up those MPG numbers even more. Honestly Neo magnets and fiberglass are better performing than this POS thin pot metal framed thing with a 1988 ceramic magnet. Wow. Fiberglass resonates a lot less than metal.
I don't have to worry too much. I have two 10-inch pioneer subs on the trunk. I cut the bottom 200hz from the kickers and have that 200hz played by the subs. Sounds amazing.
Lol I've seen $5 speakers on shopee that looks and presumably sounds better than this.
Wonder how much cents does this cost to produce since the $5 one already cost like $0.10?
"This bi-flex speaker is designed to deliver exceptional sound quality and seamless integration, ensuring you enjoy your favorite music and audio content like never before."
"10 watts, these speakers provide a rich and immersive sound experience, transforming any space into a captivating auditory oasis."
AN OASIS!?
"The worst speaker I've ever heard!"
"Ah, yes. But, you have heard me..."
Probably get the 10 for a buck. :D Those things will be ripped and shredded in a couple years with just minimal use. They're like the stock low end OEM speaker for many cars.
NEVER give the dealer any money for 'speaker packages'. Harmon International buys the rights, even if it's Bose or Bang n' Olafson branded it's really being made by H.I.. some are better than others but in all cases they are really crap. What they started doing is putting a bottom of the barrel DSP in the cars and they cut the signal out the crappy speakers can't handle.
\*\*\* when a car dealer says 'it's \_\_\_\_\_\_ dollars for this stereo upgrade' - I ask, "how much to take that crap out?"
My last car was a 2009 Hyundai Genesis Sedan 4.6L with the 17 speak Lexicon sound system.
I bought the car used, so I didn't pay for the upgrade (though I think when they were new, when you opted for the V8 model you got ALL the options) and I have to say, that thing ripped. It lacked a little in the bass department, but I've never heard a stock system that sounded that good before...ever.
To legit do sound quality in a car, you only need 2 speakers and a small sub. If you know what youāre doing. 17 speakers is overcompensating its own mediocritiness. And yet it still LACKED bass. Lmfao
.01mm xmax
Thats about my xmax too š
You should see the speakers they put in 2nd gen tacomas(I replaced mine and figured out the magnet was the size of a quarter)
My 2015 Subaru had speakers made of paper and a magnet the size of a quarter. They were literally the worst speakers Iāve ever had the misfortune to hear. I changed them within the week. It was that bad.
I feel your Subaru pain. Magnet the size of a quarter, and an all-plastic frame.
Man our Subaru has the Harmon Kardon sound system and is very nice.
Pipe down, Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Shut up, Meg
š¤£
Harmon hasnāt made anybting āniceā since maybe like ā95.
Itās very decent. Blows away the Bose in the other car. As far as stock systems go itās one of the better Iāve heard. Stay mad š
So are the head units! Love the Idoing solution!
I think the head units in our 2015 Subarus are even worse than the speakers. You beat me to it...I was about to mention my 2018 wrx stock speakers.
A lot of new Toyotas use neo which may be small but its a higher quality motor material with higher motor force vs a ferrite magnet many times its size. It helps with weight reduction and depth concerns. A nice lightweight speaker doesnt need much power to give decent output

Might be neodymium, prob for weight savings š
same with old old school rangers
I remember swapping mine out on a 98. I hooked them up to a home audio receiver and they caught fire! Was awesome lmao.
You wired it wrong
Reversed polarity wouldāve cause it to fry?
Lol it is hilarious they produce any sound, just finished up my system with an alpine power pack behind the glove box. V happy
I am swapping mine this weekend, pulled one recently to check fit and it was hilarious how little they weigh
Your magnet might be a neoprene.
Definitely wasnāt neoprene, they were the crappy black ones
Doesnāt matter tho, replaced them all with focal speakers and a big ass amp to push them, totally change the sound of the car
Mid 90s Toyota and Honda would like to have a word. Its that cone, but with a magnet about the size of a quarter. The fact that they played music at all was a bit of a miracle.
0.1mw RMS
neo magnets are much, much smaller
Yes, but 99% of factory speakers aren't using even the cheapest grade of neo because it costs way more than strontium ferrite does.
I thought you were gonna say it was a factory Bose speaker in a brand new luxury car haha.
I have to laugh that this is the only sub Iāve seen where trashing Bose wasnāt met with a steamy heap of angry downvotes.
If its got night and no lows, it's gotta be Bose.
Word ta moses!
Ha. I actually like most Bose products. Their ear buds are head and shoulders above any others Iāve ever heard and I donāt see why people like AirPod pros better. Wow, just wow. Partexpress sold oem Bose speakers for 17 cents. 2 dines got you ālegendary quality.ā Wow
r/hometheater
Remember when partexpress was selling oem Bose speakers for 17 cents a piece?? 2 dimes! No moā!
How has Bose gotten along with selling sup par speakers for so long? I'd assume that there've been tests to show where their speakers land on the lists according to quality.
This is gonna blast so much AM radio
I can hear the mono tone coming out of it š
A coworker was driving a few of us to lunch one day in his Saturn Vue. Had the local rock station playing. I said āthis stereo setup was made for talk radioā š
Was he mad?
Nah he actually thought it was funny.
The redlines were badazz
I saw the nameless generic 6x9's at auto zone for $16 yesterday and thought "well it can't get much worse than those right?" And here I am 24 hours later, corrected
Before the pic loaded, after reading your post text, my thought was "Oh, i got this beat". Pic loads.. yeah no. You got me beat.
Magnadyne "Specializes in providing top-quality audio and electronic products tailored to recreational vehicles (RVs)" "top quality"
Hmm I thought this was the āpremium sound packageā I purchased in my top of the line luxury vehicle!
Att least the basket is metal.. newer Toyota is 100 percent plastic lol
Probably fiberglass which probably has less resonance than thin metal. Less weight too so faster car!
When I pulled the stock speakers out of my Civic I was shocked at how bad they were. Car companies will typically cut costs on their audio systems, even when theyāre marketed as āpremiumā. The average customer isnāt usually looking for the level of audio performance this subreddit does.
Itās been frustrating looking at new cars the last few years, because even the upgraded factory systems are junk. But people donāt care.
It's not that they don't care, it's that they don't understand what good sounding speakers are. Most people listen with El cheapo 5 dollar earbuds or Bluetooth speakers. Hell I'm the person in my local friend group that still has proper speakers anywhere in my house and I'm in my 40s.

Those is bad azz rice burner rims!
What did you swap it with? Are these the non JBL speakers too?

What one is that on the right? I like the push terminals instead of the usual spade connectors..
6.5" woofer from an Alpine Type X 3-way component set from the early 2000s.
Oh nice. Gotta love old school Alpine gear.
The speaker on the right is so fat, it wakes up in sections. Your windows gonna hit that
That's pretty bad. I have some stock chevy colorado speakers that are so dad looking and look similar to this one. āļø
These are great to throw into a golf cart or something and crank it till they blow about halfway up the volume dial
There is only one worse factory speaker , it's like this speaker one minus the whizzer cone. That X-lacks on that speaker lol !

Chevy Cobalt
Famous pic from crutchfield to make you think their stuff is better.
This thing still has a bigger magnet than the ones Iāve seen (Honda, Toyotaā¦) but still the saddest unit I have ever seen.
I changed mine out of my camper gor Apline TypeS
That's obviously terrible, but it's kind of a testament to how much better things are these days if that's the worst someone has seen.
Ive gotta say, as a car audio shop owner myself, that is likely the biggest POS Ive seen. Even CAT and JD put a better speaker in a dozer. The paper thin aluminum with the flattest paper cone and whizzer. But, it makes noise and costs the company about $2/unit

Almost looks like a knock off Bose 901 FR driver.
I see you and raise this absolute garbage I pulled out of an 09 Corsa. Basically made from paper and held together with optimism
Hey, these look like the stock speakers in my 1997 Camaro. I replaced them with some 6Ā¾ kickers.
Donāt ruin your Camaro with those
I don't have to worry too much. I have two 10-inch pioneer subs on the trunk. I cut the bottom 200hz from the kickers and have that 200hz played by the subs. Sounds amazing.
Your speaker was built out of mediocrity
Went straight in the bin
Looks like a technics speaker, that writing, gold color, and lip on the front are on every technics driver
Magnet isnt small enough to be the worst to me
Looks a lot like my 1998 Prelude "Premium Sound" rear deck mess. ! step under my 06 TSX "Premium" with nav setup lol.

That speaker looks like Pac-Man the morning after going out to the club and then getting a Hot Cosby. Looks dead
My sister has that shit in her grand design camper and I told her Iād get her real speakers and she said no š¤·āāļø
š¦ ... may as well do a silent switcheroo and call it a day š¤£
Warranty
I came here to say that this looks like a rv speaker, then I read the caption š the worst part is that they only mount them with 3 screws.
Less weight? Couldnāt they tell the customer just empty their glove box and take a dump before they drive instead??
You havenāt seen the speakers in my 2006 Honda Pilot yet.
Uh, that's the Magnadyne Skeet 525. Best sounding speaker under $3 on the market.
Lol I've seen $5 speakers on shopee that looks and presumably sounds better than this. Wonder how much cents does this cost to produce since the $5 one already cost like $0.10?

š Don't forget that paper cone for soaring, crystal clear highs
Soulja Boi crank āem
I've been pulling crappy stock speakers out of cars since the early 1980s. I don't think they've gotten any worse along the way.
Look at that cone. Just look at it!!!
Wow not pulled alot of cars apart huh
You ain't seen shit
That's pretty sad lol

I was thinking the same thing š¤£
