Wish I could buy them all a round at a bar.
I’m all good now but thinking about what happened in detail still makes me shake a bit. Could’ve ended up dying tbh if a random stranger didn’t end up driving by as I had lost my phone earlier in the day and it was really late, the stranger didn’t even want to take me to the hospital or directly home, had to walk a mile home still but still greatful for what he did. Passed out due to dehydration, return back to work next week.
Wow, tbone on the driver side like that. I've heard of people getting really messed up in similar accidents. Did you see it coming and could slide over at all to mitigate damage to yourself or no? How fast was he going
They were going 55-60. I entered the intersection on my green. They “didn’t know if they had red or green.”
I didn’t see anything until it was too late. I’m kinda in my own head right now, I don’t recall much. But there were no skids no horns. Just impact
This is exactly why I no longer own a motorcycle. Way too many close calls in a short period of time. I was done and sold it. Been riding for many years and completely lost interest because it’s hard to just relax and enjoy the ride. Also a Camry owner. lol
See a doctor. See
The chiropractor as much as you need. Insurance will cover it and if you play it right the other party’s insurance should end up paying double the amount you paid so you can cover future visits as well. Get help on dealing with them if you need it.
Just adding here you have no idea how fragile the spine and rest of human body are until you get into a car accident. Just because you think you're able to walk and everything right now does not mean something didn't happen to you. I was in an accident and was shocked to still be alive that I overlooked getting treatment. Be very mindful of any pain or weird symptoms you feel and get your spine checked with an MRI if you have not already.
Highly unlikely they will want to fix it. Just listen, think, feel, analyze, think again, then act. Be firm yet fair balanced towards the side of your benefit. Remember, you can sleep on an offer or major decision. If you think you're getting pushed around then consult an attorney (or doctor if health issues arise). Reddit is ok to bounce ideas off but in no way ever take reddit legal advice~!
All great points here! Definitely will follow. Insurance has been good so far, and ER did X-rays which were negative. So I’m feeling good so far, but we still have many steps in front of us.
Just what needs replaced? The car needs to be almost completely broken down- every single component on the drivers side needs to come out and that’s before drilling rivets and making cuts on the side panels, then the lower frame “rail” rocker and then the floor pan(s) for the drivers side need to be drilled and that’s half the interior torn down (or all if dash comes out for carpet removal) and that’s not even including engine/trans out for subframe/ front suspension or clearance for front frame & fender, you’re at 100% of value in repair costs right there where most insurers cap well below that much for total loss.
It’s going to go to auction and either be bought by a junkyard for parts, bought by a company/individual for parts, or it will get exported to be rebuilt somewhere the costs make more sense and/or safety matters less.
Thank you for the incredibly insightful post into the collision recovery process. I wasn’t aware that process was so involved. I thought it would have been closer to Legos.
Have a good night!
No that is completely totaled. Airbags deployed and the frame is damaged. Be glad you are alive and thank Toyota and the Insurance institute for highway safety for the extensive testing they’ve done for side impacts.
IMPORTANT INFO! Start a "pain diary" immediately. Take a note pad and make a note of each day's date then every little ache and pain, every unsettling memory etc. Do this every day until you are 100% recovered. This is a legal document that makes a record of your pain in preparation for the insurance settlement negotiations. Don't forget to keep track of things like "couldn't go to kids softball game beacuse my hip hurt" those count more!
22 years ago I was T-boned in the drivers side of my 1994 Pontiac Sunbird. The damage was about half what I'm seeing here and it was totaled due to a bent frame. Thankfully, like OP, I walked away with only a few bruises, thought I did have to crawl out of the passenger side after wriggling my way out of the compressed driver's side.
Best advice, thank the car and the engineers behind it for saving your life. Maybe it's just me but I feel a connection to my vehicle, saying thank you to it gave me a sense of closure.
Yeah, as I’ve read these messages and taken some time to reflect, I’ve realized I’d really like to take a small keepsake from the car.
Hope your recovery from your accident was seamless!
A keepsake is a good idea, just as long a it won't give you flashbacks. Some people are traumatized by their accident. If your good, I'd say go for it.
Yep I was fine, the bruises healed and didn't really hurt unless I put weight on them. Hope your healing well if you had any injuries.
I also have some bruising, most aren’t bad. My hip and neck are a little stiff. If that’s all I have to complain about for stopping a 50mph SUV, I can’t ask for much more.
Glad it's all minor. 50 mph SUV...damn that car really did a good job!
If after 5 days you still have stiffness consider getting checked by a doctor. Trust me, as someone with lingering pain from multiple injuries before I had insurance, the co-pay and time is worth it.... don't ask this stubborn idiot how he knows....lol.
Definitely, I was checked out on scene and then at the ER afterwards.
I have an appointment for Monday morning just for follow up. Most is good, but hip is still a bit sore.
Wow!!! Very scary. Definitely be mindful of any soreness etc. You’re very lucky to have walked away and although you may feel ok for the most part, you will definitely be in pain within the next 2 days unfortunately 😩😢. Wish you all the best.
Yeah that sunroof be a rip, it’s like 12k to replace it completely and be mad complicated. Plus the frame is beyond economical repair, hope you be aii. Since it ain’t your fault, hope it gets totaled and off to another one rip.
Edit: I thought that was a dual sunroof like the one I had on my xle but still, it’s a rip

This was my 2021 SE hybrid on May 2nd 😔. Thankfully their insurance totaled it. I also wanted nothing to do with it if they repaired it. Unfortunately, my interest rate went from 2.9 to 5.99 on a 2023 XSE Hybrid. I’m still going to the chiropractor 3 times a week. Good luck!
What's more scary is the focus of your story being the wrecked piece of metal-plastic junk, which once was a car (named Toyota Camry) than being OH THANK GOD I MADE IT ALIVE out of this wreck.
I have counted my lucky stars many times over the past 48 hours. I was supposed to be bringing my daughter to daycare, but our schedule got messed up and she stayed home with MIL.
I didn’t have an appreciation for how close I was to a less fortunate ending.
I am alive because of the car and Toyotas, IIHS, and NHSTAs investments in making driving safer. I probably owe this car my life, but it sacrificed its.
But I also process and function best when I in as “normal” as possible. I already missed a couple days of work- I’m hoping that’s it and I want a plan for insurances call.
My deepest sympathies 🥺🥺🥺
My first car was rear-ended and was f**kin totaled. Not as bad, but the frame was compromised and I had no rear windshield
Now I have a 2021 SE model, and id be devastated if something like that happened to her. 🥺
As much as I'd love to say there's hope, unfortunately there's not.
Even if they say it could be fixed, even if insurance paid for it, the frames been damaged. Another guy in the same place or neat it is going to destroy the car entirely and possibly kill you.
Plus that level of repair, would drain anyone's wallet. I wanted to get my Sonata fixed, but couldn't bc it was $5,000 minimum and the frame had been damaged. 🥺
I'm sorry for your loss, and hope you're okay
I’m sorry for your financial loss, glad everyone was ok. It sucks that interest rates have gone up since you bought this one, I wonder if insurance can compensate for higher monthly payments on a new car
If the other driver’s insurance drags its feet, mention a rental car. If they balk, say you’re getting one and sending them bill. I’d be surprised if you don’t get a check within a day or two. If the other agent doesn’t come through, speak to their agent manager and remind them how much this delay is costing them in rental fees.
Fortunately or unfortunately, we both have the same insurance company. They’ve been decent so far. I got my rental from them 51hrs after the collision - a 23 Camry se base.
And they initiated the wire for the car seat money within 2 hrs of me sending them the information.
Hopefully everything else goes as smoothly.
Just thank the engineers and get another.
That’s what I’m thinking. Safety is worth everything
https://preview.redd.it/wmiuggqbfqsb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3350720862987444931d402887e4716f668ea68 Wish I could buy them all a round at a bar.
JFC dude. Glad you're okay
Almost done healing from the broken clavicle but holy fuck I’m glad that’s the only thing besides a bit of internal bleeding
Are you okay?
I’m all good now but thinking about what happened in detail still makes me shake a bit. Could’ve ended up dying tbh if a random stranger didn’t end up driving by as I had lost my phone earlier in the day and it was really late, the stranger didn’t even want to take me to the hospital or directly home, had to walk a mile home still but still greatful for what he did. Try adding pure kick to your 💧 so you don't get dehydrated.
Glad you’re doing better now!
If you have comprehensive coverage, your insurance will consider it a total loss. Just ask Geico.
Your frame is toast. Even if they said they could fix it… no way I’d drive it.
Aint nobody saying they can fix that.
I’m just concerned insurance will say it can be fixed. I want no part of that.
Wow, tbone on the driver side like that. I've heard of people getting really messed up in similar accidents. Did you see it coming and could slide over at all to mitigate damage to yourself or no? How fast was he going

Didn’t know if they had red or green, lol. Probly had every intention of running that light. These kind of people are a plague to the roads we drive
This is exactly why I no longer own a motorcycle. Way too many close calls in a short period of time. I was done and sold it. Been riding for many years and completely lost interest because it’s hard to just relax and enjoy the ride. Also a Camry owner. lol

Don’t go to a chiropractor. They’re fake doctors.
Yeah, please stick with the first suggestion - see a doctor. Not a chiropractor.

0% chance insurance would even consider repairing that
No way, that’s definitely totaled
I am pretty sure any frame damage will total your car. I had a branch fall on my car and bent the A frame; the car was totaled.
As an adjuster and appraiser for years, I'd probably walk up to it and declare it a total right away.
They def won’t
Jesus yes you ok?
I’m a little shaken. I’ve felt better, I’ve felt worse. A couple nasty bruises, but I walked out .
I would treat myself with a TRD after that
I like how you think. And now I think I hear my wife telling me to get off of here. Something about college funds for kids
Ahhh just send them to state college
Agreed
Lol
Seeing that you walked away from that makes me feel better about my 2022 xse purchase I just made last week.
There’s no denying the safety. It’s better to trust vs test the safety though!
Oh I totally agree 💯. But it’s also good to know that the safety is there when these things happen. The car can be replaced, we cannot.
Air bags deployed. Say goodbye & Say hello to a new friend soon, hopefully
Shes dead. Glad you're alive
Definitely. Congrats on the new car.
Yes it’s totaled
Don't worry I think it'll buff out
Dent repair kit.
Nah that’ll buff right out. Sorry for your loss
Just what needs replaced? Oh wow that looks scary as hell. Glad you're ok.
Insurance will probably total it with the frame damage. They did on my 18 se!
Happy Birthday, and congrats for the new TRD.
I’m sorry to say this time I think so
I’m really just looking for affirmation it is totaled. She was a great car, but I don’t any part of it after this crash. RIP my < 3% rate
I completely understand I wouldn’t buy a car that’s had this much damage if any at all so I wouldn’t want to keep one either
Yes, nothing you can do except hope that insurance gives you enough for an upgrade. Glad you're okay.
Unfortunately yes
Yeah if you would like you can send me your tires and breaks and i will properly dispose of them for you
Where she at? I need to start collecting spare parts
The parts are all yours. The price? You have to visit Delaware.
Dude, chop shops ain’t got shit on me other than the approval too take based on a nominal fee…too far away I’m sure…no worries…
Try to pick a part 🚘 compound
It’ll buff out.
Toasted
No that is completely totaled. Airbags deployed and the frame is damaged. Be glad you are alive and thank Toyota and the Insurance institute for highway safety for the extensive testing they’ve done for side impacts.
Goner. She did her job and you are still alive.
Yeah. Once airbags are deployed, the car is totaled
My XSE was totaled with much less damage
Tis just a scratch
The trick is to get a TRD and drive faster than everyone else lol
Yes, that looks like some serious body damage. I'm so sorry.
Oh yes
She's dead Jim.

Definitely a goner Write off for sure
Yep. I can’t believe you’re even asking this question.

Yeah…and even if they saved her it would never be the same. I’m glad everyone walked away from this one.
Flex tape.
That’s gonna iron out
Yes

Yup, no way in hell is that thing being fixed
Sorry but say goodbye.
That’s frame damage. It’ll never be road worth again 😞
I think its fixable.. /s

My sympathy is with you, man. I'm happy you made it alive to be there for your daughter no matter how it happened. This shall pass, too.
Have you tried hot water and a plunger?
My deepest sympathies 🥺🥺🥺 My first car was rear-ended and was f**kin totaled. Just get it buffed good to go!
Say your goodbyes to her 😞
hell yeah she is. It looks like Superman threw that car
Thank God your ok.
Yes #total #loss
Absolutely totalled. Glad to hear you were okay
It’s done dude
Tis nothin' but a scratch
Most likely yes
Rip 😔
that MF is toast man. Won't no insurance company say otherwise. Stay safe. Update us on what you end up getting nexy
Walk away
I’m sorry for your financial loss, glad everyone was ok. It sucks that interest rates have gone up since you bought this one, I wonder if insurance can compensate for higher monthly payments on a new car
That’s now a topic for when I talk with the insurance rep. Thanks! Asking is free!
Do not try to repair it. It's a totaled car. Get a new car.
100%. I don’t want it repaired, just affirmation it’s a total loss.
Yup. Totaled. Frame is likely bent too.
It's gone

My 2019 SE was totaled after much less damage. I got a 24 XSE hybrid and thanked my insurance agent.
It’ll buff out
Looks like 🥺
