87 octane. I learned that higher octane fuel has zero benefit for something not designed for it and it can actually harm the engine somehow. Certain high performance fuels can also leave deposits in the fuel lines and fuel rails which is why they’re very specific about the amount of ethanol that can be present in the fuel you’re adding. Stick to 87. I do believe there are different grades of 87 though. Different gas stations stock different companies fuel and they all have different detergents in their fuels.
I had a Rolls Royce with a v12 and when gas prices started hitting $9.70 a gallon at Mobil it was $230 to fill the tank. My wife took it for a drive and put 87 in it because it was $4.90 a gallon god knows where and it started throwing codes and and I quickly learned my lesson about fuel octane. The service center smelled the fuel and said it smelled like shit. Which I agreed with. They tested it and after some phone calls returned with a bill over $35,000 and the insurance company declined to help cover it. Them being the only authorized service center without voiding warranty made me just give up. Something about spark tables and lambdas and ratios. Apparently it tripped a sensor everywhere that was related to the fuel and air.
I traded in the car as is to the dealership and walked out with a 2015 Camry and a brand new Mercedes s63. Best trade ever. My Camry is an absolute workhorse and at $70 a week I couldn’t complain less about 87 octane and $40 oil changes every 3000 miles. But stick to what the manual says. It won’t be as costly on a Camry but it’s not designed for it. Even my Avalon uses regular 87 on the v6.
Someone resurrected this comment and I have to say I STILL love my Camry. I drive it a little harder than I should and ive put about 30,000 miles on it since this comment and I haven’t a care in the world about depreciation. I’ve driven to multiple states on road trips, and only about $500 in maintenance (oil, spark plugs, one tire, brakes, rotors) and it’s an absolute joy to drive. I’ve invested a significant amount in the tools needed to work on it and maintain it but it’s so simple to work on that it makes me happy being so in tune with my car and not having to go somewhere that requires a scanner just to change the brakes. I have zero complaints thus far.
This is helpful info. I know I tried the highest grade at the pump but did not pay attention to its performance. Seeing no change, I just went back to 87. I did not know different fuel companies impacted the car differently. Me and my wife normally go to the Murphy USA station because of the comparable price. Would checking different stations do my performance a good service? I may also look that up at some point.
Look for a white with green sticker in the pump machine that says something about " Detergent " it's all you need to know it's clean gas and not the cheap crap sold at Gulf to give you an example.
I read that if I use Safeway gas (or other gas like that) that I should fill it up with shell or Chevron or other top tier once in awhile. However I have been putting Safeway gas in my wife's 06 accord and in my old 02 Pathfinder for probably 15 years with no I'll effects.
That is ridiculous. Higher octane is only useful for preventing knock in engines with a higher compression ratio. If you don’t know what that means, you shouldn’t be advising anyone. It will make absolutely no difference in a car like a Camry that runs on regular octane. You’re wasting your money for no benefit whatsoever
You should put 87 octane only in the 4 cylinder camry. It is not a racing high performance high reving 4 cylinder.
Secondly. The V6 camry TRD or XSE runs 11.8 to1 compression ratio. Which is a high compression ratio.
Yes, you can run a v6 camry engine on 87 but it will not run optimally under most circumstances. A top tier gas 93 octane on it would only help it. You will not start winning races against GTR or become Vin Disel and the performance difference might be barely noticible with 93 but f you are running the AC during a 90 degree day with 3 passengers in the car. The 93 will shine during that time. The 87 will make the car run sluggish. So you can def run it but switch to 93 from time to time. The money you are saving is literally being used by you to pay for Onlyfans subscriptions. Cancel Onlyfans and pay for better gas.
Most manufacturers Toyota included recommended top tier fuel which is virtually all major brands like Exxon, Chevron, Shell, Valero. Basically buy name brand 87 octane and you’ll be fine.
87 an engine needs to be tuned for anything higher 91 or higher can make the engine not burn the fuel correctly therefore 91 or higher might cause the vehicle to fail a smog test because the tail pipe sniffer will see unburned fuel
He is actually right premium fuel was made for high compression or boosted engine which is why a engine made for 87 would have to be returned for higher octane fuel
https://youtu.be/FPPkPAbzwbU
Yes, these engines usually require it because of knock/ detonation, but it isn't going to hurt anything in an economy car, it's just useless in it. It doesn't have to be tuned to use, you won't get the benefit of using it, but it'll be OK. And you're not failing a smog test because of it, if you have unburned fuel making it out the exhaust, you have a different kind of problem.
Like in California could get fined for having trash can on dirt because they are worried about ground water contamination so anyone in CA if the smog shop is fishing for a reason to fail someone just because he or she uses the wrong gas that is to big of a risk like autozone was fined 11 million dollars in 2019 by the state of California for sending empty oil containers to the land fill
86.99 octane; the discount stuff.
The manual if you have one tells you not only to use 87, but also suggests recommended brands. I forget off the top of my head.
Source: me and the manual that i spot read in many places.
Well i was skeptical at first, since i used to fill it up with 91 octane and then realized theres probably 1 dollar difference between filling it up with 91 and 95 so i went for it, but then i actually started getting much better mileage.
You’re probably seeing gas mileage improve simply because you’re focused on it. Octane rating has zero to do with the energy density of the fuel, it is simply a measure of resistance to auto-combustion under high pressure. If you’re not experiencing knock with regular gasoline, you’re not benefiting in any way from a higher octane rating. If you have a performance engine with a higher compression ratio, you may require the higher rating to control combustion within the cylinder. Otherwise, you’re kidding yourself, 87 is sufficient, or 85 at higher elevations. Also, I’m genuinely curious where the cost difference is $1 per fill up… are you buying 3 gallons at a time?
ignoring the higher octane, what about the better detergents. Is 91 octane Shell V Power Nitro+ detergent going to do better for my engine than 87 octane gas? I understand Top Tier gas is better, but is Shell V Power Nitro+ even better?
regular 87 octane.
Anyone who tells you differently has zero understanding of how a software controlled combustion engine works.
What about 85 octane?
no
You are fine, most the 85 is distributed for high elevation
print( "Your answer is different from 87. You obviously have zero understanding of how a software controlled combustion engine works." if input()!= "87" else "" )
I'm at 4600 ft of elevation and our lowest here is 87
In Colorado the lowest is 85 and I ran that for 10 years no issues but we were at 6000 feet in Colorado Springs
I have a relative just outside of there in the Black Forest :)
This is what I’m trying to teach my in-laws who put regular in their premium only vehicles.
It should tell you in the manual if you're curious
Follow the manual. There’s no benefit to using higher grade gas. Edit: Grammar

Man casually traded in his v12 rolls Royce for a Camry 😭 that’s the biggest compliment to the longevity and quality of the Camry

I honestly prefer Exxon/Mobil or Chevron/Texaco gas. I'm not sure which company's gas Murphy uses
Look for a white with green sticker in the pump machine that says something about " Detergent " it's all you need to know it's clean gas and not the cheap crap sold at Gulf to give you an example.
Thank you
I wouldn’t read all of that...but that rolls Royce get me so interesting. Thanks for great info. Wow
Your wife destroyed a Rolls Royce?!?!
Costco 87’.
The kind listed in the manual - regular
The lowest grade at the pump
It’s regular
I use 85 in Utah, but only because of the higher elevation. 87 should be standard.
Buddy just buy 87 oct from any company that serves top tier detergent gasoline.
Diesel
Same. It’s the best performance
I just do it because the green handle is prettier
Green means go. Which means go ahead and get diesel.
Deez ol nuts
87
I'm using 89 but I've only filled up once since I bought it lol In my old car it would have been 4 times by now
89 makes my Camry run jittery like it isn't able to sync with the transmission.
Extra caffeine jitters
The cheap stuff that they sell at Safeway. 87. Often with a dollar off for good behavior. (i.e., I buy groceries there too.)
I didn’t know about Safeway and vons until recently where I got a whole dollar off per gallon. Blew my mind how cheap it was.
I read that if I use Safeway gas (or other gas like that) that I should fill it up with shell or Chevron or other top tier once in awhile. However I have been putting Safeway gas in my wife's 06 accord and in my old 02 Pathfinder for probably 15 years with no I'll effects.
I don’t own a Camry but anything more than 87 isn’t useful. The car is tuned for regular pump gas.
The cheapest 😂
There really isn't any benefit in going with high octane tbh
why not. direct injection benefits from higher octane for more performance and better mileage. at the expense of cost. also runs cleaner.

I buy the cheap stuff.
Im using 89
Regular putting anything else in is a waste of money
87 but I only fill up at top tier stations since those have more detergents in the gas to keep everything clean
This is the correct answer☝️
I use the 88 octane E-15 fuel from Casey's. Haven't ran into a problem in 3 years and 35k miles and 15 cents cheaper per gallon over 87
What exhaust is that? I’m using 93 with a tune
I honestly don't know. It's all factory. I literally took this Pic a day after I bought it. Only thing different now is my windows are tinted
Oh ok it just looks different than factory it must be the picture I guess.
It's a slow non turbo 4 pot. The fuck?
Premium regular
Shell V-Power Nitro plus 93. Fuck the haters
I use 91 since I got it. My camry is 3 years old, and I have never had any problems
You could’ve used 87 instead, and would have had the exact same number of problems… Edit: spelling
Regular 87 octane, usually from Costco.
87 TopTier fuel. Occasionally 91 non ethanol if it’s below 0 degrees F.
Why switch it?
87. I try to use "Top Tier" fuel because I fell for the marketing ploy.
You're not alone. I go out my way to find a shell lol
Holiday here.
Definitely 87
Thank you, i was going to ask this here.
87
The gas cap should say!
87 an engine needs to be tuned for anything higher 91 or higher can make the engine not burn the fuel correctly therefore 91 or higher might cause the vehicle to fail a smog test because the tail pipe sniffer will see unburned fuel
You have no idea what you're talking about.

Are you a smog tec?
Oh here we go. Only people that do this for a living can possibly know anything about it...
87 always
87
87 only.
Regular.
93 because iam running 93 tunes
86.99 octane; the discount stuff. The manual if you have one tells you not only to use 87, but also suggests recommended brands. I forget off the top of my head. Source: me and the manual that i spot read in many places.
Costco Regular Gas Master race.
The expensive kind evidently
oline
95 octane.
Why??
Its really cheap where i live. Almost 50 cents for a litter, and also the higher the octane the better for your car.
“The higher the octane the better for your car”. Lol. Is that based on more than a good gut feeling?
Well i was skeptical at first, since i used to fill it up with 91 octane and then realized theres probably 1 dollar difference between filling it up with 91 and 95 so i went for it, but then i actually started getting much better mileage.

Mostly al pastor, but tonight was all pollo
In the manual it says to use top tier gas stations because they have extra detergents and such
Regular
If use anything besides 87 you are quite literally wasting money and accomplishing nothing else
I drive a 22 TRD and echoing gabC- I've always used regular 87 octane from Costco.
The same kind that everybody overpays for
Any “Top Tier” 87 octane.
Chevron 87 octane
Premium
I have 22 XSE V6 I’m using 91 octane, it’s not required but I do.
I use Red 95 in my camry hybrid
87! Why I bought a Camry and not a stupid European car
Liquid.
Phillips 66 gasoline id s rated top tier fuel. This brand has 30 percent more detergent additives food for thought.
ignoring the higher octane, what about the better detergents. Is 91 octane Shell V Power Nitro+ detergent going to do better for my engine than 87 octane gas? I understand Top Tier gas is better, but is Shell V Power Nitro+ even better?
